Abstract:In this short article, we state a Hopf type lemma for fractional equations and the outline of its proof. We believe that it will become a powerful tool in applying the method of moving planes on fractional equations to obtain qualitative properties of solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we prove some results on the boundary behavior of solutions to fractional elliptic problems. Firstly, we establish a Hopf Lemma for solutions to some integro-differential equations. The main novelty of our result is that we do not assume any global condition on the sign of the solutions. Secondly, we show that non-trivial radial solutions cannot have infinitely many zeros accumulating at the boundary. We provide concrete examples to show that the results obtained are sharp.

Abstract:In this paper, we study qualitative properties of the fractional $p$-Laplacian. Specifically, we establish a Hopf type lemma for positive weak super-solutions of the fractional $p-$Laplacian equation with Dirichlet condition. Moreover, an optimal condition is obtained to ensure $(-\triangle)_p^s u\in C^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for smooth functions $u$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider different versions of the classical Hopf's boundary lemma in the setting of the fractional $p-$Laplacian for $p \geq 2$. We start by providing for a new proof to a Hopf's lemma based on comparison principles. Afterwards, we give a Hopf's result for sign-changing potential describing the behavior of the fractional normal derivative of solutions around boundary points. The main contribution here is that we do not need to impose a global condition on the sign of the solution. Applications of the main results to boundary point lemmas and non-local non-linear overdetermined problems are also provided.

Under nature structure conditions on f and g , we classify the positive solutions for the semi-linear elliptic system involving the fractional Laplacian by using the direct method of the moving spheres introducing by W. Chen, Y. Li, and R. Zhang ("A direct method of moving spheres on fractional order equations," J. Funct. Anal. , vol. 272, pp. 4131â€“4157, 2017). In the half space, we establish a Liouville type theorem without any assumption of integrability by combining the direct method of moving planes and moving spheres, which improves the result proved by W. Dai, Z. Liu, and G. Lu ("Liouville type theorems for PDE and IE systems involving fractional Laplacian on a half space," Potential Anal. , vol. 46, pp. 569â€“588, 2017).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a fractional equation with indefinite nonlinearities (-Delta)(alpha/2)u = a(x(1))f(u) for 0 < alpha < 2, where a and f are nondecreasing functions. We prove that there is no positive bounded solution. In particular, in the case a(x(1)) = x(1) and f(u) = u(P), this remarkably improves the result in [15] by extending the range of alpha from [1, 2) to (0, 2), due to the introduction of new ideas, which may be applied to solve many other similar problems.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the local and global well-posedness of the time fractional abstract Schrödinger type evolution equation on the Hilbert space and as an application, we prove the local and global well-posedness of the fractional dispersive equation with static potential under the only assumption that the symbol of P(D) behaves like a polynomial of highest degree m at infinity. In appendix, we also give the Holder regularities and the asymptotic behaviors of the mild solution to the linear time fractional abstract Schrödinger type equation. Because of the lack of the semigroup properties of the solution operators, we employ a strategy of proof based on the spectral theorem of the self-adjoint operators and the asymptotic behaviors of the Mittag-Leffler functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with a class of abstract fractional relaxation equations. We develop a new notion, named fractional ( alpha, beta) resolvent and derive some of its properties. By virtue of the obtained properties and the properties of general Mittag-Leffler function, we present some sufficient conditions to guarantee that the classical solutions of homogeneous and inhomogeneous fractional relaxation equations exist. An illustrative example is presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a fractional elliptic system with indefinite nonlinearities. We prove that every positive bounded solution of the system is monotone increasing along x1 direction by using the direct method of moving planes. Based on this monotonicity, we obtain the nonexistence of positive solutions and a Liouville type results for the fractional elliptic system. As an application, we get the Liouville type results for the fractional elliptic system with cubic nonlinearities.

Abstract:A generalized homotopy-based approach is developed to give highly accurate solutions of fractional differential equations. By introducing a scaling transformation, the computational domain of the nonlinear Riccati differential equations with fractional order changes from [0,+∞) to [0,1]. Analytical approximation of arbitrary accuracy is achieved, whose convergence is proved theoretically. The effectiveness and accuracy of our solution is strictly checked via error analysis. The proposed method is expected to be as a new and reliable analytical approach to give highly accurate solutions of strongly nonlinear problems in fractional calculus.
A frame approach for equations involving the fractional Laplacian

Abstract:Exceptionally elegant formulae exist for the fractional Laplacian operator applied to weighted classical orthogonal polynomials. We utilize these results to construct a solver, based on frame properties, for equations involving the fractional Laplacian of any power, $s \in (0,1)$, on an unbounded domain in one or two dimensions. The numerical method represents solutions in an expansion of weighted classical orthogonal polynomials as well as their unweighted counterparts with a specific extension to $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \in \{1,2\}$. We examine the frame properties of this family of functions for the solution expansion and, under standard frame conditions, derive an a priori estimate for the stationary equation. Moreover, we prove one achieves the expected order of convergence when considering an implicit Euler discretization in time for the fractional heat equation. We apply our solver to numerous examples including the fractional heat equation (utilizing up to a $6^\text{th}$-order Runge--Kutta time discretization), a fractional heat equation with a time-dependent exponent $s(t)$, and a two-dimensional problem, observing spectral convergence in the spatial dimension for sufficiently smooth data.

Abstract:In this Letter, a generalized fractional sub-equation method is proposed for solving fractional differential equations with variable coefficients. Being concise and straightforward, this method is applied to the space–time fractional Gardner equation with variable coefficients. As a result, many exact solutions are obtained including hyperbolic function solutions, trigonometric function solutions and rational solutions. It is shown that the considered method provides a very effective, convenient and powerful mathematical tool for solving many other fractional differential equations in mathematical physics.

Abstract:Nonlinear fractional difference equations are studied deeply and extensively by many scientists by using fixed-point theorems on different types of function spaces. In this study, we combine fixed-point theory with a set of falling fractional functions in a Banach space to prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions of a class of fractional difference equations. The most important part of this article is devoted to correcting a significant mistake made in the literature in using the power rule by providing further conditions for its validity. Also, we provide specific conditions under which difference equations have attractive solutions and the solutions are also asymptotically stable. Furthermore, we construct some fractional difference examples in order to illustrate the validity of the observed results.

Spectral Collocation Method for Fractional Differential/Integral Equations with Generalized Fractional Operator

Abstract:Generalized fractional operators are generalization of the Riemann-Liouville and Caputo fractional derivatives, which include Erdélyi-Kober and Hadamard operators as their special cases. Due to the complicated form of the kernel and weight function in the convolution, it is even harder to design high order numerical methods for differential equations with generalized fractional operators. In this paper, we first derive analytical formulas for α-th (α>0) order fractional derivative of Jacobi polynomials. Spectral approximation method is proposed for generalized fractional operators through a variable transform technique. Then, operational matrices for generalized fractional operators are derived and spectral collocation methods are proposed for differential and integral equations with different fractional operators. At last, the method is applied to generalized fractional ordinary differential equation and Hadamard-type integral equations, and exponential convergence of the method is confirmed. Further, based on the proposed method, a kind of generalized grey Brownian motion is simulated and properties of the model are analyzed.

Abstract:In this paper, we systematically study the pointwise regularity for distribution solutions of fractional equations. We obtain a series of interior pointwise Ck+[2s+α],2s+α−[2s+α] regularities when 2s+α is not an integer, Ck+2s+α,ln⁡L regularities and Ck+2s+α regularities when 2s+α is an integer for k≥0 under suitable conditions. These pointwise regularities seem to be more essential and characterize the solutions for fractional equations, and our proofs are more direct which can also provide optimal conditions for the above regularities. Furthermore, the classical regularity can be regarded as a consequence of pointwise regularity. The method we developed here can also be applied to many other equations, especially for the Poisson equations.

Abstract:This paper mainly deals with the monotonicity and Liouville type theorems of nonnegative solutions for a class of fully nonlinear fractional equations in half-space. Compared with serial works in [9,14,20], the restrictions on the monotonicity of nonlinear terms and the decay assumption on solutions are not necessary here. Moreover, the monotonicity result of nonnegative bounded solutions for corresponding cooperative systems is also derived. Specifically, we establish some new types of maximum principles for fully nonlinear fractional equations and systems in unbounded domains, which will play crucial roles in carrying on the method of moving planes.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study the dual fractional parabolic equation \begin{equation*} \partial^\alpha_t u(x,t)+(-\Delta)^s u(x,t) = f(u(x,t))\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ B_1(0)\times\R , \end{equation*} subject to the vanishing exterior condition. We show that for each $t\in\R$, the positive bounded solution $u(\cdot,t)$ must be radially symmetric and strictly decreasing about the origin in the unit ball in $\R^n$. To overcome the challenges caused by the dual non-locality of the operator $\partial^\alpha_t+(-\Delta)^s$, some novel techniques were introduced. Then we establish the Liouville theorem for the homogeneous equation in the whole space \begin{equation*}\label{B} \partial^\alpha_t u(x,t)+(-\Delta)^s u(x,t) = 0\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ \R^n\times\R . \end{equation*} We first prove a maximum principle in unbounded domains for anti-symmetric functions to deduce that $u(x,t)$ must be constant with respect to $x.$ Then it suffices for us to establish the Liouville theorem for the Marchaud fractional equation \begin{equation*} \partial^\alpha_t u(t) = 0\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ \R . \end{equation*} To circumvent the difficulties arising from the nonlocal and one-sided nature of the operator $\partial_t^\alpha$, we bring in some new ideas and simpler approaches. Instead of disturbing the anti-symmetric function, we employ a perturbation technique directly on the solution $u(t)$ itself. This method provides a more concise and intuitive route to establish the Liouville theorem for one-sided operators $\partial_t^\alpha$, including even more general Marchaud time derivatives.
