Abstract:It is well known that among all closed bounded curves in the plane with the given perimeter, the circle encloses the maximum area. There are many proofs in the literature. In this article we have given a new proof using some ideas of Demar.

Abstract:In this paper we study the regularity of closed, convex surfaces which achieve maximal affine area among all the closed, convex surfaces enclosed in a given domain in the Euclidean 3-space. We prove the C 1, α regularity for general domains and C 1,1 regularity if the domain is uniformly convex.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that there exists a unique perimeter minimizer among all piecewise smooth simple closed curves in $M_{\kappa}^2$ enclosing area $A > 0$ $(A \leq 2{\pi}$ if ${\kappa} = 1)$, and it is a circle in $M_{\kappa}^2$ of radius $AS_{\kappa} \left( \dfrac{ \sqrt{ A ( 4 {\pi} - {\kappa} A ) } }{ 2 {\pi} } \right)$, where $AS_{\kappa}(t) := t$ if ${\kappa} = 0$, arcsin$(t)$ if ${\kappa} = 1$, sinh$^{-1}(t)$ if ${\kappa} =-1$. We also prove the isoperimetric inequality for $M_{\kappa}^2$. We give an elementary geometric proof which is uniform for all three simply connected space forms.

Abstract:The isoperimetric problem is one of the fundamental problems in differential geometry. By using the method of the calculus of variations we show that the circle centered at the origin in $${\mathbb {B}}^2(1)$$ is a proper maximum of the isoperimetric problem in a 2-dimensional Finsler space of Funk type. We also obtain the formula of area enclosed by a simple closed curve in a spherically symmetric Finsler plane.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. It is known that a simply connected Riemann surface satisfies the isoperimetric equality if and only if it has constant Gaussian curvature. In this paper, we show that the circles centered at origin in the Randers Poincaré disc satisfy the isoperimetric equality with respect to different volume forms however, these Randers metrics do not necessarily have constant (negative) flag curvature. In particular, we show that Osserman's result [12] of the Riemannian case cannot be extended to the Finsler geometry as such.

Abstract:We establish sufficient conditions for existence of curves minimizing length as measured with respect to a degenerate metric on the plane while enclosing a specified amount of Euclidean area. Non-existence of minimizers can occur and examples are provided. This continues the investigation begun in [ABCDS] where the metric ds^2 near the singularities equals a quadratic polynomial times the standard metric. Here we allow the conformal factor to be any smooth non-negative potential vanishing at isolated points provided the Hessian at these points is positive definite. These isoperimetric curves, appropriately parametrized, arise as traveling wave solutions to a bi-stable Hamiltonian system.

Abstract:The discrete isoperimetric inequality states that the regular n -gon has the largest area among all n -gons with a fixed perimeter p . In this paper, we extend the discrete isoperimetric inequality to disconnected regions in the hyperbolic plane, i.e., we permit the area to be divided between regions. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions to ensure that the result holds for multiple polygons with areas that add up.

Abstract:We prove weighted isoperimetric inequalities for smooth, bounded, and simply connected domains. More precisely, we show that the moment of inertia of inner parallel curves for domains with fixed perimeter attains its maximum for a disk. This inequality, which was previously only known for convex domains, allows us to extend an isoperimetric inequality for the magnetic Robin Laplacian to non-convex centrally symmetric domains. Furthermore, we extend our isoperimetric inequality for moments of inertia, which are second moments, to $p$-th moments for all $p$ smaller than or equal to two. We also show that the disk is a strict local maximiser in the nearly circular, centrally symmetric case for all $p$ strictly less than three, and that the inequality fails for all $p$ strictly bigger than three.

The solution is always a polygon having all but one sides equal. The lengths of the sides are characterized through explicit equations. Abstract:We prove a universal inequality between the diastole, defined using a minimax process on the one-cycle space, and the area of closed Riemannian surfaces. Roughly speaking, we show that any closed Riemannian surface can be swept out by a family of multi-loops whose lengths are bounded in terms of the area of the surface. This diastolic inequality, which relies on an upper bound on Cheeger's constant, yields an effective process to find short closed geodesics on the two-sphere, for instance. We deduce that every Riemannian surface can be decomposed into two domains with the same area such that the length of their boundary is bounded from above in terms of the area of the surface. We also compare various Riemannian invariants on the two-sphere to underline the special role played by the diastole.

Abstract:Given a lamina $K$ whose boundary $\partial K$ is convex we define the Bonnesen functional by integrating over the position and orientation of a disk of radius $r$ its intersections with the lamina and its boundary. \[ B(r) = \frac{1}{2\pi}\int (\frac{n}{2}-\nu)dx\,dy\,d\theta =rL-A-\pi r^2\] where $n$ is the number of intersections of the boundary of $K$ with the boundary of the disk and $\nu$ (with values either 0 or 1) is the number of intersections of the interiors. Analyzing the interval on which $B(r)\ge 0$ leads to a number of isoperimetric inequalities. For example Santalo observed that $B(r)$ is non-negative on $[r_{in},r_{out}]$ where $r_{in}$, the inradius, is the largest disk contained in $K$ and $r_{out}$, the outradius, is the smallest disk containing $K$. For this configuration if the bodies intersect than their boundaries must intersect in 2 or more points (generically) so the integrand is always non-negative and $B(r)\ge 0$. In this paper we show that $B(r)\ge 0$ on the interval$[\rho_{in}, \rho_{out}]$ where these are the inner and outer radii of the annulus of minimal width which surrounds $\partial K$. In this case the integrand is not always positive but we carefully analyze the integral and use an ``averaging trick'' to balance regions where the integrand is negative with regions where the integrand is positive to show that $B(r)\ge 0$ The final isoperimetric inequalities obtained are not new, the same results have been obtained by cleverly cutting $\partial K$ and doubling it to create two centrally symmetric curves and analyzing those, but I believe that the averaging trick is new in this context. The paper also reviews the concept of ``positive centers'' and shows how the isoperimetric inequalities can be used to the show that the final shape of the curve shortening flow in Euclidean and Minkowski geometries are respectively the disk and the isoperimetrix.

Abstract:Inspired by a planar partitioning problem involving multiple improper chambers, this article investigates using classical techniques what can be said of the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of minimizers in a certain free-endpoint isoperimetric problem. By restricting to curves which are expressible as graphs of functions, a full existence-uniqueness-regularity result is proved using a convexity technique inspired by work of Talenti. The problem studied here can be interpreted physically as the identification of the equilibrium shape of a sessile liquid drop in half-space (in the absence of gravity). This is a well-studied variational problem whose full resolution requires the use of geometric measure theory, in particular the theory of sets of finite perimeter, but here we present a more direct, classical geometrical approach. Conjectures on improper planar partitioning problems are presented throughout.

Abstract:We show that the shortest closed geodesic on a 2-sphere with non-negative curvature has length bounded above by three times the diameter. We prove a new isoperimetric inequality for 2-spheres with pinched curvature; this allows us to improve our bound on the length of the shortest closed geodesic in the pinched curvature setting.

Abstract:We give an alternative, simple method to prove isoperimetric inequalities over the hypercube. In particular, we show: 1. An elementary proof of classical isoperimetric inequalities of Talagrand, as well as a stronger isoperimetric result conjectured by Talagrand and recently proved by Eldan and Gross. 2. A strengthening of the Friedgut junta theorem, asserting that if the $p$-moment of the sensitivity of a function is constant for some $1/2 + \varepsilon\leq p\leq 1$, then the function is close to a junta. In this language, Friedgut's theorem is the special case that $p=1$.
