Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.
On the wave nature of matter: A transition from classical mechanics to quantum mechanics

Abstract:Following the spirit of de Broglie and Einstein, we think the concepts of matter and radiation can be unified. We know a particle propagates like a wave; its motion is described by certain wave equations. At this point, it is not clear what the wave function represents. Besides the statistical meaning suggested by the Copenhagen interpretation, does the wave function represent any physical motion? For photon, we know it is an electro-magnetic wave. But what about particles with rest mass, such as an electron? To investigate the physical nature of matter wave, we propose that: (1) Like the photon, a particle is an excitation wave of a real physical field. (2) Different types of particles are different excitation modes of the same field. Based on this thinking, we show that the concept of quantum mechanics can be a natural extension of classical mechanics. By critically analyzing the transition from classical physics to quantum physics, we found a new physical meaning for the quantum wave function. This work suggests that various quantum wave equations, including the Klein-Gordon equation, the Dirac equation and the Schrodinger equation, could have a common base relating to the Basic Wave Equation of the matter wave. This work has some interesting implications. It suggests a possible way to explain the origin of visible matters and dark matters in our universe.

Abstract:The article explores challenges presented by revelations in physics and the questions they provoke concerning reality. It sheds light on the disparity between the indefinite nature of quantum reality and our perception of classical reality. The necessity for transition from the quantum to classical reality is underscored, alongside difficulties of observer intervention and the complexities introduced by the objective collapse theory. The work introduces a pioneering approach of decoherence within the framework of universal wave function density matrices. It deploys entanglement among three primary quantum subsystems: mass particles, massless particles, and the human body system. This gives rise to a Von Neumann chain of correlated systems, wherein neglecting one system renders the other two in mixed states. Here the cohered massless system and the animate being constitute subjects of our perceptions. Within the body, the distributions of quantum particle wave packets are highly localized due to entanglement and chemical potential, satisfying the Ehrenfest condition, wherein the thermal deBroglie wavelength scale is considerably smaller than their domain in the body. Thus, each microstate of the body quantum particle ensemble can be analogously represented as a statistical mechanics particle ensemble or likened to microstates in the Debye statistical model. In the statistical mechanics perspective, life represents a macrostate characterized by thermodynamics parameters, and chemical potential. The life macrostate autonomously processes an environment corresponding to a mixed state alternative of its entangled quantum world counterpart, which appears in the stream of consciousness. The quantum universe persists, evolving deterministically, and the classical (macroscopic) universe is its realization statistical by the fundamental predicate of life discerned by the brain; our elusive world.

Abstract:There are complex pressures from many sources in physics for questioning whether space-time is a fundamental structure. Much of the impetus has come from considerations of cosmology and quantum gravity. Theories of quantum gravity almost all describe fundamental structures that are significantly non-spatiotemporal. In that setting, the motivation comes from high-level theoretical concerns that are quite far removed from experience. Much of the discussion is highly technical and has not penetrated into the philosophical literature.1 In philosophy, discussion of the possibility that space is not fundamental has centered on a particular proposal for the interpretation of quantum mechanics: David Albert’s wave-function realism (Albert , ). There, the discussion is conducted in the context of standard, nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and is quite narrowly focused on whether the virtues of wave-function realism outweigh those of, say, GRW or Oxford Everett. The status of space on Albert’s proposal has mostly been treated as a problem, and one that we would rather do without. There hasn’t been, either in the physics literature or in the philosophical literature, a clear articulation of the general impetus provided by quantum phenomena for the move to an ontology in which space is recovered as an emergent structure. That is what I will try to provide. I will suggest that there are signs in the most basic and familiar features of quantum phenomena that space (-time) is not fundamental. I will present simple low-dimensional examples that reproduce aspects of entanglement and complementarity and explore the difference between two kinds of explanation:one that looks for causal processes passing through the space in which the correlated events are situated, and one that derives them as lower dimensional projections of a higher dimensional reality. The chapter is meant to display in a simple setting a form of explanation that connects quantum phenomena to questions about the status of space. For those who

Abstract:We introduce the key ideas and mathematical tools central to modern discussions of collapse. We assume knowledge of basic quantum mechanics -- the Schrödinger evolution of states in Hilbert space, the Born probability rule, the Dirac formalism, and so on -- while explicating such ideas as projectors, density operators, Bell inequalities, entanglement and the Lindblad equation. In other words this work is a \emph{primer} in the simplest sense of that word: without taking a stand on the major questions, it is intended to make an enormous and growing body of research more accessible.

Abstract:In this paper I would like to outline what I think is the most natural interpretation of quantum mechanics. By natural, I simply mean that it requires the least amount of excess baggage and that it is universal in the sense that it can be consistently applied to all the observed phenomena including the universe as a whole. I call it the "Everything is a Quantum Wave" Interpretation (EQWI) because I think this is a more appropriate name than the Many Worlds Interpretation (MWI). The paper explains why this is so.

Abstract:We expose the Schrödinger quantum mechanics with traditional applications to Hydrogen atom. We discuss carefully the experimental and theoretical background for the introduction of the Schrödinger, Pauli and Dirac equations, as well as for the Maxwell equations. We explain in detail all basic theoretical concepts. We explain all details of the calculations and mathematical tools: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism for the systems with finite degree of freedom and for fields, Geometric Optics, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and WKB approximation, Noether theory of invariants including the theorem on currents, four conservation laws (energy, momentum, angular momentum and charge), Lie algebra of angular momentum and spherical functions, scattering theory (limiting amplitude principle and limiting absorption principle), the Lienard-Wiechert formulas, Lorentz group and Lorentz formulas, Pauli theorem and relativistic covariance of the Dirac equation, etc. We give a detailed oveview of the conceptual development of the quantum mechanics, and expose main achievements of the ``old quantum mechanics'' in the form of exercises. One of our basic aim in writing this book, is an open and concrete discussion of the problem of a mathematical description of the following two fundamental quantum phenomena: i) Bohr's quantum transitions and ii) de Broglie's wave-particle duality. Both phenomena cannot be described by autonomous linear dynamical equations, and we give them a new mathematical treatment related with recent progress in the theory of global attractors of nonlinear hyperbolic PDEs.

Abstract:There are pressures that are coming from a number of quarters in quantum cosmology to view space or space-time as an emergent structure. But in recent years in the foundations of standard, non-relativistic quantum mechanics, interpretations have emerged that treat space as emergent. My primary purpose is (i) to make explicit the considerations stemming from quantum mechanics alone, that are pushing in the direction of viewing space (or space-time) as an emergent structure, and (ii)to clarify exactly what it means to say that space is emergent in the sense that this chapter is interested inhere. Itdoes that by presenting some simple low-dimensional models that reproduce central features of quantum phenomena, and analyzing the examples with attention to the difference between two different kinds of explanation: one in which the correlations emerge from a more fundamental (and not ultimately spatial) description and one in which correlations are explained by influences that pass through the space in which the correlated events are situated.

Abstract:The standard description of the transition from quantum to classical mechanics presented in most text books is the proof that the quantum expectation values of position and momentum obey equations of Newtonian form. This is the Ehrenfest Theorem. It is combined with the requirement that wave packets remain localised to describe a single particle moving according to classical mechanics. Hence, the natural spreading of wave packets is viewed as a quantum effect. In contradiction to this view, here it is argued that the spreading, where different momentum components separate, is the signature of the quantum to classical transition. The asymptotic spatial wave function becomes proportional to the initial momentum space wave function, which mirrors exactly the well-known far-field diffraction pattern in optics. Trajectories, defined as the locus of the normals to the expanding wave front, are used to illustrate the transition from quantum to classical motion. Again this is the analogue of the wave to beam transition in optics. It is suggested that this analysis of the quantum to classical transition should be incorporated routinely into introductory quantum mechanics courses.mechanics courses.

Entanglement, non-locality, collapse, many worlds, many minds, and subjectivism have challenged generations of thinkers. Its approach can perhaps be placed in the stream of quantum logic, in which the "strangeness" of quantum mechanics is "measured" through the violation of Bell's inequalities and, from there, attempts an interpretative path that preserves realism yet ends up overturning it, restating the fundamental mechanisms of QM as a logical necessity for a strong realism.

Abstract:After the development of a self-consistent quantum formalism nearly a century ago there began a quest for how to interpret the theoretical constructs of the formalism. In fact, the pursuit of new interpretations of quantum mechanics persists to this day. Most of these endeavors assume the validity of standard quantum formalism and proceed to ponder the ontic nature of wave functions, operators, and the Schödinger equation. The present essay takes a different approach, more epistemological than ontological. I endeavor to give a heuristic account of how empirical principles lead us to a quantum mechanical description of the world. An outcome of this approach is the suggestion that the notion of discrete quanta leads to the wave nature and statistical behavior of matter rather than the other way around. Finally, the hope is to offer some solace to those older of us who still worry about such things and also to provide the neophyte student of quantum mechanics with physical insight into the mathematically abstract and often baffling aspects of the theory.

Abstract:In resisting attempts to explain the unity of a whole in terms of a multiplicity of interacting parts, quantum mechanics calls for an explanatory concept that proceeds in the opposite direction: from unity to multiplicity. It concerns the process by which what Sellars called the Manifest Image of the world comes into being. This process consists in the progressive differentiation of an intrinsically undifferentiated entity. By entering into reflexive spatial relations, this gives rise to (i) what looks like a multiplicity of relata if the reflexive quality of the relations is not taken into account, and (ii) what looks like a substantial expanse if the spatial quality of the relations is reified. If there is a distinctly quantum domain, it is a non-spatial and non-temporal dimension across which the transition from the unity of this entity to the multiplicity of the world takes place. Instead of being constituents of the physical world, subatomic particles, atoms, and molecules are instrumental in its manifestation. These conclusions are based on the following interpretive principle: whenever calculating probabilities calls for the addition of amplitudes, the distinctions we make between the alternatives lack objective reality. Applied to alternatives involving distinctions between regions of space, this principle implies that the spatiotemporal differentiation of the physical world is incomplete: the existence of a real-valued spatiotemporal background is an unrealistic idealization. This guarantees the existence of observables whose values are real *per se*, as against "real by virtue of being indicated by the values of observables that are real *per se*." Applied to alternatives involving distinctions between things, it implies that, intrinsically, all fundamental particles are numerically identical and thus identifiable with the aforementioned undifferentiated entity.

Abstract:A concise survey of the advanced unifying ideas of modern physics, namely, spontaneous symmetry breaking, quasiaverages, quantum protectorate and emergence was presented. The interrelation of the concepts of symmetry breaking, quasiaverages and quantum protectorate was analyzed in the context of quantum theory and statistical physics. The main aim of this analysis was to demonstrate the connection and interrelation of these conceptual advances of the many-body physics and to try to show explicitly that those concepts, though different in details, have a certain common features. Some problems in the field of statistical physics of complex materials and systems e.g. foundation of the microscopic theory of magnetism and superconductivity were pointed in relation to these ideas.

Abstract:Quantum physics, which describes the strange behavior of light and matter at the smallest scales, is one of the most successful descriptions of reality, yet it is notoriously inaccessible. Here we provide an approachable explanation of quantum physics using simple thought experiments. We derive all relevant quantum predictions using minimal mathematics, without introducing the advanced calculations that are typically used to describe quantum physics. We focus on the two key surprises of quantum physics, namely wave-particle duality, a term that was introduced to capture the fact that single quantum particles in some respects behave like waves and in other respects like particles, and entanglement, which applies to two or more quantum particles and brings out the inherent contradiction between quantum physics and seemingly obvious assumptions regarding the nature of reality. Following arguments originally made by John Bell and Lucien Hardy, we show that the so-called local hidden variables are inadequate at explaining the behavior of entangled quantum particles. This means that one either has to give up on hidden variables, i.e., the idea that the outcomes of measurements on quantum particles are determined before an experiment is actually carried out, or one has to relinquish the principle of locality, which requires that no causal influences should be faster than the speed of light and is a cornerstone of Einstein's theory of relativity. Finally, we describe how these remarkable predictions of quantum physics have been confirmed in experiments. We have successfully used the present approach in a course that is open to all undergraduate students at the University of Calgary, without any prerequisites in mathematics or physics.

Abstract:The argument of this article is threefold. First, the article argues that from its rise in the sixteenth century to our own time, the advancement of modern physics as mathematical-experimental science has been defined by the invention of new mathematical structures. Second, the article argues that quantum theory, especially following quantum mechanics, gives this thesis a radically new meaning by virtue of the following two features: on the one hand, quantum phenomena are defined as essentially different from those found in all previous physics by purely physical features; and on the other, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory are defined by purely mathematical postulates, which connect them to quantum phenomena strictly in terms of probabilities, without, as in all previous physics, representing or otherwise relating to how these phenomena physically come about. While these two features may appear discordant, if not inconsistent, I argue that they are in accord with each other, at least in certain interpretations (including the one adopted here), designated as "reality without realism", RWR, interpretations. This argument also allows this article to offer a new perspective on a thorny problem of the relationships between continuity and discontinuity in quantum physics. In particular, rather than being concerned only with the discreteness and continuity of quantum objects or phenomena, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory relate their continuous mathematics to the irreducibly discrete quantum phenomena in terms of probabilistic predictions while, at least in RWR interpretations, precluding a representation or even conception of how these phenomena come about. This subject is rarely, if ever, discussed apart from previous work by the present author. It is, however, given a new dimension in this article which introduces, as one of its main contributions, a new principle: the mathematical complexity principle.

Abstract:We present a geometrical way of understanding the dynamics of wavefunctions in a free space, using the phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics. By visualizing the Wigner function, the spreading, shearing, the so-called "negative probability flow" of wavefunctions, and the long-time asymptotic dispersion, are intuited visually. These results are not new, but previous derivations were analytical, whereas this paper presents elementary geometric arguments that are almost "proofs without words", and suitable for a first course in quantum mechanics.
