Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider general metric spaces and length spaces whose metrics may be nonreversible, and give Gromov pre-compactness theorems for such spaces with finite reversibility with respect to a generalized Gromov–Hausdorff distance. On the basis of these we derive pre-compactness theorems for general Finsler manifolds with finite reversibility.

Abstract:In a recent paper DʼAmbra et al. (2011) [2] we studied basic properties of partial immersions and partially free maps, a generalization of free maps introduced first by Gromov (1970) in [4]. In this short note we show how to build partially free maps out of partial immersions and use this fact to prove that the partially free maps in critical dimension introduced in Theorems 1.1–1.3 of DʼAmbra et al. (2011) [2] for three important types of distributions can actually be built out of partial immersions. Finally, we show that the canonical contact structure on R2n+1 admits partial immersions in critical dimension for every n.

Abstract:fundamental result in global analysis and nonlinear elasticity asserts that given a solution $\mathfrak{S}$ to the Gauss--Codazzi--Ricci equations over a simply-connected closed manifold $(\mathcal{M}^n,g)$, one may find an isometric immersion $\iota$ of $(\mathcal{M}^n,g)$ into the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$ whose extrinsic geometry coincides with $\mathfrak{S}$. Here the dimension $n$ and the codimension $k$ are arbitrary. Abundant literature has been devoted to relaxing the regularity assumptions on $\mathfrak{S}$ and $\iota$. The best result up to date is $\mathfrak{S} \in L^p$ and $\iota \in W^{2,p}$ for $p>n \geq 3$ or $p=n=2$. In this paper, we extend the above result to $\iota \in \mathcal{X}$ whose topology is strictly weaker than $W^{2,n}$ for $n \geq 3$. Indeed, $\mathcal{X}$ is the weak Morrey space $L^{p, n-p}_{2,w}$ with arbitrary $p \in ]2,n]$. This appears to be first supercritical result in the literature on the existence of isometric immersions with low regularity, given the solubility of the Gauss--Codazzi--Ricci equations. Our proof essentially utilises the theory of Uhlenbeck gauges -- in particular, Rivière--Struwe's work [Partial regularity for harmonic maps and related problems, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 61 (2008)] on harmonic maps in arbitrary dimensions and codimensions -- and compensated compactness.

Abstract:Klartag recently gave a beautiful alternative proof of the isoperimetric inequalities of Levy-Gromov, Bakry-Ledoux, Bayle and E. Milman on weighted Riemannian manifolds. Klartag's approach is based on a generalization of the localization method (so-called needle decompositions) in convex geometry, inspired also by optimal transport theory. Cavalletti and Mondino subsequently generalized the localization method, in a different way more directly along optimal transport theory, to essentially non-branching metric measure spaces satisfying the curvature-dimension condition. This class in particular includes reversible (absolutely homogeneous) Finsler manifolds. In this paper, we construct needle decompositions of non-reversible (only positively homogeneous) Finsler manifolds, and show an isoperimetric inequality under bounded reversibility constants. A discussion on the curvature-dimension condition CD$(K,N)$ for $N = 0$ is also included, it would be of independent interest.

Notes in the isometric deformations problem in codimension 2

Abstract:We present a discussion about the local isometric rigidity problem in codimension 2 with a concrete example. We show the necessity of extending the notions of genuine and honest rigidity in order to have the transitivity property. In order to do so, we show the necessity of studying the isometric immersions in semi-Euclidean spaces. We show that this extension comes with a natural type of singularity in the inner product.

Notes on the Cheeger and Colding version of the Reifenberg theorem for metric spaces

Abstract:The classical Reifenberg's theorem says that a set which is sufficiently well approximated by planes uniformly at all scales is a topological Hölder manifold. Remarkably, this generalizes to metric spaces, where the approximation by planes is replaced by the Gromov-Hausdorff distance. This fact was shown by Cheeger and Colding in an appendix of one of their celebrated works on Ricci limit spaces [8]. Given the recent interest around this statement in the growing field of analysis in metric spaces, in this note we provide a self contained and detailed proof of the Cheeger and Colding result. Our presentation substantially expands the arguments in [8] and makes explicit all the relevant estimates and constructions. As a byproduct we also shows a biLipschitz version of this result which, even if folklore among experts, was not present in the literature. This work is an extract from the doctoral dissertation of the second author.

Abstract:We study the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of metric pairs and metric tuples and prove the equivalence of different natural definitions of this concept. We also prove embedding, completeness and compactness theorems in this setting. Finally, we get a relative version of Fukaya's theorem about quotient spaces under Gromov--Hausdorff equivariant convergence and a version of Grove-Petersen--Wu's finiteness theorem for stratified spaces.

Sobolev Inequalities and Convergence For Riemannian Metrics and Distance Functions

Abstract:If one thinks of a Riemannian metric, $g_1$, analogously as the gradient of the corresponding distance function, $d_1$, with respect to a background Riemannian metric, $g_0$, then a natural question arises as to whether a corresponding theory of Sobolev inequalities exists between the Riemannian metric and its distance function. In this paper we study the sub-critical case $p < \frac{m}{2}$ and show a Sobolev inequality exists where an $L^{\frac{p}{2}}$ bound on a Riemannian metric implies an $L^q$ bound on its corresponding distance function. We then use this result to state a convergence theorem and show how this theorem can be useful to prove geometric stability results by proving a version of Gromov's conjecture for tori with almost non-negative scalar curvature in the conformal case. Examples are given to show that the hypotheses of the main theorems are necessary.

Untwisted Gromov-Witten invariants of Riemann-Finsler manifolds

Abstract:We define a $\mathbb{Q}$-valued deformation invariant of certain complete Riemann-Finsler manifolds, in particular of complete Riemannian manifolds with non positive sectional curvature. It is proved that every rational number is the value of this invariant for some compact Riemannian manifold. We use this to find the first and mostly sharp generalizations, to non-compact products and fibrations, of Preissman's theorem on non-existence of negative sectional curvature metrics on compact products. For example, $\Sigma \times T ^{n}$ admits a metric of negative sectional curvature, where $\Sigma$ is a non-compact possibly infinite type surface, if and only if $\Sigma$ has genus zero. We also give novel estimates on counts of closed geodesics with restrictions on multiplicity. Along the way, we also prove that sky catastrophes of smooth dynamical systems are not geodesible by a certain class of forward complete Riemann-Finsler metrics, in particular by complete Riemannian metrics with non-positive sectional curvature. This partially answers a question of Fuller and gives important examples for our theory here.

On the existence and prolongation of infinitesimal isometries on special sub-Riemannian manifolds

Abstract:In the present paper we deal with (local) infinitesimal isometries of special sub-Riemannian manifolds (a contact and oriented sub-Riemannian manifold is called special if the Reeb vector field is an isometry). The objective of the paper is to find some conditions on such manifolds which allow one to construct, locally around a given point, infinitesimal isometries and then, possibly, to prolong them onto bigger domains. The mentioned conditions are related to the so-called $\is^*$-regular and $\is$-regular points, the notions introduced by Nomizu in [22] in the Riemannian setting and slightly modified by the author.

Infinitesimal rigidity of convex surfaces through the second derivative of the Hilbert-Einstein functional II: Smooth case

Abstract:The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of smooth closed surfaces with everywhere positive Gauss curvature. We use a reformulation that replaces deformation of an embedding by deformation of the metric inside the body bounded by the surface. The proof is obtained by studying derivatives of the Hilbert-Einstein functional with boundary term. This approach is in a sense dual to proving the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity, that is rigidity with respect to the Gauss curvature parametrized by the Gauss map, by studying derivatives of the volume bounded by the surface. We recall that Blaschke's classical proof of the infinitesimal rigidity is also related to the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity, but in a different way: while Blaschke uses Gauss rigidity of the same surface, we use the Gauss rigidity of the polar dual. In the spherical and in the hyperbolic-de Sitter space, there is a perfect duality between the Hilbert-Einstein functional and the volume, as well as between both kinds of rigidity. We also indicate directions for future research, including the infinitesimal rigidity of convex cores of hyperbolic 3--manifolds.

Isometric Euclidean submanifolds with isometric Gauss maps

Abstract:We investigate isometric immersions $f\colon M^n\to\R^{n+2}$, $n\geq 3$, of Riemannian manifolds into Euclidean space with codimension two that admit isometric deformations that preserve the metric of the Gauss map. In precise terms, the preservation of the third fundamental form of the submanifold must be ensured throughout the deformation. For minimal isometric deformations of minimal submanifolds this is always the case. Our main result is of a local nature and states that if $f$ is neither minimal nor reducible, then it is a hypersurface of an isometrically deformable hypersurface $F\colon\tilde{M}^{n+1}\to\R^{n+2}$ such that the deformations of $F$ induce those of $f$. Moreover, for a particular class of such submanifolds, a complete local parametric description is provided.

Abstract:We prove that certain involutions defined by Vogell and Burghelea-Fiedorowicz on the rational algebraic K K -theory of spaces coincide. This gives a way to compute the positive and negative eigenspaces of the involution on rational homotopy groups of pseudoisotopy spaces from the involution on rational S 1 S^{1} -equivariant homology groups of the free loop space of a simply-connected manifold. As an application, we give explicit dimensions of the open manifolds V V that appear in Belegradek-Farrell-Kapovitch’s work for which the spaces of complete nonnegatively curved metrics on V V have nontrivial rational homotopy groups.
On immersions of surfaces into SL(2,C) and geometric consequences

Abstract:We approach the study of totally real immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant sectional curvature -1. We introduce a notion of first and second fundamental form, we prove that they satisfy a similar version of the classic Gauss-Codazzi equations, and conversely that solutions of Gauss-Codazzi equations are immersion data of some equivariant map. This study has some interesting geometric consequences: 1) it provides a formalism to study immersions of surfaces into SL(2,C) and into the space of geodesics of H^3; 2) it generalizes the classical theory of immersions into non-zero curvature space forms, leading to a model for the transitioning of hypersurfaces among H^n, AdS^n, dS^n and S^n; 3) we prove that a holomorphic family of immersion data corresponds to a holomorphic family of immersions, providing an effective way to construct holomorphic maps into the SO(n,C)-character variety. In particular we will point out a simpler proof of the holomorphicity of the complex landslide; 4) we see how, under certain hypothesis, complex metrics on a surface (i.e. complex bilinear forms of its complexified tangent bundle) of constant curvature -1 correspond to pairs of projective surfaces with the same holonomy. Applying Bers Double Uniformization Theorem to this construction we prove a Uniformization Theorem for complex metrics on a surface.

Global Weak Rigidity of the Gauss–Codazzi–Ricci Equations and Isometric Immersions of Riemannian Manifolds with Lower Regularity

Abstract:We are concerned with the global weak rigidity of the Gauss–Codazzi–Ricci (GCR) equations on Riemannian manifolds and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds into the Euclidean spaces. We develop a unified intrinsic approach to establish the global weak rigidity of both the GCR equations and isometric immersions of the Riemannian manifolds, independent of the local coordinates, and provide further insights of the previous local results and arguments. The critical case has also been analyzed. To achieve this, we first reformulate the GCR equations with div-curl structure intrinsically on Riemannian manifolds and develop a global, intrinsic version of the div-curl lemma and other nonlinear techniques to tackle the global weak rigidity on manifolds. In particular, a general functional-analytic compensated compactness theorem on Banach spaces has been established, which includes the intrinsic div-curl lemma on Riemannian manifolds as a special case. The equivalence of global isometric immersions, the Cartan formalism, and the GCR equations on the Riemannian manifolds with lower regularity is established. We also prove a new weak rigidity result along the way, pertaining to the Cartan formalism, for Riemannian manifolds with lower regularity, and extend the weak rigidity results for Riemannian manifolds with corresponding different metrics.

Abstract:In this paper we prove two results. The first shows that the Dirichlet-Neumann map of the operator $\Delta_g+q$ on a Riemannian surface can determine its topological, differential, and metric structure. Earlier work of this type assumes a priori that the surface is a planar domain [36] or that the geometry is a priori known [29]. We will then apply this result to study a geometric inverse problem for determining minimal surfaces embedded in $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. In particular we will show that knowledge of the volumes of embedded minimal surfaces determine not only their topological and differential structure but also their Riemannian structure as an embedded hypersurface. Such geometric inverse problems are partially inspired by the physical models proposed by the AdS/CFT correspondence. The crucial ingredient in removing the planar domain assumption is the determination of the boundary trace of holomorphic functions from knowledge of the Dirichlet-Neumann map of $\Delta_g +q$. This requires a new type of argument involving Carleman estimates and construction of CGO whose phase functions are not Morse as in the case of [29]. We anticipate that these techniques could be of use for studying other inverse problems in geometry and PDE.

Extensions of Schoen--Simon--Yau and Schoen--Simon theorems via iteration à la De Giorgi

Abstract:We give an alternative proof of the Schoen--Simon--Yau curvature estimates and associated Bernstein-type theorems (1975), and extend the original result by including the case of $6$-dimensional (stable minimal) immersions. The key step is an $\epsilon$-regularity theorem, that assumes smallness of the scale-invariant $L^2$ norm of the second fundamental form. Further, we obtain a graph description, in the Lipschitz multi-valued sense, for any stable minimal immersion of dimension $n\geq 2$, that may have a singular set $\Sigma$ of locally finite $\mathcal{H}^{n-2}$-measure, and that is weakly close to a hyperplane. (In fact, if $\mathcal{H}^{n-2}(\Sigma)=0$, the conclusion is strengthened to a union of smooth graphs.) This follows directly from an $\epsilon$-regularity theorem, that assumes smallness of the scale-invariant $L^2$ tilt-excess (verified when the hypersurface is weakly close to a hyperplane). A further direct consequence is that (for an immersed hypersurface of the type considered) any tangent cone supported on a hyperplane is the unique tangent. Specialising the multi-valued decomposition to the case of embeddings, we recover the Schoen--Simon theorem (1981). In both $\epsilon$-regularity theorems the relevant quantity (respectively, length of the second fundamental form and tilt function) solves a non-linear PDE on the immersed minimal hypersurface. The proof is carried out intrinsically (without linearising the PDE) by implementing an iteration method à la De Giorgi (from the linear De Giorgi--Nash--Moser theory). Stability implies estimates (intrinsic weak Caccioppoli inequalities) that make the iteration effective despite the non-linear framework. (In both $\epsilon$-regularity theorems the method gives explicit constants that quantify the required smallness.)

Abstract:We propose results that relate the following two contexts: Given a Riemann metric G on $\Omega ^1=\omega \times (-\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2})$, we find the infimum of the averaged pointwise deficit of an immersion from attaining the orientation-preserving isometric immersion of $G_{\mid \Omega ^h}$ on $\Omega ^h=\omega \times (-\frac{h}{2}, \frac{h}{2})$, over all weakly regular immersions. This deficit is measured by the non-Euclidean energies ${\mathcal {E}}^h$, which can be seen as modifications of the classical nonlinear three-dimensional elasticity.
