Abstract:We show that any weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 2-torus may be realized as the dynamics on a center-stable or center-unstable torus of a 3-dimensional strongly partially hyperbolic system. We also construct examples of center-stable and center-unstable tori in higher dimensions.

Abstract:Recent introduction of center vortices with 't Hooft flux on two torus compactification leads to a new semiclassical regime where confinement is analytically calculable. In this work, we investigate the stability of the classical minima for gauge fields under quantum corrections. Although the classical $Z_N \times Z_N$ symmetric minima is stable at small-$N$, because of the nature of the quantum corrections, it can be destabilized at sufficiently large-$N$. Using Morita equivalence, we switch to field theory on noncommutative torus instead of working with theory on torus with 't Hooft flux in a certain limit. Noncommutative Yang-Mills theory compactified on two torus leads to a tachyonic instability and it leads to the spontaneous breaking of translation symmetry. We discuss that spontaneous breaking of translation symmetry is identical to the $Z_N \times Z_N$ center symmetry breaking similar to an older version of large N twisted Eguichi-Kawai model. We compute the photon polarization diagram for noncommutative U(1) theory in the presence of adjoint fermions and show that they stabilize the tachyonic instability on the noncommutative torus and restore the broken symmetry.

Torus Actions on Moduli Spaces of Super Stable Maps of Genus Zero

Abstract:We construct smooth $\mathbb{C}^*$-actions on the moduli spaces of super $J$-holomorphic curves as well as super stable curves and super stable maps of genus zero and fixed tree type such that their reduced spaces are torus invariant. Furthermore, we give explicit descriptions of the normal bundles to the fixed loci in terms of spinor bundles and their sections. Main steps to the construction of the $\mathbb{C}^*$-action are the proof that the charts of the moduli space of super $J$-holomorphic curves obtained by the implicit function theorem yield a smooth split atlas and a detailed study of the superconformal automorphism group of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{1|1}$ and its action on component fields.

Tangent Space of the Stable And Unstable Manifold of Anosov Diffeomorphism on 2-Torus

Abstract:In this paper we describe the tangent vectors of the stable and unstable manifold of a class of Anosov diffeomorphisms on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ using the method of formal series and derivative trees. We start with linear automorphism that is hyperbolic and whose eigenvectors are orthogonal. Then we study the perturbation of such maps by trigonometric polynomial. It is known that there exist a (continuous) map $H$ which acts as a change of coordinate between the perturbed and unperturbed system, but such a map is in general, not differentiable. By "re-scaling" the parametrization $H$, we will be able to obtain the explicit formula for the tangent vectors of these maps.

Abstract:We construct examples illustrating that dynamically-defined distributions of holomorphic diffeomorphisms on compact complex manifolds are not necessarily holomorphic in any open subset. More precisely, for any $n\geq 5$, we construct a holomorphic fibered partially hyperbolic system on a complex $n$-fold, where the center distribution is not holomorphic in any open subset. For $n=3$ we demonstrate a contrast: the center distribution of any fibered holomorphic partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on a complex $3$-fold is holomorphic. In particular, any such a system is a holomorphic skew product over a linear automorphism on a complex $2$-torus.

Abstract:We present new explicit tight and overtwisted contact structures on the (round) 3-sphere and the (flat) 3-torus for which the ambient metric is weakly compatible. Our proofs are based on the construction of nonvanishing curl eigenfields using suitable families of Jacobi or trigonometric polynomials. As a consequence, we show that the contact sphere theorem of Etnyre, Komendarczyk and Massot (2012) does not hold for weakly compatible metric as it was conjectured. We also establish a geometric rigidity for tight contact structures by showing that any contact form on the 3-sphere admitting a compatible metric that is the round one is isometric, up to a constant factor, to the standard (tight) contact form.

Abstract:We characterize the actions of compact tori on smooth closed manifolds for which the orbit space is a topological manifold (either closed or with boundary). For closed manifolds, the result was originally proved by Styrt in 2009. We give a new proof for closed manifolds which is also applicable to manifolds with boundary. In our arguments, we use the result of Provan and Billera who characterized matroid complexes which are pseudomanifolds. We study the combinatorial structure of torus actions whose orbit spaces are manifolds. In two appendix sections, we give an overview of two theories related to our work. The first one is the combinatorial theory of Leontief substitution systems from mathematical economics. The second one is the topological Kaluza–Klein model of Dirac's monopole studied by Atiyah. The aim of these sections is to draw some bridges between disciplines and motivate further studies in toric topology.

Abstract:We establish a nonlinear analogue of a splitting map into a Euclidean space, as a harmonic map into a flat torus. We prove that the existence of such a map implies Gromov-Hausdorff closeness to a flat torus in any dimension. Furthermore, Gromov-Hausdorff closeness to a flat torus and an integral bound {on $r_M(x)$, the smallest eigenvalue of the Ricci tensor $\text{ric}_x$ in $x$}, imply the existence of a harmonic splitting map. Combining these results with Stern's inequality, we provide a new Gromov-Hausdorff stability theorem for flat $3$-tori. The main tools we employ include the harmonic map heat flow, Ricci flow, and both Ricci limits and RCD theories.

Abstract:We prove the existence of equilibrium states for partially hyperbolic endomorphisms with one-dimensional center bundle. We also prove, regarding a class of potentials, the uniqueness of such measures for endomorphisms defined on the 2-torus that: have a linear model as a factor; and with the condition that this measure gives zero weight to the set where the conjugacy with the linear model fails to be invertible. In particular, we obtain the uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy. For the n-torus, the uniqueness in the case with one-dimensional center holds for absolutely partially hyperbolic maps with additional hypotheses on the invariant leaves, namely, dynamical coherence and quasi-isometry.

Fully chaotic conservative models for some torus homeomorphisms

Abstract:We study homotopic-to-the-identity torus homeomorphisms, whose rotation set has nonempty interior. We prove that any such map is monotonically semiconjugate to a homeomorphism that preserves the Lebesgue measure, and that has the same rotation set. Furthermore, the dynamics of the quotient map has several interesting chaotic traits: for instance, it is topologically mixing, has a dense set of periodic points and is continuum-wise expansive. In particular, this shows that a convex compact set of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with nonempty interior is the rotation set of the lift of a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^2$ if and only if it is the rotation set of the lift of a conservative homeomorphism.

Abstract:We prove that for a torus homeomorphism isotopic to the identity and with a lift whose rotation set is an interval, either every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic orbit, or there exists an annular, essential, periodic set. In the latter case we give a qualitative description of the dynamics.

Abstract:Every volume-preserving accessible centre-bunched fibred partially hyperbolic system with 2-dimensional centre either (a) has two distinct centre Lyapunov exponents, or (b) exhibits an invariant continuous line field (or pair of line fields) tangent to the centre leaves, or (c) admits a continuous conformal structure on the centre leaves invariant under both the dynamics and the stable and unstable holonomies. The last two alternatives carry strong restrictions on the topology of the centre leaves: (b) can only occur on tori, and for (c) the centre leaves must be either tori or spheres. Moreover, under some additional conditions, such maps are rigid, in the sense that they are topologically conjugate to specific algebraic models. When the system is symplectic (a) implies that the centre Lyapunov exponents are non-zero, and thus the system is (non-uniformly) hyperbolic.

Abstract:We prove that a generic element of the Anosov-Katok class of the torus, $\overline{\mathcal{O}}^{\infty}(\mathbb{T}^2)$, acts parabolically and non-properly on the fine curve graph $C^{\dagger}(\mathbb{T}^2)$. Additionally, we show that a generic element of $\overline{\mathcal{O}}^{\infty}(\mathbb{T}^2)$ admits generalized rotation sets of any point-symmetric compact convex homothety type in the plane.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the existence of a pseudo-Kähler structure on the deformation space of properly convex -structures over the torus. In particular, the pseudo-Riemannian metric and the symplectic form are compatible with the complex structure inherited from the identification of with the complement of the zero section of the total space of the bundle of cubic holomorphic differentials over the Teichmüller space. We show that the -action on , given by rotation of the fibers, is Hamiltonian and it preserves both the metric and the symplectic form. Finally, we prove the existence of a moment map for the -action over .

Abstract:We construct and study the moduli of stable hypersurfaces in toric orbifolds. Let X be a projective toric orbifold and an ample class. The moduli space is constructed as a quotient of the linear system by . Since the group G is non-reductive in general, we use new techniques of non-reductive geometric invariant theory. Using the A-discriminant of Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky, we prove semistability for quasismooth hypersurfaces of toric orbifolds. Further, we prove the existence of a quasi-projective moduli space of quasismooth hypersurfaces in a weighted projective space when the weighted projective space satisfies a certain condition. We also discuss how to proceed when this condition is not satisfied. We prove that the automorphism group of a quasismooth hypersurface of weighted projective space is finite excluding some low degrees.

Multi-toric geometries with larger compact symmetry

Abstract:We study complete, simply-connected manifolds with special holonomy that are toric with respect to their multi-moment maps. We consider the cases where there is a connected non-Abelian symmetry group containing the torus. For $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, we show that the only possibility are structures with a cohomogeneity-two action of $T^{3} \times \mathrm{SU}(2)$. We then specialise the analysis to holonomy $G_{2}$, to Calabi-Yau geometries in real dimension six and to hyperKähler four-manifolds. Finally, we consider weakly coherent triples on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathrm{SU}(2)$, and their extensions over singular orbits, to give local examples in the $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-case that have singular orbits where the stabiliser is of rank one.

Constructible sheaves on toric varieties

Abstract:This paper gives an explicit computation of the category of constructible sheaves on a toric variety (with respect to the stratification by torus orbits). Over the complex numbers, this simplifies a description due to Braden and Lunts. The same computation is carried out for split toric varieties over an arbitrary field, for constructible étale sheaves whose restriction to each stratum is locally constant and tamely ramified. This gives the first explicit computation of an étale exodromy theorem in positive characteristic for a stratification over a partially ordered set of height greater than 1.

The torus trick for configuration categories

Abstract:We show that in codimension at least 3, spaces of locally flat topological embeddings of manifolds are correctly modelled by derived spaces of maps between their configuration categories (under mild smoothability conditions). That general claim was reduced in an earlier paper to the special cases where the manifolds in question are euclidean spaces. We deal with these special cases by comparing to other special cases where the manifolds have the form "torus" and "torus times euclidean space" respectively, and by setting up a torus trick for configuration categories.

Abstract:In this paper, we study transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional topologically neutral center, meaning that the length of the iterate of small center segments remains small. Such systems are dynamically coherent. We show that there exists a continuous metric along the center foliation which is invariant under the dynamics. As an application, we classify the transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on 3-manifolds with topologically neutral center.
