Abstract:This paper provides several characterizations of final functors between internal groupoids in Barr-exact categories. In particular, it is proved that an internal functor between groupoids is final if and only if it is full and essentially surjective.

Abstract:We define notions of regularity and (Barr-)exactness for 2-categories. In fact, we define three notions of regularity and exactness, each based on one of the three canonical ways of factorising a functor in Cat: as (surjective on objects, injective on objects and fully faithful), as (bijective on objects, fully faithful), and as (bijective on objects and full, faithful). The correctness of our notions is justified using the theory of lex colimits introduced by Lack and the second author. Along the way, we develop an abstract theory of regularity and exactness relative to a kernel--quotient factorisation, extending earlier work of Street and others.

On cofinal functors of $\infty$-bicategories

Abstract:In this work, we study the notion of cofinal functor of $\infty$-bicategories with respect to the theory of partially lax colimits. The main result of this paper is a characterization of cofinal functors of $\infty$-bicategories via generalizations of the conditions of Quillen's Theorem A. As a key ingredient for the proof of our main theorem we produce for every functor of $\infty$-bicategories $f:\mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{D}$ an outer 2-Cartesian fibration $\mathbb{F}(\mathbb{C})\to \mathbb{D}$ which we identify it as the free fibration on the functor $f$.

Abstract:We present a criterion for $2$-final $(2,1)$-functors, analoguous to the classical one for final $1$-functor: a $(2,1)$-functor $F \colon A \to B$ is $2$-final if and only if, for any object $b$ of $B$, the slice $(2,1)$-category $b / F$ is nonempty, connected and simply connected. We also give a combinatorial presentation of paths and homotopies of paths in a $(2,1)$-category.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of an exact dg category, which is a simultaneous generalization of the notions of exact category in the sense of Quillen and of pretriangulated dg category in the sense of Bondal--Kapranov. It is also a differential graded analogue of Barwick's notion of exact $\infty$-category and a differential graded enhancement of Nakaoka--Palu's notion of extriangulated category. It is completely different from Positselski's notion of exact DG-category. Our motivations come for example from the categories appearing in the additive categorification of cluster algebras with coefficients. We give a definition in complete analogy with Quillen's but where the category of kernel-cokernel pairs is replaced with a more sophisticated homotopy category. We obtain a number of fundamental results concerning the dg nerve, the dg derived category, tensor products and functor categories with exact dg target. For example, we show that for a given dg category $\mathcal{A}$ with additive homotopy category $H^0(\mathcal{A})$, there is a bijection between exact structures on $\mathcal{A}$ and exact structures (in the sense of Barwick) on the dg nerve of $\mathcal{A}$. We also show the existence of the greatest exact structure on a (small) dg category with additive homotopy category. This generalizes a theorem of Rump for Quillen exact categories.

On functor double $\infty$-categories

Abstract:In this paper, we study double $\infty$-categories of double functors. To this end, we exhibit the cartesian closed structure of the $\infty$-category of double $\infty$-categories and various localizations. We prove a theorem that characterizes the companions and conjoints in functor double $\infty$-categories via the notion of companionable and conjointable 2-cells in double $\infty$-categories. Moreover, we show that under suitable conditions, functor double $\infty$-categories are horizontally closed. Throughout the paper, we highlight a few applications to $(\infty,2)$-category theory and indexed exponentiability.

Exact dg categories II : The embedding theorem

Abstract:For an exact dg category $\mathcal A$, we introduce its bounded dg derived category $\mathcal{D}^b_{dg}(\mathcal A)$ and establish the universal exact morphism from $\mathcal A$ to $\mathcal{D}^b_{dg}(\mathcal A)$. We prove that the dg quotient of an exact dg category by a subcategory of projective-injectives carries a canonical exact structure. We show that exact dg categories reproduce under tensor products and functor dg categories. We apply our results to 0-Auslander extriangulated categories and confirm a conjecture by Fang-Gorsky-Palu-Plamondon-Pressland for the algebraic case.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of exact dg category, which provides a differential graded enhancement of Nakaoka--Palu's notion of extriangulated category. We give a definition in complete analogy with Quillen's but where the category of kernel-cokernel pairs is replaced with a more sophisticated homotopy category. We introduce the notion of stable dg category, and prove that the $H^0$-category of an exact dg category $\mathcal{A}$ is triangulated if and only if $\mathcal{A}$ is stable. We illustrate our theory with several examples including the homotopy category of two-term complexes and Amiot's fundamental domain for generalized cluster categories.

A Note on the Non-Existence of Functors

Abstract:We consider several types of non-existence theorems for functors. For example, there are no nontrivial functors from the category of groups (or the category of pointed sets, or vector spaces) to any small category. Another type of questions that we consider are questions about nonexistence of subfunctors and quotients of the identity functor on the category of groups (or abelian groups). For example, there is no a natural non-trivial way to define an abelian subgroup of a group, or a perfect quotient group of a group. As an auxiliary result we prove that, for any non-trivial subfunctor $F$ of the identity functor on the category of groups, any group can be embedded into a simple group that lies in the essential image of $F.$ The paper concludes with a few questions regarding the non-existence of certain (co-)augmented functors in the $\infty$-category of spaces.

Abstract:The main result concerns a bicategorical factorization system on the bicategory $\mathrm{Cat}$ of categories and functors. Each functor $A\xra{f} B$ factors up to isomorphism as $A\xra{j}E\xra{p}B$ where $j$ is what we call an ultimate functor and $p$ is what we call a groupoid fibration. Every right adjoint functor is ultimate. Functors whose ultimate factor is a right adjoint are shown to have bearing on the theory of polynomial functors.

Left regular representations of Garside categories II. Finiteness properties of topological full groups

Abstract:We study topological full groups attached to groupoid models for left regular representations of Garside categories. Groups arising in this way include Thompson's group $V$ and many of its variations such as Röver-Nekrashevych groups. Our key observation is that a Garside structure for the underlying small category induces a new Garside structure for a new small category of bisections, and that our topological full group coincides with the fundamental group of the enveloping groupoid of the new category. As a consequence, we solve the word problem and identify general criteria for establishing finiteness properties of our topological full groups. In particular, we show that topological full groups arising from products of shifts of finite type are of type ${\rm F}_{\infty}$, answering a natural question left open by Matui.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}:=\mathcal{C}(G,\omega,H,\psi)$ be a finite group scheme-theoretical category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\ge 0$ as defined by the first author. For any indecomposable exact module category over $\mathcal{C}$, we classify its simple objects and provide an expression for their projective covers, in terms of double cosets and projective representations of certain closed subgroup schemes of $G$. This upgrades a result of Ostrik for group-theoretical fusion categories in characteristic $0$, and generalizes our previous work for the case $\omega=1$. As a byproduct, we describe the simples and indecomposable projectives of $\mathcal{C}$. Finally, we apply our results to describe the blocks of the center of ${\rm Coh}(G,\omega)$.

Abstract:Let be an inner form of a general linear group over a non-Archimedean local field. We fix an arbitrary irreducible representation of . Building on the work of Lapid-Mínguez on the irreducibility of parabolic inductions, we show how to define a full subcategory of the category of smooth representations of some , on which the parabolic induction functor is fully-faithful. A key ingredient of our proof for the fully-faithfulness is constructions of indecomposable representations of length 2. Such result for a special situation has been previously applied in proving the local non-tempered Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for non-Archimedean general linear groups. In this article, we apply the fully-faithful result to prove a certain big derivative arising from Jacquet functor satisfies the property that its socle is irreducible and has multiplicity one in the Jordan-Hölder sequence of the big derivative.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr {C}(G,H,\psi)$ be a finite group scheme-theoretical category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\ge 0$ as introduced by the first author. Abstract:We develop the theory of exact completions of regular $\infty$-categories, and show that the $\infty$-categorical exact completion (resp. hypercompletion) of an abelian category recovers the connective half of its bounded (resp. unbounded) derived $\infty$-category. Along the way, we prove that a finitely complete $\infty$-category is exact and additive if and only if it is prestable, extending a classical characterization of abelian categories. We also establish $\infty$-categorical versions of Barr's embedding theorem and Makkai's image theorem.

Abstract:We develop a general theory of (extended) inner autoequivalences of objects of any 2-category, generalizing the theory of isotropy groups to the 2-categorical setting. We show how dense subcategories let one compute isotropy in the presence of binary coproducts, unifying various known one-dimensional results and providing tractable computational tools in the two-dimensional setting. In particular, we show that the isotropy 2-group of a monoidal category coincides with its Picard 2-group, i.e., the 2-group on its weakly invertible objects.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group acting on a category $\mathcal{C}$. We give a definition for a functor $F\colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{C}'$ to be a $G$-covering and three constructions of the orbit category $\mathcal{C}/G$, which generalizes the notion of a Galois covering of locally finite-dimensional categories with group $G$ whose action on $\mathcal{C}$ is free and locally bonded defined by Gabriel. Here $\mathcal{C}/G$ is defined for any category $\mathcal{C}$ and we do not require that the action of $G$ is free or locally bounded. We show that a $G$-covering is a universal "$G$-invariant" functor and is essentially given by the canonical functor $\mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{C}/G$. By using this we improve a covering technique for derived equivalence. Also we prove theorems describing the relationships between smash product construction and the orbit category construction by Cibils and Marcos (2006) without the assumption that the $G$-action is free. The orbit category construction by a cyclic group generated by an auto-equivalence modulo natural isomorphisms (e.g., the construction of cluster categories) is justified by a notion of the "colimit orbit category". In addition, we give a presentation of the orbit category of a category with a monoid action by a quiver with relations, which enables us to calculate many examples.

Abstract:Internal categories feature notions of limit and completeness, as originally proposed in the context of the effective topos. This paper sets out the theory of internal completeness in a general context, spelling out the details of the definitions of limit and completeness and clarifying some subtleties. Remarkably, complete internal categories are also cocomplete and feature a suitable version of the adjoint functor theorem. Such results are understood as consequences of the intrinsic smallness of internal categories.

Abstract:Split opfibrations are functors equipped with a suitable choice of opcartesian lifts. The purpose of this paper is to characterise internal split opfibrations through separating the structure of a suitable choice of lifts from the property of these lifts being opcartesian. The underlying structure of an internal split opfibration is captured by an internal functor equipped with an internal cofunctor, while the property may be expressed as a pullback condition, akin to the simple condition on an internal functor to be an internal discrete opfibration. Furthermore, this approach provides two additional characterisations of internal split opfibrations, via the décalage construction and strict factorisation systems. For small categories, this theory clarifies several aspects of delta lenses which arise in computer science.

A categorical approach to inverse semigroups, étale groupoids, and their C*-algebras

Abstract:We introduce a category of inverse semigroup actions and a category of étale groupoids. We show that there are three functors which send inverse semigroups to their spectral actions, inverse semigroup actions to their transformation groupoids, and étale groupoids to their groupoid C*-algebras, respectively. The composition of these functors is naturally equivalent to the already known functor which sends inverse semigroups to their C*-algebras. This result is a categorical version of the theorem by Paterson which states that the inverse semigroup C*-algebras coincide the groupoid C*-algebras of the universal groupoids. We also construct a functor from the category of étale groupoids to the category of inverse semigroup actions sending étale groupoids to their slice actions, and show that this functor is right adjoint to the functor sending inverse semigroup actions to their transformation groupoids.

Abstract:We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories, with a particular focus on classes of examples of $\mathbb{F}_1$-linear nature. Our main results are analogues of theorems of Quillen and Schlichting, relating the $K$-theory or Grothendieck-Witt theories of proto-exact categories defined using the (hermitian) $Q$-construction and group completion.
