Abstract:The PANDA detection system at FAIR, Germany, is designed to study antiproton-proton annihilations, in order to investigate among others the realm of charm-meson states and glueballs, which has still much to reveal. The yet unknown properties of this field are to be unraveled through studying QCD phenomena in the non-perturbative regime. The multipurpose PANDA detector will be capable of tracking, calorimetry, and particle identification, and is foreseen to run at high luminosities providing average reaction rates up to 20 Million interactions/s. The envisaged physics program requires measurements of photons and charged particles with excellent energy, position, and time resolutions. The electromagnetic calorimeter (EMC) will serve as one of the basic components of the detector setup and comprises cooled Lead-Tungstate (PbWO4) crystals. This paper presents the mechanical design of the Forward End-cap calorimeter and analyses the response of this detector component in conjunction with the full EMC and the complete PANDA detector. The simulation studies are focused on the performance of the planned EMC with respect to the energy and spatial resolution of the reconstructed photons. Results of the Monte Carlo simulations, excluding very low-energy photons, have been validated by data obtained from a prototype calorimeter and shown to fulfil the requirements imposed by the PANDA physics program.

Abstract:This documents describes the technical design and the expected performance of the Barrel DIRC detector for the PANDA experiment. The Barrel DIRC will provide hadronic charged particle identification in the polar angle range of $22^\circ$ to $140^\circ$ for particle momenta between 0.5 GeV/c and 3.5 GeV/c. The design is based on the successful BaBar DIRC with several key improvements. The performance and system cost were optimized in detailed detector simulations and validated with full system prototypes using particle beams at GSI and CERN. The final design meets or exceeds the PID goal of clean $\pi/K$ separation with at least 3 standard deviations over the entire phase space of charged kaons in the Barrel DIRC.

Abstract:Two special calorimeters are foreseen for the instrumentation of the very forward region of an ILC or CLIC detector; a luminometer (LumiCal) designed to measure the rate of low angle Bhabha scattering events with a precision better than 10$^{-3}$ at the ILC and 10$^{-2}$ at CLIC, and a low polar-angle calorimeter (BeamCal). The latter will be hit by a large amount of beamstrahlung remnants. The intensity and the spatial shape of these depositions will provide a fast luminosity estimate, as well as determination of beam parameters. The sensors of this calorimeter must be radiation-hard. Both devices will improve the e.m. hermeticity of the detector in the search for new particles. Finely segmented and very compact electromagnetic calorimeters will match these requirements. Due to the high occupancy, fast front-end electronics will be needed. Monte Carlo studies were performed to investigate the impact of beam-beam interactions and physics background processes on the luminosity measurement, and of beamstrahlung on the performance of BeamCal, as well as to optimise the design of both calorimeters. Dedicated sensors, front-end and ADC ASICs have been designed for the ILC and prototypes are available. Prototypes of sensor planes fully assembled with readout electronics have been studied in electron beams.

Abstract:The T2K experiment studies oscillations of an off-axis muon neutrino beam between the J-PARC accelerator complex and the Super-Kamiokande detector. Special emphasis is placed on measuring the mixing angle theta_13 by observing electron neutrino appearance via the sub-dominant muon neutrino to electron neutrino oscillation, and searching for CP violation in the lepton sector. The experiment includes a sophisticated, off-axis, near detector, the ND280, situated 280 m downstream of the neutrino production target in order to measure the properties of the neutrino beam and to understand better neutrino interactions at the energy scale below a few GeV. The data collected with the ND280 are used to study charged- and neutral-current neutrino interaction rates and kinematics prior to oscillation, in order to reduce uncertainties in the oscillation measurements by the far detector. A key element of the near detector is the ND280 electromagnetic calorimeter (ECal), consisting of active scintillator bars sandwiched between lead sheets and read outwith multi-pixel photon counters (MPPCs). The ECal is vital to the reconstruction of neutral particles, and the identification of charged particle species. The ECal surrounds the Pi-0 detector (P0D) and the tracking region of the ND280, and is enclosed in the former UA1/NOMAD dipole magnet. This paper describes the design, construction and assembly of the ECal, as well as the materials from which it is composed. The electronic and data acquisition (DAQ) systems are discussed, and performance of the ECal modules, as deduced from measurements with particle beams, cosmic rays, the calibration system, and T2K data, is described.

Abstract:The 2022 Snowmass Community Summer Study consisted of two years of engagement with the particle physics community to craft a US particle physics strategy for the next decade, culminating in the 2022 Snowmass Book. This Report of the Topical Group on Calorimetry forms the basis for a small section of the Snowmass Book dealing with the community's vision for calorimetry going forward. It is the distillation of ideas put forth in public meetings and numerous white papers already freely available. The Report describes particle flow and dual readout approaches, integration of precision timing, and trends in calorimetric materials, and highlights key research directions for the next decade.

Abstract:To address the challenges of providing high performance calorimetry in future hadron collider experiments under conditions of high luminosity and high radiation (FCChh environments), we are conducting R&D on advanced calorimetry techniques suitable for such operation, based on scintillation and wavelength-shifting technologies and photosensor (SiPM and SiPM-like) technology. In particular, we are focusing our attention on ultra-compact radiation hard EM calorimeters, based on modular structures (RADiCAL modules) consisting of alternating layers of very dense absorber and scintillating plates, read out via radiation hard wavelength shifting (WLS) solid fiber or capillary elements to photosensors positioned either proximately or remotely, depending upon their radiation tolerance. The RADiCAL modules provide the capability to measure simultaneously and with high precision the position, energy and timing of EM showers. This paper provides an overview of the instrumentation and photosensor R&D associated with the RADiCAL program.

Abstract:Future HEP experiments present stringent challenges to calorimeter materials in radiation tolerance, time response and project cost. The 2019 report of the DOE Basic Research Needs Study on High Energy Physics Detector Research and Development points out three priority research directions for future calorimetry. Following these research directions letters of interest were submitted to the Snowmass organized by the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physics Society. This report summarizes materials to be developed in the form of inorganic, liquid (oil- and water-based), and plastic scintillators and wavelength shifters to advance HEP calorimetry to face the challenges in radiation hardness, fast timing, and cost-effectiveness. Some of these materials may also find applications for future HEP time-of-flight system, and beyond HEP in nuclear physics, hard X-ray imaging and medical instruments.

Preliminary Conceptual Design about the CEPC Calorimeters

Abstract:The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) as a Higgs factory was proposed in September 2013. The preliminary conceptual design report was completed in 2015.1 The CEPC detector design was using International Linear Collider Detector — ILD2 as an initial baseline. The CEPC calorimeters, including the high granularity electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and the hadron calorimeter (HCAL), are designed for precise energy measurements of electrons, photons, taus and hadronic jets. The basic resolution requirements for the ECAL and HCAL are about 16%[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] (GeV) and 50%[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] (GeV), respectively. To fully exploit the physics potential of the Higgs, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and related Standard Model processes, the jet energy resolution is required to reach 3%–4%, or 30%/[Formula: see text] (GeV) at energies below about 100 GeV. To achieve the required performance, a Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) — oriented calorimetry system is being considered as the baseline design. The CEPC ECAL detector options include silicon–tungsten or scintillator–tungsten structures with analog readout, while the HCAL detector options have scintillator or gaseous detector as the active sensor and iron as the absorber. Some latest R&D studies about ECAL and HCAL within the CEPC working group is also presented.

Abstract:We present the performance of a full-length prototype of the ALICE Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). The detector is composed of a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic sampling calorimeter with longitudinal and transverse segmentation (FoCal-E) of about 20$X_0$ and a hadronic copper-scintillating-fiber calorimeter (FoCal-H) of about 5$\lambda_{\rm int}$. The data were taken between 2021 and 2023 at the CERN PS and SPS beam lines with hadron (electron) beams up to energies of 350 (300) GeV. Regarding FoCal-E, we report a comprehensive analysis of its response to minimum ionizing particles across all pad layers. The longitudinal shower profile of electromagnetic showers is measured with a layer-wise segmentation of 1$X_0$. As a projection to the performance of the final detector in electromagnetic showers, we demonstrate linearity in the full energy range, and show that the energy resolution fulfills the requirements for the physics needs. Additionally, the performance to separate two-showers events was studied by quantifying the transverse shower width. Regarding FoCal-H, we report a detailed analysis of the response to hadron beams between 60 and 350 GeV. The results are compared to simulations obtained with a Geant4 model of the test beam setup, which in particular for FoCal-E are in good agreement with the data. The energy resolution of FoCal-E was found to be lower than 3% at energies larger than 100 GeV. The response of FoCal-H to hadron beams was found to be linear, albeit with a significant intercept that is about factor 2 larger than in simulations. Its resolution, which is non-Gaussian and generally larger than in simulations, was quantified using the FWHM, and decreases from about 16% at 100 GeV to about 11% at 350 GeV. The discrepancy to simulations, which is particularly evident at low hadron energies, needs to be further investigated.

Abstract:Currently, a neutral beam injection (NBI) system prototype with a 200-keV negative ion source, called the negative neutral beam injection (NNBI) system, is under construction for the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor Project. In the NNBI system, the calorimeter is an extremely important high-heat-flux component, and its panels have to withstand a heat flux density of up to dozens of MW/m(2) under some extreme conditions; thus, its efficient heat transfer enhancement design and the corresponding supporting structural design are most important, especially under the condition of a 3600-s long pulse. According to the detailed design requirements of the NNBI system, an overall design scheme of the calorimeter based on the heat transfer enhancement structure of the swirl tube (SW for short) is proposed in this paper. By using the gas-liquid two-phase flow boiling model and the supporting structure's finite element model, the heat transfer performance of the heat exchange module, the mass flow distribution and pressure drop of the entire cooling circuit of the component, and the strength of the support structure are evaluated to verify the feasibility of the design scheme. Finally, based on the proposed design scheme, the detailed design of the temperature monitor system, which has high reliability and economy, is completed. This research provides important theoretical and engineering support for the structural development of the calorimeter for the NNBI verification prototype and will also provide references for the design and development of other internal components of large-scale fusion devices.

Abstract:High performance calorimetry conducted at future hadron colliders, such as the FCC-hh, poses a significant challenge for applying current detector technologies due to unprecedented beam luminosities and radiation fields. Solutions include developing scintillators that are capable of separating events at the sub-fifty picosecond level while also maintaining performance after extreme and constant neutron and ionizing radiation exposure. The RADiCAL is an approach that incorporates radiation tolerant materials in a sampling 'shashlik' style calorimeter configuration, using quartz capillaries filled with organic liquid or polymer-based wavelength shifters embedded in layers of tungsten plates and LYSO crystals. This novel design intends to address the Priority Research Directions (PRD) for calorimetry listed in the DOE Basic Research Needs (BRN) workshop for HEP Instrumentation. Here we report preliminary results from an experimental run at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility in June 2022. These tests demonstrate that the RADiCAL concept is capable of < 50 ps timing resolution.

Abstract:We present the research and development work of the first version of a 6*6 array of silicon pad detectors, carried out in India, for the proposed forward calorimeter (FOCAL) as part of the ALICE collaboration upgrade program at CERN. The primary motivation is to develop a large area silicon pad array realizing the challenging requirements of high-energy physics experiments such as low leakage current, high breakdown voltage and evaluate its performance as an active layer in the prototype silicon tungsten (Si-W) electromagnetic (EM) calorimeter. Towards these goals, a 36-pad silicon sensor with an individual pad size of 1 cm2 is designed on a 4-inch high resistivity N-type wafer and fabricated at Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore. The sensors have been used to assemble the prototype Si-W calorimeters and were successfully tested with high-energy particle beams. The design and development of the large area silicon sensor and its characterization using radioactive sources in the laboratory and high-energy particle beams are reported in this paper.

Abstract:The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a proposing electron-positron collider in China, which aims for generating high center-of-mass energy colliding above 250 GeV. The high-granularity electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is included in a calorimeter system, which is mainly responsible for the measurement of photon. A particle flow algorithm (PFA)-based ECAL solution will utilize about 400k channels/m3. Here, we present the design and development status of readout electronics based on SPIROC2b for the CEPC ECAL with high-granularity scintillants and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The readout electronics consists of front-end electronics (FEE), data interface (DIF) board, and data acquisition (DAQ) board. The front-end board (FEB) carries SiPMs (S12571-010P), scintillants (PSD), and FEB application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) (SPIROC2b). Two electronics were designed in this paper, one is for ASIC functionality and performance only, and the other is used as a single layer of a further prototype of ECAL. Electronic test and cosmic ray test have been done to electronics. The results indicate that a charge dynamic from 62 fC to 300 pC at S/N = 2 is successfully achieved, and the minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) are separated from the pedestal.

Abstract:The EIC will deliver collisions of electrons with protons and nuclei at a wide variety of energies and at luminosities up to 1000 times higher than HERA. Precise measurement of both the scattered electron and the hadronic final state is crucial for the physics of the EIC, necessitating unique designs for the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters in the backward, central, and forward regions. To ensure maximal containment of energy and acceptance for the required physics processes, the ePIC detector employs calorimetry over almost the entire polar angle. These proceedings provide an overview of the current calorimeter designs being employed in ePIC.

Abstract:The MAPS prototype of the proposed ALICE Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) is the highest granularity electromagnetic calorimeter, with 39 million pixels of $30 \times 30 \mu$m$^{2}$. Particle showers can be studied with unprecedented detail with this prototype. Electromagnetic showers at energies between 2 GeV and 244 GeV have been studied and compared to Geant4 simulations. Simulation models can be tested in more detail than ever before and the differences observed between FoCal data and Geant4 simulations illustrates that improvements in electromagnetic models are still possible.

Abstract:Micro-pattern gaseous detectors (MPGDs) are a promising readout technology for hadronic calorimeters (HCAL) thanks to their good space resolution, longevity and rate capability. We describe the development of a HCAL based on MPGDs for an experiment at the proposed Muon Collider. The design of a semi-digital MPGD-HCAL is shown and its performance is calculated with Monte Carlo simulations with high-energy pions, showing an energy resolution down to 8\% for \SI{80}{\giga\eV} pions. We also present the performance of twelve MPGD prototypes with different technologies (MicroMegas, $\mu$-RWELL and RPWELL) assembled and operated in test beam first with high-energy muons and later with pions in a hadronic calorimeter prototype of $\sim1\,\lambda_\text{I}$ length; the detectors have a good response uniformity (lower than 17\%) and space resolution and their performance in the calorimeter shows very good agreement with the Monte Carlo shower calculation.

Abstract:The FoCal is a high-granularity forward calorimeter to be installed as an ALICE upgrade subsystem during the LHC Long Shutdown 3 and take data during the LHC Run 4. The FoCal detector, covering a pseudorapidity interval of $3.2 < \eta < 5.8$, extends the ALICE physics program with the capability to investigate gluon Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) in the low-$x$ regime, down to $x \approx 10^{-6}$. FoCal measurements will provide experimental constraints for PDFs in a region of phasespace where experimental data is scarce, as well as enable the study of non-linear QCD effects like gluon saturation. The FoCal detector consists of two components. The highly-granular Si+W electromagnetic calorimeter (FoCal-E) with pad and pixel longitudinal and transverse segmented readout layers provides high spatial resolution for discriminating between isolated photons and decay photon pairs. The hadronic calorimeter (FoCal-H) is constructed from copper capillary tubes filled with scintillator fibers and is used for isolation energy measurement and jets. With this detector design, FoCal is capable of measuring direct photons, jets, and the photo-production of vector mesons such as the $J/\psi$ in p$-$Pb and Pb$-$Pb ultra-peripheral collisions. In addition, correlations of different probes can be studied, including $\gamma$$-$jet, jet$-$jet and $\pi^{0} - \pi^{0}$ correlations. These measurements will place stringent constraints to various theoretical models incorporating non-linear QCD effects. This contribution gives an overview of the FoCal physics program. Also, recent experimental results of ever-improving prototypes of the detector, which were tested at the Test Beam facilities of CERN in the years 2021$-$2023, as well as simulation studies showcasing the robustness of the detector design and its physics potential are presented.

Abstract:The calorimeter system of LHCb is subdivided into four sub-detectors which ensure its longitudinal segmentation: a Scintillator Pad Detector (SPD) followed by a Preshower (PS) and then an electromagnetic (ECAL) an hadronic (HCAL) calorimeter. After a description of these detectors, procedures developed to calibrate their response are discussed together with the degradation of response observed due to the harsh conditions (hard radiation and high current). First results on the calorimeter performance over the two most productive years of physics data taking, 2011 and 2012 are given.
