Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact real algebraic set of dimension $n$. We prove that every Euclidean continuous map from $X$ into the unit $n$-sphere can be approximated by regulous map. This strengthens and generalizes previously known results.

Abstract:Given a finite simplicial complex $\mathcal{K}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and a real algebraic variety $Y,$ by a $\mathcal{K}$-regular map $|\mathcal{K}|\rightarrow Y$ we mean a continuous map whose restriction to every simplex in $\mathcal{K}$ is a regular map. A simplified version of our main result says that if $Y$ is a uniformly retract rational variety and if $k, l$ are integers satisfying $0\leq l\leq k,$ then every $\mathcal{C}^l$ map $|\mathcal{K}|\rightarrow Y$ can be approximated in the $\mathcal{C}^l$ topology by $\mathcal{K}$-regular maps of class $\mathcal{C}^k.$ By definition, $Y$ is uniformly retract rational if for every point $y\in Y$ there is a Zariski open neighborhood $V\subset Y$ of $y$ such that the identity map of $V$ is the composite of regular maps $V\rightarrow W\rightarrow V,$ where $W\subset\mathbb{R}^p$ is a Zariski open set for some $p$ depending on $y.$

Abstract:A nonsingular real algebraic variety Y is said to have the approximation property if for every real algebraic variety X the following holds: if f:X-->Y is a C^inf map that is homotopic to a regular map, then f can be approximated in the C^inf topology by regular maps. In this paper, we characterize the varieties Y with the approximation property. We also characterize the varieties Y with the approximation property combined with a suitable interpolation condition. Some of our results have variants concerning the regular approximation of continuous maps defined on (possibly singular) real algebraic varieties.

Abstract:This is a study on approximating a Riemannian manifold by polyhedra. Our scope is understanding Tullio Regge's [52] article in the restricted Riemannian frame. We give a proof of the Regge theorem along lines close to its original intuition: one can approximate a compact domain of a Riemannian manifold by polyhedra in such a way that the integral of the scalar curvature is approximated by a corresponding polyhedral curvature.

Abstract:We consider proper holomorphic maps of ball complements and differences in complex euclidean spaces of dimension at least two. Such maps are always rational, which naturally leads to a related problem of classifying rational maps taking concentric spheres to concentric spheres, what we call $m$-fold sphere maps; a proper map of the difference of concentric balls is a $2$-fold sphere map. We prove that proper maps of ball complements are in one to one correspondence with polynomial proper maps of balls taking infinity to infinity. We show that rational $m$-fold sphere maps of degree less than $m$ (or polynomial maps of degree $m$ or less) must take all concentric spheres to concentric spheres and we provide a complete classification of them. We prove that these degree bounds are sharp.

Abstract:Certain classical results on cluster sets and boundary cluster sets of analytic functions, due to Iversen, Lindelöf, Noshiro, Tsuji, Ohtsuka, Pommerenke, Carmona, Cufi and others, are extended to n-dimensional quasiconformal mappings. Unlike what is usually the case in the context of analytic functions, our considerations are not restricted to mappings of a disk or ball only. It is shown, for instance, that quasiconformal cluster sets and boundary cluster sets, taken at a non-isolated boundary point of an arbitrary domain, coincide. More refined versions are established in the special case where the domain is the open unit ball. These include cluster set considerations of the induced radial boundary extension and results where certain exceptional sets on the boundary are allowed for.

Abstract:Given two real algebraic varieties X and Y, we denote by R(X,Y) the set of all regular maps from X to Y. The set R(X,Y) is regarded as a topological subspace of the space C(X,Y) of all continuous maps from X to Y endowed with the compact-open topology. We prove, in a much more general setting than previously considered, that each path component of C(X,Y) contains at most one path component of R(X,Y), and for every positive integer k the inclusion map R(X,Y)-->C(X,Y) induces an isomorphism between the kth homotopy groups of the corresponding path components. We also identify several cases where this inclusion map is a weak homotopy equivalence.

Abstract:This paper addresses weak approximation for rationally connected varieties defined over the function field of a curve, especially at places of bad reduction. Our approach entails analyzing the rational connectivity of the smooth locus of singular reductions of the variety. As an application, we prove weak approximation for cubic surfaces with square-free discriminant.

Abstract:We establish an adelic version of Dirichlet's approximation theorem on spheres. Let $K$ be a number field, $E$ be a rigid adelic space over $K$ and $q\colon E\to K$ be a quadratic form. Let $v$ be a place of $K$ and $\alpha\in E\otimes_{K}K_{v}$ such that $q(\alpha)=1$. We produce an explicit constant $c$ having the following property. If there exists $x\in E$ such that $q(x)=1$ then, for any $T>c$, there exists $(\upupsilon,\upphi)\in E\times K$, with $\max{(\Vert\upupsilon\Vert_{E,v},\vert\upphi\vert_{v})}\le T$ and $\max{(\Vert\upupsilon\Vert_{E,w},\vert\upphi\vert_{w})}$ controlled for any place $w$, satisfying $q(\upupsilon)=\upphi^{2}\ne 0$ and $\vert q(\alpha\upphi-\upupsilon)\vert_{v}\le c\vert\upphi\vert_{v}/T$. This remains true for some infinite algebraic extensions as well as for a compact set of places of $K$. Our statements generalize and improve on earlier results by Kleinbock \\& Merrill (2015) and Moshchevitin (2017). The proofs rely on the quadratic Siegel's lemma in a rigid adelic space obtained by the author and R{é}mond (2017).

Abstract:Given a sequence of Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities in $L_2$ on a usual compact space $\mathcal M$, Gröchenig introduced the weighted least squares polynomials and the least squares quadrature from pointwise samples of a function, and obtained approximation theorems and quadrature errors. In this paper we obtain approximation theorems and quadrature errors on the sphere which are optimal. We also give upper bounds of the operator norms of the weighted least squares operators.

Abstract:We prove several results on approximation and interpolation of holomorphic Legendrian curves in convex domains in $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, with the standard contact structure. Namely, we show that such a curve, defined on a compact bordered Riemann surface $M$, whose image lies in the interior of a convex domain $\mathscr{D} \subset \mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$, may be approximated uniformly on compacts in the interior $\mathrm{Int} \, M$ by holomorphic Legendrian curves $\mathrm{Int} \, M \to \mathscr{D}$ such that the approximants are proper, complete, agree with the starting curve on a given finite set in $\mathrm{Int} \, M$ to a given finite order, and hit a specified diverging discrete set in the convex domain. We first show approximation of this kind on bounded strongly convex domains and then generalise it to arbitrary convex domains. As a consequence we show that any bordered Riemann surface properly embeds into a convex domain as a complete holomorphic Legendrian curve under a suitable geometric condition on the boundary of the codomain.

Abstract:We realise Buchweitz and Flenner's semiregularity map (and hence a fortiori Bloch's semiregularity map) for a smooth variety $X$ as the tangent of a generalised Abel--Jacobi map on the derived moduli stack of perfect complexes on $X$. The target of this map is an analogue of Deligne cohomology defined in terms of cyclic homology, and Goodwillie's theorem on nilpotent ideals ensures that it has the desired tangent space (a truncated de Rham complex). Immediate consequences are the semiregularity conjectures: that the semiregularity maps annihilate all obstructions, and that if $X$ is deformed, semiregularity measures the failure of the Chern character to remain a Hodge class. This gives rise to reduced obstruction theories of the type featuring in the study of reduced Gromov--Witten and Pandharipande--Thomas invariants. We also give generalisations allowing $X$ to be singular, and even a derived Artin stack.

Abstract:We show that norms on certain Banach spaces $X$ can be approximated uniformly, and with arbitrary precision, on bounded subsets of $X$ by $C^{\infty}$ smooth norms and polyhedral norms. In particular, we show that this holds for any equivalent norm on $c_0(\Gamma)$, where $\Gamma$ is an arbitrary set. We also give a necessary condition for the existence of a polyhedral norm on a weakly compactly generated Banach space, which extends a well-known result of Fonf.

Abstract:We introduce a class of real algebraic varieties characterised by a simple rationality condition, which exhibit strong properties regarding approximation of continuous and smooth mappings by regular ones. They form a natural counterpart to the classes of malleable and quasi-malleable varieties. The approximation property studied here is stronger than those considered before and allows us to deduce non-trivial facts about extensions of regular mappings between varieties.

Abstract:We prove that for finitely generated abelian groups $A$ and $B$, the space of $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring maps between the spherical groups rings $\mathbb{S}[A] \to \mathbb{S}[B]$ is equivalent to the discrete set of group homomorphisms $A \to B$. We also prove generalizations where the sphere is replaced by other ring spectra, e.g. we give a formula for the strict units in group rings of the form $R[A]$ for $A$ a finite $p$-group and $R$ $p$-completely chromatically complete.

Regular immersions directed by algebraically elliptic cones

Abstract:Let $M$ be an open Riemann surface and $A$ be the punctured cone in $\mathbb{C}^n\setminus\{0\}$ on a smooth projective variety $Y$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$. Recently, Runge approximation theorems with interpolation for holomorphic immersions $M\to\mathbb{C}^n$, directed by $A$, have been proved under the assumption that $A$ is an Oka manifold. We prove analogous results in the algebraic setting, for regular immersions directed by $A$ from a smooth affine curve $M$ into $\mathbb{C}^n$. The Oka property is naturally replaced by the stronger assumption that $A$ is algebraically elliptic, which it is if $Y$ is uniformly rational. Under this assumption, a homotopy-theoretic necessary and sufficient condition for approximation and interpolation emerges. We show that this condition is satisfied in many cases of interest.

Abstract:A celebrated result of Beck shows that for any set of $N$ points on $\mathbb{S}^d$ there always exists a spherical cap $B \subset \mathbb{S}^d$ such that number of points in the cap deviates from the expected value $\sigma(B) \cdot N$ by at least $N^{1/2 - 1/2d}$, where $\sigma$ is the normalized surface measure. We refine the result and show that, when $d \not\equiv 1 ~(\mbox{mod}~4)$, there exists a (small and very specific) set of real numbers such that for every $r>0$ from the set one is always guaranteed to find a spherical cap $C_r$ with the given radius $r$ for which the result holds. The main new ingredient is a generalization of the notion of badly approximable numbers to the setting of Gegenbauer polynomials: these are fixed numbers $ x \in (-1,1)$ such that the sequence of Gegenbauer polynomials $(C_n^{\lambda}(x))_{n=1}^{\infty}$ avoids being close to 0 in a precise quantitative sense.

Abstract:We present a full geometric characterization of the $1$-dimensional (semi\-algebraic) images $S$ of either $n$-dimensional closed balls $\overline{\mathcal B}_n\subset{\mathbb R}^n$ (of center the origin and radius $1$) or $n$-dimensional spheres ${\mathbb S}^n\subset{\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ (of center the origin and radius $1$) under polynomial, regular and regulous maps for some $n\geq1$. In all the previous cases one can find an alternative polynomial, regular or regulous map on either $\overline{\mathcal B}_1:=[-1,1]$ or ${\mathbb S}^1$ such that $S$ is the image under such map of either $\overline{\mathcal B}_1:=[-1,1]$ or ${\mathbb S}^1$. As a byproduct, we provide a full characterization of the images of ${\mathbb S}^1\subset{\mathbb C}\equiv{\mathbb R}^2$ under Laurent polynomials $f\in{\mathbb C}[{\tt z},{\tt z}^{-1}]$, taking advantage of some previous works of Kobalev-Yang and Wilmshurst.

Abstract:We show that, for any given $q\geq 0$, any Sasakian structure on a closed manifold $M$ is approximated in the $C^{q}$-norm by structures induced by CR embeddings into weighted Sasakian spheres. In order to obtain this result, we also strengthen the approximation of an orbifold Kähler form by projectively induced ones given by Ross and Thomas in [21] in the $C^0$-norm to a $C^{q}$-approximation.
