Abstract:Deterministic recursive algorithms for the computation of matrix triangular decompositions with permutations like LU and Bruhat decomposition are presented for the case of commutative domains. This decomposition can be considered as a generalization of LU and Bruhat decompositions, because they both may be easily obtained from this triangular decomposition. Algorithms have the same complexity as the algorithm of matrix multiplication.

Abstract:Given a complex matrix H, we consider the decomposition H = QRP*, where R is upper triangular and Q and P have orthonormal columns. Special instances of this decomposition include the singular value decomposition (SVD) and the Schur decomposition where R is an upper triangular matrix with the eigenvalues of H on the diagonal. We show that any diagonal for R can be achieved that satisfies Weyl's multiplicative majorization conditions:(k)Pi(i =1) |r(i)| <= (k)Pi(i =1) sigma(i), 1 <= k < K, (k)Pi(i =1) |r(i)| = (k)Pi(i =1) sigma(i),where K is the rank of H, sigma(i) is the i-th largest singular value of H, and r(i) is the i-th largest (in magnitude) diagonal element of R. Given a vector r which satisfies Weyl's conditions, we call the decomposition H = QRP*, where R is upper triangular with prescribed diagonal r, the generalized triangular decomposition (GTD). A direct (nonrecursive) algorithm is developed for computing the GTD. This algorithm starts with the SVD and applies a series of permutations and Givens rotations to obtain the GTD. The numerical stability of the GTD update step is established. The GTD can be used to optimize the power utilization of a communication channel, while taking into account quality of service requirements for subchannels. Another application of the GTD is to inverse eigenvalue problems where the goal is to construct matrices with prescribed eigenvalues and singular values.

Abstract:Gerstenhaber showed in 1961 that any commuting pair of n x n matrices over a field k generates a k-algebra A of k-dimension \leq n. A well-known example shows that the corresponding statement for 4 matrices is false. The question for 3 matrices is open. Gerstenhaber's result can be looked at as a statement about the relation between the length of a 2-generator finite-dimensional commutative k-algebra A and the lengths of faithful A-modules. Wadsworth generalized this result to a larger class of commutative rings than those generated by two elements over a field. We recover his generalization, using a slightly improved argument. We then explore some examples, raise further questions, and make a bit of progress toward answering some of them. An appendix gives some results on generation and subdirect decompositions of modules over not necessarily commutative Artinian rings, generalizing a special case used in the paper. What I originally thought of as my main result turned out to have been anticipated by Wadsworth, so I probably won't submit this for publication unless I find further strong results to add. However, others may find interesting the observations, partial results, and questions noted, and perhaps make some progress on them.

Abstract:Let L be a distributive lattice and M n , q ( L ) (M n ( L ) , resp.) the semigroup (semiring, resp.) of n × q ( n × n , resp.) matrices over L . In this paper, we show that if there is a subdirect embedding from distributive lattice L to the direct product ∏ i = 1 m ‍ L i of distributive lattices L 1 , L 2 , ... , L m , then there will be a corresponding subdirect embedding from the matrix semigroup M n , q ( L ) (semiring M n ( L ) , resp.) to semigroup ∏ i = 1 m ‍ M n , q ( L i ) (semiring ∏ i = 1 m ‍ M n ( L i ) , resp.). Further, it is proved that a matrix over a distributive lattice can be decomposed into the sum of matrices over some of its special subchains. This generalizes and extends the decomposition theorems of matrices over finite distributive lattices, chain semirings, fuzzy semirings, and so forth. Finally, as some applications, we present a method to calculate the indices and periods of the matrices over a distributive lattice and characterize the structures of idempotent and nilpotent matrices over it. We translate the characterizations of idempotent and nilpotent matrices over a distributive lattice into the corresponding ones of the binary Boolean cases, which also generalize the corresponding structures of idempotent and nilpotent matrices over general Boolean algebras, chain semirings, fuzzy semirings, and so forth.

Abstract:Based on the column pivoted QR decomposition, we propose some randomized algorithms including pass-efficient ones for the generalized CUR decompositions of matrix pair and matrix triplet. Detailed error analyses of these algorithms are provided. Numerical experiments are given to test the proposed randomized algorithms.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a matrix whose entries are linear forms over the noncommutative variables $x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n$. The noncommutative Edmonds' problem (NSINGULAR) aims to determine whether $T$ is invertible in the free skew field generated by $x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n$. Currently, there are three different deterministic polynomial-time algorithms to solve this problem: using operator scaling [Garg, Gurvits, Oliveira, and Wigserdon (2016)], algebraic methods [Ivanyos, Qiao, and Subrahmanyam (2018)], and convex optimization [Hamada and Hirai (2021)]. In this paper, we present a simpler algorithm for the NSINGULAR problem. While our algorithmic template is similar to the one in Ivanyos et. al.(2018), it significantly differs in its implementation of the rank increment step. Instead of computing the limit of a second Wong sequence, we reduce the problem to the polynomial identity testing (PIT) of noncommutative algebraic branching programs (ABPs). This enables us to bound the bit-complexity of the algorithm over $\mathbb{Q}$ without requiring special care. Moreover, the rank increment step can be implemented in quasipolynomial-time even without an explicit description of the coefficient matrices in $T$. This is possible by exploiting the connection with the black-box PIT of noncommutative ABPs [Forbes and Shpilka (2013)].

Fast Computation of the Rank Profile Matrix and the Generalized Bruhat Decomposition

Abstract:The row (resp. column) rank profile of a matrix describes the stair-case shape of its row (resp. column) echelon form. We here propose a new matrix invariant, the rank profile matrix, summarizing all information on the row and column rank profiles of all the leading sub-matrices. We show that this normal form exists and is unique over any ring, provided that the notion of McCoy's rank is used, in the presence of zero divisors. We then explore the conditions for a Gaussian elimination algorithm to compute all or part of this invariant, through the corresponding PLUQ decomposition. This enlarges the set of known Elimination variants that compute row or column rank profiles. As a consequence a new Crout base case variant significantly improves the practical efficiency of previously known implementations over a finite field. With matrices of very small rank, we also generalize the techniques of Storjohann and Yang to the computation of the rank profile matrix, achieving an $(r^\omega+mn)^{1+o(1)}$ time complexity for an $m \times n$ matrix of rank $r$, where $\omega$ is the exponent of matrix multiplication. Finally, by give connections to the Bruhat decomposition, and several of its variants and generalizations. Thus, our algorithmic improvements for the PLUQ factorization, and their implementations, directly apply to these decompositions. In particular, we show how a PLUQ decomposition revealing the rank profile matrix also reveals both a row and a column echelon form of the input matrix or of any of its leading sub-matrices, by a simple post-processing made of row and column permutations.

Abstract:We generalize the result of Gorini, Kossakowski, and Sudarshan [J. Math. Phys. 17:821, 1976] that every generator of a quantum-dynamical semigroup decomposes uniquely into a closed and a dissipative part, assuming the trace of both vanishes. More precisely, we show that given any generator $L$ of a completely positive dynamical semigroup and any matrix $B$ there exists a unique matrix $K$ and a unique completely positive map $\Phi$ such that (i) $L=K(\cdot)+(\cdot)K^*+\Phi$, (ii) the superoperator $\Phi(B^*(\cdot)B)$ has trace zero, and (iii) ${\rm tr}(B^*K)$ is a real number. The key to proving this is the relation between the trace of a completely positive map, the trace of its Kraus operators, and expectation values of its Choi matrix. Moreover, we show that the above decomposition is orthogonal with respect to some $B$-weighted inner product.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a ring and let $n\ge 2$. We discuss the question of whether every element in the matrix ring $M_n(R)$ is a product of (additive) commutators $[x,y]=xy-yx$, for $x,y\in M_n(R)$. An example showing that this does not always hold, even when $R$ is commutative, is provided. If, however, $R$ has Bass stable rank one, then under various additional conditions every element in $M_n(R)$ is a product of three commutators. Further, if $R$ is a division ring with infinite center, then every element in $M_n(R)$ is a product of two commutators. If $R$ is a field and $a\in M_n(R)$, then every element in $M_n(R)$ is a sum of elements of the form $[a,x][a,y]$ with $x,y\in M_n(R)$ if and only if the degree of the minimal polynomial of $a$ is greater than $2$.

Abstract:A new runtime environment for the execution of recursive matrix algorithms on a supercomputer with distributed memory is proposed. It is designed both for dense and sparse matrices. The environment ensures decentralized control of the computation process. As an example of a block recursive algorithm, the Cholesky factorization of a symmetric positive definite matrix in the form of a block dichotomous algorithm is described. The results of experiments with different numbers of cores are presented, demonstrating good scalability of the proposed solution.
