Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple and simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic $p>0$. We establish an isomorphism of $G$-modules between a direct sum of modules $\text{St} \otimes \text{St}$ and a direct sum of tensor products of simple modules of restricted highest weight with tilting modules that are projective over the Frobenius kernel of $G$. This isomorphism holds precisely when Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture does, and thus can be seen as providing a $G$-module theoretic characterization of this conjecture.

Iterative character constructions for algebra groups

Abstract:We construct a family of orthogonal characters of an algebra group which decompose the supercharacters defined by Diaconis and Isaacs. Like supercharacters, these characters are given by nonnegative integer linear combinations of Kirillov functions and are induced from linear supercharacters of certain algebra subgroups. We derive a formula for these characters and give a condition for their irreducibility; generalizing a theorem of Otto, we also show that each such character has the same number of Kirillov functions and irreducible characters as constituents. In proving these results, we observe as an application how a recent computation by Evseev implies that every irreducible character of the unitriangular group $\UT_n(q)$ of unipotent $n\times n$ upper triangular matrices over a finite field with $q$ elements is a Kirillov function if and only if $n\leq 12$. As a further application, we discuss some more general conditions showing that Kirillov functions are characters, and describe some results related to counting the irreducible constituents of supercharacters.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a complex semisimple Lie algebra. We give a description of characters of irreducible Whittaker modules for $\mathfrak{g}$ with any infinitesimal character, along with a Kazhdan-Lusztig algorithm for computing them. This generalizes Milicic-Soergel's and Romanov's results for integral infinitesimal characters. As a special case, we recover the non-integral Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture for Verma modules.

Abstract:In this note, we determine the irreducible characters for the simple algebraic groups of type $A_5$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic 3, by using a theorem of Xi Nanhua and the Matlab software. In order to obtain higher speed than in Jiachen et al we modify the algorithm to compute the irreducible characters.

Abstract:We describe three algorithms to determine the stable, semistable, and torus-polystable loci of the GIT quotient of a projective variety by a reductive group. The algorithms are efficient when the group is semisimple. By using an implementation of our algorithms for simple groups, we provide several applications to the moduli theory of algebraic varieties, including the K-moduli of algebraic varieties, the moduli of algebraic curves and the Mukai models of the moduli space of curves for low genus. We also discuss a number of potential improvements and some natural open problems arising from this work.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal O_p$ denote the characteristic $p>0$ version of the ordinary category $\mathcal O$ for a semisimple complex Lie algebra. In this paper we give some (formal) character formulas in $\mathcal O_p$. First we concentrate on the irreducible characters. Here we give explicit formulas for how to obtain all irreducible characters from the characters of the finitely many restricted simple modules as well as the characters of a small number of infinite dimensional simple modules in $\mathcal O_p$ with specified highest weights. We next prove a strong linkage principle for Verma modules which allow us to split $\mathcal O_p$ into a finite direct sum of linkage classes. There are corresponding translation functors and we use these to further cut down the set of irreducible characters needed for determining all others. Then we show that the twisting functors on $\mathcal O$ carry over to twisting functors on $\mathcal O_p$, and as an application we prove a character sum formula for Jantzen-type filtrations of Verma modules with antidominant highest weights. Finally, we record formulas relating the characters of the two kinds of tilting modules in $\mathcal O_p$.
Character sheaves on neutrally solvable groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathtt{k}$ of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper we develop the theory of character sheaves on groups $G$ such that their neutral connected components $G^\circ$ are solvable algebraic groups. For such algebraic groups $G$ (which we call neutrally solvable) we will define the set $\operatorname{CS}(G)$ of character sheaves on $G$ as certain special (isomorphism classes of) objects in the category $\mathscr{D}_G(G)$ of $G$-equivariant $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$-complexes (where we fix a prime $\ell\neq p$) on $G$. We will describe a partition of the set $\operatorname{CS}(G)$ into finite sets known as $\mathbb{L}$-packets and we will associate a modular category $\mathscr{M}_L$ with each $\mathbb{L}$-packet $L$ of character sheaves using a truncated version of convolution of character sheaves. In the case where $\mathtt{k}=\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$ and $G$ is equipped with an $\mathbb{F}_q$-Frobenius $F$ we will study the relationship between $F$-stable character sheaves on $G$ and the irreducible characters of (all pure inner forms of) $G^F$. In particular, we will prove that the notion of almost characters (introduced by T. Shoji using Shintani descent) is well defined for neutrally solvable groups and that these almost characters coincide with the "trace of Frobenius" functions associated with $F$-stable character sheaves. We will also prove that the matrix relating the irreducible characters and almost characters is block diagonal where the blocks on the diagonal are parametrized by $F$-stable $\mathbb{L}$-packets. Moreover, we will prove that the block in this transition matrix corresponding to any $F$-stable $\mathbb{L}$-packet $L$ can be described as the crossed S-matrix associated with the auto-equivalence of the modular category $\mathscr{M}_L$ induced by $F$.

On Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture III: New Generic Lower Bounds

Abstract:In this paper the authors consider four questions of primary interest for the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups: (i) Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture, (ii) the Humphreys-Verma Question, (iii) whether $\operatorname{St}_r \otimes L(\lambda)$ is a tilting module for $L(\lambda)$ an irrreducible representation of $p^{r}$-restricted highest weight, and (iv) whether $\operatorname{Ext}^{1}_{G_{1}}(L(\lambda),L(\mu))^{(-1)}$ is a tilting module where $L(\lambda)$ and $L(\mu)$ have $p$-restricted highest weight. The authors establish affirmative answers to each of these questions with a new uniform bound, namely $p\geq 2h-4$ where $h$ is the Coxeter number. Notably, this verifies these statements for infinitely many more cases. Later in the paper, questions (i)-(iv) are considered for rank two groups where there are counterexamples (for small primes) to these questions.

Subregular nilpotent orbits and explicit character formulas for modules over affine Lie algebras

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simple finite dimensional complex Lie algebra and let $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$ be the corresponding affine Lie algebra. Kac and Wakimoto observed that in some cases the coefficients in the character formula for a simple highest weight $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-module are either bounded or are given by a linear function of the weight. We explain and generalize this observation using Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, by computing values at $q=1$ of certain (parabolic) affine inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In particular, we obtain explicit character formulas for some $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-modules of negative integer level $k$ when $\mathfrak g$ is of type $D_n$, $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$ and $k \geqslant -2, -3, -4, -6$ respectively, as conjectured by Kac and Wakimoto. The calculation relies on the explicit description of the canonical basis in the cell quotient of the anti-spherical module over the affine Hecke algebra corresponding to the subregular cell. We also present an explicit description of the corresponding objects in the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution, they correspond to irreducible objects in the heart of a certain $t$-structure related to the so called non-commutative Springer resolution.

Characteristic tilting modules over this class of quasi-hereditary algebras are constructed. Their endomorphism algebras are explicitly described. Abstract:We associate to outer automorphisms of generalized Kac-Moody algebras generalized character-valued indices, the twining characters. A character formula for twining characters is derived which shows that they coincide with the ordinary characters of some other generalized Kac-Moody algebra, the so-called orbit Lie algebra. Some applications to problems in conformal field theory, algebraic geometry and the theory of sporadic simple groups are sketched.

Abstract:This article discusses the twisted adjoint action $\mathrm{Ad}_{g}^{\kappa}:G\rightarrow G$, $x\mapsto gx\kappa(g^{-1})$ given by a Dynkin diagram automorphism $\kappa\in\mathrm{Aut}(G)$, where $G$ is compact, connected, simply connected and simple. The first aim is to recover the classification of $\kappa$-twisted conjugacy classes by elementary means, without invoking the non-connected group $G\rtimes\langle\kappa\rangle$. The second objective is to highlight several properties of the so-called \textit{twining characters} $\tilde{\chi}^{(\kappa)}:G\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$, as defined by Fuchs, Schellekens and Schweigert. These class functions generalize the usual characters, and define $\kappa$-twisted versions $\tilde{R}^{(\kappa)}(G)$ and $\tilde{R}_{k}^{(\kappa)}(G)$ ($k\in\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$) of the representation and fusion rings associated to $G$. In particular, the latter are shown to be isomorphic to the representation and fusion rings of the \textit{orbit Lie group} $G_{(\kappa)}$, a simply connected group obtained from $\kappa$ and the root data of $G$.

Abstract:In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the characters of a finite Coxeter group $W$ afforded by the homogeneous components of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture also relates the Orlik-Solomon characters above to the terms of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to the descent algebra of $W$. A consequence of our conjecture is that both the regular character of $W$ and the character of the Orlik-Solomon algebra have parallel, graded decompositions as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. The refined conjecture has been proved for symmetric and dihedral groups. In this paper we develop algorithmic tools to prove the conjecture computationally for a given finite Coxeter group. We use these tools to verify the conjecture for all finite Coxeter groups of rank three and four, thus providing previously unknown decompositions of the regular characters and the Orlik-Solomon characters of these groups.

Abstract:We develop practical techniques to compute with arithmetic groups $H\leq \mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Q})$ for $n>2$. Our approach relies on constructing a principal congruence subgroup in $H$. Problems solved include testing membership in $H$, analyzing the subnormal structure of $H$, and the orbit-stabilizer problem for $H$. Effective computation with subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{Z}_m)$ is vital to this work. All algorithms have been implemented in GAP.

Abstract:We discuss various computational issues around the problem of determining the character values of finite Chevalley groups, in the framework provided by Lusztig's theory of character sheaves. Some of the remaining open questions (concerning certain roots of unity) for the cuspidal unipotent character sheaves of groups of exceptional type are resolved.

Closed Form of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Formula for the Generators of Semisimple Complex Lie Algebras

Abstract:Recently it has been introduced an algorithm Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula, which extends the Van-Brunt and Visser recent results, leading to new closed forms of BCH formula. More recently, it has been shown that there are {\it 13 types} of such commutator algebras. We show, by providing the explicit solutions, that these include the generators of the semisimple complex Lie algebras. More precisely, for any pair, $X$, $Y$ of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y)=\exp(W) $$ The derivation of such closed forms follows, in part, by using the above mentioned recent results. The complete derivation is provided by considering the structure of of the root system. Furthermore, if $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ are three generators of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find, for a wide class of cases, $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$ and $Z$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y) \exp(Z)=\exp(W) $$ It turns out that the relevant commutator algebras are {\it type 1c-i}, {\it type 4} and {\it type 5}. A key result concerns an iterative application of the algorithm leading to relevant extensions of the cases admitting closed forms of the BCH formula. Here we provide the main steps of such an iteration that will be developed in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a more down-to-earth introduction to the connection between Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over and diagrammatic KLRW algebras and develop some of its consequences. In addition to a new proof of this description of the category Gelfand-Tsetlin modules appearing in earlier work, we show three new results of independent interest: (1) we show that every simple Gelfand-Tsetlin module is a canonical module in the sense of Early, Mazorchuk and Vishnyakova, and characterize when two maximal ideals have isomorphic canonical modules, (2) we show that the dimensions of Gelfand-Tsetlin weight spaces in simple modules can be computed using an appropriate modification of Leclerc's algorithm for computing dual canonical bases, and (3) we construct a basis of the Verma modules of which consists of generalized eigenvectors for the Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra. Furthermore, we present computations of multiplicities and Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions for all integral Gelfand-Tsetlin modules in ranks 3 and 4; unfortunately, for ranks , our computers are not adequate to perform these computations.

Abstract:We present a new algorithm to decide finiteness of matrix groups defined over a field of positive characteristic. Together with previous work for groups in zero characteristic, this provides the first complete solution of the finiteness problem for finitely generated matrix groups over an arbitrary field. We also give an algorithm to compute the order of a finite matrix group over a function field of positive characteristic. Our MAGMA implementations of these algorithms are publicly available.
