Abstract:We prove that the operad of framed little 2-discs is formal. Tamarkin and Kontsevich each proved that the unframed 2-discs operad is formal. The unframed 2-discs is an operad in the category of S^1-spaces, and the framed 2-discs operad can be constructed from the unframed 2-discs by forming the operadic semidirect product with the circle group. The idea of our proof is to show that Kontsevich's chain of quasi-isomorphisms is compatible with the circle actions and so one can essentially take the operadic semidirect product with the homology of S^1 everywhere to obtain a chain of quasi-isomorphisms between the homology and the chains of the framed 2-discs.

Abstract:Abstract The Swiss-Cheese operads, which encode actions of algebras over the little n-cubes operad on algebras over the little $(n-1)$-cubes operad, comes in several variants. We prove that the variant in which open operations must have at least one open input is not formal in characteristic zero. This is slightly stronger than earlier results of Livernet and Willwacher. The obstruction to formality that we find lies in arity $(2, 2^n)$, rather than $(2, 0)$ (Livernet) or $(4, 0)$ (Willwacher).

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the Dunn-Brinkmeier~additivity theorem, which establishes a weak equivalence $\mathcal{C}_n \otimes \mathcal{C}_m \simeq \mathcal{C}_{n+m}$ for the little cubes operad $\mathcal{C}_n$. We introduce equivariant framed little disk operads, a new class of operads that simultaneously generalize the framed little disk operads and the little $V$-disk operads associated with a $G$-representation $V$. We prove that these operads satisfy an analogous additivity property, extending the classical theorem to settings involving group actions and framings.

Abstract:The paper concerns the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and the generating series of nonsymmetric operads. An analogue of Bergman's gap theorem is proved, namely, no finitely generated locally finite nonsymmetric operad has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension strictly between $1$ and $2$. For every $r\in \{0\}\cup \{1\}\cup [2,\infty)$ or $r=\infty$, we construct a single-element generated nonsymmetric operad with Gelfand-Kirillov dimension $r$. We also provide counterexamples to two expectations of Khoroshkin and Piontkovski about the generating series of operads.

Abstract:Using configuration space level Pontryagin--Thom constructions, we construct a simple Koszul self duality map for the little disks operad $\Sigma^\infty_+ E_n$. For a framed $n$-manifold $M$, we show that a compatible self duality map exists for $\Sigma^\infty_+ E_M$.

Abstract:Our aim is to introduce and advocate non-$\Sigma$ (non-symmetric) modular operads. While ordinary modular operads were inspired by the structure of the moduli space of stable complex curves, non-$\Sigma$ modular operads model surfaces with open strings outputs. An immediate application of our theory is a short proof that the modular envelope of the associative operad is the linearization of the terminal operad in the category of non-$\Sigma$ modular operads. This gives a succinct description of this object that plays an important role in open string field theory. We also sketch further perspectives of the presented approach.

Abstract:We give a description of unital operads in a symmetric monoidal category as monoids in a monoidal category of unital $\Lambda$-sequences. This is a new variant of Kelly's old description of operads as monoids in the monoidal category of symmetric sequences. The monads associated to unital operads are the ones of interest in iterated loop space theory and factorization homology, among many other applications. Our new description of unital operads allows an illuminating comparison between the two-sided monadic bar constructions used in such applications and "classical" monoidal two-sided bar constructions. It also allows a more conceptual understanding of the scanning map central to non-abelian Poincaré duality in factorization homology.

Abstract:Various compatibility conditions among replicated copies of operations in a given algebraic structure have appeared in broad contexts in recent years. Taking a uniform approach, this paper presents an operadic study of compatibility conditions for nonsymmetric operads with unary and binary operations, and homogeneous quadratic and cubic relations. This generalizes the previous studies for binary quadratic operads. We consider three compatibility conditions, namely the linear compatibility, matching compatibility and total compatibility, with increasingly stronger restraints among the replicated copies. The linear compatibility is in Koszul duality to the total compatibility, while the matching compatibility is self dual. Further, each compatibility condition can be expressed in terms of either one or both of the two Manin square products. Finally it is shown that the operads defined by these compatibility conditions from the associative algebra and differential algebra are Koszul utilizing rewriting systems.

Abstract:We introduce a construction that associates, to each finite dimensional k-vector space V, a family of projective k-varieties that comes equipped with the structure of a operad in the category of k-schemes. When dim V = 1, this operad contains, as a suboperad, the family of moduli spaces of stably marked rational curves. For general V, our operad contains the family of Chen-Gibney-Krashen moduli spaces of stably marked trees of projective spaces as a suboperad. We realize our operad as part of a larger theory that describes how to construct operads from suitable functors. Given a category C that satisfies conditions allowing us to consider the operation of "substituting a value into an argument" within C, and given any functor F on C satisfying a variant of right-exactness, we construct a version of a set-valued operad whose inputs are given by objects in C. When C happens to be the category of nonempty finite sets, we obtain operads in the classic sense. Finally, we show that in many cases it is possible to realize these operads as disjoint unions of quiver Grassmannians.

Abstract:We study operads with trivial $\mathbb{A}$-actions and prove an equivalence between the category of $\mathbb{A}$-trivial operads and that of pseudo-graded-Perm associative algebras. As a consequence, we show that finitely generated $\mathbb{A}$-trivial operads are right noetherian of integral Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and that every element in a prime $\mathbb{A}$-trivial operad is central.

Abstract:We generalize the classical operad pair theory to a new model for $E_\infty$ ring spaces, which we call ring operad theory, and establish a connection with the classical operad pair theory, allowing the classical multiplicative infinite loop machine to be applied to algebras over any $E_\infty$ ring operad. As an application, we show that classifying spaces of symmetric bimonoidal categories are directly homeomorphic to certain $E_\infty$ ring spaces in the ring operad sense. Consequently, this provides an alternative construction from symmetric bimonoidal categories to classical $E_\infty$ ring spaces. We also present a comparison between this construction and the classical approach.

Abstract:For O an operad in k -vector spaces, F O is defined to be the category of k -linear functors from the PROP associated to O to k -vector spaces. Given a binary operation μ ∈ O ( 2 ) that satisfies a right Leibniz condition, the full subcategory F O μ ⊂ F O is introduced here and its properties studied. This is motivated by the case of the Lie operad Lie , where μ is taken to be the generator. By previous results of the author, when k = Q , F Lie is equivalent to the category of analytic functors on the opposite gr op of the category gr of finitely-generated free groups. The main result shows that F Lie μ identifies with the category of outer analytic functors on gr op , as introduced in earlier work of the author with Vespa. Using this identification, this theory has applications to the study of the higher Hochschild homology functors related to work of Turchin and Willwacher.

Abstract:A complete study of an operad $\mathrm{NC} \mathcal{M}$ of noncrossing configurations of chords introduced in previous work of the author is performed. This operad is defined on the linear span of all noncrossing $\mathcal{M}$-cliques. These are noncrossing configurations of chords with arcs labeled by a unitary magma $\mathcal{M}$. The magmatic product of $\mathcal{M}$ intervenes for the computation of the operadic composition of $\mathcal{M}$-cliques. We show that this operad is binary, quadratic, and Koszul by considering techniques coming from rewrite systems on trees. We also compute a presentation for its Koszul dual. Finally, we explain how $\mathrm{NC} \mathcal{M}$ allows one to obtain alternative constructions of already known operads like operads of formal fractions and the operad of bicolored noncrossing configurations.

Abstract:We define an action of the operad of projective spineless cacti on each stage of the Taylor tower for the space of framed 1-dimensional long knots in any Euclidean space. By mapping a subspace of the overlapping intervals operad to the subspace of normalized cacti, we prove a space-level compatibility of our action with Budney's little 2-cubes action on the space of framed long knots itself. Our result improves upon previous joint work of the first author related to the conjecture that the Taylor tower for classical long knots is a universal Vassiliev invariant over the integers. As a corollary, we reprove the nontriviality of a certain Browder bracket class first detected by Sakai.

Abstract:A new hierarchy of combinatorial operads is introduced, involving families of regular polygons with configurations of arcs, called decorated cliques. This hierarchy contains, among others, operads on noncrossing configurations, Motzkin objects, forests, dissections of polygons, and involutions. All this is a consequence of the definition of a general functorial construction from unitary magmas to operads. We study some of its main properties and show that this construction includes the operad of bicolored noncrossing configurations and the operads of simple and double multi-tildes. We focus in more details on a suboperad of noncrossing decorated cliques by computing its presentation, its Koszul dual, and showing that it is a Koszul operad.

Operadic Dold-Kan correspondence and mapping spaces between enriched operads

Abstract:According to the Dold-Kan correspondence, the normalization functor determines a categorical equivalence between simplicial abelian groups and non-negatively graded chain complexes. Nevertheless, the same statement is no longer true when extending to the context of algebras over an operad. In spite of this, the existence of the Dold-Kan correspondence for operadic algebras can still be realized from a homotopy-theoretic perspective. This was indeed observed for $A_\infty$-algebras by Schwede-Shipley, and for $E_\infty$-algebras by Mandell, and more generally, for algebras over any $\Sigma$-cofibrant operad due to White-Yau. In the first part of the paper, we shall prove further that the normalization functor induces an equivalence between the $\infty$-categories of operads with non-fixed sets of colors, in the Dwyer-Kan homotopy theory framework. Subsequently, we delve into investigating the mapping spaces between enriched operads by relating them to mapping spaces between operadic bimodules via nice fiber sequences. The validity of the main statements is examined first for simplicial operads, and then for connective dg operads due to the operadic Dold-Kan correspondence.
