Abstract:The impact of climate change on regional hydrological extreme events has been a research topic that has received much attention in recent years. This paper aims to provide a general overview of changes on future runoffs and water levels in the Qu River Basin, upper reaches of Qiantang River, East China by combining future climate scenarios, hydrological model and 1D hydraulic model. The LARS-WG (Long Ashton Research Station Weather Generator) statistical downscaling method is used to downscale the GCM (Global Climate Model) outputs (including BCC, BNU, CanESM and CSIRO under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios) and generate 50 years of synthetic precipitation and maximum and minimum temperatures to drive the GR4J hydrological model and the 1D hydraulic model for the baseline period 1971-2000 and the future period 2021-2050. Finally, the POT (Peaks over Threshold) method is applied to analyze the change of extreme events in the study area. The results show that design runoffs and water levels all indicate an increasing trend in the future period for Changshangang River and Jiangshangang River at most cases, especially for small return periods, and for Qu River the increase becomes larger, which suggests that the risk of flooding will probably become greater and appropriate adaptation measures need to be taken.

Abstract:Understanding the driving factors for precipitation extremes matters for adaptation and mitigation measures against the changing hydrometeorological hazards in Yangtze River basin, a habitable area that provides water resources for domestic, farming, and industrial needs. However, the region is naturally subject to major floods linked to monsoonal heavy precipitation during May–September. This study aims to quantify anthropogenic influences on the changing risk of 2-week-long precipitation extremes such as the July 2019 extreme cases, as well as events of shorter durations, over the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River basin (MLYRB). Precipitation extremes with different durations ranging from 1-day to 14-days maximum precipitation accumulations are investigated. Gridded daily precipitations based on nearly 2,400 meteorological stations across China are used to define maximum accumulated precipitation extremes over the MLYRB in July during 1961–2019. Attribution analysis is conducted by using the Met Office HadGEM3-GA6 modeling system, which comprises two sets of 525-member ensembles for 2019. One is forced with observed sea-surface temperatures (SSTs), sea-ice and all forcings, and the other is forced with preindustrialized SSTs and natural forcings only. The risk ratio between the exceedance probabilities estimated from all-forcing and natural-forcing simulations is calculated to quantify the anthropogenic contribution to the changing risks of the July 2019–like precipitation extremes. The results reveal that anthropogenic warming has reduced the likelihood of 2019-like 14-days heavy precipitation over the mid–lower reaches of the Yangtze River by 20%, but increased that of 2-days extremes by 30%.

Abstract:The hydrological cycle is anticipated to become increasingly variable due to intensified global climate extremes and frequent floods. Understanding the evolution and driving mechanisms of floods in the context of climatic extremes is essential, particularly on the Loess Plateau (LP) where anthropogenic activities are significant. Here, we examined the spatiotemporal variability of climate extremes and their impacts on flood processes on the LP during 1956-2015. We employed a paired year approach to quantitatively assess the driving role of anthropogenic activities on flood changes in 11 major basins. Our findings indicated a general decline in extreme precipitation indices, while temperature has increased across most of the LP. Both annual runoff (Q) and high flow (Q5) magnitude significantly decreased in all basins. We identified that the major climatic indices driving Q5 included erosive precipitation amount, flood season precipitation, heavy precipitation amount, and maximum 7day precipitation amount. Importantly, anthropogenic activities have mitigated the impact of climate extremes on Q5 regimes. Compared the post-2000 with reference period (1956-1979), under similar climatic conditions, we observed a reduction in the average Q5 magnitude by 30.19-78.14% and a decrease in the average Q5 duration by 46.48-100.00% across the basins. The contributions of climate variability and anthropogenic activities to Q5 magnitude changes among 11 basins ranged from -37.58% to 22.02% and -56.84% to -15.08%, respectively, highlighting the crucial role of ecological restoration in reducing Q5 magnitude. These results underscore the importance of ecological restoration in flood regulation and offer valuable insights for basin management in the Yellow River Basin.

Abstract:A warming climate may increase flood hazard through boosting the global hydrological cycle. However, human impact through modifications to the river and its catchment is not well quantified. Here, we show a 12,000-year-long record of Yellow River flood events by synthesizing sedimentary and documentary data of levee overtops and breaches. Our result reveals that flood events in the Yellow River basin became almost an order of magnitude more frequent during the last millennium than the middle Holocene and 81 ± 6% of the increased flood frequency can be ascribed to anthropogenic disturbances. Our findings not only shed light on the long-term dynamics of flood hazards in this world's most sediment-laden river but also inform policy of sustainable management of large rivers under anthropogenic stress elsewhere.

Abstract:The Yellow River Basin (YRB) has experienced severe floods and continuous riverbed elevation throughout history. Global climate change has been suggested to be driving a worldwide increase in flooding risk. However, owing to insufficient evidence, the quantitative correlation between flooding and climate change remains ill-defined. We present a long time series of maximum flood discharge in the YRB dating back to 1843 compiled from historical documents and instrument measurements. Variations in yearly maximum flood discharge show distinct periods: a dramatic decreasing period from 1843 to 1950, and an oscillating gentle decreasing from 1950 to 2021, with the latter period also showing increasing more extreme floods. A Mann-Kendall test analysis suggests that the latter period can be further split into two distinct sub-periods: an oscillating gentle decreasing period from 1950 to 2000, and a clear recent increasing period from 2000 to 2021. We further predict that climate change will cause an ongoing remarkable increase in future flooding risk and an ∼44.4 billion US dollars loss of floods in the YRB in 2100.

Abstract:River regulations and changing land management practices are generally perceived to be the dominant drivers of river flood changes in countries with rapid economic growth, such as China. Here we demonstrate, based on the most comprehensive flood database to date, that climate variations dominate the spatial pattern of changes in annual flood peak discharge in China, despite intense human alterations of the river and land systems over the past four decades. Regional flood increases are mainly associated with increasing precipitation due to changes in the East Asian Summer Monsoon, tropical cyclones and the subtropical westerly jet. Regional flood decreases are due to decreased soil moisture in the North China plain. Our results highlight the need for flood management policies to go beyond local measures and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Abstract:Global human‐induced warming has intensified water circulation in the atmospheric environment and altered the streamflow generation regime. The VIC hydrological model approach for impact assessment of climate change and human activities mainly focuses on variations in streamflow, but ignores other critical flooding characteristics induced by extreme streamflow, especially bivariate flooding characteristics. In this work, the copula functions are employed to structure the flooding risk under the shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) across the Yellow River basin (YRB). This is based on the multi‐model ensemble (MME) and Delta downscaling outputs (Delta‐MME) of the CMIP6 global climate models (GCMs), as well as the flooding characteristics simulated by VIC hydrological model. Compared to the reference period (1995–2014), Delta‐MME reveals a significant warming and humidifying trend under three SSPs over the YRB. Despite uncertainties originating from climate variables and hydrological model, multiple findings underscore the substantial influence of climate change on the flooding generation regime in YRB. This includes: (a) an increase in the streamflow under all SSPs; (b) a larger flooding peak (Q) and volume (W) under SSP585, with Q and W at the Huayuankou hydrologic station (HYK) increasing by 52.7% and 44.8%, respectively; (c) an advancement in the bivariate flooding risk, particularly in SSP585 where flooding co‐occurrence return period at HYK may be more than 50 times earlier. This study underscores that the urgent need to enhance social resilience to climate change in the YRB.

Abstract:Understanding the role of anthropogenic activities in the hydrological cycle is critical to support sustainable water management for the Yangtze River Basin (YRB), which experiences extensive dam operation, irrigation and water withdrawal. However, this remains challenging due to insufficient accuracies of existing process‐based models for fully depicting anthropogenic activities as part of the hydrological cycle. To this end, this study enhances a national‐scale coupled land surface‐hydrologic‐hydrodynamic model (CLHMS) with a dynamic irrigation scheme for distinct crops, an extended reservoir operation scheme incorporating both water storage anomalies and water demand anomalies, and a cost‐function‐based approach to link water demands with reservoir operation. The enhanced model is extensively validated against historical streamflow, water storage of 90 reservoirs, and irrigation water withdrawal in the YRB, and the water level and storage of the Poyang Lake (PYL). By setting up controlled experiments in the YRB, we show that the streamflow decreases by 2%–6% due to irrigation and water withdrawal, and manifests an attenuated seasonality due to reservoir operation. At the basin scale, the increasing trend of extreme flood peaks exhibits a reversal under human activities, with the flood mitigation effect of irrigation and water withdrawal accounting for up to 50% of that of reservoir operation. The hydrodynamics of the PYL also exhibits considerable human‐induced alterations, with a 1.79 m‐decrease in the water level at the end of flood season. Our study sheds light on quantifying anthropogenic hydrologic impacts at basin scales, with important implications for understanding the co‐evolution between anthropogenic activities and the hydrological cycle.

Abstract:Floods clustered in episodes are the most prevalent natural disaster worldwide, causing substantial economic and human losses. Although these events are often linked to time-periods of extreme rainstorms and unique atmospheric circulation patterns, the river basin characteristics affected by anthropogenic land use changes could exert a strong influence. However, the way and extent of how land use changes across different time scales affect flooding periods are still unclear, especially considering the historical land use changes. This study uses the Landlab landscape evolution model, coupled with an evapotranspiration model, to investigate the forcing factors for the paleo-flooding trends in the Wei River catchment over the last 5000 years. The results indicate that the flooding period from 4400 to 4000 BP was caused by an increase of 28 % in antecedent moisture content as well as a decrease of 28 % in its spatial variability, which are primarily due to climate change, and that the contribution of land-use change is less than 5 %. The increases of about 14 % and 8 % in main channel sedimentation rate play a leading role in flood generation during the time periods from 3400 to 2800 BP and 2000-1400 BP, respectively. These two periods of increased flooding are primarily caused by the erosional effects of increasing anthropogenic land use, whose contributions range from 33 % to 64 %. Furthermore, based on our modelling results, we suggest that the downstream propagation of the main flooding locations, from the Wei River to the lower reaches of the Yellow River, can be explained by the downstream migrating sediment wave. In conclusion, our simulation results give new insights into the causes of Holocene flooding periods in the middle Yellow River from the perspective of dynamic changes in catchment characteristics, which is helpful to improve regional flood risk management under future climate change and anthropogenic activities.

Abstract:The warming climate-induced intensification of hydrological cycle is amplifying extreme precipitation and increasing flood risk at regional and global scales. The evaluation of flood risk, which depends on assessment indicators, weights, as well as data quality, is the first step toward mitigation flood disasters. In this study, we accepted 10 risk assessment indicators concerning hazard of disaster-causing factors, sensitivity of hazard-forming environments, and vulnerability of disaster-bearing bodies. We used a combined weighting method based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process and Entropy Weight (AHP-EW) technique to evaluate rainstorm-induced flood risks across the Yellow River Basin (YRB) from 2000 to 2018. We observed flood hazards are intensifying across the YRB and a general escalation of flood hazard from southeast to northwest (lower to upper YRB). Specifically, areas with medium-magnitude flood hazards expanded from the lower to the middle and upper YRB. Rainstorm-induced flood risks are increasing from southeast to northwest (lower to upper YRB), and moderate flood risks can be identified over the Inner Mongolia-Ningxia-Gansu section of the YRB. Flood-related vulnerability shows an increasing trend, with higher vulnerability mainly observed in the middle and lower YRB. The overall flood risk in the YRB shows an increasing trend, with a 9-fold increase in flood risk from 2000 to 2018. Medium to high flood risk and vulnerability can mainly be identified in the middle and lower YRB, where population and GDP are concentrated. The intensifying rainstorm-induced flood risks over urban areas in these regions should arouse public concern.

Abstract:Increasing proportions of the global population are exposed to floods, including many living in the Yellow River floodplain. Since records were first kept in 602 BCE, there have been-1500 floods on the Yellow River, resulting in the death of millions of people. Counteracting increased flood risk requires an understanding of the relationship between climate, forest cover, erosion, and river flow. However, to assess whether the Yellow River basin is currently experiencing a period of high flood risk requires a long-term perspective. Here we use a variety of paleoenvironmental proxies (pollen, magnetic suscep-tibility, cladoceran assemblages) preserved in high-resolution, well-dated sediment records retrieved from an alpine lake in the middle Yellow River basin (Chinese Loess Plateau) within the agro-pastoral ecozone to examine how climatic and land-use changes affected aquatic ecosystems over the past-2000 years. Further, to examine changes in erosion, runoff production and flood frequency, we syn-thesize previously published proxy reconstructions of vegetation density, soil erosion, and dry-wet changes, as well as flood records from historical documents. We demonstrate that, following the period around the 10th century, excessive cultural deforestation outweighed climate effects and became the dominant factor that led to an unprecedented flood-rich period when drought conditions were common, cultivation expanded to meet food shortages, heavy silting raised the riverbed, and runoff and flood risk increased. These watershed changes, including enhanced soil erosion, affected the biological communities of aquatic ecosystems that led to the disappearance of planktonic cladocerans that hitherto dominated the assemblages. Increasing temperatures and weakening monsoon precipitation during the past-50 years, together with decreased erosion indicated by unprecedented reductions in Yellow River runoff and sediment load resulting from reforestation and damming, led to the re-establishment of planktonic cladocerans. Despite these recent changes, vegetation cover has not recovered to pre -deforestation levels, suggesting that the Yellow River is currently experiencing a high flood risk period. Our results emphasize the importance of considering vegetationeflooding relationships to help improve risk assessments and management protocols for the Yellow River. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Reduced Runoff in the Upper Yangtze River Due To Comparable Contribution of Anthropogenic and Climate Changes

Abstract:The changing climate and intensifying human activities have made an impact on the hydrological processes in the upper Yangtze River (UYR), but quantifying their effects remains uncertain. This study used the Budyko framework to investigate the response of runoff (Q) to climate change and human activities during 1956–2017 and evaluate the impacts of human activities, including land use/cover change, water use, dam construction, and vegetation change, on watershed characteristic. Results show that climate change is the dominant driver of Q variations in the Wujiang River (WJR), Jialing River (JLR), and Jinsha River (JSR) watersheds, with contributions of 58.6%, 66.9%, and 67.6%, respectively. However, in Mingjiang River (MJR) and UYR watersheds, human activities contribute more to Q variations with 55.2% and 51.2%, respectively. Human activities play important roles in variation of watershed characteristics, and they can explain 22%, 26%, 36%, 25%, and 53% of the watershed character change in UYR, WJR, JLR, MJR, and JSR, respectively. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of the causes of Q change in UYR, and provides a new perspective to explore the effects of specific human activities on watershed characteristics.

Abstract:Observed streamflow over the past decades in the upper Yellow River Basin (UYRB) was examined for changes in hydrological regime. The modified Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model was employed to better understand climate change impact and long-term and recent land cover/use change impact as it relates to the "Grain for Green Project" and "Three Rivers Source Region Reserve" on water resources by examining mechanisms behind observed streamflow changes.UYRB hydrological regimes have undergone changes over the past decades as reflected by a decrease in wet and warm season streamflow, and annual streamflow. Progressively more streamflow has been generated in the early part of the year compared to the latter part, consequently leading to the earlier occurrence of the day representing the midpoint of yearly mass flow. VIC simulations suggest that these changes in observed streamflow were due to the combined effects of changes in precipitation, evapotranspiration, rainfall runoff, and baseflow and were caused primarily by climate change above Tang Nai Hai (TNH) hydrometric station. Below TNH where human activity is relative intense, land cover/ use change and reservoir release impacts became important. Changes in snowmelt runoff were negligible over the past decades. Owing to this, snowmelt runoff appeared to play only a modest role in the changing hydrology of the region. The conservation programs were shown to start to exhibit some positive impacts on water resources in the UYRB. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Changes in Flood Regime of the Upper Yangtze River

Abstract:River flooding affects more people worldwide than other natural hazards. Thus, analysis of the changes in flood regime caused by global warming and increasing anthropogenic activities will help us make adaptive plans for future flood management. The nonstationary flood behavior in the upper Yangtze River was examined comprehensively in terms of trend, change point, and periodicity with co-usage of different methods. Results show that there are decreasing tendencies in the corresponding series of annual maximum flood peak flow and flood volume in four out of six control stations, except Pingshan and Wulong stations in the Jinsha River and the Wu River, respectively, and the flood peak occurrence time appears earlier mostly. The uniformity of flood process increases in four main tributaries, while it decreases in mainstream of the Yangtze River (Yichang and Pingshan stations). The rates of both rising limb and recession limb of all the typical flood process flowing through the six stations were analyzed. 77.8% of the rates of rising limb decrease, while 61.1% of the rates of recession limb increase, which is almost consistent with the variation reflected by the uniformity. The change points of most evaluation indicators happened in 1970s–1990s. The first main periodicity of evaluation indicators in Yichang is about 45 years, while that of other stations is about 20 years. Invalidity of stationarity in the flood series can be attributed to the intensified construction on major water conservancy projects, changes of underlying surface, and influences of climatic variables. The contributions of both climatic control and the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) to the variation of the annual flood peak in Yichang station were further quantitatively evaluated, which has verified that the construction of the TGD has played a positive role in peak-flood clipping.

Abstract:Increasing rainsto5rms induced by climate change and modification in the land surface due to urbanization have greatly altered floods at different spatio-temporal scales. However, investigating flood events in urbanized plains is challenging as anthropogenic behaviors can change river flow without rainfall. To fill these gaps, we proposed a scheme that focused on flood responses to rainfall to detect changes in flood characteristics in the Central Taihu Basin, a highly urbanized region in the Yangtze River Delta of China. Four characteristic metrics were adopted to summarize the flood hydrograph, including the peak, increment, rising rate, and falling rate. We then examined trends of these metrics based on the selected rainfall-flood events from ten hydrological stations during 1970–2020. Subsequently, the reduction method was used to separate the impacts of regional climate change and human activities on flood characteristics alterations. Furthermore, the importance of fifteen factors was quantified by the random forest model. We found that there is a significant upward trend in the evolution of flood characteristics, except for the increment of floods. Flood characteristics exhibit higher values when rainfall accumulates, indicating stronger responses of floods to a large amount of rainfall. The results also show that human activities dominate and impact the peak, rising rate, and falling rate of floods more than climate change. Meanwhile, although cumulative precipitation is the most important factor, flood characteristics are also susceptible to anthropogenic factors, such as land use change and hydraulic engineering construction. Our findings, which provide insights into flood event identification and enhance the understanding of regional flood changes, will serve as a reference for water resource management in urbanized plains with river networks.

Abstract:The streamflow of major global rivers changes under the influences of climate change and human activities and varies greatly in different regions. The Yellow River has undergone a dramatic shift during the last six decades. Its streamflow gradually dwindled away and even dried-up severely in the late 20th century, but in recent years it has recovered and remains stable. Comprehensive understanding of the river streamflow change and its driving forces promotes effective water resource management within this complex human-natural system. Here, we develop a runoff identity attribution approach to analyze 61 years of streamflow observations from the Yellow River. We find that between the 1950s and the 1980s, human water consumption contributed more than 90% to streamflow reduction, but from the 1970s onwards, land cover change became the major factor to decrease streamflow. Since 2000, government management schemes have prevented streamflow from declining further and guarantee its stability. Based on the analysis framework we propose, persistent droughts, which are related to abrupt streamflow abatement, may be the most uncontrollable factor in the future. A more resilient management system should be therefore built to grapple with the expected increased frequency of such extreme climate events in the future.
Individual and combined impacts of future land-use and climate conditions on extreme hydrological events in a representative basin of the Yangtze River Delta, China

Abstract:Land use/cover change (LUCC) as well as climate change have the potential to significantly alter the characteristics of extreme hydrological events under changing environments. This study evaluates the individual and combined impacts that LUCC and climate change have on extreme hydrological events using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) applied in the Xitiaoxi River Basin (XRB). Two future land-use conditions, projected by CA-Markov model, and 21 climate scenarios, downscaled from three general circulation models, are considered. The results show that urban area would expand dramatically from 4.4% to 12.63%, which mainly occupy the forest-grass and agriculture land. The LUCC will decrease low flow index as well as increase high flow index, annual maximum 1-day and 5-day streamflow. Extreme precipitation indices all exhibit trends toward an increase in future occurrence. Furthermore, in testing the response of extreme hydrological events to climate change, most extreme hydrological indices are predicted to become greater than they were throughout the 1970s. The combined effects of LUCC and climate change would increase all extreme hydrological indices. Moreover, the climate change would contribute >50% of these hydrological impacts. These findings indicate that the XRB will experience more severe extreme hydrological events in both flooding and drought due to climate and land-use change. It is advised that disaster mitigation measures must be updated accordingly to respond to this changing situation.

Abstract:The Yellow River is one of the major rivers with severe runoff declines in China, but there are significant differences in runoff changes in the upper and lower reaches of the basin and among different tributaries. However, the characteristic of runoff change and its spatial heterogeneity are not well understood in the whole basin. In this paper, 48 hydrological stations located in the mainstream and major tributaries were selected, and the meteorological and runoff data from 1956 to 2017 were collected. The multi-year and intra-year changes in runoff were analyzed, and then the attribution of climate change and human activity to runoff change was quantified by the climate elasticity coefficients. The results showed that: (1) in the past 60 years, the runoff of the Yellow River showed a serious decrease trend of −8.25 mm/10a. Moreover, most tributaries decreased significantly in runoff with a rate of −1.42 mm/10a to −28.99 mm/10a; (2) for the whole basin, the contribution of climate change and human activity to runoff changes was 13% and 87%, respectively. Moreover, the contribution of the two factors varied considerably in different tributaries. Finally, focusing on different runoff regime and socioeconomic characteristics, this study provided corresponding water resources adaptive management suggestions.
