Storyline attribution of human influence on a record-breaking spatially compounding flood-heat event

Abstract:Attribution of compound events informs preparedness for emerging hazards with disproportionate impacts. However, the task remains challenging because space-time interactions among extremes and uncertain dynamic changes are not satisfactorily addressed in the well-established attribution framework. For attributing the 2020 record-breaking spatially compounding flood-heat event in China, we conduct a storyline attribution analysis by designing simulation experiments via a weather forecast model, quantifying component-based attributable changes, and comparing with historical flow analogs. We quantify that given the large-scale circulation, anthropogenic influence to date has exacerbated the extreme Mei-yu rainfall in the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River during June–July 2020 by ~6.5% and warmed the co-occurring seasonal extreme heat in South China by ~1°C. Our projections show a further intensification of the compound event by the end of this century, with moderate emissions making the rainfall totals ~14% larger and the season ~2.1°C warmer in South China than the 2020 status.

Impact of Anthropogenic Climate Change on the East Asian Summer Monsoon

Abstract:The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is important for bringing rainfall to large areas of China. Historically, variations in the EASM have had major impacts including flooding and drought. The authors present an analysis of the impact of anthropogenic climate change on EASM rainfall in eastern China using a newly updated attribution system. The results suggest that anthropogenic climate change has led to an overall decrease in total monsoon rainfall over the past 65 years and an increased number of dry days. However, the model also predicts that anthropogenic forcings have caused the most extreme heavy rainfall events to become shorter in duration and more intense. With the potential for future changes in aerosol and greenhouse gas emissions, historical trends in monsoon rainfall may not be indicative of future changes, although extreme rainfall is projected to increase over East Asia with continued warming in the region.

Abstract:Compared with individual extreme events, compound events have more severe impacts on humans and the natural environment. This study explores the change in severity of compound extreme high temperature and drought/rain events (CHTDE/CHTRE) and associated influencing factors. The CHTDE and CHTRE intensified in most areas of China in summer (June–July August) during 1961–2014. Under global warming, the increased water-holding capacity of the atmosphere and the decreased relative humidity led to an increase in the severity of CHTDE. The severity of CHTRE is increased because of enhanced transient water vapor convergence and convective motion. Anthropogenic climate change, especially greenhouse gas forcing, which contributes 90% to the linear change in the severity of CHTDE and CHTRE, is identified as the dominant factor affecting the severity of CHTDE in China. In addition, the historical natural forcing (hist-NAT) may be related to the interannual-to-decadal variability in the severity of CHTDE/CHTRE.

Abstract:The "21·7" Henan extreme rainfall event (HNER) caused severe damage and many fatalities. The daily precipitation during this event (from 1200 UTC on July 19, 2021 to 1200 UTC on July 20, 2021) was 552.5 mm and the maximum hourly precipitation was 201.9 mm (at 0900 UTC on July 20, 2021). Previous studies have suggested that an evaluation of the role of anthropogenic climate change in extreme rainfall events is crucial in disaster prevention and mitigation under the current global climate crisis. We examined the changes in the coverage and intensity of extreme rainfall during the "21·7" HNER event under anthropogenic climate change using a set of convective permitting simulations. Our results showed that the regional-average magnitude of the 48-h accumulated rainfall during the "21·7" HNER was increased by 5.7% (95% confidence interval: 4%–11%), which is in agreement with the Clausius–Clapeyron (CC) rate, while the area of extreme rainfall (≥500 mm) increased by 29.9% (95% confidence interval: 21%–40%) as a result of anthropogenic climate change over the Henan region during the late 20th century. Anthropogenic climate change has led to a warm moist tongue over the target region, which has increased the column-integrated water vapor content and induced an anomalous cyclone–anticyclone pair. Anthropogenic warming has caused stronger southerly and southeasterly winds, leading to stronger convergence in the lower troposphere, stronger updrafts in the mid-troposphere and stronger divergent winds in the upper levels. These effects have all contributed to the increase in rainfall. These results enhance our understanding of the dynamic effects of anthropogenic warming on the "21·7" HNER and provide additional evidence that anthropogenic warming increased the magnitude of the "21·7" HNER in China.

Abstract:Extreme persistent rainfall poses serious impacts on human and natural systems, predominately through its related hydrogeological disasters. Due to sustained heavy downpours, the summer of 2020 was the second wettest on record over Northeast Indian subcontinent since 1901. Here, we find that this orographically anchored extreme rainfall event was largely associated with the anomalous anticyclone (AAC) over the Indo‐Northwest Pacific region and La Niña‐induced Walker circulation intensification. The overall effect of anthropogenic forcings contributed little to the occurrence probability of this event, because the warming and wetting effects of greenhouse gases were almost negated by anthropogenic aerosols. Climate models project a prominent increasing trend of such extreme event under future greenhouse‐induced warming due to increase in atmospheric water vapor and 2020‐like AAC frequency. Our findings thus call for scaling up climate change adaptation efforts for increasingly extreme persistent rainfall in highly‐populated but low‐resilience South Asian developing countries.

Abstract:The effect of anthropogenic warming on extreme rainfall events is a hot topic in this era of global warming, and increasing attention is being paid to its impact at regional and local scales. We explore the localized response of precipitation during the high-impact "23·7" extreme rainfall event in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region under anthropogenic warming using ensemble convective-permitting simulations. We identify two sub-regions with opposite responses: anthropogenic warming decreased (increased) precipitation in the northern (southern) sub-region of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei area. Further analysis shows that anthropogenic warming intensified the remnant of Typhoon Dusuari and increased rainfall in its inner core but decreased rainfall in the peripheral spiral rain band. These are the main reasons for the locally inconsistent responses of extreme rainfall to anthropogenic warming. We emphasize that anthropogenic warming, as a global background signal, directly affects the intensity and structure of specific weather systems rather than local precipitation. A high-impact extreme rainfall event, therefore, cannot always be simply attributed to climate warming enhancing precipitation at every location in a particular region.

Abstract:A record-breaking extreme precipitation event that occurred in July 2021 over Henan Province is investigated through observations and reanalysis data. Meanwhile, future extreme precipitation conditions are projected through an ensemble projection model using climate model outputs as input. The long duration, the wide range of influence, the extensive amount of accumulated precipitation, and the high intensity of precipitation are the four major characteristics of this event. Further, the physical causes of this event are explored. First of all, the abnormal northward movement of the western North Pacific Subtropical High is quite significant. Secondly, two slow-moving typhoons are found, which intensify inland moisture transport. Thirdly, after encountering the windward slope, the water vapor is violently lifted and continuously accumulated. Future projections of multiple extreme indices show that more extreme precipitation conditions are expected across the entire Henan Province. In addition, the contribution of various sources to the uncertainty of the ensemble projection are quantified. The global climate model is the primary contributing factor. Meanwhile, the effects explained by the interactive effects between global climate models and shared social-economic pathways cannot be neglected. Our study has constructed an analysis framework called the "Four-in-One" (spatial–temporal feature analysis, causal analysis, future projection, and uncertainty quantification). It provides further insight into changes in local extreme precipitation conditions. The overall framework of this study is equally applicable to investigating other types of extreme events.

Abstract:Abstract In October 2020, Central Vietnam was struck by heavy rain resulting from a sequence of 5 tropical depressions and typhoons. The immense amount of water led to extensive flooding and landslides that killed more than 200 people, injured more than 500 people, and caused direct damages valued at approximately 1.2 billion USD. Here, we quantify how the intensity of the precipitation leading to such exceptional impacts is attributable to anthropogenic climate change. First, we define the event as the regional maximum of annual maximum 15-day average rainfall (Rx15day). We then analyse the trend in Rx15day over Central Vietnam from the observations and simulations in the PRIMAVERA and CORDEX-CORE ensembles, which pass our evaluation tests, by applying the generalised extreme value (GEV) distribution in which location and scale parameters exponentially covary with increasing global temperatures. Combining these observations and model results, we find that the 2020 event, occurring about once every 80 years (at least 17 years), has not changed in either probability of occurrence (a factor 1.0, ranging from 0.4 to 2.4) or intensity (0%, ranging from −8 to +8%) in the present climate in comparison with early-industrial climate. This implies that the effect of human-induced climate change contributing to this persistent extreme rainfall event is small compared to natural variability. However, given the scale of damage of this hazard, our results underline that more investment in disaster risk reduction for this type of rainfall-induced flood hazard is of importance, even independent of the effect of anthropogenic climate change. Moreover, as both observations and model simulations will be extended with the passage of time, we encourage more climate change impact investigations on the extreme in the future that help adaptation and mitigation plans and raise awareness in the country.

Abstract:Extreme rainfall events are rare in inland arid regions, but have exhibited an increasing trend in recent years, causing many casualties and substantial socioeconomic losses. A series of heavy rains that began on July 31st, 2018, battered the Hami prefecture of eastern Xinjiang, China for four days. These rains sparked devastating floods, caused 20 deaths, eight missing, and the evacuation of about 5500 people. This study examines the extreme rainfall event in a historical context and explores the anthropogenic causes based on analysis of multiple datasets (i.e., the observed daily data, the global climate models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1, and the satellite cloud data) and several statistical techniques. Results show that this extraordinarily heavy rainfall was due mainly to the abnormal weather system (e.g., the abnormal subtropical high) that transported abundant water vapor from the Indian Ocean and the East China Sea crossed the high mountains and formed extreme rainfall in Hami prefecture, causing the reservoir to break and form a flood event with treat loss, which is a typical example of a comprehensive analysis of the extreme rainfall event in summer in Northwest China. Also, the fraction of attributable risk (FAR) value was 1.00 when the 2018 July–August RX1day (11.52 mm) was marked as the threshold, supporting the claim of a significant anthropogenic influence on the risk of this extreme rainfall. The results offer insights into the variability of precipitation extremes in arid areas contributing to better manage water-related disasters.

Abstract:Extreme climatic changes frequently have more serious impacts on nature and human society than do changes in the mean value under global climate change. However, extreme climatic events, particularly extreme precipitation, show complex variability because of the effects of natural and human impacts. Taking the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in China as a case study, the characteristics and trends of extreme daily precipitation events from 1961 to 2012 were investigated in terms of their frequency and intensity. The extreme precipitation events at 30-year and 50-year return periods were analyzed by assuming a generalized Pareto distribution. The detection and attribution of extreme precipitation changes were conducted via the simultaneous evaluation of gradual and abrupt changes. The results indicate a similar pattern of extreme daily precipitation events during different return periods, but the differences in the daily precipitation extremes are quite larger between stations. Thus, regional analyses of different return periods are needed to minimize the risks and losses from extreme precipitation events. We also found reversed trends of extreme daily precipitation events in the YRD when assuming gradual and abrupt changes over the period of 1961–2012. The trend attribution analyses showed that a large-scale monsoon might play a critical role in the intensity and frequency of extreme daily precipitation events in the YRD. However, local factors (e.g., typhoons and urbanization) might play an important role in extreme precipitation changes under a monsoon background.

Abstract:Understanding the driving factors for precipitation extremes matters for adaptation and mitigation measures against the changing hydrometeorological hazards in Yangtze River basin, a habitable area that provides water resources for domestic, farming, and industrial needs. However, the region is naturally subject to major floods linked to monsoonal heavy precipitation during May–September. This study aims to quantify anthropogenic influences on the changing risk of 2-week-long precipitation extremes such as the July 2019 extreme cases, as well as events of shorter durations, over the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River basin (MLYRB). Precipitation extremes with different durations ranging from 1-day to 14-days maximum precipitation accumulations are investigated. Gridded daily precipitations based on nearly 2,400 meteorological stations across China are used to define maximum accumulated precipitation extremes over the MLYRB in July during 1961–2019. Attribution analysis is conducted by using the Met Office HadGEM3-GA6 modeling system, which comprises two sets of 525-member ensembles for 2019. One is forced with observed sea-surface temperatures (SSTs), sea-ice and all forcings, and the other is forced with preindustrialized SSTs and natural forcings only. The risk ratio between the exceedance probabilities estimated from all-forcing and natural-forcing simulations is calculated to quantify the anthropogenic contribution to the changing risks of the July 2019–like precipitation extremes. The results reveal that anthropogenic warming has reduced the likelihood of 2019-like 14-days heavy precipitation over the mid–lower reaches of the Yangtze River by 20%, but increased that of 2-days extremes by 30%.

Abstract:Abstract In June–July 2020, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLYR) were hit by a Meiyu event characterized by a long duration, abundant precipitation, and frequent heavy rainfall, resulting in destructive flooding. We found that the extreme cumulative precipitation in 2020 was mainly contributed by more moderate to heavy daily precipitation rather than extreme daily events. Although some previous studies have been conducted to attribute the 2020 Meiyu event in the MLYR, most of them focused on the cumulative precipitation amount. This attribution case study complements previous attribution analyses and reveals many new features. Our results show that anthropogenic climate change—primarily driven by greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing, anthropogenic aerosol (AA) forcing, and land‐use—has led to a decrease in the number of light to heavy precipitation days, while concurrently increasing the number of extreme precipitation days in the MLYR. Specifically, GHG and AA forcings decreased the frequency of light and moderate precipitation, but only GHG increased the frequency of extreme precipitation. An increasing trend in very heavy precipitation days has been observed. The competitive effects of GHG and AA forcings make it challenging to detect the signal of human activities, which could be intermingled with effects from natural variability. Under the SSP5‐8.5 scenario, the probability of experiencing both light and extreme precipitation events will significantly increase in the MLYR. By 2050–2100, these events are projected to be nearly 4 times more frequent compared to the current climate, which poses significant challenges to water security and economic development decision makers.

Abstract:Against the background of global warming, the losses caused by hydrological extreme events are becoming more serious. Understanding how to quantitatively attribute the trends of river discharge and extreme events will play an important role in climate change adaptation. The main objective of this study is to analyze recent trends in river discharge and annual maximum daily runoff in Chinese catchments and attribute them to the ongoing climate change, where possible. For that, 20 catchments in China, which are not influenced or influenced only slightly by water management, are chosen as study areas. Then, we use the long-term observational climate dataset GSWP3-W5E5 from ISIMIP3a as factual climate and a detrended climate dataset based on it as counterfactual climate to drive the hydrological model for quantification of climate change contribution to trends in mean and extreme runoff. Our analysis shows that the trends in annual discharge over the period 1961–2019 in eight catchments (all located in western China) represented by five stations in the Upper Yellow and Upper Yangtze, Kaqun station in the Tarim-Yeerqiang, Changdu station in the Lancangjiang and Xindi station in the Heihe can be attributed to climate change. As well, it is shown that climate change enhanced annual maximum daily runoff in the Upper Yellow and Upper Yangtze River basins. The results provide a new understanding of the degree to which observed changes in mean and extreme runoff were induced by the observed changes in climate, which may improve adaptation to climate change in China.

Abstract:The emergence of flash drought has raised widespread attention due to its rapid development and devastating impacts, but whether climate change affects its evolution and intensity is still elusive. Here, we investigate a severe flash drought event that fully developed over South China within a month in August, 2019 and persisted until November. It has a 1‐in‐229‐year rapid onset speed and 1‐in‐80‐year large intensity due to strong cyclonic anomaly over western North Pacific and persistent local geopotential height anomaly. The attribution based on the latest Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) data shows that anthropogenic climate change has increased the likelihood of onset speed and intensity of the drought event by 24%±16% and 37%±9% respectively, which is closely related to anthropogenic temperature increase and precipitation decrease. Abstract:The extreme precipitation and heatwave led to a 1-in-183-year extreme dry-wet contrast over South China in the 2020 summer. Anthropogenic influences increased the risk of such extremes by at least 3 times.
