Abstract:We present a simple construction of an acute set of size $2^{d-1}+1$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for any dimension $d$. That is, we explicitly give $2^{d-1}+1$ points in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space with the property that any three points form an acute triangle. It is known that the maximal number of such points is less than $2^d$. Our result significantly improves upon a recent construction, due to Dmitriy Zakharov, with size of order $\varphi^d$ where $\varphi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618$ is the golden ratio.

Abstract:The Danzer--Grünbaum acute angles problem asks for the largest size of a set of points in ${\mathbb R}^d$ that determines only acute angles. Recently, the problem was essentially solved thanks to the results of the second author and of Gerencsér and Harangi: now, the lower and the upper bounds are $2^{d-1}+1$ and $2^d-1$, respectively. The lower-bound construction is surprisingly simple. In this note, we suggest the following variant of the problem, which is one way to "save" the problem. Put $F(\alpha) = \lim_{d\to \infty} f(d,\alpha)^{1/d}$, where $f(d,\alpha)$ is the largest set of points in ${\mathbb R}^d$ with no angle greater than $\alpha$. Then the question is to find $c:= \lim_{\alpha\to \pi/2^-}F(\alpha).$ Although one may expect that $c=2$ in view of the result of Gerencsér and Harangi, the best lower bound we could get is $c\ge \sqrt 2$. We also solve a related problem of Erdos and Füredi on the "stability" of the acute angles problem and refute another conjecture stated in the same paper.

Abstract:For three points $\vec{u}$,$\vec{v}$ and $\vec{w}$ in the $n$-dimensional space $\F_q^n$ over the finite field $\F_q$ of $q$ elements we give a natural interpretation of an acute angle triangle defined by this points. We obtain an upper bound on the size of a set $\cZ$ such that all triples of distinct points $\vec{u}, \vec{v}, \vec{w} \in \cZ$ define acute angle triangles. A similar question in the real space $\cR^n$ dates back to P. Erd{\H o}s and has been studied by several authors.

Abstract:We study the problem of acute triangulations of convex polyhedra and the space R^n. Here an acute triangulation is a triangulation into simplices whose dihedral angles are acute. We prove that acute triangulations of the n-cube do not exist for n>=4. Further, we prove that acute triangulations of the space R^n do not exist for n>= 5. In the opposite direction, in R^3, we present a construction of an acute triangulation of the cube, the regular octahedron and a non-trivial acute triangulation of the regular tetrahedron. We also prove nonexistence of an acute triangulation of R^4 if all dihedral angles are bounded away from pi/2.

Abstract:A set in $\mathbb R^d$ is called almost-equidistant if for any three distinct points in the set, some two are at unit distance apart. First, we give a short proof of the result of Bezdek and Lángi claiming that an almost-equidistant set lying on a $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere of radius $r$, where $r<1/\sqrt{2}$, has at most $2d+2$ points. Second, we prove that an almost-equidistant set $V$ in $\mathbb R^d$ has $O(d)$ points in two cases: if the diameter of $V$ is at most $1$ or if $V$ is a subset of a $d$-dimensional ball of radius at most $1/\sqrt{2}+cd^{-2/3}$, where $c<1/2$. Also, we present a new proof of the result of Kupavskii, Mustafa and Swanepoel that an almost-equidistant set in $\mathbb R^d$ has $O(d^{4/3})$ elements.

Abstract:The paper establishes a sharp quantitative estimate for the $(d-1)$-Hausdorff measure of the critical set of $\mathcal{C}^1$ vector-valued functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Additionally, we prove that for a generic $\mathcal{C}^2$ function where ``generic" is understood in the topological sense of Baire category, the critical set has a locally finite $(d-1)$-Hausdorff measure.

Abstract:We show that the hot spots conjecture of J. Rauch holds for acute triangles if one of the angles is not larger than $\pi/6$. More precisely, we show that the second Neumann eigenfunction on those acute triangles has no maximum or minimum inside the domain. We first simplify the problem by showing that absence of critical points on two sides implies no critical points inside a triangle. This result applies to any acute triangle and might help prove the conjecture for arbitrary acute triangles. Then we show that there are no critical points on two sides assuming one small angle. We also establish simplicity for the second Neumann eigenvalue for all non-equilateral triangles.

Abstract:The following result was proved by Barany in 1982: For every d >= 1 there exists c_d > 0 such that for every n-point set S in R^d there is a point p in R^d contained in at least c_d n^{d+1} - O(n^d) of the simplices spanned by S. We investigate the largest possible value of c_d. It was known that c_d <= 1/(2^d(d+1)!) (this estimate actually holds for every point set S). We construct sets showing that c_d <= (d+1)^{-(d+1)}, and we conjecture this estimate to be tight. The best known lower bound, due to Wagner, is c_d >= gamma_d := (d^2+1)/((d+1)!(d+1)^{d+1}); in his method, p can be chosen as any centerpoint of S. We construct n-point sets with a centerpoint that is contained in no more than gamma_d n^{d+1}+O(n^d) simplices spanned by S, thus showing that the approach using an arbitrary centerpoint cannot be further improved. We also prove that for every n-point set S in R^d there exists a (d-2)-flat that stabs at least c_{d,d-2} n^3 - O(n^2) of the triangles spanned by S, with c_{d,d-2}>=(1/24)(1- 1/(2d-1)^2). To this end, we establish an equipartition result of independent interest (generalizing planar results of Buck and Buck and of Ceder): Every mass distribution in R^d can be divided into 4d-2 equal parts by 2d-1 hyperplanes intersecting in a common (d-2)-flat.

Let $c_{d, \alpha}(n)$ be the largest integer $c$ such that any $n$-point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ in general position, satisfying $\text{diam}(P) < \alpha\sqrt[d]{n}$, contains an $c$-point convex independent subset. We determine the asymptotics of $c_{d, \alpha}(n)$ as $n \to \infty$ by showing the existence of positive constants $\beta = \beta(d, \alpha)$ and $\gamma = \gamma(d)$ such that $\beta n^{\frac{d-1}{d+1}} \le c_{d, \alpha}(n) \le \gamma n^{\frac{d-1}{d+1}}$ for $\alpha\geq 2$.

Abstract:One of the earliest results in enumerative combinatorial geometry is the following theorem of de Bruijn and Erdős: Every set of points $E$ in a projective plane determines at least $|E|$ lines, unless all the points are contained in a line. Motzkin and others extended the result to higher dimensions, who showed that every set of points $E$ in a projective space determines at least $|E|$ hyperplanes, unless all the points are contained in a hyperplane. Let $E$ be a spanning subset of a $d$-dimensional vector space. We show that, in the partially ordered set of subspaces spanned by subsets of $E$, there are at least as many $(d-k)$-dimensional subspaces as there are $k$-dimensional subspaces, for every $k$ at most $d/2$. This confirms the "top-heavy" conjecture of Dowling and Wilson for all matroids realizable over some field. The proof relies on the decomposition theorem package for $\ell$-adic intersection complexes.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new problem concerning additive properties of convex sets. Let $S= \{s_1 < \dots <s_n \}$ be a set of real numbers and let $D_i(S)= \{s_x-s_y: 1 \leq x-y \leq i\}$. We expect that $D_i(S)$ is large, with respect to the size of $S$ and the parameter $i$, for any convex set $S$. We give a construction to show that $D_3(S)$ can be as small as $n+2$, and show that this is the smallest possible size. On the other hand, we use an elementary argument to prove a non-trivial lower bound for $D_4(S)$, namely $|D_4(S)| \geq \frac{5}{4}n -1$. For sufficiently large values of $i$, we are able to prove a non-trivial bound that grows with $i$ using incidence geometry.

Nonempty interior of configuration sets via microlocal partition optimization

Abstract:We prove new results of Mattila-Sjölin type, giving lower bounds on Hausdorff dimensions of thin sets $E\subset \Bbb R^d$ ensuring that various $k$-point configuration sets, generated by elements of $E$, have nonempty interior. The dimensional thresholds in our previous work \cite{GIT20} were dictated by associating to a configuration function a family of generalized Radon transforms, and then optimizing $L^2$-Sobolev estimates for them over all nontrivial bipartite partitions of the $k$ points. In the current work, we extend this by allowing the optimization to be done locally over the configuration's incidence relation, or even microlocally over the conormal bundle of the incidence relation. We use this approach to prove Mattila-Sjölin type results for (i) areas of subtriangles determined by quadrilaterals and pentagons in a set $E\subset\Bbb R^2$; (ii) pairs of ratios of distances of 4-tuples in $\Bbb R^d$; and (iii) similarity classes of triangles in $\Bbb R^d$, as well as to (iv) give a short proof of Palsson and Romero Acosta's result on congruence classes of triangles in $\Bbb R^d$.

Abstract:We give the structure of discrete two-dimensional finite sets $${A, B \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2}$$ which are extremal for the recently obtained inequality $${|A + B| \ge (\frac{|A|}{m} + \frac{|B|}{n} - 1)(m + n - 1),}$$ where m and n are the minimum number of parallel lines covering A and B respectively. Via compression techniques, the above bound also holds when m is the maximal number of points of A contained in one of the parallel lines covering A and n is the maximal number of points of B contained in one of the parallel lines covering B. When m, n ≥ 2, we are able to characterize the case of equality in this bound as well. We also give the structure of extremal sets in the plane for the projection version of Bonnesen’s sharpening of the Brunn–Minkowski inequality: μ (A + B) ≥ (μ(A)/m + μ(B)/n)(m + n), where m and n are the lengths of the projections of A and B onto a line.
