Abstract:An important hurdle to be faced by any model proposing a resolution to the cosmological constant problem is Weinberg's venerable no go theorem. This theorem states that no local field equations including classical gravity can have a flat Minkowski solution for generic values of the parameters, in other words, the no go theorem forbids the existence of any solution to the cosmological constant problem within local field theories without fine tuning. Though the original Weinberg theorem is valid only in classical gravity, in this article we prove that this theorem holds even in quantum gravity. Our proof is very general since it makes use of the BRST invariance emerging after gauge-fixing of general coordinate invariance and does not depend on the detail of quantum gravity.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the cosmological constant problem in quantum gravity. Specifically, it attempts to prove that Weinberg's "no - go theorem" is also valid in quantum gravity. Weinberg's no - go theorem states that in classical gravity, any theory containing local field equations usually cannot have a flat Minkowski solution under general values of parameters, which means that without fine - tuning, local field theories cannot solve the cosmological constant problem. The key to the paper is to extend this classical theorem to the framework of quantum gravity. By using BRST invariance (a symmetry that emerges from general coordinate invariance after gauge fixing), the author proves that this no - go theorem still holds even in quantum gravity. This shows that even considering quantum effects, local field theories still cannot naturally explain the small value of the cosmological constant without fine - tuning. ### Main contributions 1. **No - go theorem in quantum gravity**: It is proved that Weinberg's no - go theorem holds not only in classical gravity but also in quantum gravity. 2. **BRST invariance**: Using BRST invariance as the basis for the proof makes the conclusion universal and not dependent on the details of specific quantum gravity models. 3. **Spontaneous symmetry breaking**: The spontaneous breaking of GL(4) symmetry in quantum gravity is discussed, and it is shown that Lorentz symmetry is still maintained. ### Formula summary - **Total action**: \[ S=\int d^{4}x\mathcal{L} \] where the Lagrangian density \(\mathcal{L}\) is defined as: \[ \mathcal{L}=\frac{1}{2\sqrt{-g}}(R - 2\Lambda)+\partial_{\mu}(\sqrt{-g}g^{\mu\nu})b_{\nu}-i\sqrt{-g}g^{\mu\nu}\partial_{\mu}\bar{c}_{\rho}\partial_{\nu}c^{\rho}+\mathcal{L}_{m} \] - **De Donder condition**: \[ \partial_{\mu}(\sqrt{-g}g^{\mu\nu}) = 0 \] - **BRST transformation**: \[ \delta_{B}g_{\mu\nu}=-\partial_{\mu}c^{\rho}g_{\rho\nu}-\partial_{\nu}c^{\rho}g_{\rho\mu},\quad\delta_{B}c^{\mu}=0,\quad\delta_{B}\bar{c}^{\mu}=ib^{\mu},\quad\delta_{B}b^{\mu}=0 \] - **BRST transformation of the effective action**: \[ \delta_{B}\tilde{\Gamma}=-(\partial_{\rho}c^{\rho})\tilde{\Gamma} \] - **Effective potential**: \[ \tilde{\Gamma}=\sqrt{-g}V(\phi_{i}) \] - **Fine - tuning of the cosmological constant**: \[ V(\phi_{i}) = 0 \] Through these formulas and derivations, the paper successfully proves that Weinberg's no - go theorem still holds in quantum gravity, further deepening the understanding of the cosmological constant problem.
