Abstract:By extending the definition of boxicity, we extend a Helly-type result given by Danzer and Grumbaum on 2-piercings of family of boxes in $d$-dimensional Euclidian space by lowering the dimension of the boxes in the ambient space.

Abstract:We prove extensions of Halman's discrete Helly theorem for axis-parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Halman's theorem says that, given a set $S$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, if $F$ is a finite family of axis-parallel boxes such that the intersection of any $2d$ contains a point of $S$, then the intersection of $F$ contains a point of $S$. We prove colorful, fractional, and quantitative versions of Halman's theorem. For the fractional versions, it is enough to check that many $(d+1)$-tuples of the family contain points of $S$. Among the colorful versions we include variants where the coloring condition is replaced by an arbitrary matroid. Our results generalize beyond axis-parallel boxes to $H$-convex sets.

On the coincidence of the Hausdorff and box dimensions for some affine-invariant sets

Abstract:Let $ K $ be a compact subset of the $d$-torus invariant under an expanding diagonal endomorphism with $ s $ distinct eigenvalues. Suppose the symbolic coding of $K$ satisfies weak specification. When $ s \leq 2 $, we prove that the following three statements are equivalent: (A) the Hausdorff and box dimensions of $ K $ coincide; (B) with respect to some gauge function, the Hausdorff measure of $ K $ is positive and finite; (C) the Hausdorff dimension of the measure of maximal entropy on $ K $ attains the Hausdorff dimension of $ K $. When $ s \geq 3 $, we find some examples in which (A) does not hold but (C) holds, which is a new phenomenon not appearing in the planar cases. Through a different probabilistic approach, we establish the equivalence of (A) and (B) for Bedford-McMullen sponges.

Intersection Properties of Finite Disk Collections

Abstract:In this article, we study the intersection of a finite collection of disks in Euclidean space by examining spheres of various dimensions and their poles (extreme values with respect to canonical projections) contained within the intersection's boundary. We derive explicit formulae for computing these extreme values and present two applications. The first application involves computing the smallest common rescaling factor for the radii of the disk system, which brings the system to a single point of intersection. This calculation allows us to compute the generalized Čech filtration, a crucial tool for the topological data analysis of weighted point clouds. The second application focuses on determining the minimal Axis-Aligned Bounding Box (AABB) for the intersection of a finite collection of disks in Euclidean space, addressing a significant problem in computational geometry. We consider that this work aims to contribute to the fields of topological data analysis and computational geometry by providing new tools for analyzing complex geometric structures.

Abstract:Consider the $d$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{M}_K^d$ of constant curvature $K<0$ and fix a point $o$ playing the role of an origin. Let $\mathbf{L}$ be a uniform random $q$-dimensional totally geodesic submanifold (called $q$-flat) in $\mathbb{M}_K^d$ passing through $o$ and, independently of $\mathbf{L}$, let $\mathbf{E}$ be a random $(d-q+\gamma)$-flat in $\mathbb{M}_K^d$ which is uniformly distributed in the set of all $(d-q+\gamma)$-flats intersecting a hyperbolic ball of radius $u>0$ around $o$. We are interested in the distribution of the random $\gamma$-flat arising as the intersection of $\mathbf{E}$ with $\mathbf{L}$. In contrast to the Euclidean case, the intersection $\mathbf{E}\cap \mathbf{L}$ can be empty with strictly positive probability. We determine this probability and the full distribution of $\mathbf{E}\cap \mathbf{L}$. Thereby, we elucidate crucial differences to the Euclidean case. Moreover, we study the limiting behaviour as $d\uparrow\infty$ and also $K\uparrow 0$. Thereby we obtain a phase transition with three different phases which we completely characterize, including a critical phase with distinctive behavior and a phase recovering the Euclidean results. In the background are methods from hyperbolic integral geometry.

Abstract:M. Goresky and R. MacPherson intersection homology is also defined from the singular chain complex of a filtered space by H. King, with a key formula to make selections among singular simplexes. This formula needs a notion of dimension for subspaces S of an Euclidean simplex, which is usually taken as the smallest dimension of the skeleta containing S . Later, P. Gajer employed another dimension based on the dimension of polyhedra containing S . This last one allows traces of pullbacks of singular strata in the interior of the domain of a singular simplex. In this work, we prove that the two corresponding intersection homologies are isomorphic for Siebenmann's CS sets. In terms of King's paper, this means that polyhedral dimension is a "reasonable" dimension. The proof uses a Mayer-Vietoris argument which needs an adapted subdivision. With the polyhedral dimension, that is a subtle issue. General position arguments are not sufficient and we introduce strong general position. With it, a stability is added to the generic character and we can do an inductive cutting of each singular simplex. This decomposition is realised with pseudo-barycentric subdivisions where the new vertices are not barycentres but close points of them.

Abstract:This paper extends some results of [M5] and [M3], in particular, removing assumptions of positive lower density. We give conditions on a general family $P_{\lambda}:\mathbb{R}^{n}\to\mathbb{R}^{m}, \lambda \in \Lambda,$ of orthogonal projections which guarantee that the Hausdorff dimension formula $\dim A\cap P_{\lambda}^{-1}\{u\}=s-m$ holds generically for measurable sets $A\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with positive and finite $s$-dimensional Hausdorff measure, $s>m$. As an application we prove for measurable sets $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with positive $s$- and $t$-dimensional measures that if $s + (n-1)t/n > n$, then $\dim A\cap (g(B)+z) \geq s+t - n$ for almost all rotations $g$ and for positively many $z\in\mathbb{R}^{n}$. We shall also give an application on the estimates of the dimension of the set of exceptional rotations.

On Zarankiewicz's Problem for Intersection Hypergraphs of Geometric Objects

Abstract:The hypergraph Zarankiewicz's problem, introduced by Erdős in 1964, asks for the maximum number of hyperedges in an $r$-partite hypergraph with $n$ vertices in each part that does not contain a copy of $K_{t,t,\ldots,t}$. Erdős obtained a near optimal bound of $O(n^{r-1/t^{r-1}})$ for general hypergraphs. In recent years, several works obtained improved bounds under various algebraic assumptions -- e.g., if the hypergraph is semialgebraic. In this paper we study the problem in a geometric setting -- for $r$-partite intersection hypergraphs of families of geometric objects. Our main results are essentially sharp bounds for families of axis-parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and families of pseudo-discs. For axis-parallel boxes, we obtain the sharp bound $O_{d,t}(n^{r-1}(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n})^{d-1})$. The best previous bound was larger by a factor of about $(\log n)^{d(2^{r-1}-2)}$. For pseudo-discs, we obtain the bound $O_t(n^{r-1}(\log n)^{r-2})$, which is sharp up to logarithmic factors. As this hypergraph has no algebraic structure, no improvement of Erdős' 60-year-old $O(n^{r-1/t^{r-1}})$ bound was known for this setting. Futhermore, even in the special case of discs for which the semialgebraic structure can be used, our result improves the best known result by a factor of $\tilde{\Omega}(n^{\frac{2r-2}{3r-2}})$. To obtain our results, we use the recently improved results for the graph Zarankiewicz's problem in the corresponding settings, along with a variety of combinatorial and geometric techniques, including shallow cuttings, biclique covers, transversals, and planarity.

Abstract:We obtain box-counting estimates for the pinned distance sets of (dense subsets of) planar discrete Ahlfors-regular sets of exponent $s>1$. As a corollary, we improve upon a recent result of Orponen, by showing that if $A$ is Ahlfors-regular of dimension $s>1$, then almost all pinned distance sets of $A$ have lower box-counting dimension $1$. We also show that if $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ have Hausdorff dimension $>1$ and $A$ is Ahlfors-regular, then the set of distances between $A$ and $B$ has modified lower box-counting dimension $1$, which taking $B=A$ improves Orponen's result in a different direction, by lowering packing dimension to modified lower box-counting dimension. The proofs involve ergodic-theoretic ideas, relying on the theory of CP-processes and projections.

On the Hausdorff dimension of the residual set of a packing by smooth curves

Abstract:Let a planar residual set be a set obtained by removing countably many disjoint topological disks from an open set in the plane. We prove that the residual set of a planar packing by curves that satisfy a certain lower curvature bound has Hausdorff dimension bounded away from 1, quantitatively, depending only on the curvature bound. As a corollary, the residual set of any circle packing has Hausdorff dimension uniformly bounded away from 1. This result generalizes the result of Larman, who obtained the same conclusion for circle packings inside a square. We also show that our theorem is optimal and does not hold in general without lower curvature bounds. In particular, we construct packings by strictly convex, smooth curves whose residual sets have dimension 1. On the other hand, we prove that any packing by strictly convex curves cannot have $\sigma$-finite Hausdorff 1-measure.

Abstract:We study isomorphic properties of two generalizations of intersection bodies, the class of k-intersection bodies and the class of generalized k-intersection bodies. We also show that the Banach-Mazur distance of the k-intersection body of a convex body, when it exists and it is convex, with the Euclidean ball, is bounded by a constant depending only on k, generalizing a well-known result of Hensley and Borell. We conclude by giving some volumetric estimates for k-intersection bodies.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. We construct an extension of the classical de Rham theory on spaces with isolated singularities, that we call intersection de Rham theory. The construction is based on the definition of some closed extension of the exterior differentiation operator on (distributional) forms, based on the introduction of some boundary conditions at the singular point. We prove that the cohomology of the associated Hilbert complex, that we call intersection de Rham complex, is naturally isomorphic to the combinatorial intersection cohomology of Goresky and MacPherson.

Abstract:A polyhedron is box-integer if its intersection with any integer box $\{\ell\leq x \leq u\}$ is integer. We define principally box-integer polyhedra to be the polyhedra $P$ such that $kP$ is box-integer whenever $kP$ is integer. We characterize them in several ways, involving equimodular matrices and box-total dual integral (box-TDI) systems. A rational $r\times n$ matrix is equimodular if it has full row rank and its nonzero $r\times r$ determinants all have the same absolute value. A face-defining matrix is a full row rank matrix describing the affine hull of a face of the polyhedron. Box-TDI systems are systems which yield strong min-max relations, and the underlying polyhedron is called a box-TDI polyhedron. Our main result is that the following statements are equivalent. - The polyhedron $P$ is principally box-integer. - The polyhedron $P$ is box-TDI. - Every face-defining matrix of $P$ is equimodular. - Every face of $P$ has an equimodular face-defining matrix. - Every face of $P$ has a totally unimodular face-defining matrix. - For every face $F$ of $P$, lin($F$) has a totally unimodular basis. Along our proof, we show that a cone $\{x:Ax\leq \mathbf{0}\}$ is box-TDI if and only if it is box-integer, and that these properties are passed on to its polar. We illustrate the use of these characterizations by reviewing well known results about box-TDI polyhedra. We also provide several applications. The first one is a new perspective on the equivalence between two results about binary clutters. Secondly, we refute a conjecture of Ding, Zang, and Zhao about box-perfect graphs. Thirdly, we discuss connections with an abstract class of polyhedra having the Integer Carathéodory Property. Finally, we characterize the box-TDIness of the cone of conservative functions of a graph and provide a corresponding box-TDI system.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a totally unimodular list of vectors in some lattice. Let $B_X$ be the box spline defined by $X$. Its support is the zonotope $Z(X)$. We show that any real-valued function defined on the set of lattice points in the interior of $Z(X)$ can be extended to a function on $Z(X)$ of the form $p(D)B_X$ in a unique way, where $p(D)$ is a differential operator that is contained in the so-called internal $\Pcal$-space. This was conjectured by Olga Holtz and Amos Ron. We also point out connections between this interpolation problem and matroid theory, including a deletion-contraction decomposition.

An Intersection Matrix for Affine Hyperplane Arrangements

Abstract:For a real affine hyperplane arrangement, we define an integer intersection matrix with a natural $q$-deformation related to the intersections of bounded chambers of the arrangement. By connecting the integer matrix to a bilinear form of Schechtman-Varchenko, we show that there is a closed formula for its determinant that only depends on the combinatorics of the underlying matroid. We conjecture an analogous formula for its $q$-deformation. Our work also applies more generally in the setting of affine oriented matroids. Additionally, we give a representation-theoretic interpretation of our $q$-intersection matrix using Braden-Licata-Proudfoot-Websters's hypertoric category $\mathcal{O}$ (or more generally Kowalenko-Mautner's category $\mathcal{O}$ for oriented matroid programs). This paper is part of a broader program to categorify matroidal Schur algebras defined by Braden-Mautner.

Abstract:Two axis-aligned boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are \emph{$k$-neighborly} if their intersection has dimension at least $d-k$ and at most $d-1$. The maximum number of pairwise $k$-neighborly boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is denoted by $n(k,d)$. It is known that $n(k,d)=\Theta(d^k)$, for fixed $1\leqslant k\leqslant d$, but exact formulas are known only in three cases: $k=1$, $k=d-1$, and $k=d$. In particular, the formula $n(1,d)=d+1$ is equivalent to the famous theorem of Graham and Pollak on bipartite partitions of cliques.
