In this study, we reported stable tin-basedperovskite nanocrystals (NCs) using stannous acetate as the Sn2+ source because of its stronger Sn-O bonding. To preventthe oxidation of Sn2+, a thin layer of CsBr coverage wasformed in situ; tin-based perovskite NCs, Cs (x) SnBr x+2@CsBr (1 < x < 4), show a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 78.2%and high stability. The measured lifetime of PLQY decrease to halfof the initial value is & SIM;1287 h under ambient conditions and & SIM;2200 h under a nitrogen atmosphere, respectively. Furthermore,the as-fabricated light-emitting diodes based on Cs (x) SnBr x+2@CsBr NCs as the emittinglayer exhibit a maximum luminescence of 16 cd/m(2) and anexternal quantum efficiency of 0.035% with peaks at 451 and 615 nm,corresponding to the emissions of CsBr and Cs (x) SnBr x+2, respectively. This work provideda new way to obtain stable Sn-based perovskite NCs and exhibited theirpotential for application in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Abstract:Long-term instability and possible lead contamination are the two main issues limiting the widespread application of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites. Here a facile and efficient solution-phase method is demonstrated to synthesize lead-free Cs2 SnX6 (X = Br, I) with a well-defined crystal structure, long-term stability, and high yield. Based on the systematic experimental data and first-principle simulation results, Cs2 SnX6 displays excellent stability against moisture, light, and high temperature, which can be ascribed to the unique vacancy-ordered defect-variant structure, stable chemical compositions with Sn4+ , as well as the lower formation enthalpy for Cs2 SnX6 . Additionally, photodetectors based on Cs2 SnI6 are also fabricated, which show excellent performance and stability. This study provides very useful insights into the development of lead-free double perovskites with high stability.
Organometallic Compound Stabilizes All‐Inorganic Tin‐Based Perovskite Nanocrystals Against Antisolvent Post‐Treatment

Abstract:The stability of CsSnI3 nanocrystals against antisolvents is improved by incorporating zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (Zn(DDTC)2) during synthesis, resulting in thiourea formation that protects unpassivated Sn sites. The modified nanocrystals exhibit strong resistance to methyl acetate and other antisolvents, maintaining morphology, phase, and optical properties after multiple purification cycles. The isolation and purification of all‐inorganic Sn‐based perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) remain troublesome, as common antisolvents accelerate the collapse of the optically active perovskite structure. Here, we mitigate such instabilities and endow strong resistance to antisolvent by incorporating the organometallic compound zinc diethyldithiocarbamate, Zn(DDTC)2, during the solution‐based synthesis of all‐inorganic CsSnI3 nanocrystals. Thiourea is shown to form through the thermal‐driven conversion of Zn(DDTC)2 during synthesis, which binds to un‐passivated Sn sites on the crystal surface and shields it from irreversible oxidation reactions. The CsSnI3 PNCs capped with thiourea show great stability after two purification cycles using methyl acetate, with negligible change in morphology, phase, and optical properties. Moreover, the modified PNCs are resistant to other commonly used antisolvents, like ethyl acetate, 1‐pentanol, and isopropanol, offering a platform to explore all‐inorganic Sn‐based nanocrystalline thin films and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Developing solvent-free methods to synthesize lead-free perovskites is of practical importance from the viewpoint of sustainability. In this work, we use a facile mechanochemical approach to synthesize a series of lead-free Sn-based halide perovskite microcrystals (powders) in ambient conditions directly from precursor powders (CsX and SnX 2 (X = I, Br, Cl)) without any solvent. Such an approach is energy-saving and avoids the use of toxic solvents. There exists phase evolution during the mechanochemical processing of the precursor powders with CsSn 2 Br 5 to CsSnBr 3 in the first hour and finally into the stabilized phase of Cs 2 SnBr 6 after 28 days and with Cs 2 SnCl 4 to CsSnCl 3 in the first hour and finally to the stabilized phase of Cs 2 SnCl 6 after 36 days. The stabilized Cs 2 SnI 6 powders emit light centered at 930 nm under the excitation of 785 nm, and the stabilized Cs 2 SnBr 6 powders emit light centered at 682 nm under the excitation of 365 nm. Both the stabilized Cs 2 SnI 6 and Cs 2 SnBr 6 powders exhibit excellent long-term structural and optical stabilities, and the Cs 2 SnBr 6 powders have a better thermal stability than the Cs 2 SnI 6 powders. This work likely offers a green-route synthesis of lead-free halide perovskites towards large-scale manufacturing and industrialization.

Confronting the Air Instability of Cesium Tin Halide Perovskites by Metal Ion Incorporation

Abstract:Tin halide perovskite's potential as a photovoltaic absorber has not been fully realized to date, largely due to its instability in ambient air. Here, we demonstrate by both experiments and simulations that the air instability of black-phase cesium tin iodide perovskite (γ-CsSnI3) could be greatly lessened by a controlled incorporation of bismuth (Bi) ions into the crystal lattice. Hall effect measurements on films of γ-CsSnI3 suggest the unwanted formation of a tin vacancy and p-type self-doping can be effectively suppressed by the Bi incorporation. Structural and optical results indicate that the Bi incorporation markedly enhances the air stability by impeding the direct conversion of γ-CsSnI3 to zero-dimensional Cs2SnI6. By using a stochastic surface walking (SSW) method integrating neural network (NN) potential and density functional theory (DFT), it is revealed that the remarkable enhanced stability could be attributed to a combination of factors originating from lattice-contraction-induced strain, a suppressed tin vacancy, and an increased energy barrier for the transformation of γ-CsSnI3 to Cs2SnI6. This study provides physical insights into the stabilization mechanism of tin perovskites by heterovalent B-site engineering, paving the way for realizing stable and efficient lead-free perovskite photovoltaics.

Abstract:All-inorganic lead halide perovskite has emerged as an attractive semiconducting material due to its unique optoelectronic properties. However, its poor environmental stability restricts its broad application. Here, a simple method for the fabrication of CsPb2Br5/TiO2 is investigated. The introduction of p-aminobenzoic acid, which has two functional groups, is critical for the capping of amorphous TiO2 on CsPb2Br5. After calcination at 300 °C, amorphous TiO2 crystallizes into the anatase phase. The CsPb2Br5/TiO2 NCs show high long-term stability in water and enhanced stability against ultraviolet radiation and heat treatment, owing to the chemical stability of TiO2. More importantly, photo-electrochemical characterizations indicate that the formation of TiO2 shells can increase the charge separation efficiency. Hence, CsPb2Br5/TiO2 exhibits improved photoelectric activity owing to the electrical conductivity of the TiO2 in water. This study provides a new route for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices and photocatalysts based on perovskite NCs in the aqueous phase. Furthermore, the present results demonstrate that CsPb2Br5/TiO2 NCs has considerable potential to be used as a photoelectric material in optical sensing and monitoring.

Abstract:Tin-based halide perovskites have attracted great attention in the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) community with their suitable band gaps, excellent optoelectronic properties, and non-toxicity. However, because of their poor chemical stability, it is challenging to fabricate highly stable and efficient tin PSCs (TPSCs). In this study, the origin of the Sn2+ oxidation ahead of film formation is concentrated on, and it is found that the ionization of SnI2 in precursor plays a decisive role. Accordingly, SnI2 dissociation and the subsequent Sn2+ oxidation can be restricted in precursor by employing reductive complexes as additives. This dual-functional source-regulating strategy effectively helps prepare high-quality perovskite films with low Sn4+ defect densities. As a result, the unencapsulated TPSCs show a considerable power-conversion efficiency of 10.03% (certified 9.38%) and maintain 90% of its initial efficiency after 1000 h of light aging testing.

Abstract:The instability of the cesium lead halide perovskite (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) upon exposure to humidity or heat strongly hinders their applications in optoelectronic devices. In this work, an in situ adsorption strategy is adopted to directly grow uniform CsPbX3 nanocrystals (NCs) on flower-like TiO2 microspheres to achieve a hybrid structure. Benefiting from the isolation effect of flower-like structure, the as-synthesized TiO2–CsPbBr3 composites exhibit excellent water stability when soaked in water for 35 days and retain 62.7% of the initial photoluminescence (PL) emission intensity. CsPbBr3 NCs also present enhanced thermal stability under the protection of TiO2 matrix. It is intriguing that the TiO2-CsPbX3 composites with blue, green and red emissions are fabricated successfully by this method with excellent moisture and thermal stability, which provides a feasible solution for the effective application of CsPbX3 NCs in light emitting diode (LED) devices.

Abstract:Perovskites have gained significant attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. However, the poor stability of perovskites hinders their practical applications. To address this issue, we propose a facile approach to synthesize stable CsPbBr3 nanomaterials by embedding them into a SiO2 matrix followed by an in situ PbSO4 shell coating on their surfaces. After the encapsulation, the CsPbBr3@PbSO4/SiO2 powder exhibits high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY, ∼85%) due to reduced defects. Most importantly, the CsPbBr3@PbSO4/SiO2 powder shows robust stability under many harsh conditions, such as maintaining its PL in water (for 1 year), concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) aqueous solution and hydrobromic acid (HBr) aqueous solution (for 25 days), boiling water (for 24 h), high temperature (500 °C for 24 h), and light irradiation (365 nm for 3 months). This work not only provides a strategy for the facile preparation of ultrastable and efficient perovskites but also shows great potential for practical applications such as solid lighting and backlight displays.

Abstract:Colloidal nanocrystals of lead halide perovskites have recently received great attention due to their remarkable performance in optoelectronic applications (e.g., light-emitting devices, flexible electronics, and photodetectors). However, the use of lead remains of great concern due to its toxicity and bioaccumulation in the ecosystem; herein we report a strategy to address this issue by using tetravalent tin (Sn4+) instead of divalent lead (Pb2+) to synthesize stable Cs2SnI6 perovskite nanocrystals. The shapes of as-synthesized Cs2SnI6 nanocrystals are tuned from spherical quantum dots, nanorods, nanowires, and nanobelts to nanoplatelets via a facile hot-injection process using inexpensive and nontoxic commercial precursors. Abstract:The poor stability of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite is one of crucial problems limiting the practical application of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs). All-inorganic lead-free perovskite materials, with Cs replacing the organic cations and Sn replacing Pb, have shown great potential in achieving high thermal stability. However, tin-based perovskites have inevitably suffered from severe bulk recombination, attributed to Sn vacancies. In this work, we obtain CsSnIBr2 thin films with low Sn vacancy assisted by the addition of hypophosphorous acid (HPA). The HPA additive here as complexant is demonstrated to be capable of speeding up the nucleation process while inhibiting the formation of Sn4+ during the formation process of CsSnIBr2 thin films. With a mesoscopic architecture, the CsSnIBr2 PSCs exhibit efficiency-loss free in 77 days and remarkably stable power output within 9 hours at high temperatures up to 473 K.

Abstract:In mixed Sn-Pb perovskites, the synergistic properties of tin (Sn) and lead (Pb) are leveraged, effectively combining the merits of Pb-based perovskites while simultaneously reducing Pb-associated toxicity. However, the propensity for Sn to undergo facile oxidation from Sn2+ to Sn4+ poses a significant challenge to the stability of these mixed perovskites, limiting their advancement. This study proposes an innovative acetic acid (HAc)-driven synthesis approach to obtain a stable chain-like MAPb0.5Sn0.5Br3 nano-assembly. Leveraging the acidic properties of HAc serves a dual purpose. Primarily, it curtails the oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+. Secondly, it orchestrates nanocrystals (NCs) into a more uniform and ordered chain-like assembly, a consequence of hydrogen bonding and coordination interactions facilitated by the HAc. Additionally, HAc demonstrates its capability to passivate MAPb0.5Sn0.5Br3 surface through coordination bonding with unsaturated sites (i.e., Sn2+ or Pb2+), thus effectively compensating for bromide vacancies. Introducing HAc during the synthesis process yields perovskite NCs with enhanced thermal resilience, optical and water stability. Drawing upon the different stimulus responses of synthesized perovskite NCs when exposed to external environment, the optical anti-counterfeiting labels are prepared. The findings provide a potent strategy for augmenting the stability of perovskite NCs, suggesting their potential applicability in anti-counterfeiting endeavors.

Abstract:Generally, solvents used to synthesize perovskite NCs are toxic, which leads to waste liquid pollution and environmental degradation. Herein, we developed a novel environmentally friendly polar solvent method to synthesize CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs). Over 65% photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQYs) for NCs could be maintained over 45-850 h of storage time, and a maximum was 78% at 750 h. Such amazing stability in polar solvents is dominated by a ripening process, which heals surface defects. Additionally, their solid films also exhibited good moisture stability. Furthermore, CsPbBr3 NCs were applied to inkjet-printing to prepare high-quality patterned films.
