Abstract:In 2011, Li et al. \cite{LLL} obtained an upper bound of the strong rainbow connection number of an $r$-dimensional undirected toroidal mesh. In this paper, this bound is improved. As a result, we give a negative answer to their problem.

Abstract:Motivated by some models of transmitting messages in interconnection networks,we studied a new parameter, named (d,4)-dominating number,in 2-dimensional toroidal mesh C(d1,d2).We show that the (d,4)-dominating number of C(d1,d2)(d1≥3,d2≥3) is 2 for d＝diam(G) or diam(G)+1.

Abstract:An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. We prove if $G$ is a connected strongly $r$-regular graph and $r\geq 600$, then $rc(G)\leq3$. Specially, there is a constant $c$ such that $rc(G)\leq c$ for any connected strongly regular graph $G$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected and edge-colored graph. An edge-cut $R$ of $G$ is called a rainbow cut if no two edges of it are colored with a same color. An edge-colored graph $G$ is called rainbow disconnected if for every two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, there exists a $u-v$ rainbow cut separating them. For a connected graph $G$, the rainbow disconnection number of $G$, denoted by $rd(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow disconnected. In this paper, we will study the Erdős-Gallai-type results for $rd(G)$, and completely solve them.

Abstract:For a fixed graph $H$, we say that an edge-colored graph $G$ is \emph{weakly $H$-rainbow saturated} if there exists an ordering $e_1, e_2, \ldots, e_m$ of $E\left(\overline{G}\right)$ such that, for any list $c_1, c_2, \ldots, c_m$ of pairwise distinct colors from $\mathbb{N}$, the non-edges $e_i$ in color $c_i$ can be added to $G$, one at a time, so that every added edge creates a new rainbow copy of $H$. The \emph{weak rainbow saturation number} of $H$, denoted by $rwsat(n,H)$, is the minimum number of edges in a weakly $H$-rainbow saturated graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we show that for any non-empty graph $H$, the limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{rwsat(n, H)}{n}$ exists. This answers a question of Behague, Johnston, Letzter, Morrison and Ogden [{\it SIAM J. Discrete Math.} (2023)]. We also provide lower and upper bounds on this limit, and in particular, we show that this limit is nonzero if and only if $H$ contains no pendant edges.

Some results on the rainbow vertex-disconnection colorings of graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected and vertex-colored graph. A vertex subset $X$ is called rainbow if any two vertices in $X$ have distinct colors. The graph $G$ is called \emph{rainbow vertex-disconnected} if for any two vertices $x$ and $y$ of $G$, there exists a vertex subset $S$ such that when $x$ and $y$ are nonadjacent, $S$ is rainbow and $x$ and $y$ belong to different components of $G-S$; whereas when $x$ and $y$ are adjacent, $S+x$ or $S+y$ is rainbow and $x$ and $y$ belong to different components of $(G-xy)-S$. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{rainbow vertex-disconnection number} of $G$, $rvd(G)$, is the minimum number of colors that are needed to make $G$ rainbow vertex-disconnected. In this paper, we prove for any $K_4$-minor free graph, $rvd(G)\leq \Delta(G)$ and the bound is sharp. We show it is $NP$-complete to determine the rainbow vertex-disconnection number for bipartite graphs and split graphs. Moreover, we show for every $\epsilon>0$, it is impossible to efficiently approximate the rainbow vertex-disconnection number of any bipartite graph and split graph within a factor of $n^{\frac{1}{3}-\epsilon}$ unless $ZPP=NP$.

Abstract:For any posotive integer $m$, let $[m]:=\{1,\ldots,m\}$. Let $n,k,t$ be positive integers. Aharoni and Howard conjectured that if, for $i\in [t]$, $\mathcal{F}_i\subset[n]^k:= \{(a_1,\ldots,a_k): a_j\in [n] \mbox{ for } j\in [k]\}$ and $|\mathcal{F}_i|>(t-1)n^{k-1}$, then there exist $M\subseteq [n]^k$ such that $|M|=t$ and $|M\cap \mathcal{F}_i|=1$ for $i\in [t]$ We show that this conjecture holds when $n\geq 3(k-1)(t-1)$. Let $n, t, k_1\ge k_2\geq \ldots\geq k_t $ be positive integers. Huang, Loh and Sudakov asked for the maximum $\Pi_{i=1}^t |{\cal R}_i|$ over all ${\cal R}=\{{\cal R}_1, \ldots ,{\cal R}_t\}$ such that each ${\cal R}_i$ is a collection of $k_i$-subsets of $[n]$ for which there does not exist a collection $M$ of subsets of $[n]$ such that $|M|=t$ and $|M\cap \mathcal{R}_i|=1$ for $i\in [t]$ %and ${\cal R}$ does not admit a rainbow matching. Abstract:An edge coloring of a graph G results in G being rainbow connected when every pair of vertices is linked by a rainbow path. Such a path is defined as one where each edge possesses a distinct color. A rainbow coloring refers to an edge coloring that guarantees the rainbow connectedness of G. The rainbow connection number of G represents the smallest quantity of colors required to achieve rainbow connectedness under a rainbow coloring scheme. Wang and Hsu (ICICM 2019: 75–79) provided upper bounds on the size of the rainbow connection numbers in WK-recursive networks WKd,t and WK-recursive pyramids WKPd,n. In this paper, we revise their results and determine the exact values of the rainbow connection numbers of WKd,2 for d=3 and 4. The rainbow connection numbers of WKd,2 are bounded between 4 and ⌊d2⌋+2 for d>4. In addition to our previous findings, we further investigate and determine upper bounds for the size of the rainbow connection numbers of WKPd,n. This involves analyzing various aspects of the graph structure and exploring potential limitations on the rainbow connection numbers. By establishing these upper bounds, we gain deeper insights into the potential range and constraints of the rainbow connection numbers within the given context.

Hardness results for three kinds of colored connections of graphs

Abstract:The concept of rainbow connection number of a graph was introduced by Chartrand et al. in 2008. Inspired by this concept, other concepts on colored version of connectivity in graphs were introduced, such as the monochromatic connection number by Caro and Yuster in 2011, the proper connection number by Borozan et al. in 2012, and the conflict-free connection number by Czap et al. in 2018, as well as some other variants of connection numbers later on. Chakraborty et al. proved that to compute the rainbow connection number of a graph is NP-hard. For a long time, it has been tried to fix the computational complexity for the monochromatic connection number, the proper connection number and the conflict-free connection number of a graph. However, it has not been solved yet. Only the complexity results for the strong version, i.e., the strong proper connection number and the strong conflict-free connection number, of these connection numbers were determined to be NP-hard. In this paper, we prove that to compute each of the monochromatic connection number, the proper connection number and the conflict free connection number for a graph is NP-hard. This solves a long standing problem in this field, asked in many talks of workshops and papers.

Sharp bounds for rainbow matchings in hypergraphs

Abstract:Suppose we are given matchings $M_1,....,M_N$ of size $t$ in some $r$-uniform hypergraph, and let us think of each matching having a different color. How large does $N$ need to be (in terms of $t$ and $r$) such that we can always find a rainbow matching of size $t$? This problem was first introduced by Aharoni and Berger, and has since been studied by several different authors. For example, Alon discovered an intriguing connection with the Erdős--Ginzburg--Ziv problem from additive combinatorics, which implies certain lower bounds for $N$. For any fixed uniformity $r \ge 3$, we answer this problem up to constant factors depending on $r$, showing that the answer is on the order of $t^{r}$. Furthermore, for any fixed $t$ and large $r$, we determine the answer up to lower order factors. We also prove analogous results in the setting where the underlying hypergraph is assumed to be $r$-partite. Our results settle questions of Alon and of Glebov-Sudakov-Szabó.

A rainbow vertex k -coloring of G is a function c : V ( G ) → {1,2,..., k } such that for every two vertices u and v in V ( G ) there exists a u - v path whose internal vertices have distinct colors. Such path is called a rainbow vertex path. The rainbow vertex connection number of G , denoted by rvc ( G ). is the smallest positive integer k so that G has a rainbow vertex k -coloring. Essentially tight bounds for rainbow cycles in proper edge-colourings

Abstract:An edge-coloured graph is said to be rainbow if no colour appears more than once. Extremal problems involving rainbow objects have been a focus of much research over the last decade as they capture the essence of a number of interesting problems in a variety of areas. A particularly intensively studied question due to Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte from 2007 asks for the maximum possible average degree of a properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices without a rainbow cycle. Improving upon a series of earlier bounds, Tomon proved an upper bound of $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ for this question. Very recently, Janzer-Sudakov and Kim-Lee-Liu-Tran independently removed the $o(1)$ term in Tomon's bound, showing a bound of $O(\log^2 n)$. We prove an upper bound of $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ for this maximum possible average degree when there is no rainbow cycle. Our result is tight up to the $o(1)$ term, and so it essentially resolves this question. In addition, we observe a connection between this problem and several questions in additive number theory, allowing us to extend existing results on these questions for abelian groups to the case of non-abelian groups.

Abstract:We investigate the rainbow k -connectivity rc k and ( t , k ) -rainbow index rx t , k of the inhomogeneous random graph G ( n , p ) , where any two vertices i and j are joined by an edge e i j with probability p ( e i j ) independently of all other edges, and p = { p ( e i j ) } . We show that the known threshold functions for the monotone properties rc k ( G ( n , p ) ) ≤ r and rx t , k ( G ( n , p ) ) ≤ t for integers k , r and t in the Erdős–Rényi random graph G ( n , p ) can be extended to ‘threshold landscapes’ in terms of G ( n , p ) . In contrast to the traditional plain thresholds characterized as a watershed, our threshold landscapes have two surfaces that are inherently interwoven with each other. This sheds some light on the network connectivity as appropriate trade-offs are allowed and is potentially applicable in network science where connections are not always equal.

Abstract:The rainbow Turán number, a natural extension of the well studied traditional Turán number, was introduced in 2007 by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. The rainbow Turán number of a graph $H$, $ex^{*}(n,H)$, is the largest number of edges for an $n$ vertex graph $G$ which can be properly edge colored with no rainbow $H$ subgraph. We explore the reduction method for finding upper bounds on rainbow Turán numbers, and use this to inform results for the rainbow Turán numbers of double stars, caterpillars, and perfect binary trees. In addition, we define $k$-unique colorings and the related $k$-unique Turán numbers. We provide preliminary results on this new variant on the classic problem.

Abstract:An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. It was proved that computing $rc(G)$ is an NP-Hard problem, as well as that even deciding whether a graph has $rc(G)=2$ is NP-Complete. It is known that deciding whether a given edge-colored graph is rainbow connected is NP-Complete. We will prove that it is still NP-Complete even when the edge-colored graph is a planar bipartite graph. We also give upper bounds of the rainbow connection number of outerplanar graphs with small diameters. A vertex-colored graph is rainbow vertex-connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose internal vertices have distinct colors. The rainbow vertex-connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rvc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow vertex-connected. It is known that deciding whether a given vertex-colored graph is rainbow vertex-connected is NP-Complete. We will prove that it is still NP-Complete even when the vertex-colored graph is a line graph.

Abstract:Let $G = (V, E)$ be a graph on $n$ vertices, and let $c: E \to P$, where $P$ is a set of colors. Let $\delta^c(G) = \min_{v \in V} \{ d^{c}(v) \}$ where $d^c(v)$ is the number of colors on edges incident to a vertex $v$ of $G$. In 2011, Fujita and Magnant showed that if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices that satisfies $\delta^c(G)\geq n/2$, then for every two vertices $u, v$ there is a properly-colored $u,v$-path in $G$. In this paper, we show that the same bound for $\delta^c(G)$ implies that any two vertices are connected by a rainbow path.

Abstract:Let $D$ be an arc-colored digraph. The arc number $a(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of arcs of $D$. The color number $c(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of colors assigned to the arcs of $D$. A rainbow triangle in $D$ is a directed triangle in which every pair of arcs have distinct colors. Let $f(D)$ be the smallest integer such that if $c(D)\geq f(D)$, then $D$ contains a rainbow triangle. In this paper we obtain $f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$ and $f(T_n)$, where $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ is a complete digraph of order $n$ and $T_n$ is a strongly connected tournament of order $n$. Moreover we characterize the arc-colored complete digraph $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ with $c(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})=f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})-1$ and containing no rainbow triangles. We also prove that an arc-colored digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices contains a rainbow triangle when $a(D)+c(D)\geq a(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})+f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$, which is a directed extension of the undirected case.

Abstract:We show that for every integer $m \ge 2$ and large $n$, every properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with at least $n (\log n)^{53}$ edges contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_m$. This is sharp up to a polylogarithmic factor. Our proof method exploits the connection between the mixing time of random walks and expansion in graphs.

Abstract:A graph has a locating rainbow coloring if every pair of its vertices can be connected by a path passing through internal vertices with distinct colors and every vertex generates a unique rainbow code. The minimum number of colors needed for a graph to have a locating rainbow coloring is referred to as the locating rainbow connection number of a graph. Let $G$ and $H$ be two connected, simple, and undirected graphs on disjoint sets of $|V(G)|$ and $|V(H)|$ vertices, $|E(G)|$ and $|E(G)|$ edges, respectively. For $j\in\{1,2,...,|E(G_m)|\}$, the edge corona of $G_m$ and $H_n$, denoted as $G_m \diamond H_n$, is constructed by using a single copy of $G_m$ and $E(G_m)$ copies of $H_n$, and then connecting the two end vertices of the $j$-th edge of $G_m$ to every vertex in the $j$-th copy of $H_n$. In this paper, we determine the upper and lower bounds of the locating rainbow connection number for the class of graphs resulting from the edge corona of a graph with a complete graph. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these upper and lower bounds are tight.

Abstract:We show that for any integer $k\ge 1$ there exists an integer $t_0(k)$ such that for integers $t, k_1, \ldots, k_{t+1}, n$ with $t>t_0(k)$, $\max\{k_1, \ldots, k_{t+1}\}\le k$, and $n > 2k(t+1)$, the following holds: If $F_i \subseteq {[n]\choose k_i}$ and $|F_i|> {n\choose k_i}-{n-t\choose k_i} - {n-t-k \choose k_i-1} + 1$ for all $i \in [t+1]$, then either $\{F_1,\ldots, F_{t+1}\}$ admits a rainbow matching of size $t+1$ or there exists $W\in {[n]\choose t}$ such that $W$ is a vertex cover of $F_i$ for all $i\in [t+1]$. This may be viewed as a rainbow non-uniform extension of the classical Hilton-Milner theorem. We also show that the same holds for every $t$ and $n > 2k^3t$, generalizing a recent stability result of Frankl and Kupavskii on matchings to rainbow matchings.
