Abstract:Intermittent control has a long history in the physiological literature and there is strong experimental evidence that some human control systems are intermittent. Intermittent control has also appeared in various forms in the engineering literature. This article discusses a particular mathematical model of Event-driven Intermittent Control which brings together engineering and physiological insights and builds on and extends previous work in this area. Illustrative examples of the properties of Intermittent Control in a physiological context are given together with suggestions for future research directions in both physiology and engineering.

Abstract:In the context of constrained control-systems, the Set of Sustainable Thresholds plays in a sense the role of a dual object to the so-called Viability Kernel, because it describes all the thresholds that must be satisfied by the state of the system along a time interval, for a prescribed initial condition. This work aims at analyzing the sensitivity of the Set of Sustainable Thresholds, when it is seen as a set-valued map that depends on the initial position. In this regard, we investigate semicontinuity and Lipschitz continuity properties of this mapping, and we also study several contexts when the Set of Sustainable Thresholds is convex-valued.

A Switching Periodic Adaptive Control Approach for Time-Varying Parameters with Unknown Periodicity

Abstract:Periodic variations are encountered in many real systems, which can exist in the system parameters, as a disturbance or as the tracking objective. However, there exist a great number of situations where the periodicity is not known in advance. Hence, how to compensate for the effects of time-varying parameters with unknown periodicity remains a challenge for the controller design. In this paper, we proposed a switching periodic adaptive control approach for continuous-time nonlinear parametric systems with periodic uncertainties in which the period and bound are not known in advance. We utilized a fully saturated periodic adaptation law to identify the unknown periodic parameters in a pointwise manner. In addition, we provided a logic-based switching scheme to estimate the unknown period and bound online simultaneously. By virtue of Lyapunov stability analysis, we show that the asymptotic convergence can be guaranteed irrespective of the initial conditions. Finally, we carried out numerical simulations to demonstrate the efficacy of the switching periodic adaptive control algorithm. The proposed approach can be applied to parametric nonlinear systems with time-varying parameters of unknown periodicity irrespective of the types of periodic uncertainties. Nonlinear Analysis Hybrid Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the issue of almost sure stability (ASS) for a class of stochastic strict-feedback semi-Markov jump systems (SSSJSs) under periodic intermittent control (PIC). This control method and dynamic properties are studied for the first time in strict-feedback systems. First of all, based on the structural properties of the SSSJSs, virtual controllers are designed step by step and eventually deduced into the actual controller. Furthermore, by using stochastic analysis theory and multiple Lyapunov function method, we obtain sufficient conditions for ASS via PIC, which have a close relationship with control width and control period. By virtue of multiple Lyapunov functions that depend on the system states, the conservatism caused by mode-independent cases can be reduced effectively. Finally, the effectiveness of the presented results is illustrated by simulation examples.

Abstract:This paper exhibits the closed-loop design constraints using the non-analytic function theory. First, the paper generalizes the sensitivity integral for linear feedback systems with the non-analytic sensitivity function. Sensitivity inequalities are determined by the integral relationships based on the presence of non-minimum phase zeros and right half plane poles. These inequalities are rephrased in plant parameter context, which must be satisfied by the feedback design. That indicates the ability of controllers under the influence of input disturbances and plant parameter variations. The paper then extends the integral to the analytic sensitivity function of the augmented linear feedback systems. This is useful to augment the ability of a linear feedback system to handle input disturbances and plant uncertainties, via modified sensitivity function theory. Numerical simulations are carried out to perform sensitivity analysis on three chemical control systems. That describes the usefulness and demonstrates the applicability of the result of this paper to examine and augment the ability of linear feedback system.

Abstract:Bode integrals of sensitivity and sensitivity-like functions along with complementary sensitivity and complementary sensitivity-like functions are conventionally used for describing performance limitations of a feedback control system. In this paper, we show that in the case when the disturbance is a wide sense stationary process the (comple-mentary) sensitivity Bode integral and the (complementary) sensitivity-like Bode integral are identical. A lower bound of the continuous-time complementary sensitivity-like Bode integral is also derived and examined with the linearized flight-path angle tracking control problem of an F-16 aircraft.

Abstract:<p>For intermittent control, its control signal is updated in a continuous manner on control time intervals. To overcome the limitation, time-triggered intermittent control (TIC) is presented for the first time in this article. In our work, based on a new time-triggered mechanism, the mathematical description of TIC is put forward and a TIC system is modeled. Different from the traditional time-triggered mechanism, the new time-triggered mechanism just allows the partial sampled data to be transmitted. Due to different structures of the TIC system, a mixed Lyapunov functional is introduced to obtain a general stability criterion. As a result, a stabilization criterion of continuous systems with TIC is deduced and two methods to design TIC are proposed. Further, comparisons between TIC and sampled-data control (SC) are made. Finally, an example is given for illustration.</p>

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of exponential stabilization for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems by means of periodically intermittent control. Several sufficient conditions of exponential stabilization for this class of uncertain nonlinear systems are formulated in terms of a set of linear matrix inequalities by using quadratic Lyapunov function and inequality analysis technique. Also, the synthesis of stabilization periodically intermittent state feedback controllers is present such that the close-loop system is exponentially stable. A simulation example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the input‐to‐state stability (ISS) of stochastic systems via intermittent event‐triggered control. The control update sequence during the control intervals is determined through an event‐triggered mechanism (ETM), where the periodic ETM and continuous ETM are considered separately. For the continuous ETM, a positive minimum inter‐execution time is ensured by adding waiting time, which avoids Zeno behavior. For the periodic ETM, with the help of Halanay‐like inequality, the maximum allowable bound of the sampling period is given. The number of control updates is further reduced by adding a dynamic term. In addition, sufficient conditions for ISS in stochastic systems are proposed by designing an auxiliary timer and applying the Lyapunov method. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to verify the validity of the results.

Abstract:Sensitivity of linear continuous-time SISO feedback systems, subject to control and measurement noise, is analyzed by deriving the lower bounds of Bode-like integrals via an information-theoretic approach. Bode integrals of four different sensitivity-like functions are employed to gauge the performance limitations of feedback systems. When the signals of the control system are stationary Gaussian, these four different Bode-like integrals can be represented as the differences between mutual information rates. These mutual information rates and hence the corresponding Bode-like integrals are proven to be bounded below by the unstable poles and zeros of the plant model, if the signals of the control system are wide-sense stationary.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the input-to-state stabilization problem for semilinear systems via aperiodically intermittent event-triggered control. Two types of hypotheses are considered for the aperiodicity of the intermittent control, which are the quasiperiodicity condition and the average activation time ratio condition, respectively. As for the quasiperiodicity condition, which has been widely used in previous works, we obtain that if the decay rate during control activation interval can suppress the increasing rate during the control rest interval in each period, then the input-to-state stability can be guaranteed. As for the average activation time ratio condition, by designing an auxiliary timer to make a compromise between control activation intervals and control rest intervals, we obtain that a larger value of the average activation time length over each unit time interval makes it easier to achieve the input-to-state stability. Moreover, the control gain and event-triggered parameters are jointly designed according to the feasibility of some matrix inequalities. Finally, numerical simulation examples illustrate the validity of the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the existence of insensitizing controls for the micropolar fluids in a bounded domain with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions and arbitrarily located internal controller. The study of insensitizing controls is essential to solve a stability problem, which means that we look for controls such that some functionals of the velocity fields (the so‐called sentinels) are insensitive to the small perturbations of initial data. The problem of insensitizing controls is transformed into a suitable controllability problem for a cascade system. Our proof relies on a new global Carleman inequality and the inverse mapping theorem.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the issues of finite-time control for a class of continuous-time nonlinear semi-Markovian jump systems (SMJSs) with saturation constraint via observed-based control. Both sensor and actuator saturations, and unknown nonlinearities are considered simultaneously. The main purpose of this article is to derive parameter selection sufficient conditions by designing an observed-based controller. These conditions ensure that the system is finite-time boundedness (FTB). By employing some reasonable assumptions and constructing an appropriate semi-Markovian Lyapunov function, some novel finite-time stabilization criteria are obtained, which guarantee the FTB for the underlying systems over the whole finite-time interval. Meanwhile, the observed-based controller is designed. Finally, a practical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness and merits of the proposed methods.

Abstract:In article, we study the problem of aperiodically intermittent control (APIC) for neutral stochastic delay systems (NSDSs) based on discrete observations. To overcome the difficulty caused by intermittent control, an auxiliary system is introduced. By using the Lyapunov function method, an upper bound of observation period $\delta ^{*}$ is obtained. If observation period $\delta < \delta ^{*}$ , then the auxiliary system is $p$ th $(p\geq 2)$ -moment exponentially stable. In addition to the fixed observation period $\delta < \delta ^{*}$ , this article gives a method to design an aperiodically intermittent controller and obtains a lower bound of duty cycle for all fixed $0 < \underline {T}\leq \overline {T}$ with $\underline {T}$ and $\overline {T}$ being lower bound and upper bound of control frames. That is, we proved the NSDSs with the intermittent discrete observation controller is $p$ th $(p\geq 2)$ -moment exponentially stable if the auxiliary system is $p$ th $(p\geq 2)$ -moment exponentially stable. We call this method the auxiliary system method (ASM). In fact, different from mainstream techniques, the ASM used in this article can handle the case of $0 < \underline {T}\leq \overline {T} < \delta $ even if $\delta $ is small enough. Besides, this article reveals one interesting phenomenon: classic methods may lead to error accumulation, which cannot be avoided in APIC or periodically intermittent control (PIC) for NSDSs. Finally, one numerical example, one application, and one comparison are given to show the usefulness and correctness of the proposed results.
Adaptive Boundary Control of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation Under Intermittent Sensing

Abstract:We study in this paper boundary stabilization, in the L2 sense, of the one-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation subject to intermittent sensing. We assume that we measure the state of this spatio-temporal equation on a given spatial subdomain during certain intervals of time, while we measure the state on the remaining spatial subdomain during the remaining intervals of time. As a result, we assign a feedback law at the boundary of the spatial domain and force to zero the value of the state at the junction of the two subdomains. Throughout the study, the destabilizing coefficient is assumed to be space-dependent and bounded but unknown. Adaptive boundary controllers are designed under different assumptions on the forcing term. In particular, when the forcing term is null, we guarantee global exponential stability of the origin. Furthermore, when the forcing term is bounded and admits a known upper bound, we guarantee input-to-state stability, and only global uniform ultimate boundedness is guaranteed when the upper bound is unknown. Numerical simulations are performed to illustrate our results

Continuous Suboptimal Control With Partial State Feedback

Abstract:It is well known that the classical optimal control method requires availability of all state variables of the controlled system for control feedback. This requires a measurable system, namely that all state variables may be obtained by measurement of sensors or by estimation of observers. However, some state variables in control feedback actually have a small effect on control performance. Neglecting these state variables does not greatly affect the performance of control. In this paper, we investigate a continuous suboptimal control method with partial-state feedback. First, the state variables with significant effect on the performance of control are determined using second-order sensitivity (i.e. second-order derivative of performance index with respect to control gain). Then, the suboptimal controller is designed utilizing only the determined state variables. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the application of the proposed control algorithm. It is shown that the relative importance of each state variable can be indicated clearly by the second-order sensitivity. The suboptimal control method presented is effective in reducing maximum responses of the structure. Furthermore, the continuous suboptimal control method may achieve almost the level of control effectiveness as the discrete suboptimal control method.

Abstract:Although the finite-time control theory and application have been studied very well in the literature, few results are concerned with the effect of sampled-data control. In this paper, first, the stability analysis of a chain of integrators under a discretized finite-time controller is given. Then, in the presence of disturbance, the robustness of the closed-loop system is also investigated. Based on a Lyapunov method, the ultimate bound for the steady states of the considered closed-loop system is estimated. Some simulation and examples are provided to verify the proposed theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, a Rossler-driving multistate intermittency is generated by a nonlinear system that contains controllable invariant subspaces. Intermittency-induced multiscroll attractor is found, and moreover, the control analysis is discussed, such as the number of attractors and the distance between laminar states can be easily adjusted by tuning some system parameters. The statistic behavior and power law distribution are also discussed, which reveal the regularities in the complex dynamics.

Abstract:Control of nonlinear dynamical systems is a complex and multifaceted process. Essential elements of many engineering systems include high fidelity physics-based modeling, offline trajectory planning, feedback control design, and data acquisition strategies to reduce uncertainties. This article proposes an optimization centric perspective which couples these elements in a cohesive framework. We introduce a novel use of hyper-differential sensitivity analysis to understand the sensitivity of feedback controllers to parametric uncertainty in physics-based models used for trajectory planning. These sensitivities provide a foundation to define an optimal experimental design which seeks to acquire data most relevant in reducing demand on the feedback controller. Our proposed framework is illustrated on the Zermelo navigation problem and a hypersonic trajectory control problem using data from NASA's X-43 hypersonic flight tests.
