Abstract:For abelian length categories the borderline between finite and infinite representation type is discussed. Characterisations of finite representation type are extended to length categories of infinite height, and the minimal length categories of infinite height are described.

Abstract:We develop axiomatics of highest weight categories and quasi-hereditary algebras in order to incorporate two semi-infinite situations which are in Ringel duality with each other; the underlying posets are either upper finite or lower finite . We also consider various more general sorts of stratified categories. In the upper finite cases, we give an alternative characterization of these categories in terms of based quasi-hereditary algebras and based stratified algebras, which are certain locally unital algebras possessing triangular bases.

Abstract:The length of a double category is a numerical invariant measuring the 'work' it takes to reconstruct the double category from its globular data. The smallest possible length of a double category is 1. It is conjectured that framed bicategories are of length 1. In this paper we prove this conjecture for a particular class of framed bicategories, namely for those double categories for which all their unit squares are cartesian/opcartesian. We call these framed bicategories fully faithful/absolutely dense.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of composition series of triangulated categories. Their lengths yield invariants for these categories. We then focus on composition series of derived categories of certain projective varieties and finite dimensional algebras. We construct composition series of different lengths, for some smooth projective rational surfaces and for certain smooth threefolds. On the other hand, we prove that for derived categories of finite dimensional representations of Dynkin and extended Dynkin quivers, for derived categories of some singular varieties, all composition series have the same length. If this property would also hold for the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ in $10$ general points, then Krah's phantom subcategory would have infinite length. In particular, it would have infinite chain of thick subcategories.

Representations of $\mathbb{N}^{\infty}$-type combinatorial categories

Abstract:In this paper we consider representations of certain combinatorial categories, including the poset $\D$ of positive integers and division, the Young lattice $\mathscr{Y}$ of partitions of finite sets, the opposite category of the orbit category $\mathscr{Z}$ of $(\mathbb{Z}, +)$ with respect to nontrivial subgroups, and the category $\mathscr{CI}$ of finite cyclic groups and injective homomorphisms. We describe explicit upper bounds for homological degrees of their representations, and deduce that finitely presented representations (resp., representations presented in finite degrees) over a field form abelian subcategories of the representation categories. We also give an explicit description for the category of sheaves over the ringed atomic site $(\mathscr{Z}, \, J_{at}, \, \underline{\mathbb{C}})$, and show that irreducible sheaves are parameterized by primitive roots of the unit.

CP$^{\infty}$ and beyond: 2-categorical dilation theory

Abstract:The problem of extending the insights and techniques of categorical quantum mechanics to infinite-dimensional systems was considered in (Coecke and Heunen, 2016). In that work the $\mathrm{CP}^{\infty}$-construction, which recovers the category of Hilbert spaces and quantum operations from the category of Hilbert spaces and bounded linear maps, was defined. Here we show that by a `horizontal categorification' of the $\mathrm{CP}^{\infty}$-construction, one can recover the category of all von Neumann algebras and channels (normal unital completely positive maps) from the 2-category $[W^*]$ of von Neumann algebras, bimodules and intertwiners. As an application, we extend Choi's characterisation of extremal channels between finite-dimensional matrix algebras to a characterisation of extremal channels between arbitrary von Neumann algebras.

Abstract:We study locally finitary realizations of simple transitive module categories of infinite rank over the monoidal category $\mathscr{C}$ of finite dimensional modules for the complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. Combinatorics of such realizations is governed by six infinite Coxeter diagrams. We show that five of these are realizable in our setup, while one (type $B_\infty$) is not. We also describe the $\mathscr{C}$-module subcategories of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-mod generated by simple modules as well as the $\mathscr{C}$-module categories coming from the natural action of $\mathscr{C}$ on the categories of finite dimensional modules over Lie subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$.

Abstract:It is known that monoidal categories have a finite definition, whereas multicategories have an infinite (albeit finitary) definition. Since monoidal categories correspond to representable multicategories, it goes without saying that representable multicategories should also admit a finite description. With this in mind, we give a new finite definition of a structure called a short multicategory, which only has multimaps of dimension at most four, and show that under certain representability conditions short multicategories correspond to various flavours of representable multicategories. This is done in both the classical and skew settings.

Abstract:Recently, Amnon Neeman settled a bold conjecture by Antieau, Gepner, and Heller regarding the relationship between the regularity of finite-dimensional noetherian schemes and the existence of bounded $t$-structures on their derived categories of perfect complexes. In this paper, using different methods, we prove some very general results about the existence of bounded $t$-structures on (not necessarily algebraic or topological) triangulated categories and their invariance under completion. We show that if the opposite category of an essentially small triangulated category has finite finitistic dimension in our sense, then the existence of a bounded t-structure on it forces it to be equal to its completion. We also prove a parallel result regarding the equivalence of all bounded t-structures on any intermediate triangulated category between the starting category and its completion. Our general treatment, when specialized to the case of schemes, immediately gives us Neeman's theorem as an application and significantly generalizes another remarkable theorem by Neeman about the equivalence of bounded $t$-structures on the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. When specialized to other cases like associative rings, nonpositive DG-rings, connective $\mathbb{E}_1$-rings, triangulated categories without models, etc., we get many other applications. Under mild finiteness assumptions, these results not only give a categorical obstruction (the singularity category in our sense) to the existence of bounded $t$-structures on a triangulated category, but also provide plenty of triangulated categories on which all bounded $t$-structures are equivalent. The strategy used in our treatment is introducing a new concept of finitistic dimension for triangulated categories and lifting $t$-structures along completions of triangulated categories.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate representation theory of infinitesimal (BiHom-)bialgebras of any weight $ł$ (abbr. $ł$-inf(BH)-bialgebras). Firstly, inspired by the well-known Majid-Radford's bosonization theory in Hopf algebra theory, we present a class of $ł$-inf(BH)-bialgebras, named $ł$-inf(BH)-biproduct bialgebras, consisting of an inf(BH)-product algebra structure and an inf(BH)-coproduct coalgebra structure, which induces a structure of a $ł$-inf(BH)-Hopf bimodule over a $ł$-inf(BH)-bialgebra. Secondly, we explore relationships among $ł$-inf(BH)-Hopf bimodules, $ł$-Rota-Baxter (BiHom-)bimodules, (BiHom-)dendriform bimodules and (BiHom-)pre-Lie bimodules. Finally, we provide two kinds of general Gelfand-Dorfman theorems related to BiHom-Novikov algebras.

Abstract:This article contains a review of categorifications of semisimple representations of various rings via abelian categories and exact endofunctors on them. A simple definition of an abelian categorification is presented and illustrated with several examples, including categorifications of various representations of the symmetric group and its Hecke algebra via highest weight categories of modules over the Lie algebra sl(n). The review is intended to give non-experts in representation theory who are familiar with the topological aspects of categorification (lifting quantum link invariants to homology theories) an idea for the sort of categories that appear when link homology is extended to tangles.

Formal category theory in $\infty$-equipments I

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of proarrow equipments to the $\infty$-categorical setting, termed $\infty$-equipments. These equipments take the form of particular double $\infty$-categories that support a notion of internal formal higher category theory. We will explore several examples of $\infty$-equipments. In particular, we will study the prototypical example given by the $\infty$-equipment of $\infty$-categories, and construct $\infty$-equipments of $\infty$-categories internal to general $\infty$-toposes as well. The final objective of this article is to study the fundamental notions of formal higher category theory within an arbitrary $\infty$-equipment. To this end, we not only follow the classical approach but also expand upon it.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors introduce a new definition of ∞-tilting (resp. cotilting) subcategories with infinite projective dimensions (resp. injective dimensions) in an extriangulated category. They give a Bazzoni characterization of ∞-tilting (resp. cotilting) subcategories. Also, they obtain a partial Auslander-Reiten correspondence between ∞-tilting (resp. cotilting) subcategories and coresolving (resp. resolving) subcategories with an -projective generator (resp. -injective cogenerator) in an extriangulated category.

Abstract:We propose a definition of higher inductive types in $(\infty,1)$-categories with finite limits. We show that the $(\infty,1)$-category of $(\infty,1)$-categories with higher inductive types is finitarily presentable. In particular, the initial $(\infty,1)$-category with higher inductive types exists. We prove a form of canonicity: the global section functor for the initial $(\infty,1)$-category with higher inductive types preserves higher inductive types.

A characterisation of higher torsion classes

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian length category containing a $d$-cluster tilting subcategory $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that a subcategory of $\mathcal{M}$ is a $d$-torsion class if and only if it is closed under $d$-extensions and $d$-quotients. This generalises an important result for classical torsion classes. As an application, we prove that the $d$-torsion classes in $\mathcal{M}$ form a complete lattice. Moreover, we use the characterisation to classify the $d$-torsion classes associated to higher Auslander algebras of type $\mathbb{A}$, and give an algorithm to compute them explicitly. The classification is furthermore extended to the setup of higher Nakayama algebras.

Abstract:A finite EI category is a small category with finitely many morphisms such that every endomorphism is an isomorphism. They include finite groups, finite posets and free categories of finite quivers as special cases. In this paper we consider the representation types of finite EI categories, describe some criteria for finite representation type, and use them to classify the representation types of several classes of finite EI categories with extra properties.

Abstract:The paper deals with the theoretical investigation of intrasubband plasmons in an array of quantum wires, consisting of a finite number of quantum wires, arranged at an equal distance from each other and placed into an external magnetic field. Two types of quantum wire array are under consideration: an ordered array of quantum wires with equal electron densities in all quantum wires and weakly disordered array of quantum wires, which is characterized by the fact that the density of electrons of one defect quantum wire was different from that of other quantum wires. For the ordered array of quantum wires, placed into the external magnetic field, the nonmonotonical dependence of plasmon frequency upon the 1D density of electrons in quantum wires is predicted. For high magnetic field the existence of 1D electron density ranges, in which plasmon modes do not exist, is shown. For the weakly disordered array of quantum wires the existence of the local plasmon modes, which properties differ from those of usual modes, is found. At high magnetic field the disappearance of the local plasmon modes at certain ranges of 1D electron density in defect quantum wire is shown.

R*-categories: The Hilbert-space analogue of abelian categories

Abstract:This article introduces R*-categories: an abstraction of categories exhibiting the "algebraic" aspects of the theory of Hilbert spaces. Notably, finite biproducts in R*-categories can be orthogonalised using the Gram-Schmidt process, and generalised notions of positivity and contraction support a variant of Sz.-Nagy's unitary dilation theorem. Underpinning these generalisations is the structure of an involutive identity-on-objects contravariant endofunctor, which encodes adjoints of morphisms. The R*-category axioms are otherwise inspired by those for abelian categories, comprising a few simple properties of products and kernels. Additivity is not assumed, but nevertheless follows. In fact, the similarity with abelian categories runs deeper: R*-categories are quasi-abelian and thus homological. Examples include the categories of finite-dimensional inner product modules over a partially ordered division ring, and the categories of self-dual Hilbert modules over a W*-algebra.

Non Hilbertian (Lorentzian) Length Spaces

Abstract:In this note, the idea of finite dimensional $L^p$ spaces is transferred to Lorentzian length spaces to provide an example that is locally nowhere Minkowskian. Looking at the sectional curvature bounds of this example leads to the more general statement that normed spaces in which the norm does not come from an inner product, have no sectional curvature bounds. This statement holds in the Riemannian and Lorentzian cases. In addition, the Lorentzian $L^p$ space can be used as an example in the context of Lorentzian Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, to show that unbounded sectional curvature or geodesic regularity is in general not preserved in the GH limit, and as an example of a sequence of uniform bounded length spaces which are not GH pre-compact.
