Abstract:The journal Nucleosides, Nucleotides & Nucleic Acids initiated publication in 1982, and I have had the privilege of being the Executive Editor since that time, and we are now in volume 43 for 2024. Last year I decided that it was time (well past time, I think) to retire and that someone younger and with new ideas and enthusiasm should take over. I suggested to Taylor & Francis that they consider our Associate Editor for Europe, Dr. Suzanne Peyrottes of the University of Montpellier. After appropriate consideration they have appointed Dr. Peyrottes as the Executive Editor, and I am sure that she will do an outstanding job.

Abstract:The article presents the unique and highly interdisciplinary initiative "TUM Senior Excellence Faculty (SEF)" of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). At TUM, selected outstanding professors are awarded the honorary title "TUM Emeritus of Excellence (EoE)" on retirement. The EoE sustain their commitment to their alma mater and support essential tasks of the university. Here, we provide deeper insight into the idea of the SEF and its responsibility to society and outline the mission, concept, organization, and activities of individual EoE. We offer a glimpse at their work by example of their interdisciplinary group initiative TUM Forum Sustainability. Finally, we argue that this strategic project should serve as a model for other universities.

Abstract:Georg Bretthauer war von 1997 bis 2015 Ordinarius für Angewandte Informatik/Automatisierungstechnik an der Universität Karlsruhe und Leiter des Institutes für Angewandte Informatik/Automatisierungstechnik (AIA) in der Fakultät für Maschinenbau der Universität Karlsruhe sowie Leiter des Institutes für Angewandte Informatik im Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (IAI) (heute KIT). Von 2002 bis 2018 war er der Herausgeber der Fachzeitschrift "Automatisierungstechnik - at". Seine wissenschaftlichen Interessen gelten der Modellbildung und Identifikation, der Automatisierungs-technik, der Mechatronik und der Künstlichen Intelligenz. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georg Frey wurde 2009 auf den Lehrstuhl für Prozessautomatisierung an der Universität des Saarlandes (Nachfolge von Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Hartmut Janocha) berufen, der zwischenzeitlich in Lehrstuhl für Automatisierungs- und Energiesysteme umgewidmet wurde. Zudem leitet er den Forschungsbereich Industrial Security am Zentrum für Mechatronik und Automatisierungstechnik (ZeMA) in Saarbrücken. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind modellbasierte Entwurfsverfahren für Automatisierungs- und Energiesysteme, Steuerungstechnik, Simulation, Safety und Security. Seit Mitte 2023 ist er zudem Chefredakteur Science der Zeitschrift atp - Magazin. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Seelecke ist seit 2011 Inhaber des Lehrstuhles für Unkonventionelle Aktorik an der Universität des Saarlandes. Der Lehrstuhl wurde 2015 in Lehrstuhl für Intelligente Materialsysteme (iMSL) umbenannt und gehört heute zu den Fachrichtungen Systems Engineering sowie Materialwissenschaften und Werkstofftechnik. Aufbauend auf zahlreichen DFG-geförderten Grundlagenforschungsprojekten steht die anwendungsorientierte Entwicklung neuer Technologien mit intelligenten Materialien, speziell elektroaktiven Polymeren und Formgedächtnislegierungen, im Fokus der Arbeitsgruppe. Diese Entwicklung beinhaltet neben Systemlösungen aus den Bereichen Sensorik und Aktorik vor allem auch Ansätze im Forschungsgebiet Elastokalorik, einer innovativen und nachhaltigen Heiz- und Kühltechnologie auf Basis von Formgedächtnislegierungen und Polymeren. © 2023 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston

Abstract:mit dieser Ausgabe scheidet Professor Dr. med. Christian P. Speer, FRCPE, eine der tragenden Säulen der ZGN, aus dem Editorial Board dieses traditionsreichsten deutschen Journals zur Geburtshilfe und Neonatologie aus. Ohne Professor Speer, der die Zeitschrift über beeindruckende 29 Jahre entscheidend mitgeprägt hat, wird dem Herausgebergremium ein gewissenhafter Verantwortungsträger, weitsichtiger Vordenker und meinungsstarker Diskutant fehlen. Nicht zuletzt der Blick auf die lange Liste an Verdiensten um die Zeitschrift lässt die Bedeutung des von ihm selbstgewählten Endes seiner aktiven Editorenschaft ermessen. Perinatologische Interdisziplinarität klinisch zu leben und dieses Credo in einem modernen Zeitschriftenformat zu institutionalisieren , umreisst seinen wirkmächtigen Beitrag zur erfolgreichen Fortentwicklung der Zeitschrift für Geburtshilfe und Neonatologie (siehe dazu auch die Laudatio auf Seite 125). Abstract:"Why?" is the question that initiates science. "Why?" is also the answer that maintains science. This interrogative adverb fuels the scientific career of Robert Schlögl. Robert is a dedicated solid-state chemist who has found his specialization in untangling the working principles of heterogeneous catalysts under realistic conditions. As such he combines the full complexity of real catalysts with tailor-made operando experiments to overcome pressure, material, and complexity gaps. His ability to quickly abstract the meaning of spectroscopic and microscopic data, his talent to ask the right question paired with curiosity, diligence, and creativity have made him a world-leading expert in heterogeneous catalysis and energy science. His scientific passion is focused on untangling chemical dynamics as well as working principles and understanding the important interplay of geometric and electronic structures in functional materials. Thereby his research interests involve ammonia and methanol synthesis, carbon materials in catalysis, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation, selective oxidation, and the development of operando setups for microscopy and spectroscopy. He also has a strong commitment to society in scientifically accelerating the energy transition ("Energiewende") in Europe, where he focuses on CO2 utilization and hydrogen as an energy carrier. This is manifested in three recent large Germany-wide projects: Carbon2Chem, CatLab, and TransHyDe.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Electrochemistry is considered to be a major driver for future green energy sources and feedstocks. In the cover story, high throughput experimentation, a well‐established and powerful tool in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, has been extended to the field of electrochemistry. A parallel and modular high throughput screening platform was designed by hte GmbH in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems (IMM) and IEK‐9 / FZ Jülich GmbH. Initial results for hydrogen production by alkaline water electrolysis demonstrate the fitness of the system for combinatorial material screening.
