Abstract:We introduce a category of inverse semigroup actions and a category of étale groupoids. We show that there are three functors which send inverse semigroups to their spectral actions, inverse semigroup actions to their transformation groupoids, and étale groupoids to their groupoid C*-algebras, respectively. The composition of these functors is naturally equivalent to the already known functor which sends inverse semigroups to their C*-algebras. This result is a categorical version of the theorem by Paterson which states that the inverse semigroup C*-algebras coincide the groupoid C*-algebras of the universal groupoids. We also construct a functor from the category of étale groupoids to the category of inverse semigroup actions sending étale groupoids to their slice actions, and show that this functor is right adjoint to the functor sending inverse semigroup actions to their transformation groupoids.

### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? The paper "A CATEGORICAL APPROACH TO INVERSE SEMIGROUPS, ÉTALE GROUPOIDS, AND THEIR C*-ALGEBRAS" aims to solve the relationship problems among inverse semigroups, étale groupoids and their C*-algebras. Specifically, the authors unify and extend the existing results between these mathematical structures by introducing some new categories and functors. #### Main problems and solutions 1. **Unified construction**: - **Problem**: When existing methods construct inverse semigroups and étale groupoids as C*-algebras respectively, there is a lack of a unified framework. - **Solution**: The author introduced the categories of inverse semigroup actions and étale groupoids, and defined three functors: - Map an inverse semigroup to its spectral actions, - Map an inverse semigroup action to its transformation groupoids, - Map an étale groupoid to its groupoid C*-algebras. The combination of these functors is naturally equivalent to the known functor that maps an inverse semigroup to its C*-algebras, thus providing a categorical version of Paterson's theorem. 2. **Properties of functors**: - **Problem**: How to establish functor relationships between different types of mathematical objects and ensure that these functors have good properties (such as adjointness). - **Solution**: The author proved that the functor from étale groupoids to inverse semigroup actions is the right adjoint of another functor, and showed the good behavior of these functors on locally compact Hausdorff spaces. 3. **Generalize existing results**: - **Problem**: How to generalize the existing results about inverse semigroups and étale groupoids to a wider category. - **Solution**: By introducing couple morphisms (a new type of morphism), the author overcame the problem that continuous groupoid homomorphisms cannot naturally induce * - homomorphisms between groupoid C*-algebras. This enables them to handle these problems in a larger category and also applies to non - Hausdorff groupoids. #### Explanation of formulas and concepts - **Inverse semigroup**: A semigroup \( S \) satisfies that for each element \( s\in S \), there exists a unique \( s^*\in S \) such that \( ss^*s = s \) and \( s^*ss^* = s^* \). - **Spectral action**: For an inverse semigroup \( S \), its spectral action \( (S,\hat{E}(S),\beta_S) \) is a triple, where \( \hat{E}(S) \) is the character space on the set \( E(S) \) of idempotents of \( S \), and \( \beta_S \) is the action of \( S \) on \( \hat{E}(S) \). - **Transformation groupoid**: Given an inverse semigroup action \( (S, X,\alpha) \), its transformation groupoid \( S\ltimes_\alpha X \) is a set composed of \( (s, x)\in S\times X \) satisfying \( x\in D_\alpha^s \), and with a specific equivalence relation and topological structure. - **Groupoid C*-algebra**: For an étale groupoid \( G \), its groupoid C*-algebra \( C^*(G) \) is a * - algebra composed of all compactly supported continuous functions of \( G \), and with a specific multiplication.
