Abstract:It is shown that there exists a dihedral acute triangulation of the three-dimensional cube. The method of constructing the acute triangulation is described, and symmetries of the triangulation are discussed.

Abstract:We study the problem of acute triangulations of convex polyhedra and the space R^n. Here an acute triangulation is a triangulation into simplices whose dihedral angles are acute. We prove that acute triangulations of the n-cube do not exist for n>=4. Further, we prove that acute triangulations of the space R^n do not exist for n>= 5. In the opposite direction, in R^3, we present a construction of an acute triangulation of the cube, the regular octahedron and a non-trivial acute triangulation of the regular tetrahedron. We also prove nonexistence of an acute triangulation of R^4 if all dihedral angles are bounded away from pi/2.

Abstract:The bonding and stability of MgSi and AlMgSi compounds relevant to AlMgSi alloys is investigated with the use of (L)APW+(lo) DFT calculations. We show that the $\beta$ and $\beta''$ phases found in the precipitation sequence are characterised by the presence of covalent bonds between Si-Si nearest neighbour pairs and covalent/ionic bonds between Mg-Si nearest neighbour pairs. We then investigate the stability of two recently discovered precipitate phases, U1 and U2, both containing Al in addition to Mg and Si. We show that both phases are characterised by tightly bound Al-Si networks, made possible by a transfer of charge from the Mg atoms.

Abstract:This tract has two purposes: to show what is known about the n-dimensional unit cubes and to demonstrate how Analysis, Algebra, Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Hyperbolic Geometry, Number Theory, can be applied to the study of them. The unit cubes, from any point of view, are among the most important and fascinating objects in an n-dimensional Euclidean space. However, our knowledge about them is still quite limited and many basic problems remain unsolved. In this Tract eight topics about the unit cubes are introduced: cross sections, projections, inscribed simplices, triangulations, 0/1 polytopes, Minkowski's conjecture, Furtwangler's conjecture, and Keller's conjecture. In particular the author demonstrates how deep analysis like log concave measure and the Brascamp-Lieb inequality can deal with the cross section problem, how Hyperbolic Geometry helps with the triangulation problem, how group rings can deal with Minkowski's conjecture and Furtwangler's conjecture, and how Graph Theory handles Keller's conjecture.

Abstract:As an introduction to the concept of "moduli space" we consider the moduli space of similarity classes of acute and right triangles in the plane. This has a map to the moduli space of elliptic curves which is onto and generically three-to-one. The reason is that from any acute or right triangle we can construct an elliptic curve, and every elliptic curve is isomorphic to one constructed this way.

Abstract:We provide a new geometric characterization for the spine of untwisted outer space of a right-angled Artin group, constructed by Charney, Stambaugh, and Vogtmann. We realize the spine as the natural simplicial complex associated with the category of spatial cube complexes, a new class of locally CAT(0) cube complexes with a simple definition in terms of hyperplane collapses.

Abstract:The polycube-based hexahedralization methods are robust to generate all-hex meshes without internal singularities. They avoid the difficulty to control the global singularity structure for a valid hexahedralization in frame-field based methods. To thoroughly utilize this advantage, we propose to use a frame field without internal singularities to guide the polycube construction. Theoretically, our method extends the vector fields associated with the polycube from exact forms to closed forms, which are curl free everywhere but may be not globally integrable. The closed forms give additional degrees of freedom to deal with the topological structure of high-genus models, and also provide better initial axis alignment for subsequent polycube generation. We demonstrate the advantages of our method on various models, ranging from genus-zero models to high-genus ones, and from single-boundary models to multiple-boundary ones.

Abstract:An n-simplex is said to be n-well-centered if its circumcenter lies in its interior. We introduce several other geometric conditions and an algebraic condition that can be used to determine whether a simplex is n-well-centered. These conditions, together with some other observations, are used to describe restrictions on the local combinatorial structure of simplicial meshes in which every simplex is well-centered. In particular, it is shown that in a 3-well-centered (2-well-centered) tetrahedral mesh there are at least 7 (9) edges incident to each interior vertex, and these bounds are sharp. Moreover, it is shown that, in stark contrast to the 2-dimensional analog, where there are exactly two vertex links that prevent a well-centered triangle mesh in R2, there are infinitely many vertex links that prohibit a well-centered tetrahedral mesh in R3.

Abstract:We analyze polyhedra composed of hexagons and triangles with three faces around each vertex, and their 3-regular planar graphs of edges and vertices, which we call "trihexes". Trihexes are analogous to fullerenes, which are 3-regular planar graphs whose faces are all hexagons and pentagons. Every trihex can be represented as the quotient of a hexagonal tiling of the plane under a group of isometries generated by rotations. Every trihex can also be described with either one or three "signatures": triples of numbers that describe the arrangement of the rotocenters of these rotations. Simple arithmetic rules relate the three signatures that describe the same trihex. We obtain a bijection between trihexes and equivalence classes of signatures as defined by these rules. Labeling trihexes with signatures allows us to put bounds on the number of trihexes for a given number of vertices v in terms of the prime factorization of v and to prove a conjecture concerning trihexes that have no "belts" of hexagons.

Abstract:Meshes composed of well-centered simplices have nice orthogonal dual meshes (the dual Voronoi diagram). This is useful for certain numerical algorithms that prefer such primal-dual mesh pairs. We prove that well-centered meshes also have optimality properties and relationships to Delaunay and minmax angle triangulations. We present an iterative algorithm that seeks to transform a given triangulation in two or three dimensions into a well-centered one by minimizing a cost function and moving the interior vertices while keeping the mesh connectivity and boundary vertices fixed. The cost function is a direct result of a new characterization of well-centeredness in arbitrary dimensions that we present. Ours is the first optimization-based heuristic for well-centeredness, and the first one that applies in both two and three dimensions. We show the results of applying our algorithm to small and large two-dimensional meshes, some with a complex boundary, and obtain a well-centered tetrahedralization of the cube. We also show numerical evidence that our algorithm preserves gradation and that it improves the maximum and minimum angles of acute triangulations created by the best known previous method.

Abstract:In this paper we present the construction of several aggregates of tetrahedra. Each construction is obtained by performing rotations on an initial set of tetrahedra that either (1) contains gaps between adjacent tetrahedra, or (2) exhibits an aperiodic nature. Following this rotation, gaps of the former case are "closed" (in the sense that faces of adjacent tetrahedra are brought into contact to form a "face junction") while translational and rotational symmetries are obtained in the latter case. In all cases, an angular displacement of {\beta} = arccos((3{\phi} - 1)/4) (or a closely related angle), where {\phi} is the golden ratio, is observed between faces of a junction. Additionally, the overall number of plane classes, defined as the number of distinct facial orientations in the collection of tetrahedra, is reduced following the transformation. Finally, we present several "curiosities" involving the structures discussed here with the goal of inspiring the reader's interest in constructions of this nature and their attending, interesting properties.

Signed projective cubes, a homomorphism point of view

Abstract:The (signed) projective cubes, as a special class of graphs closely related to the hypercubes, are on the crossroad of geometry, algebra, discrete mathematics and linear algebra. Defined as Cayley graphs on binary groups, they represent basic linear dependencies. Capturing the four-color theorem as a homomorphism target they show how mapping of discrete objects, namely graphs, may relate to special mappings of plane to projective spaces of higher dimensions. In this work, viewed as a signed graph, first we present a number of equivalent definitions each of which leads to a different development. In particular, the new notion of common product of signed graphs is introduced which captures both Cartesian and tensor products of graphs. We then have a look at some of their homomorphism properties. We first introduce an inverse technique for the basic no-homomorphism lemma, using which we show that every signed projective cube is of circular chromatic number 4. Then observing that the 4-color theorem is about mapping planar graphs into signed projective cube of dimension 2, we study some conjectures in extension of 4CT. Toward a better understanding of these conjectures we present the notion of extended double cover as a key operation in formulating the conjectures. With a deeper look into connection between some of these graphs and algebraic geometry, we discover that projective cube of dimension 4, widely known as the Clebsh graph, but also known as Greenwood-Gleason graph, is the intersection graph of the 16 straight lines of an algebraic surface known as Segre surface, which is a Del Pezzo surface of degree 4. We note that an algebraic surface known as the Clebsch surface is one of the most symmetric presentations of a cubic surface. Recall that each smooth cubic surface contains 27 lines. Hence, from hereafter, we believe, a proper name for this graph should be Segre graph.

Abstract:We propose and study the notion of triangles in smooth cubic hypersurfaces. We prove that for a generic cubic n -fold X ( ), the variety of triangles in X is of dimension . We show that on a generic cubic n -fold, the triangles with a given edge can be parametrized by an open subset of a quintic hypersurface in . In the case of a generic cubic threefold, we show that the locus of the opposite vertices for triangles with a given edge form a curve of degree 10. As a corollary, we get an interesting enumerative result on the number of triangles satisfying some restrictions.

Abstract:We construct algebras from rhombohedral tilings of Euclidean space obtained as projections of certain cubical complexes. We show that these ‘Cubist algebras’ satisfy strong homological properties, such as Koszulity and quasi-heredity, reflecting the combinatorics of the tilings. We construct derived equivalences between Cubist algebras associated to local mutations in tilings. We recover as a special case the Rhombal algebras of Michael Peach and make a precise connection to weight 2 blocks of symmetric groups.

Abstract:Flips of diagonals in colored triangle-free triangulations of a convex polygon are interpreted as moves between two adjacent chambers in a certain graphic hyperplane arrangement. Properties of geodesics in the associated flip graph are deduced. In particular, it is shown that: (1) every diagonal is flipped exactly once in a geodesic between distinguished pairs of antipodes; (2) the number of geodesics between these antipodes is equal to twice the number of Young tableaux of a truncated shifted staircase shape.

Abstract:Abstract We introduced a novel method for visualizing large diophantine datasets and in particular found that mapping the known integer triplets $$\{a,b,c\}$$ { a , b , c } solving either equations of the type $$a^3+b^3+c^3=d$$ a 3 + b 3 + c 3 = d or $$a^3+b^3+c^3=d^3$$ a 3 + b 3 + c 3 = d 3 on certain proper subgroups of the circle group exposed a very clear breaking in their symmetry and a strongly non-ergodic distribution of the solutions of sums of three cubes that had never been described before. This method could be further applied to a larger diversity of diophantine problems, informing both number-theoretical conjectures and novel methods in computer sciences on the way, along with paving the road for specific uses of machine learning in exploring diophantine datasets with possible applications in cryptography among others.

Abstract:We construct a sphere-homeomorphic flexible self-intersection free polyhedron in Euclidean 3-space such that all its dihedral angles change during some flex of this polyhedron. The constructed polyhedron has 26 vertices, 72 edges and 48 faces. To study its properties, we use symbolic computations in the Wolfram Mathematica software system.

Abstract:This paper proves the following statement: If a convex body can form a fivefold translative tiling in $\mathbb{E}^3$, it must be a parallelotope, a hexagonal prism, a rhombic dodecahedron, an elongated dodecahedron, a truncated octahedron, a cylinder over a particular octagon, or a cylinder over a particular decagon, where the octagon and the decagon are fivefold translative tiles in $\mathbb{E}^2$. Furthermore, it presents an example of multiple tiles in $\mathbb{E}^3$ with multiplicity at most 10 which is neither a parallelohedron nor a cylinder.

Abstract:We consider the problem of determining the length of the shortest paths between points on the surfaces of tetrahedra and cubes. Our approach parallels the concept of Alexandrov's star unfolding but focuses on specific polyhedra and uses their symmetries to develop coordinate based formulae. We do so by defining a coordinate system on the surfaces of these polyhedra. Subsequently, we identify relevant regions within each polyhedron's nets and develop formulae which take as inputs the coordinates of the points and produce as an output the distance between the two points on the polyhedron being discussed.

Abstract:The boundary rigidity problem is a classical question from Riemannian geometry: if $(M, g)$ is a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, is the geometry of $M$ determined up to isometry by the metric $d_g$ induced on the boundary $\partial M$? In this paper, we consider a discrete version of this problem: can we determine the combinatorial type of a finite cube complex from its boundary distances? As in the continuous case, reconstruction is not possible in general, but one expects a positive answer under suitable contractibility and non-positive curvature conditions. Indeed, in two dimensions Haslegrave gave a positive answer to this question when the complex is a finite quadrangulation of the disc with no internal vertices of degree less than $4$. We prove a $3$-dimensional generalisation of this result: the combinatorial type of a finite CAT(0) cube complex with an embedding in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be reconstructed from its boundary distances. Additionally, we prove a direct strengthening of Haslegrave's result: the combinatorial type of any finite 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex can be reconstructed from its boundary distances.
