Abstract:The article investigates how during the period from the end of the Wars of Religion to the Revolution of the 18th century in France the official terminology used to name the Calvinist minority was appeared and changed. Behind the choice of the word was the image that the authorities impressed upon their subjects. As sources, were used royal edicts and declarations, ministerial papers, documents of the Parlement of Paris and of the clergy assembly, as well as treatises, dictionaries and encyclopedias of the 17th-18th centuries. For many years, the official designation of the French Calvinists in all legislative acts was the cumbersome expression “adherents of the so-called reformed religion” which implied a resolute denial of the name of “reformed religion” used by the Calvinists themselves. With the publication of the Edict of Fontainebleau (1685) by Louis XIV, the term “new converts” began to be used to name the Calvinists, indicating that now all the subjects of the king had converted to Catholicism. The term “Huguenots” in the 18th century ceased to be used while speaking about contemporary realities. The evolution of religious policy of the government was accompanied by a change in official terminology. In the second half of the 18th century, when the question of the need to grant civil rights to Calvinists was discussed, in administrative correspondence between the king, ministers and magistrates of the Parlement of Paris, they constantly called adherents of other religions by their proper names and talked about Protestants and Calvinists. But in the text of the royal edict they were called “those who do not profess the Catholic religion”. The terms “Protestant” and “Calvinist” were avoided by the authors of official documents, thereby emphasizing that there was only one recognized religion in the kingdom.
