Abstract:A new synthetic methodology for the synthesis of 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenes from ortho-aryl alkynyl benzyl alcohols and arenes via a Tf2O-mediated formal [5 + 2] annulation reaction has been achieved. From this transformation, structurally diverse 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenes were achieved in moderate to good yields. This transformation probably involves an intermolecular Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation and a subsequent intramolecular 7-endo-dig cyclization in one pot, highlighting the high efficiency, regioselectivity, and step-economy of this protocol.

Abstract:The first umpolung strategy for the cycloacylation of fullerene using a N-heterocyclic carbene organocatalyst is reported. The coupling of [60]fullerene with different structural α,β-unsaturated aldehydes efficiently furnishes interesting [60]fullerene-fused cyclopentan-1-ones or cyclohex-2-en-1-ones in good to excellent yields. This new reaction displays a wide substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance, and diverse substituents such as aryl, heteroaryl, alkenyl, alkyl, and ester can be installed by using the corresponding enals.

Abstract:The first example of metal-free-catalyzed multicomponent annulation reaction of [60]fullerene has been developed for concise and efficient construction of novel [60]fullerene-fused 1,2-tetrahydrocarbazoles. Using inexpensive and readily available I2 as a catalyst, [60]fullerene, ketones, and indoles undergo a formal [2+2+2] annulation process to conveniently assemble diverse 1,2-tetrahydrocarbazoles. Mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction proceeds through I2-promoted generation of a 3-vinylindole structure with the characteristics of a conjugated diene followed by cycloaddition to [60]fullerene.

Abstract:A novel palladium(0)-catalyzed dearomatizing [2+2+1] spiroannulation of 1-bromo-2-naphthols with aryl iodides and alkynes was developed for the rapid assembly of spiro[indene-1,1'-naphthalen]-2'-ones. This three-component cascade reaction was realized through consecutive Catellani-type C-H activation, unsymmetrical biaryl coupling, alkyne migratory insertion, and arene dearomatization. The potential utility of our method is illustrated by the one-step construction of the polycyclic skeletons of dalesconolsA and B from alkyne-tethered aryl iodides and 1-bromo-2-naphthol.

Abstract:Here we report that the chemoselective activation of Tsuji's 2-(cyanomethyl)allyl carbonates to generate the palladium-trimethylenemethane 1,3-dipoles via a deprotonation strategy can be realized in the presence of Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates from substantial activated ketones. The following S(N)2 '-addition enables the formation of new 1,3-dipole species having an activated alkene moiety through a second deprotonation process, which then undergo cascade [1+2]/[3+2] annulations to furnish complex bicyclic [3.1.0]hexane frameworks having three contiguous quaternary stereogenic centers with good to excellent enantioselectivity. Moreover, by using benzoyl aldehyde-derived substrates, a [1+4]/[3+2] annulation sequence is similarly developed to produce fused cyclopenta[b]furan architectures.
Assembly of Janus Fullerenol: a Novel Approach to Prepare Rich Carbon Structures

Abstract:C(60)(OH)(8) is a fullerenol with all the hydroxyl groups located in the same hemisphere. It combines the fascinating assembly behaviour of a Janus particle and the unique properties of a fullerene. Since the range of interparticle hydrophobic attraction in water is much longer than the particle size, C(60)(OH)(8) has a strong tendency to form aggregates. At concentrations above 1.0 x 10(-6) M, the R(g) of the aggregate is 110 nm and the aggregation number reaches 2.5 x 10(5). However, the conformation of the aggregate is not condensed, C(60)(OH)(8) can still adjust its position by transportation or rotation. Therefore, when deposited on the surface, C(60)(OH)(8) assembles into a spherical structure or a single-layered fiber on the hydrophilic surface, but it forms a toroidal structure with concentric rings on the hydrophobic surface. If illuminated with light during assembly, fibers composed of multi-braids are observed on the hydrophilic surface. Our work demonstrated that the assembly of Janus fullerenol offered a new approach to prepare novel carbon structures.

Abstract:AbstractA novel and expedient cascade strategy has been demonstrated for the synthesis of fused benzo‐aza‐oxa‐[5‐6‐5] tetracycles in high yields and diastereoselectivities (up to 20 : 1 dr). The strategy was fulfilled through palladium‐catalyzed oxidative convergent assembly of functionally divergent anilines and 3‐butenoic acid with five chemical bonds constructed. Coupled with control experiments and deuterium labelled studies, DFT calculations were performed for the proposed mechanism. The utility of the illustrated strategy is emphasized by gram‐scale syntheses, late‐stage functionalization, and the transformation to a key core of natural products such as martinellic acid and seneciobipyrrolidine.

Abstract:A novel and efficient palladium-catalyzed cascade annulation/arylthiolation reaction has been developed to afford functionalized 3-sulfenylbenzofuran and 3-sulfenylindole derivatives in moderate to good yields from readily available 2-alkynylphenols and 2-alkynylamines in ionic liquids. This protocol provides a valuable synthetic tool for the assembly of a wide range of 3-sulfenylbenzofuran and 3-sulfenylindole derivatives with high atom- and step-economy and exceptional functional group tolerance. Moreover, the employment of ionic liquids under mild reaction conditions makes this transformation green and practical. Furthermore, this approach enriched current C-S bond formation chemistry, making a valuable and practical method in synthetic and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract:Molecular recognition of fullerene using various host compounds is well-known in literature. But most studies focus on host-guest complexation in solution using host compounds with a single binding cavity. Herein, we report a series of highly preorganized janusarene derivatives with homoditopic binding sites. These novel janusarenes can bind and align various fullerenes such as C60, C70, C84, and Gd@C82 in a highly efficient manner. Robust shape complementary association and assembly are observed in solution, in the bulk solid state, in the liquid crystalline state, or on surface, and the assembled structures are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) titration, X-ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy.

Abstract:Here we report a three-component auto-tandem reaction of 1,3-enyne-tethered carbonyls, organoboronic reagents, and suitable nucleophiles catalyzed by palladium, proceeding through consecutive intramolecular vinylogous addition, Suzuki coupling, and allylic alkylation. This process exhibited high chemo- and regioselectivity with 1,3,4-trifunctionalization of the 1,3-enyne motif, and a wide range of 2H-chromenes, 1,2-dihydroquinolines, benzo[b]oxepines, 1,7-annulated indoles, and other frameworks were efficiently constructed in fair to good yields and E/Z selectivity.

Abstract:The synthesis of bi- and tricyclic structures incorporating pyrrolidone rings is disclosed, starting from resonance-stabilized acetamides and cyclic α,β-unsaturated-γ-oxycarbonyl derivatives. This process involves an intermolecular Tsuji–Trost allylation/intramolecular nitrogen 1,4-addition sequence. Crucial for the success of this bis-nucleophile/bis-electrophile [3 + 2] annulation is its well-defined step chronology in combination with the total chemoselectivity of the former step. When the newly formed annulation product carries a properly located o-haloaryl moiety at the nitrogen substituent, a further intramolecular keto α-arylation can join the cascade, thereby forming two new cycles and three new bonds in the same synthetic operation.
