Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed kth order symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution set for the case k >= n/2, provided the conformal class admits a k-admissible metric. These results have been proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky, Trudinger and Wang for the manifolds without boundary, and by Jin et al. and S. Chen for the locally conformally flat manifolds with boundary.
Getting a handle on contact manifolds

Abstract:We develop the details of a surgery theory for contact manifolds of arbitrary dimension via convex structures, extending the 3-dimensional theory developed by Giroux. The theory is analogous to that of Weinstein manifolds in symplectic geometry, with the key difference that the vector field does not necessarily have positive divergence everywhere. The surgery theory for contact manifolds contains the surgery theory for Weinstein manifolds via a sutured model for attaching critical points of low index. Using this sutured model, we show that the existence of convex structures on closed contact manifolds is guaranteed, a result equivalent to the existence of supporting Weinstein open book decompositions.

Abstract:Surgery triangles are an important computational tool in Floer homology. Given a connected oriented surface $\Sigma$, we consider the abelian group $K(\Sigma)$ generated by bordered 3-manifolds with boundary $\Sigma$, modulo the relation that the three manifolds involved in any surgery triangle sum to zero. We show that $K(\Sigma)$ is a finitely generated free abelian group and compute its rank. We also construct an explicit basis and show that it generates all bordered 3-manifolds in a certain stronger sense. Our basis is strictly contained in another finite generating set which was constructed previously by Baldwin and Bloom. As a byproduct we confirm a conjecture of Blokhuis and Brouwer on spanning sets for the binary symplectic dual polar space.

Abstract:For every $k \geq 2$ we construct infinitely many $4k$-dimensional manifolds that are all stably diffeomorphic but pairwise not homotopy equivalent. Each of these manifolds has hyperbolic intersection form and is stably parallelisable. In fact we construct infinitely many such infinite sets. To achieve this we prove a realisation result for appropriate subsets of Kreck's modified surgery monoid $\ell_{2q+1}(\mathbb{Z}[\pi])$, analogous to Wall's realisation of the odd-dimensional surgery obstruction $L$-group $L_{2q+1}^s(\mathbb{Z}[\pi])$.

Abstract:We prove that closed manifolds admitting a generic metric whose sectional curvature is locally quasi-constant are graphs of space forms. In the more general setting of QC spaces where sets of isotropic points are arbitrary, under suitable positivity assumption and for torsion-free fundamental groups they are still diffeomorphic to connected sums of spherical space forms and spherical bundles over the circle.

Abstract:It is well-known that an n-dimensional Poincar\'{e} complex $X^n$, $n \ge 5$, has the homotopy type of a compact topological $n$-manifold if the total surgery obstruction $s(X^n)$ vanishes. The present paper discusses recent attempts to prove analogous result in dimension 4. We begin by reviewing the necessary algebraic and controlled surgery theory. Next, we discuss the key idea of Quinn's approach. Finally, we present some cases of special fundamental groups, due to the authors and to Yamasaki.
A surgery formula for Seiberg-Witten invariants

Abstract:We prove a surgery formula for the ordinary Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth $4$-manifolds with $b_1 =1$. Our formula expresses the Seiberg-Witten invariants of the manifold after the surgery, in terms of the original Seiberg-Witten moduli space cut down by a cohomology class in the configuration space. This formula can be used to find exotic smooth structures on nonsimply connected $4$-manifolds, and gives a lower bound of the genus of an embedding surface in nonsimply connected $4$-manifolds. In forthcoming work, we will extend these results to give a surgery formula for the families Seiberg-Witten invariants.

Extended surgery theory for simply-connected $4k$-manifolds

Abstract:Kreck proved that two $2q$-manifolds are stably diffeomorphic if and only if they admit normally bordant normal $(q-1)$-smoothings over the same normal $(q-1)$-type $(B,\xi)$. We show that stable diffeomorphism can be replaced by diffeomorphism if the normal smoothings have isomorphic Q-forms (which consists of the intersection form of the manifold and the induced homomorphism on $H_q$), when the manifolds are simply-connected, $q=2k$ is even and $H_q(B)$ is free. This proves a special case of Crowley's Q-form conjecture. The basis of the proof is the construction of an extended surgery obstruction associated to a normal bordism. As an application, we identify the inertia group of a $(2k-1)$-connected $4k$-manifold with the kernel of a certain bordism map. By the calculations of Senger-Zhang and earlier results, these kernels are now known in all cases. For $k=2,4$, the combination of these results determines the inertia groups. We also obtain, for a simply-connected $4k$-manifold $M$ with normal $(q-1)$-type $(B,\xi)$ such that $H_q(B)$ is free, an algebraic description of the stable class of $M$, that is, the set of diffeomorphism classes of manifolds stably diffeomorphic to $M$. Using this description, we explicitly compute the stable class of manifolds $M$ with rank-$2$ hyperbolic intersection form.

Abstract:We classify all the lattices realized as the intersection form of a positive definite four manifold with boundary $S_n^3(K)$ for a knot $K$ in the three sphere and a positive integer $n$ greater than $4g_4(K)+3$. We then use this result to define a concordance invariant and generalize a theorem of Rasmussen on lens space surgeries.

Abstract:Motivated by the celebrated Schoen-Yau-Gromov-Lawson surgery theory onmetrics of positive scalar curvature, we construct a double manifold associatedwith a minimal isoparametric hypersurface in the unit sphere. The resultingdouble manifold carries a metric of positive scalar curvature and anisoparametric foliation as well. To investigate the topology of the doublemanifolds, we use K-theory and the representation of the Clifford algebra forthe FKM-type, and determine completely the isotropy subgroups of singularorbits for homogeneous case.

Abstract:Cosymplectic and normal almost contact structures are analogues of symplectic and complex structures that can be defined on 3-manifolds. Their existence imposes strong topological constraints. Generalized geometry offers a natural common generalization of these two structures: $B_3$-generalized complex structures. We prove that any closed orientable 3-manifold admits such a structure, which can be chosen to be stable, that is, generically cosymplectic up to generalized diffeomorphism.

Abstract:In the present analysis of Procyon-A and Eta-Bootis, we use the local-wave formalism which, despite its lack of precision inherent to any semi-analytical method, uses directly the model profile without any modification when calculating the acoustic mode eigenfrequencies. These two solar-like stars present steep variations toward the center due to the convective core stratification, and toward the surface due to the very thin convective zone. Based on different boundary conditions, the frequencies obtained with this formalism are different from that of the classical numerical calculation. We point out that (1) the frequencies calculated with the local-wave formalism seem to agree better with observational ones. All the frequencies detected with a good confident level including those classified as 'noise' find an identification, (2) some frequencies can be clearly identified here as indications of the core limit.

Abstract:We study isometric actions of compact Lie groups on complete orientable positively curved n-manifolds whose orbit spaces have non-empty boundary in the sense of Alexandrov geometry. In particular, we classify quotients of the unit sphere by actions of compact simple Lie groups with non-empty boundary. We deduce from this the list of representations of compact simple Lie groups that admit non-trivial reductions. As a tool of special interest, we introduce a new geometric invariant of a compact symmetric space, namely, the minimal number of points in a “spanning set” of the space.

Abstract:We consider the problem of preserving weighted Riemannian metrics of positive Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature along surgery. We establish two theorems of this type: One for connected sums, and one for surgeries along higher-dimensional spheres. In contrast to known surgery results for positive Ricci curvature, these results are local, i.e. we only impose assumptions on the weighted metric locally around the sphere along which the surgery is performed. As application we then show that all closed, simply-connected spin 5-manifolds admit a weighted Riemannian metric of positive Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature. By a result of Lott, this also provides new examples of manifolds with a Riemannian metric of positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:We study the set of curvature functions which a given compact manifold with boundary can possess. First, we prove that the sign demanded by the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem is a necessary and sufficient condition for a given function to be the geodesic curvature or the Gaussian curvature of some conformally equivalent metric. Our approach allows us to solve problems that are impossible to solve in the pointwise conformal case. Moreover, we obtain a deep and more delicate information on pointwise conformal deformations. We prove new existence and nonexistence results for metrics with prescribed curvature in the conformal setting, which depend on the Euler characteristic.

Abstract:We try to give a geometric construction for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories using three-manifolds and Dehn surgeries. We follow the story that wrapping M5-branes on plumbing three-manifolds leads to 3d theories with mixed Chern-Simons levels. This construction can be decorated by adding non-compact Lagrangian submanifolds in the cotangent bundles of three-manifolds. The M5-branes wrapping on these submanifolds through M-theory/IIB string duality lead to flavor D5-branes that engineer chiral multiplets. In this note, we only consider unknotted matter circles, which are intersections between these non-compact M5-branes and plumbing manifolds. Then various dualities of 3d theories can be interpreted as Kirby moves and equivalent surgeries. We also find the dictionary between geometric structures of three-manifolds and physical aspects of gauge theories.

Abstract:We execute Avdek's algorithm to find many algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifolds by contact $+1$ surgeries. In particular, we show that a contact $1/k$ surgery on the standard contact $3$-sphere along any positive torus knot with the maximum Thurston-Bennequin invariant yields an algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifold, where $k$ is a positive integer.
