Abstract:Neptune was telescopically discovered by Johan Gottfried Galle and Heinrich Louis d'Arrest in Berlin on 23 September 1846 based on the prediction by Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier. The role German astronomers played in the discovery has often been overshadowed by the controversies that erupted in England and France after the discovery. However, their role was crucial, not only in bringing about the discovery in the first place, but also in resolving some of the post-discovery controversies that erupted around priority for the prediction and naming of the planet. German astronomers in Central and Eastern Europe possessed some of the best telescopes of the day and had established themselves over several decades as being at the forefront of observational astronomy. They had produced the star charts that in the end proved indispensable for allowing identification of the planet, while a German publication, Astronomische Nachrichten, published by H. C. Schumacher in Altona, in the vicinity of Hamburg, then part of the Kingdom of Denmark, served as the journal of record. The general neglect of the German part of the story is most strongly attested by the inaccuracies concerning what actually happened on discovery night, which were long propagated in the English-speaking literature. Notably, for 30 years after the discovery, it was not appreciated that there were two observers, while the role of the sky map used was often exaggerated. This chapter sets forth a more complete picture, and in particular emphasises more than previous accounts the critical role of d'Arrest, arguing that he should be celebrated as a co-discoverer. In addition, evidence presented here, much of it not previously available in the English-speaking literature, shows that the name "Neptune" was eventually accepted throughout the scientific community based on German precedents.

Abstract:The study of the differences detected between the observed and the predicted positions of Uranus taking only the ancient planets into account led to the discovery of planet Neptune in 1846. This event remains one of the best accomplishments ever achieved in the history of Astronomy and Classical Mechanics. In this paper, we study the perturbations in the orbit of Uranus due to Neptune and its effects from a modern numerical point of view of the $N$-body problem. The effects induced by Pluto in the orbit of Neptune, as the historical search for a ninth planet in the Solar System (recently boostered again with the hypothesis of the so-called Planet Nine) back in the days was propelled by some supposed small inconsistencies in the orbit of the ice giants, are also analyzed.

Abstract:My strategy for writing this autobiography is to use examples of how working on seemingly different projects can often lead to outcomes more important than originally envisioned. Serendipity is a happy accident—specifically, the accident of discovering something useful without directly looking for it. This often occurs when two research projects converge unexpectedly. The main text contains examples of how serendipity has led me to important discoveries, including (a) finding surprisingly high 228Ra activities in the ocean; (b) developing a means of rapidly and quantitatively extracting radium from seawater; (c) devising a rapid, sensitive method of measuring 224Ra and 223Ra; (d) realizing the scale and biogeochemical importance of submarine groundwater discharge; and (e) conceiving a method to estimate the total flux of submarine groundwater discharge to the Atlantic Ocean. The Supplemental Material fleshes out details of these discoveries and places them in the context of my other investigations.

What Makes A Discovery

Abstract:In this contribution to the proceedings of the 182nd Nobel Symposium, I reflect on the concept of "discovery" as it is used by physicists and astronomers. In particular, I comment on how the scientific community distinguishes discoveries from propositions that are supported only by lesser forms of evidence, emphasizing the social nature of this process and remarking on the subjective factors that go into making such judgements. I advocate for an approach that is intentionally Bayesian in nature, in which individuals are encouraged to evaluate and publicly state their priors and to update them systematically. I close by applying these practices to the case example of the Galactic Center Gamma-Ray Excess.

Abstract:Did science, as we know it, have to be? The article explores a possible response in the negative, organized around a specific contingency: that of Greek mathematics or, even more specifically, that of the mathematics of the generation of Archimedes. The argument is that (1) Greek mathematics, seen against a cross-cultural comparison, is an anomaly, (2) the scientific revolution, as it in fact unfolded, was directly shaped by the anomaly of Greek mathematics, and (3) it is not clear that, absent Greek mathematics, an equivalent scientific revolution would have taken place. The argument is developed in some detail concerning the history of ancient Greek science, but more is said on the inevitably philosophical questions of counterfactuals in history and on the specific question of the contingency of science.

Abstract:Some European scholars in the second half of 18th century discussed the myth of Atlantis taking into account the studies of the evolution of the Earth and of the beginning and diffusion of civilization, in particular the beginning of astronomy. Atlantis was considered the cradle of the civilization, and while J.S. Bailly proposed that it was located in the Arctic and tried to convince Voltaire about his idea, G.R. Carli maintained the classical position in the Atlantic Ocean. Bailly's arguments and their criticism by Carli are of some interest, since they remind of the general problems that still plague cultural astronomy and archaeoastronomy. I will mention briefly the methodological problem of demonstration and evidence in these fields, and finally I will suggest a possible psychological limit when dealing with these topics.

Abstract:Abstract In 1869, two distinguished scientists, Dimitri Mendeleev and Lothar Meyer, discovered a certain periodicity among the chemical characteristics of the then known elements. Both developed first versions of the periodic table, independently. In the wake of the 150th anniversary, UNESCO proclaimed 2019 the “International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements”. Two lucid and detailed studies on the periodic table—accompanied by smaller studies on the occasion of the anniversary—have been published, recently, one of them analysing the scientific history, contributing to the (philosophical) theory of science (Eric Scerri), the other analysing the structures, patterns, and irregularities of the table (Geoff Rayner-Canham). Both studies are profound and vivid examples how scientific progress works. They illustrate that even in hard sciences—mirroring Merton’s concept of middle range theory—the required degree of exactness can remain on an intermediate level, as imperfection allows interpretations which could not (yet) be reached by pure mathematics and logic. Both of these brilliant studies provide valuable material, especially for a social science, to better understand how scientific ideas develop, how the power of visualization helps shape ideas, and how contingency is absorbed by the scientific process.

Abstract:In 2008 Nico van Kampen wrote in his letter {\it The scandal of quantum mechanics}: ``The scandal is that there are still many articles, discussions and textbooks, which advertise various interpretations and philosophical profundities." Not much has changed since then, while social media have given a platform for more of what Nico would term ``a scandal''. A detailed viewpoint is presented on the status of quantum mechanics, distilled from two decades of work with Armen Allahverdyan and Roger Balian on the dynamical solution of Curie-Weiss models for quantum measurement. It embodies a certain minimal form of the statistical interpretation and stays clear of ontological connections. Along the way, comments on various related subjects, terms and interpretations are given.

Abstract:Novelties are part of our daily lives. We constantly adopt new technologies, conceive new ideas, meet new people, experiment with new situations. Occasionally, we as individuals, in a complicated cognitive and sometimes fortuitous process, come up with something that is not only new to us, but to our entire society so that what is a personal novelty can turn into an innovation at a global level. Innovations occur throughout social, biological and technological systems and, though we perceive them as a very natural ingredient of our human experience, little is known about the processes determining their emergence. Still the statistical occurrence of innovations shows striking regularities that represent a starting point to get a deeper insight in the whole phenomenology. This paper represents a small step in that direction, focusing on reviewing the scientific attempts to effectively model the emergence of the new and its regularities, with an emphasis on more recent contributions: from the plain Simon's model tracing back to the 1950s, to the newest model of Polya's urn with triggering of one novelty by another. What seems to be key in the successful modelling schemes proposed so far is the idea of looking at evolution as a path in a complex space, physical, conceptual, biological, technological, whose structure and topology get continuously reshaped and expanded by the occurrence of the new. Mathematically it is very interesting to look at the consequences of the interplay between the "actual" and the "possible" and this is the aim of this short review.

Abstract:In an age of discovery, the ocean voyage pushed back frontiers of the knowable, thereby providing a master trope for knowledge acquisition that, in Shakespeare, authorized the rupture of conventional dramatic form. This article charts the progress of that rupture and the corresponding enlistment of the audience's imaginative cooperation to complete the dramatic illusion. It then considers the kinds of knowledge attainable to those who cross the sea in Shakespeare's dramaturgy and ends by suggesting that as increasingly sophisticated staging facilitated the theatrical representation of wonders, the ocean voyage trope comes to portend a drama where material spectacle would unseat imagination.

Abstract:An interesting, yet unknown, episode concerning the effective permeation of the scientific revolution in the XVIII century Kingdom of Naples (and, more generally, Italy) is recounted. The quite intriguing story of Watt's steam engine prepared for serving a Royal Estate of the King of Naples in Carditello reveals a fascinating piece of the history of that Kingdom, as well as an unknown step in the history of Watt's steam engine, whose final entrepreneurial success for the celebrated Boulton & Watt company was a direct consequence. That story unveils that, contrary to what claimed in the literature, the first introduction in Italy of the most important technological innovation of the XVIII century did not take place with the construction of the first steamship of the Mediterranean Sea, but rather 30 years before that, thanks to the incomparable work of Giuseppe Saverio Poli, a leading scholar and a very influential figure in the Kingdom of Naples. The tragic epilogue of Poli's engine testifies for its vanishing in the historical memory.

The book is to be read in relation to the ongoing series of exhibitions entitled "Places & Spaces: Mapping Science" currently touring the world. The book also provides the scholarly background to the exhibitions. It celebrates scientometrics as the discipline in the background that enables us to visualize the evolution of knowledge as the acumen of human civilization.

Abstract:In this essay, I discuss an interdisciplinary science that is just blossoming: that of geo-neutrinos. I begin with a couple of episodes from the history of thought, showing the deep roots of Earth science and its many connections with microphysics. I then recall the stage of full maturity reached in the knowledge of neutrinos, which allows one to argue the full reliability of recent measurements. I conclude with a discussion of the state of the field and its prospects for the near future, and with a dedication to the memory of a colleague and friend, Giovanni Fiorentini, a pioneer of these studies.

Abstract:The paper “Kurt Vonnegut’s The Sirens of Titan: Human Will in a Newtonian Narrative Gone Chaotic” explores the notion of human identity in its relation with the issue of free will as portrayed by Vonnegut’s 1959 novel The Sirens of Titan. Written at the very threshold of the postmodernist period, Vonnegut’s novel invites a shift of perspective in the interpretation of ‘reality’ —namely, a transition from the modern Newtonian to a postmodernist chaotic scientific paradigm. The novel suggests an implicit counter-message parallel to and subtly undermining its apparent affirmation of determinism. For this purpose, the paper focuses on the way in which some passages in the novel reflect some of the major theories about the chaotic behavior of molecular systems, basically temporal irreversibility and the combination of chance and necessity in molecular creative processes. Finally, the paper analyzes the metaphysical macrocosmic implications of these theories as depicted in Vonnegut’s novel —firstly, as an answer to the individuals’ felt inability to find their identity through decision-making; and secondly, as a way out of constraining, totalizing explanations of the world and the collective paranoia which the search for those explanations may bring about.

Abstract:We present an overview of the art project Aganta Kairos (To Fish the Metaphysical Time). This project celebrates the neutrino, the ghost particle, which scientists consider a cosmic messenger and the artist regards as a link between people who care about their relationship to the cosmos and question their origins. The artwork is based on a performance of celebration and seeks to build a human community that encompasses different knowledge domains and interpretations of the universe. This intersection of knowledge is realized during the performance of placing a plaque, held with witnesses, and during subsequent exhibitions. Images, sounds, videos, and sculpture testify to the diversity of approaches to questioning our origins, ranging from traditional western science to ancient shamanism. The sites were selected for their global coverage and, for the South Pole, Mediterranean, and Lake Baikal, their connection to ongoing neutrino experiments. In December 2020, a plaque was installed at the South Pole IceCube Laboratory, the seventh and final site. We provide examples of images and links to additional images and videos.

Abstract:We illustrate Archimedes' method using models produced with 3D printers. This approach allowed us to create physical proofs of results known to Archimedes and illustrate ideas of a mathematician who is known both for his for his mechanical inventions as well as his breakthroughs in geometry and calculus. We use technology from the 21st century to trace intellectual achievements from the 3rd century BC. While we celebrate the 2300th birthday of Archimedes (287-212 BC) in 2013, we also live in an exciting time, where 3D printing is becoming popular and affordable.
