Abstract:The algebra of ${\rm GL}_n$-invariants of $m$-tuples of $n\times n$ matrices with respect to the action by simultaneous conjugation is a classical topic in case of infinite base field. On the other hand, in case of a finite field generators of polynomial invariants even in case of a pair of $2\times 2$ matrices are not known. Working over an arbitrary field we classified all ${\rm GL}_2$-orbits on $m$-tuples of $2\times 2$ nilpotent matrices for all $m>0$. As a consequence, we obtained a minimal separating set for the algebra of ${\rm GL}_2$-invariant polynomial functions of $m$-tuples of $2\times 2$ nilpotent matrices. We also described the least possible number of elements of a separating set for an algebra of invariant polynomial functions over a finite field.

Abstract:In this paper we study the algebra of graph invariants, focusing mainly on the invariants of simple graphs. All other invariants, such as sorted eigenvalues, degree sequences and canonical permutations, belong to this algebra. In fact, every graph invariant is a linear combination of the basic graph invariants which we study in this paper. To prove that two graphs are isomorphic, a number of basic invariants are required, which are called separator invariants. The minimal set of separator invariants is also the minimal basic generator set for the algebra of graph invariants. We find lower and upper bounds for the minimal number of generator/separator invariants needed for proving graph isomorphism. Finally we find a sufficient condition for Ulam's conjecture to be true based on Redfield's enumeration formula.

Stability and invariant norms of arbitrary sets of 2x2 matrices

Abstract:Invariant norms, also called Barabanov norms, are defined in $R^d$ for any compact family $\mathcal A$ of $d \times d$ matrices. They correspond to the linear switching system, which is a differential equation $\dot x(t) = A(t)x(t)$, where $A(t) \in \mathcal A$ for each $t$. The invariant norm identifies the trajectories $x(t)$ of the fastest asymptotic growth as $t\to +\infty$. It also solves the stability problem. This norm is difficult to construct even for a pair of matrices. We show that in case $d=2$ the invariant norm can be found explicitly for every compact matrix family $\mathcal A$. If $\mathcal A$ does not contain a dominant matrix with a real spectrum, then this norm is always unique (up to a multiplier) and is $C^1$, otherwise, there may be infinitely many norms. All of them can be found and classified.

A minimal generating system and a homogeneous system of parameters for R_{3,3} are determined. Homogeneous systems of parameters for R_{3,2}, R_{4,2} are also pointed out.

Abstract:Representation theorems for both isotropic and anisotropic functions are of prime importance in both theoretical and applied mechanics. The Eshelby inclusion problem is very fundamental, and is of particular importance in the design of advanced functional composite materials. In this paper, we discuss about two-dimensional Eshelby tensors (denoted as $M^{(2)}$). Eshelby tensors satisfy the minor index symmetry $M_{ijkl}^{(2)}=M_{jikl}^{(2)}=M_{ijlk}^{(2)}$ and have wide applications in many fields of mechanics. In view of the representation of two-dimensional irreducible tensors in complex field, we obtain a minimal integrity basis of ten isotropic invariants of $M^{(2)}$. Remarkably, note that an integrity basis is always a functional basis, we further confirm that the minimal integrity basis is also an irreducible function basis of isotropic invariants of $M^{(2)}$.

Abstract:We describe the -invariant of a semisimple algebraic group over a generic splitting field of a Tits algebra of in terms of the -invariant over the base field. As a consequence we prove a 10-year-old conjecture of Quéguiner-Mathieu, Semenov, and Zainoulline on the -invariant of groups of type . In the case of type we also provide explicit formulas for the first component and in some cases for the second component of the -invariant.

Abstract:In both real and complex cases, we establish the connection of the problem about $2$-dimensional linear subspaces the most deviating from the coordinate ones with one simply formulated optimization problem for isoperimetric polygons in Euclidean spaces. This study thereby provides a new geometrical point of view on the $2$-dimensional case of the problem formulated by Goreinov, Tyrtyshnikov and Zamarashkin \cite{GTZ1997}, and at the same time presents a new application of the results by Hausmann and Knutson \cite{HK1997}.

Abstract:This paper studies separating invariants: mappings on D -dimensional domains which are invariant to an appropriate group action and which separate orbits. The motivation for this study comes from the usefulness of separating invariants in proving universality of equivariant neural network architectures. We observe that in several cases the cardinality of separating invariants proposed in the machine learning literature is much larger than the dimension D . As a result, the theoretical universal constructions based on these separating invariants are unrealistically large. Our goal in this paper is to resolve this issue. We show that when a continuous family of semi-algebraic separating invariants is available, separation can be obtained by randomly selecting of these invariants. We apply this methodology to obtain an efficient scheme for computing separating invariants for several classical group actions which have been studied in the invariant learning literature. Examples include matrix multiplication actions on point clouds by permutations, rotations, and various other linear groups. Often the requirement of invariant separation is relaxed and only generic separation is required. In this case, we show that only invariants are required. More importantly, generic invariants are often significantly easier to compute, as we illustrate by discussing generic and full separation for weighted graphs. Finally we outline an approach for proving that separating invariants can be constructed also when the random parameters have finite precision.

Two classes of minimal generic fundamental invariants for tensors

Abstract:Motivated by the problems raised by Bürgisser and Ikenmeyer, we discuss two classes of minimal generic fundamental invariants for tensors of order 3. The first one is defined on $\otimes^3 \mathbb{C}^m$, where $m=n^2-1$. We study its construction by obstruction design introduced by Bürgisser and Ikenmeyer, which partially answers one problem raised by them. The second one is defined on $\mathbb{C}^{\ell m}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{mn}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{n\ell}$. We study its evaluation on the matrix multiplication tensor $\langle\ell,m,n\rangle$ and unit tensor $\langle n^2 \rangle$ when $\ell=m=n$. The evaluation on the unit tensor leads to the definition of Latin cube and 3-dimensional Alon-Tarsi problem. We generalize some results on Latin square to Latin cube, which enrich the understanding of 3-dimensional Alon-Tarsi problem. It is also natural to generalize the constructions to tensors of other orders. We illustrate the distinction between even and odd dimensional generalizations by concrete examples. Finally, some open problems in related fields are raised.

Abstract:In this paper, we first introduce the invertibility of even-order tensors and the separable tensors, including separable symmetry tensors and separable anti-symmetry tensors, defined respectively as the sum and the algebraic sum of rank-1 tensors generated by the tensor product of some vectors, say, $v_{1}, v_{2}, \ldots, v_{m}$. We show that the $m!$ sumrands, each in form $v_{\sigma(1)}\times v_{\sigma(2)}\times\ldots\times v_{\sigma(m)}$, are linearly independent if $v_{1},v_{2}, \ldots, v_{m}$ are linearly independent, where $\sigma$ is any permutation on $\set{1,2,\ldots,m}$. We offer a class of tensors to achieve the upper bound for $\rank(A) \leq 6$ for all $A\in R^{3\times 3\times 3}$. We also show that each $3\times 3\times 3$ anti-symmetric tensor is separable.

Abstract:This paper presents algebraic methods for the study of polynomial relative invariants, when the group G formed by the symmetries and relative symmetries is a compact Lie group. We deal with the case when the subgroup H of symmetries is normal in G with index m, m greater or equal to 2. For this, we develop the invariant theory of compact Lie groups acting on complex vector spaces. This is the starting point for the study of relative invariants and the computation of their generators. We first obtain the space of the invariants under the subgroup $H$ of $\Gamma$ as a direct sum of $m$ submodules over the ring of invariants under the whole group. Then, based on this decomposition, we construct a Hilbert basis of the ring of G-invariants from a Hilbert basis of the ring of H-invariants. In both results the knowledge of the relative Reynolds operators defined on H-invariants is shown to be an essential tool to obtain the invariants under the whole group. The theory is illustrated with some examples.
