Abstract:We study approximations of holomorphic functions of several complex variables by proper subrings of the polynomials. The subrings in question consist of polynomials of several complex variables whose exponents are restricted to a prescribed convex cone $\mathbb{R}_+S$ for some compact convex $S\in \mathbb{R}^n_+$. Analogous to the polynomial hull of a set, we denote the hull of $K$ with respect to the given ring by can define hulls of a set $K$ with respect to the given ring, here denoted $\widehat K{}^S$. By studying an extremal function $V^S_K(z)$, we show a version of the Runge-Oka-Weil Theorem on approximation by these subrings on compact subsets of $\mathbb{C}^{*n}$ that satisfy $K= \widehat K{}^S$ and $V^{S*}_K|_K=0$. We show a sharper result for compact Reinhardt sets $K$, that a holomorphic function is uniformly approximable on $\widehat K{}^S$ by members of the ring if and only if it is bounded on $\widehat K{}^S$. We also show that if $K$ is a compact Reinhardt subsets of $\mathbb{C}^{*n}$, then we have $V^S_K(z)=\sup_{s\in S} (\langle s ,{\operatorname{Log}\, z}\rangle- \varphi_A(s)) $, where $\varphi_A$ is the supporting function of $A=\operatorname{Log}\, K= \{(\log|z_1|,\dots, \log|z_n|) \,;\, z\in K\}$.

Abstract:We study certain weighted Bergman and weighted Besov spaces of holomorphic functions in the polydisk and in the unit ball. We seek Mergelyan-type conditions on the non-radial weight function to guarantee that the dilations of a given function tend to the same function in norm; in particular, we seek conditions on the non-radial weights to ensure that the analytic polynomials are dense in the space.

Holomorphic Legendrian curves in convex domains

Abstract:We prove several results on approximation and interpolation of holomorphic Legendrian curves in convex domains in $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, with the standard contact structure. Namely, we show that such a curve, defined on a compact bordered Riemann surface $M$, whose image lies in the interior of a convex domain $\mathscr{D} \subset \mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$, may be approximated uniformly on compacts in the interior $\mathrm{Int} \, M$ by holomorphic Legendrian curves $\mathrm{Int} \, M \to \mathscr{D}$ such that the approximants are proper, complete, agree with the starting curve on a given finite set in $\mathrm{Int} \, M$ to a given finite order, and hit a specified diverging discrete set in the convex domain. We first show approximation of this kind on bounded strongly convex domains and then generalise it to arbitrary convex domains. As a consequence we show that any bordered Riemann surface properly embeds into a convex domain as a complete holomorphic Legendrian curve under a suitable geometric condition on the boundary of the codomain.

Abstract:In Gauthier, Manolaki, and Nestoridis (2021, Advances in Mathematics 381, 107649), in order to correct a false Mergelyan-type statement given in Gamelin and Garnett (1969, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 143, 187–200) on uniform approximation on compact sets K in , the authors introduced a natural function algebra which is smaller than the classical one . In the present paper, we investigate when these two algebras coincide and compare them with the classes of all plausibly approximable functions by polynomials or rational functions or functions holomorphic on open sets containing the compact set K . Finally, we introduce a notion of O -hull of K and strengthen known results.

Abstract:Herglotz's representation of holomorphic functions with positive real part and Carathéodory's theorem on approximation by inner functions are two well‐known classical results in the theory of holomorphic functions on the unit disc. We show that they are equivalent. On a multi‐connected domain Ω , a version of Heglotz's representation is known. Carathéodory's approximation was not known. We formulate and prove it and then show that it is equivalent to the known form of Herglotz's representation. Additionally, it also enables us to prove a new Heglotz's representation in the style of Korányi and Pukánszky. Of particular interest is the fact that the scaling technique of the disc is replaced by Carathéodory's approximation theorem while proving this new form of Herglotz's representation. Carathéodory's approximation theorem is also proved for operator‐valued functions on a multi‐connected domain.

Abstract:Let $w$ be an unbounded radial weight on the complex plane. We study the following approximation problem: find a proper holomorphic map $f: \mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}^n$ such that $|f|$ is equivalent to $w$. We give several characterizations of those $w$ for which the problem is solvable. In particular, a constructive characterization is given in terms of tropical power series. Moreover, the following natural objects and properties are involved: essential weights on the complex plane, approximation by power series with positive coefficients, approximation by the maximum of a holomorphic function modulus. Extensions to several complex variables and approximation by harmonic maps are also considered.

Abstract:We display four approximation theorems for manifold-valued mappings. The first one approximates holomorphic embeddings on pseudoconvex domains in $\Bbb C^n$ with holomorphic embeddings with dense images. The second theorem approximates holomorphic mappings on complex manifolds with bounded images with holomorphic mappings with dense images. The last two theorems work the other way around, constructing (in different settings) sequences of holomorphic mappings (embeddings in the first one) converging to a mapping with dense image defined on a given compact minus certain points (thus in general not holomorphic).

Abstract:We introduce new vanishing subspaces of the homogeneous Hölder space $\dot{C}^{0,\omega}(X,Y),$ in the generality of a doubling modulus $\omega$ and normed spaces $X$ and $Y.$ For many couples $X,Y,$ we show these vanishing subspaces to completely characterize those Hölder functions that admit approximations, in the Hölder seminorm, by smooth, Lipschitz and boundedly supported functions. Beyond the intrinsic interest of these results, we also present connections to bi-parameter harmonic analysis on the Euclidean space and in particular to compactness of the bi-commutator.

Rational approximation of holomorphic semigroups revisited

Abstract:Using a recently developed $\mathcal H$-calculus we propose a unified approach to the study of rational approximations of holomorphic semigroups on Banach spaces. We provide unified and simple proofs to a number of basic results on semigroup approximations and substantially improve some of them. We show that many of our estimates are essentially optimal, thus complementing the existing literature.

The results include approximation on compact starlike sets and compact axially symmetric sets. Abstract:Let $\mathbb D^n\subset\mathbb C^n$ be the open unit polydisk, $K\subset\mathbb D^n$ be an $n$-ary Cartesian product of planar sets, and $\hat U\subset \mathfrak M^n$ be an open neighbourhood of the closure $\bar K$ of $K$ in $\mathfrak M^n$, where $\mathfrak M$ is the maximal ideal space of the algebra $H^\infty$ of bounded holomorphic functions on $\mathbb D$. Let $X$ be a complex Banach space and $H^\infty(V,X)$ be the space of bounded $X$-valued holomorphic functions on an open set $V\subset\mathbb D^n$. We prove that any $f\in H^\infty(U,X)$, where $U=\hat U\cap\mathbb D^n$, can be uniformly approximated on $K$ by ratios $h/b$, where $h\in H^\infty(\mathbb D^n,X)$ and $b$ is the product of interpolating Blaschke products such that $\inf_K |b|>0$. Moreover, if $\bar K$ is contained in a compact holomorphically convex subset of $\hat U$, then $h/b$ above can be replaced by $h$ for any $f$. The results follow from a new constructive Runge-type approximation theorem for Banach-valued holomorphic functions on open subsets of $\mathbb D$ and extend the fundamental results of Suárez on Runge-type approximation for analytic germs on compact subsets of $\mathfrak M$. They can also be applied to the long-standing corona problem which asks whether $\mathbb D^n$ is dense in the maximal ideal space of $H^\infty(\mathbb D^n)$ for all $n\ge 2$.

Abstract:This paper aims at approximation of functions by linear integral operators on variable exponent spaces associated with a general exponent function on a domain of a Euclidean space. Under a log-Hölder continuity assumption of the exponent function, we present quantitative estimates for the approximation and solve an open problem raised in our earlier work. As applications of our key estimates, we provide high orders of approximation by quasi-interpolation type and linear combinations of Bernstein type integral operators on variable exponent spaces. We also introduce K-functionals and moduli of smoothness on variable exponent spaces and discuss their relationships and applications.

Abstract:Abstract We strengthen the classical approximation theorems of Weierstrass, Runge, and Mergelyan by showing the polynomial and rational approximants can be taken to have a simple geometric structure. In particular, when approximating a function $f$ on a compact set $K$, the critical points of our approximants may be taken to lie in any given domain containing $K$, and all the critical values in any given neighborhood of the polynomially convex hull of $f(K)$.

Abstract:This paper addresses the approximation of fractional harmonic maps. Besides a unit-length constraint, one has to tackle the difficulty of nonlocality. We establish weak compactness results for critical points of the fractional Dirichlet energy on unit-length vector fields. We devise and analyze numerical methods for the approximation of various partial differential equations related to fractional harmonic maps. The compactness results imply the convergence of numerical approximations. Numerical examples on spin chain dynamics and point defects are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:In the present article we obtain generic approximations, under sharp conditions, of holomorphic functions on arbitrary open sets by sequences of their Padé approximants. Similar results hold for functions smooth on the boundary of their domain of definition. In addition, the approximation is valid simultaneously with respect to all centers of expansion.

Abstract:The main theorem of this article is a Runge type theorem proved for k-differentials . The integrability in the - norm is defined for k-differentials in Section 2. We consider k-differentials which are integrable in the defined - norm on the Riemann surface, and are holomorphic on an open subset of that surface. We will show those k-differentials can be approximated by meromorphic k-differentials. The proof applies a generalized form of the Poincaré series map. This generalized form is proved in Section 3. Section 2 contains the definition of the Poincaré series and its convergence, with particular focus on the convergence of the Poincaré series for rational functions, which is applied in the main theorem. Sections 3 and 4 contain the new results proved in this paper. The statement and proof of the main theorem are in Section 4.

Abstract:Many authors, e.g., Bavrin, Jakubowski, Liczberski, Pfaltzgraff, Sitarski, Suffridge, and Stankiewicz, have discussed some families of holomorphic functions of several complex variables described by some geometrical or analytical conditions. We consider a family of holomorphic functions of several complex variables described in n-circular domain of the space C n . We investigate relations between this family and some of type of Bavrin’s families. We give estimates of G-balance of k-homogeneous polynomial, a distortion type theorem and a sufficient condition for functions belonging to this family. Furthermore, we present some examples of functions from the considered class.
