Abstract:The monogenic free inverse semigroup $FI_1$ is not finitely presented as a semigroup due to the classic result by Schein (1975). We extend this result and prove that a finitely generated subsemigroup of $FI_1$ is finitely presented if and only if it contains only finitely many idempotents. As a consequence, we derive that an inverse subsemigroup of $FI_1$ is finitely presented as a semigroup if and only if it is a finite semilattice.

Abstract:We study some nil-ai-semiring varieties. We establish a model for the free object in the variety generated by all commutative flat semirings. Also, we provide two sufficient conditions under which a finite ai-semiring is nonfinitely based. As a consequence, we show that the power semiring of the finite nil-semigroup is nonfinitely based, where W is a finite set of words in the free commutative semigroup over an alphabet X , whenever the maximum of lengths of words in W is and W does not contain the k th power of a letter. This partially answers a problem raised by Jackson et al. (J Algebr 611: 211–245, 2022).

Abstract:The class of nil-essential ideals is a generalisation of the class of essential ideals. Every nil-essential ideal of a reduced ring is essential. Therefore the intersection of all nil-essential ideals over a reduced ring $R$ is the socle of $R$. In this note, we apply this generalisation to give a new criteria of semisimplicity in terms of nil-essentiality of ideals.

Abstract:Let $S$ and $\mathcal{C}$ be affine semigroups in $\mathbb{N}^d$ such that $S\subseteq \mathcal{C}$. We provide a characterization for the set $\mathcal{C}\setminus S$ to be finite, together with a procedure and computational tools to check whether such a set is finite and, if so, compute its elements. As a consequence of this result, we provide a characterization for an ideal $I$ of an affine semigroup $S$ so that $S\setminus I$ is a finite set. If so, we provide some procedures to compute the set $S\setminus I$.

Abstract:We consider the general question of how the homological finiteness property left-FPn(resp. right-FPn) holding in a monoid influences, and conversely depends on, the property holding in the substructures of that monoid. This is done by giving methods for constructing free resolutions of substructures from free resolutions of their containing monoids, and vice versa. In particular, we show that left-FPn is inherited by the maximal subgroups in a completely simple minimal ideal, in the case that the minimal ideal has finitely many left ideals. For completely simple semigroups, we prove the converse, and as a corollary, show that a completely simple semigroup is of type left- and right-FPn if and only if it has finitely many left and right ideals and all of its maximal subgroups are of type FPn. Also, given an ideal of a monoid, we show that if the ideal has a two-sided identity element then the containing monoid is of type left-FPn if and only if the ideal is of type left-FPn. Applying this result, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a Clifford monoid (and more generally a strong semilattice of monoids) to be of type left-FPn. Examples are provided showing that for each of the results all of the hypotheses are necessary.

The Non-Nilpotent Graph of a Semigroup

Abstract:We associate a graph ${\mathcal N}_{S}$ with a semigroup $S$ (called the upper non-nilpotent graph of $S$). The vertices of this graph are the elements of $S$ and two vertices are adjacent if they generate a semigroup that is not nilpotent (in the sense of Malcev). In case $S$ is a group this graph has been introduced by A. Abdollahi and M. Zarrin and some remarkable properties have been proved. The aim of this paper is to study this graph (and some related graphs, such as the non-commuting graph) and to discover the algebraic structure of $S$ determined by the associated graph. It is shown that if a finite semigroup $S$ has empty upper non-nilpotent graph then $S$ is positively Engel. On the other hand, a semigroup has a complete upper non-nilpotent graph if and only if it is a completely simple semigroup that is a band. One of the main results states that if all connected ${\mathcal N}_{S}$-components of a semigroup $S$ are complete (with at least two elements) then $S$ is a band that is a semilattice of its connected components and, moreover, $S$ is an iterated total ideal extension of its connected components. We also show that some graphs, such as a cycle $C_{n}$ on $n$ vertices (with $n\geq 5$), are not the upper non-nilpotent graph of a semigroup. Also, there is precisely one graph on 4 vertices that is not the upper non-nilpotent graph of a semigroup with 4 elements. This work also is a continuation of earlier work by Okniński, Riley and the first named author on (Malcev) nilpotent semigroups.

Not all nilpotent monoids are finitely related

Abstract:A finite semigroup is finitely related (has finite degree) if its term functions are determined by a finite set of finitary relations. For example, it is known that all nilpotent semigroups are finitely related. A nilpotent monoid is a nilpotent semigroup with adjoined identity. We show that every $4$-nilpotent monoid is finitely related. We also give an example of a $5$-nilpotent monoid that is not finitely related. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a finitely related semigroup where adjoining an identity yields a semigroup which is not finitely related. We also provide examples of finitely related semigroups which have subsemigroups, homomorphic images, and in particular Rees quotients, that are not finitely related.

Abstract:It was proved by Oliveira and Silva (2005) that every finitely generated inverse subsemigroup of the monogenic free inverse semigroup $FI_1$ is finitely presented. The present paper continues this development, and gives generating sets and presentations for general (i.e. not necessarily finitely generated) inverse subsemigroups of $FI_1$. For an inverse semigroup $S$ and an inverse subsemigroup $T$ of $S$, we say $S$ is finitely generated modulo $T$ if there is a finite set $A$ such that $S = \langle T, A \rangle$. Likewise, we say that $S$ is finitely presented modulo $T $ if $S$ can be defined by a presentation of the form $\text{Inv}\langle X, Y \mid R, Q\rangle$, where $\text{Inv}\langle X\mid R\rangle$ is a presentation for $T$ and $Y$ and $Q$ are finite. We show that every inverse subsemigroup $S$ of $FI_1$ is finitely generated modulo its semilattice of idempotents $E(S)$. By way of contrast, we show that when $S\neq E(S)$, it can never be finitely presented modulo $E(S)$. However, in the process we establish some nice (albeit infinite) presentations for $S$ modulo $E(S)$.

Abstract:Let $S\subseteq \mathbb N^p$ be a semigroup, any $P\subseteq S$ is an ideal of $S$ if $P+S\subseteq P$, and an $I(S)$-semigroup is the affine semigroup $P\cup \{0\}$, with $P$ an ideal of $S$. We characterise the $I(S)$-semigroups and the ones that also are $\mathcal C$-semigroups. Moreover, some algorithms are provided to compute all the $I(S)$-semigroups satisfying some properties. From a family of ideals of $S$, we introduce the affine semigroups with maximal embedding dimension, characterising them and describing some families.

On semisubtractive ideals of semirings

Abstract:Our aim in this paper is to explore semisubtractive ideals of semirings. We prove that they form a complete modular lattice. We introduce Golan closures and prove some of their basic properties. We explore the relations between $Q$-ideals and semisubtractive ideals of semirings, and also study them in $s$-local semirings. We introduce two subclasses of semisubtractive ideals: $s$-strongly irreducible and $s$-irreducible, and provide various representation theorems. By endowing a topology on the set of semisubtractive ideals, we prove that the space is $T_0$, sober, connected, and quasi-compact. We also briefly study continuous maps between semisubtractive spaces. We construct $s$-congruences and prove a bijection between these congruences and semisubtractive ideals.

Abstract:Regular abelian semigroups are isomorphic to a direct product of an abelian group and a rectangular band (Warne, 1994). Seeking for a similar result for nilpotency, solvability and supernilpotency of regular semigroups, we obtain that analogous statement is true only in orthodox semigroups. We provide an example that shows that the same does not have to be true in regular semigroups that are not orthodox.

Abstract:Motivated by situations in which the removal of a zero (a.k.a., an absorbing element) from a semigroup yields a subsemigroup with another zero, sets of quasi-zeros (a.k.a., quasi-absorbing elements) are introduced as well as primitive elements, minimal ideals and simple semigroups all with respect to a given ideal. Abstract:An ordered semigroup $S$ is right $\pi$-inverse if it is $\pi$-inverse but not conversely. So the question arises under what condition the converse holds. In this paper we study nil-extensions of simple and right $\pi$-inverse ordered semigroups and prove that $S$ is right $\pi$-inverse if and only if $S$ is $\pi$-inverse in a $t$-Archimedean ordered semigroup. Moreover, we characterize complete semilattice of nil-extensions of simple and right $\pi$-inverse ordered semigroups.

Abstract:Let $A\subseteq B$ be a $C^*$-inclusion. We give efficient conditions under which $A$ separates ideals in $B$, and $B$ is purely infinite if every positive element in $A$ is properly infinite in $B$. We specialise to the case when $B$ is a crossed product for an inverse semigroup action by Hilbert bimodules or a section $C^*$-algebra of a Fell bundle over an étale, possibly non-Hausdorff, groupoid. Then our theory works provided $B$ is the recently introduced essential crossed product and the action is essentially exact and residually aperiodic or residually topologically free. These last notions are developed in the article.

Abstract:We study algebraic properties of the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ of finite partial order isomorphisms of the rank $\leq n$ of an infinite linearly ordered set $(L,\leqslant)$. In particular we describe its idempotents, the natural partial order and Green's relations on $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$. It is proved that the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ is stable and it contains tight ideal series. Moreover, we show that the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ admits only Rees' congruences and every its homomorphic image is a semigroup with tight ideal series.

On Semi-Nil Clean Rings with Applications

Abstract:We investigate the notion of \textit{semi-nil clean} rings, defined as those rings in which each element can be expressed as a sum of a periodic and a nilpotent element. Among our results, we show that if $R$ is a semi-nil clean NI ring, then $R$ is periodic. Additionally, we demonstrate that every group ring $RG$ of a nilpotent group $G$ over a weakly 2-primal ring $R$ is semi-nil clean if, and only if, $R$ is periodic and $G$ is locally finite. Moreover, we also study those rings in which every unit is a sum of a periodic and a nilpotent element, calling them \textit{unit semi-nil clean} rings. As a remarkable result, we show that if $R$ is an algebraic algebra over a field, then $R$ is unit semi-nil clean if, and only if, $R$ is periodic. Besides, we explore those rings in which non-zero elements are a sum of a torsion element and a nilpotent element, naming them \textit{t-fine} rings, which constitute a proper subclass of the class of all fine rings. One of the main results is that matrix rings over t-fine rings are again t-fine rings.
