Abstract:Newton's equations of celestial mechanics are shown to possess a continuum of solutions in which the future trajectories of the N bodies are a perfect reflection of their past. These solutions evolve from zero initial velocities of the N bodies. Consequently, the future gravitational forces acting on the N bodies are also a perfect reflection of their past. The proof is carried out via Taylor series expansions. A perturbed system of equations of the N body problem is also considered. All real valued solutions of this perturbed system have no singularities on the real line. The perturbed system is shown to have a continuum of solutions that possess symmetry where the future velocities of the N bodies are a perfect reflection of their past. The positions and accelerations of the N bodies are then odd functions of the time. All N bodies then evolve from one location in space.

Abstract:The motion of astronomical bodies and the centre of mass of the system is not always well perceived by students. One of the struggles is the conceptual change of reference frame, which is the same that held back the acceptance of the Heliocentric model over the Geocentric one. To address the question, the notion of centre of mass, motion equations (and their numerical solution for a system of multiple bodies), and change of referential is introduced. The discussion is done based on conceptual and real world examples, using the solar system. Consequently, through the use of simple "do it yourself" methods and basic equations, students can debate complex motions, and have a wider and potentially effective understanding of physics.

Abstract:This paper describes a series of activities in which students investigate and use the Ptolemaic, Copernican, and Tychonic models of planetary motion. The activities guide students through using open source software to discover important observational facts, learn the necessary vocabulary, understand the fundamental properties of different theoretical models, and relate the theoretical models to observational data. After completing these activities students can make observations of a fictitious solar system and use those observations to construct models for that system.

Abstract:Celestial navigation is a technique for determining one’s geographic position by the observation of identified stars, identified planets, the Sun, and the Moon. This subject has a multitude of refinements which, although valuable to a professional navigator, tend to obscure the basic principles. I describe these principles, give an analytical solution of the classical two-star-sight problem without any dependence on prior knowledge of position, and include several examples. Some approximations and simplifications are made in the interest of clarity.

In order to clarify the reasoning of Newton, elementary and simple proofs are given to inspire earnest young students. Abstract:(revised) This is a textbook on classical mechanics at the intermediate level, but its main purpose is to serve as an introduction to a new mathematical language for physics called geometric algebra. Mechanics is most commonly formulated today in terms of the vector algebra developed by the American physicist J. Willard Gibbs, but for some applications of mechanics the algebra of complex numbers is more efficient than vector algebra, while in other applications matrix algebra works better. Geometric algebra integrates all these algebraic systems into a coherent mathematical language which not only retains the advantages of each special algebra but possesses powerful new capabilities. This book covers the fairly standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies. However, it will be seen that geometric algebra brings new insights into the treatment of nearly every topic and produces simplifications that move the subject quickly to advanced levels. That has made it possible in this book to carry the treatment of two major topics in mechanics well beyond the level of other textbooks. A few words are in order about the unique treatment of these two topics, namely, rotational dynamics and celestial mechanics.

Abstract:Numerical simulations are playing an increasingly important role in modern science. In this work it is suggested to use a numerical study of the famous perihelion motion of the planet Mercury (one of the prime observables supporting Einsteins General Relativity) as a test case to teach numerical simulations to high school students. The paper includes details about the development of the code as well as a discussion of the visualization of the results. In addition a method is discussed that allows one to estimate the size of the effect as well as the uncertainty of the approach a priori. At the same time this enables the students to double check the results found numerically. The course is structured into a basic block and two further refinements which aim at more advanced students.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold: First, we give a formal introduction to the basics of the mathematical framework of classical mechanics. Along the way, we prove a Hamiltonian and a Lagrangian version of Noether's Theorem, an important result concerning continuous symmetries of physical systems. At the end, we prove a new statement about orbit cylinders on homotopies of stable regular energy hypersurfaces. The main question we answer is what is the dynamical meaning of stability? The second aim is to provide a didactical framework for introducing advanced mathematics, which can also be of used in other topics. A broad range of established methods belonging to the realm of cognitive activation as well as formative assessment techniques are used.

Abstract:Kepler's 2nd law, the law of the areas, is usually taught in passing, between the 1st and the 3rd laws, to be explained "later on" as a consequence of angular momentum conservation. The 1st and 3rd laws receive the bulk of attention; the 1st law because of the paradigm shift significance in overhauling the previous circular models with epicycles of both Ptolemy and Copernicus, the 3rd because of its convenience to the standard curriculum in having a simple mathematical statement that allows for quantitative homework assignments and exams. In this work I advance a method for teaching the 2nd law that combines the paradigm-shift significance of the 1st and the mathematical proclivity of the 3rd. The approach is rooted in the historical method, indeed, placed in its historical context, Kepler's 2nd is as revolutionary as the 1st: as the 1st law does away with the epicycle, the 2nd law does away with the equant. This way of teaching the 2nd law also formulates the "time=area" statement quantitatively, in the way of Kepler's equation, M = E - e sin E (relating mean anomaly M, eccentric anomaly E, and eccentricity e), where the left-hand side is time and the right-hand side is area. In doing so, it naturally paves the way to finishing the module with an active learning computational exercise, for instance, to calculate the timing and location of Mars' next opposition. This method is partially based on Kepler's original thought, and should thus best be applied to research-oriented students, such as junior and senior physics/astronomy undergraduates, or graduate students.

Abstract:Heliophysics is the system science of the physical connections between the Sun and the solar system. As the physics of the local cosmos, it embraces space weather and planetary habitability. The wider view of comparative heliophysics forms a template for conditions in exoplanetary systems and provides a view over time of the aging Sun and its magnetic activity, of the heliosphere in different settings of the interstellar medium and subject to stellar impacts, of the space physics over evolving planetary dynamos, and of the long-term influence on planetary atmospheres by stellar radiation and wind. Based on a series of NASA-funded summer schools for early-career researchers, this textbook is intended for students in physical sciences in later years of their university training and for beginning graduate students in fields of solar, stellar, (exo-)planetary, and planetary-system sciences. The book emphasizes universal processes from a perspective that draws attention to what provides Earth (and similar (exo-)planets) with a relatively stable setting in which life as we know it could thrive. The text includes 200 "Activities" in the form of exercises, explorations, literature readings, "what if" challenges, and group discussion topics; many of the Activities provide additional information complementing the main text. Solutions and discussions are included in an Appendix for a selection of the exercises.

Abstract:Newton's deduction of the inverse square law from Kepler's ellipse and area laws together with his "superb theorem" on the gravitation attraction of spherically symmetric bodies, are the major steps leading to the discovery of the law of universal gravitation (Principia, 1687). The goal of this article is to revisit some "well-known" events in the history of science, and moreover, to provide elementary and clean-cut proofs, still in the spirit of Newton, of these major advances. Being accessible to first year university students, the educational aspect of such a coherent presentation should not be overlooked.

Abstract:IN these 160 pages, the author has endeavoured with success to bring before his readers, in as simple a way as is consistent with the subject, the elements of spherical astronomy. With the exception of a small knowledge of the rudiments of the differential calculus, the mathematical ability is by no means taxed. The order in which the subject-matter has been arranged, and the field which is covered, can be gathered from the following short summary. After dealing first with the sphere generally, and the form and daily motion of the earth, the annual motion round the sun, and the methods of the transformation of coordinates, the measurement of time is next explained, in which Kepler's equation, the equation of time, and the transformation of mean into sidereal time, and vice versâ, are discussed. Then follows a chapter in which the movements of the moon are clearly expounded.

Abstract:Based on the catalogue data, it is presented an approach for modeling and simulating the celestial background observed in any time and at any places. All this can be done with the Hipparcos catalogue in the following way. First, with a series of time conversion, the star position data of the catalogue epoch is converted into the position data of the named time. Then, the star visional coordinate is converted into the observation coordinate, and the star visional position is achieved in accordance with the observe at the named time. Finally, the celestial background at various observing time and places can be rendered using the modeling result.

Abstract:In this paper, two models of interest for Celestial Mechanics are presented and analysed, using both analytic and numerical techniques, from the point of view of the possible presence of regular and/or chaotic motion, as well as the stability of the considered orbits. The first model, presented in a Hamiltonian formalism, can be used to describe the motion of a satellite around the Earth, taking into account both the non-spherical shape of our planet and the third-body gravitational influence of Sun and Moon. Using semi-analytical techniques coming from Normal Form and Nekhoroshev theories it is possible to provide stability estimates for the orbital elements of its geocentric motion. The second dynamical system presented can be used as a simplified model to describe the motion of a particle in an elliptic galaxy having a central massive core, and is constructed as a refraction billiard where an inner dynamics, induced by a Keplerian potential, is coupled with an external one, where a harmonic oscillator-type potential is considered. The investigation of the dynamics is carried on by using tools of ODEs' theory and is focused on studying the trajectories' properties in terms of periodicity, stability and, possibly, chaoticity.

Abstract:Relativistic modelling of rotational motion of extended bodies represents one of the most complicated problems of Applied Relativity. The relativistic reference systems of IAU (2000) give a suitable theoretical framework for such a modelling. Recent developments in the post-Newtonian theory of Earth rotation in the limit of rigidly rotating multipoles are reported below. All components of the theory are summarized and the results are demonstrated. The experience with the relativistic Earth rotation theory can be directly applied to model the rotational motion of other celestial bodies. The high-precision theories of rotation of the Moon, Mars and Mercury can be expected to be of interest in the near future.

Abstract:Newton's Theorem of Revolving Orbits derives the force that is necessary to explain a particular precession that leaves the shape of an orbit unchanged. Newton showed that for an orbiting body that is already subject to any central force, the inclusion of an additional inverse-cube central force will change that body's angular speed without affecting its radial motion; this leads to the orbit's precession. After reviewing the relevant concepts of Kepler orbits, we present a full description and explanation of Newton's theorem using modern physical and mathematical approaches aimed at a general audience. We specifically highlight the use of the transformation between a rotating reference frame and an inertial reference frame, making this a suitable topic for an upper-level undergraduate mechanics course.
