Abstract:The Onsager reaction-field (ORF) theory is extended so that it applies to any three-dimensional Bravais lattice with a basis. The ORF calculation is used to predict the critical temperature for classical Ising, XY, and Heisenberg magnetic models, in particular, on diamond and hexagonal close packed lattices. Results are compared with series extrapolations and other theoretical approaches where available. For the hcp lattice the ORF calculation is seen to be exactly equivalent to a Green's function approach.

Abstract:We study ferromagnetic Ising models on finite graphs with an inhomogeneous external field, where a subset of vertices is designated as the boundary. We show that the influence of boundary conditions on any given spin is maximised when the external field is identically 0. One corollary is that spin-spin correlations are maximised when the external field vanishes and the boundary condition is free, which proves a conjecture of Shlosman. In particular, the random field Ising model on Z(d), d >= 3, exhibits exponential decay of correlations in the entire high temperature regime of the pure Ising model. Another corollary is that the pure Ising model in d >= 3 satisfies the conjectured strong spatial mixing property in the entire high temperature regime.

Abstract:We consider the $s=1/2$ transverse field $XY$ model on the frustrated diamond chain, considering anisotropic exchange parameters between nearest-neighbor spins. To this end, we employ three different methodologies: mean-field approximations, and state-of-the-art exact diagonalizations (ED), and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. Within a mean-field theory, the Hamiltonian is fermionized by introducing the Jordan-Wigner transformation, and the interacting (many-body) terms are approximated to single-particle ones by a Hartree-Fock approach. We analyze the behavior of the induced and spontaneous magnetization as functions of the external field, investigating the magnetic properties at the ground state, and at finite temperatures. Interestingly, the mean-field results are in reasonable agreement with the ED and DMRG ones, in particular for the distorted chain, or at an intermediate/large spin anisotropy parameter. As our key results, we present phase diagrams anisotropy $\times$ magnetic field at zero temperature, discussing the emergence of phases and their quantum critical points. Finally, our analysis at finite temperature provides a range of parameters in which an unusual behavior of the induced magnetization occurs -- with it increasing as a function of temperature. This work presents a \textit{global} picture of the XY model on the diamond chain, which may be useful to understand features of magnetism in more complex geometries.

Abstract:Significance The subject of cluster algebras was born out of the study of concrete mathematical questions such as “how can we detect when a matrix will have all eigenvalues positive?” Recently it has turned out that cluster algebras show up in all kinds of unexpected places, even in the physicists’ playground of quantum field theory. This paper is a review of one way in which quantum field theory and cluster algebras interact. In particular, the paper argues that geometric ideas coming from quantum field theory lead to a natural extension of the theory of cluster algebras.

Conjectures on Hidden Onsager Algebra Symmetries in Interacting Quantum Lattice Models

Abstract:We conjecture the existence of hidden Onsager algebra symmetries in two interacting quantum integrable lattice models, i.e. spin-1/2 XXZ model and spin-1 Zamolodchikov-Fateev model at arbitrary root of unity values of the anisotropy. The conjectures relate the Onsager generators to the conserved charges obtained from semi-cyclic transfer matrices. The conjectures are motivated by two examples which are spin-1/2 XX model and spin-1 U(1)-invariant clock model. A novel construction of the semi-cyclic transfer matrices of spin-1 Zamolodchikov-Fateev model at arbitrary root of unity value of the anisotropy is carried out via transfer matrix fusion procedure.

Ising-XY Transition in Three-dimensional Frustrated Antiferromagnets with Collinear Ordering

Abstract:Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the critical behavior of two models of frustrated XY antiferromagnets with a collinear spin ordering and with an additional twofold degeneracy of the ground state. We consider a classic antiferromagnet on a body-centered cubic lattice with an additional antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between next-nearest spins, and a ferromagnet with an extra antiferromagnetic intralayer exchange. In both models, a single first-order transition on the discrete and continuous order parameters is found. Observed critical pseudo-exponents are in agreement with exponents of XY magnets with a planar spin ordering like a stacked-triangular antiferromagnet and helimagnets belonging to the same symmetry class.

Low energy spectrum of the XXZ model coupled to a magnetic field

Abstract:It is shown that, for a class of Hamiltonians of XXZ chains in an external magnetic field that are small perturbations of an Ising Hamiltonian, the spectral gap above the ground-state energy remains strictly positive when the perturbation is turned on, uniformly in the length of the chain. The result is proven for both the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic Ising Hamiltonian; in the latter case the external magnetic field is required to be small, and for an even number of sites the two-fold degenerate ground-state energy of the unperturbed Hamiltonian may split into two energy levels whose difference is small. This result is proven by using a new, quite subtle refinement of a method developed in earlier work and used to iteratively block-diagonalize Hamiltonians of ever larger subsystems with the help of local unitary conjugations. One novel ingredient of the method presented in this paper consists of the use of Lieb-Robinson bounds.

Kondo spectral functions at low-temperatures: A dynamical-exchange-correlation-field perspective

Abstract:We calculate the low-temperature spectral function of the symmetric single impurity Anderson model using a recently proposed dynamical exchange-correlation (xc) field formalism. The xc field, coupled to the one-particle Green's function, is obtained through analytic analysis and numerical extrapolation based on finite clusters. In the Kondo regime, the xc field is modeled by an ansatz that takes into account the different asymptotic behaviors in the small- and large-time regimes. The small-time xc field contributes to the Hubbard side-band, whereas the large-time to the Kondo resonance. We illustrate these features in terms of analytical and numerical calculations for small- and medium-size finite clusters, and in the thermodynamic limit. The results indicate that the xc field formalism provides a good trade-off between accuracy and complexity in solving impurity problems. Consequently, it can significantly reduce the complexity of the many-body problem faced by first-principles approaches to strongly correlated materials.

Abstract:For a class of quasi-one-dimensional clusters, by using exact diagonalization, we study the effect of side spins on the spin-spin correlations on the chain. Our calculations show that side spins added in the same sublattice can effectively strengthen the spin-spin correlations in the large-distance region and make the change tend to flatten. It is exactly proved that periodically adding side spins can set up magnetic long-range order in the ground state. We also investigate the effect of the density of side spins on correlation strength. The case where two sublattices have different localized spins is discussed.

Abstract:This paper is a continuation of [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 55, 405203 (2022)], in which a set of matrix elements of local operators was computed for the XXZ spin-1/2 open chain with a particular case of unparallel boundary fields. Here, we extend these results to the more general case in which both fields are non-longitudinal and related by one constraint, allowing for a partial description of the spectrum by usual Bethe equations. More precisely, the complete spectrum and eigenstates can be characterized within the Separation of Variables (SoV) framework. One uses here the fact that, under the constraint, a part of this SoV spectrum can be described via solutions of a usual, homogeneous, TQ-equation, with corresponding transfer matrix eigenstates coinciding with generalized Bethe states. We explain how to generically compute the action of a basis of local operators on such kind of states, and this under the most general boundary condition on the last site of the chain. As a result, we can compute the matrix elements of some of these basis elements in any eigenstate described by the homogenous TQ-equation. Assuming, following a conjecture of Nepomechie and Ravanini, that the ground state itself can be described in this framework, we obtain multiple integral representations for these matrix elements in the half-infinite chain limit, generalizing those previously obtained in the case of longitudinal boundary fields and in the case of the special boundary conditions considered in [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 55, 405203 (2022)].

Spin cones in random-field XY models

Abstract:We determine the arrangement of spins in the ground state of the XY model with quenched, random fields, on a fully connected graph. Two types of disordered fields are considered, namely randomly oriented magnetic fields, and randomly oriented crystal fields. Orientations are chosen from a uniformly isotropic distribution, but disorder fluctuations in each realization of a finite system lead to a breaking of rotational symmetry. The result is an interesting pattern of spin orientations, found by solving a system of coupled, nonlinear equations within perturbation theory and also by exact numerical continuation. All spins lie within a cone for small enough ratio of field to coupling strength, with an interesting distribution of spin orientations, with peaks at the cone edges. The orientation of the cone depends strongly on the realization of disorder, but the opening angle does not. In the case of random magnetic fields, the cone angle widens as the ratio increases till a critical value at which there is a first order phase transition and the cone disappears. With random crystal fields, there is no phase transition and the cone angle approaches $180^\circ$ for large values of the ratio. At finite low temperatures, Monte-Carlo simulations show that the formation of a cone and its subsequent alignment along the equilibrium direction occur on two different time scales.

Abstract:In the Ising and Potts model, random cluster representations provide a geometric interpretation to spin correlations. We discuss similar constructions for the Villain and XY models, where spins take values in the circle, as well as extensions to models with different single site spin spaces. In the Villain case, we highlight natural interpretation in terms of the cable system extension of the model. We also list questions and open problems on the cluster representations obtained in this fashion.

On correlation functions in models related to the Temperley-Lieb algebra

Abstract:We deal with quantum spin chains whose Hamiltonian arises from a representation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra, and we consider the mean values of those local operators which are generated by the Temperley-Lieb algebra. We present two key conjectures which relate these mean values to existing literature about factorized correlation functions in the XXZ spin chain. The first conjecture states that the finite volume mean values of the current and generalized current operators are given by the same simple formulas as in the case of the XXZ chain. The second conjecture states that the mean values of products of Temperley-Lieb generators can be factorized: they can expressed as sums of products of current mean values, such that the coefficients in the factorization depend neither on the eigenstate in question, nor on the selected representation of the algebra. The coefficients can be extracted from existing work on factorized correlation functions in the XXZ model. The conjectures should hold for all eigenstates that are non-degenerate with respect to the local charges of the models. We consider concrete representations, where we check the conjectures: the so-called golden chain, the $Q$-state Potts model, and the trace representation. We also explain how to derive the generalized current operators from concrete expressions for the local charges.

Abstract:The one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ model in a transverse magnetic field is studied. It is shown that the field induces a gap in the spectrum of the model with the easy-plane anisotropy. Using conformal invariance, the field dependence of the gap is found at small fields. The ground state phase diagram is obtained. It contains four phases with the long-range order of different types and a disordered phase. These phases are separated by critical lines, where the gap and the long-range order vanish. Using scaling estimates, the mean-field approach, and numerical calculations in the vicinity of all critical lines, we find the critical exponents of the gap and the long-range order. It is shown that the transition line between the ordered and disordered phases belongs to the universality class of the transverse Ising model.

Quantum phases of spin-1/2 extended XY model in transverse magnetic field

Abstract:In this study, a spin-1/2 extended anisotropic XY chain has been introduced in which both time reversal and SU(2) symmetries are broken but $Z_2$ symmetry is preserved. Magnetic and topological phase diagrams in the parameter space have been drawn in the presence of transverse magnetic field. Entanglement measures like mutual information and quantum discord are also evaluated and it indicates that these transitions are second order in nature. Quantum phase transition is noted at zero magnetic field, as well as magnetic long range order is found to withstand magnetic field of any strength. Exact analytic results for spin-spin correlation functions have been obtained in terms of Jordan Wigner fermionization. Existence of long range magnetic order has been investigated numerically by finding correlation functions as well as the Binder cumulant in the ground state. Dispersion relation, ground state energy, and energy gap are obtained analytically. In order to find the topologically nontrivial phase, sign of Pfaffian invariant and value of winding number have been evaluated. Both magnetic and topological phases are robust against the magnetic field and found to move coercively in the parameter space with the variation of its strength. Long range orders along two orthogonal directions and two different topological phases are found and their one-to-one correspondence has been found. Finally casting the spinless fermions onto Majorana fermions, properties of zero energy edge states are studied. Three different kinds of Majorana pairings are noted. In the trivial phase, next-nearest-neighbor Majorana pairing is found, whereas two different types of nearest-neighbor Majorana pairings are identified in the topological superconducting phase.

Permutation invariance, partition algebras and large $N$ matrix models

Abstract:In this thesis we will study matrix models with discrete gauge group $S_N$. We will put these matrix models into a generalized Schur-Weyl duality framework where dual algebras, known as partition algebras, emerge. These form generalizations of the symmetric group algebras -- they are semi-simple finite-dimensional associative algebras with a basis labelled by diagrams. We review the structure and representation theory of partition algebras. These algebras are then used to compute expectation values of $S_N$ invariant observables. This is a step towards studying the emergence of new geometric structures in their Feynman diagram expansion. Matrix models also appear in the form of quantum mechanical models of matrix oscillators. We explore the implications of the Schur-Weyl duality framework to matrix quantum mechanics with permutation symmetry.

Abstract:We present a Quantum Monte Carlo study of the Ising model in a transverse field on a square lattice with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interaction J and one diagonal second-neighbor interaction $J'$, interpolating between square-lattice ($J'=0$) and triangular-lattice ($J'=J$) limits. At a transverse-field of $B_x=J$, the disorder-line first introduced by Stephenson, where the correlations go from Neel to incommensurate, meets the zero temperature axis at $J'\approx 0.7 J$. Strong evidence is provided that the incommensurate phase at larger $J'$, at finite temperatures, is a floating phase with power-law decaying correlations. We sketch a general phase-diagram for such a system and discuss how our work connects with the previous Quantum Monte Carlo work by Isakov and Moessner for the isotropic triangular lattice ($J'=J$). For the isotropic triangular-lattice, we also obtain the entropy function and constant entropy contours using a mix of Quantum Monte Carlo, high-temperature series expansions and high-field expansion methods and show that phase transitions in the model in presence of a transverse field occur at very low entropy.

Onsager symmetries in $U(1)$-invariant clock models

Abstract:We show how the Onsager algebra, used in the original solution of the two-dimensional Ising model, arises as an infinite-dimensional symmetry of certain self-dual models that also have a $U(1)$ symmetry. We describe in detail the example of nearest-neighbour $n$-state clock chains whose ${\mathbb Z}_n$ symmetry is enhanced to $U(1)$. As a consequence of the Onsager-algebra symmetry, the spectrum of these models possesses degeneracies with multiplicities $2^N$ for positive integer $N$. We construct the elements of the algebra explicitly from transfer matrices built from non-fundamental representations of the quantum-group algebra $U_q(sl_2)$. We analyse the spectra further by using both the coordinate Bethe ansatz and a functional approach, and show that the degeneracies result from special exact $n$-string solutions of the Bethe equations. We also find a family of commuting chiral Hamiltonians that break the degeneracies and allow an integrable interpolation between ferro- and antiferromagnets.
