Abstract:In this note we derive some consequences from the Mari\~no-Vafa formula and the cut-and-join equation, these include unified simple proofs of the $\lambda_g$ conjecture and some other Hodge integral identities. We also describe a proof of the ELSV formula relating Hurwitz numbers and Hodge integrals by using the cut-and-join equation, following our proof of the Mari\~no-Vafa formula.

Abstract:Using a simple Viète-like formula for $\pi$ based on the nested radicals $a_k = \sqrt{2 + a_{k-1}}$ and $a_1 = \sqrt{2}$, we derive a set of the recurrence relations for the constant $1$. Computational test shows that application of this set of the Viète-like recurrence relations results in a rapid convergence to unity.

A formula for pi involving nested radicals

Abstract:We present a new formula for pi involving nested radicals with rapid convergence. This formula is based on the arctangent function identity with argument $x=\sqrt{2-{{a}_{k-1}}}/{{a}_{k}}$, where \[ {{a}_{k}}=\underbrace{\sqrt{2+\sqrt{2+\sqrt{2+\cdots +\sqrt{2}}}}}_{k\,\,\text{square}\,\,\text{roots}} \] is a nested radical consisting of $k$ square roots. The computational test we performed reveals that the proposed formula for pi provides a significant improvement in accuracy as the integer $k$ increases.

On the numerology of trigonometric polynomials

Abstract:This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Abstract:In this article, we develop nested representations for cosine and inverse cosine functions, which is a generalization of Viète's formula for $\pi$. We explore a natural inverse relationship between these representations and develop numerical algorithms to compute them. Throughout this article, we perform numerical computation for various test cases, and demonstrate that these nested formulas are valid for complex arguments and a $k$th branch. We further extend the presented results to hyperbolic cosine and logarithm functions, and using additional trigonometric identities, we explore the sine and tangent functions and their inverses.

Abstract:It is well known that zeta(2) = pi(2)/6 as discovered by Euler. We present the following two q-analogues of this celebrated formula: Sigma(infinity)(k=0)q(k)(1 + q(2k+1))/(1 - q(2k+1))(2) = Pi(n=1 infinity)(1 - q(2n))(4)/(1 -q (2n-1))(4), Sigma(infinity)(k=0)q(2k)- [(-1)(k) k/2]/(1 - q(2k+1))(2 )= Pi(infinity )(n=1)(1 - q(2n))(2)(1 - q(4n))(2)/(1 - q(2n-1))(2)(1 - q(4n-2))(2), where q is any complex number with vertical bar q vertical bar < 1. Abstract:Chebyshev polynomials and their modifications are attributes of various fields of mathematics. In particular, they are generating functions of the rows elements of certain Riordan matrices. In paper, we give a selection of some characteristic situations in which such matrices are involved. Using the columns and rows of these matrices, we will build the bases of the space of formal power series and the space of polynomials, the properties of which allow us to call them "Fibonacci bases".

Abstract:In this work, we consider the properties of the two-term Machin-like formula and develop an algorithm for computing digits of $\pi$ by using its rational approximation. In this approximation, both terms are constructed by using a representation of $1/\pi$ in the binary form. This approach provides the squared convergence in computing digits of $\pi$ without any trigonometric functions and surd numbers. The Mathematica codes showing some examples are presented.

On 'Best' Rational Approximations to $\pi$ and $\pi+e$

Abstract:Through the half-unit circle area computation using the integration of the corresponding curve power series representation, we deduce a slow converging positive infinite series to $\pi$. However, by studying the remainder of that series we establish sufficiently close inequalities with equivalent lower and upper bound terms allowing us to estimate, more precisely, how the series approaches $\pi$. We use the obtained inequalities to compute up to four-digit denominator, what are in this sense, the best rational numbers that can replace $\pi$. It turns out that the well-known convergents of the continued fraction of $\pi$, $22/7$ and $355/113$ called, respectively, Yuel\"{u} and Mil\"{u} in China are the only ones found. Thus we apply a similar process to find rational estimations to $\pi+e$ where $e$ is taken as the power series of the exponential function evaluated at $1$. For rational numbers with denominators less than $2000$, the convergent $920/157$ of the continued fraction of $\pi+e$ turns out to be the only rational number of this type.

Abstract:Approximation theory plays a central role in numerical analysis, undergoing continuous evolution through a spectrum of methodologies. Notably, Lebesgue, Weierstrass, Fourier, and Chebyshev approximations stand out among these methods. However, each technique possesses inherent limitations, underscoring the critical importance of selecting an appropriate approximation method tailored to specific problem domains. This article delves into the utilization of Chebyshev polynomials at Chebyshev nodes for approximation. For sufficiently smooth functions, the partial sum of Chebyshev series expansion offers optimal polynomial approximation, rendering it a preferred choice in various applications such as digital signal processing and graph filters due to its computational efficiency. In this article, we focus on functions of bounded variation, which find numerous applications across mathematical physics, hyperbolic conservations, and optimization. We present two optimal error estimations associated with Chebyshev polynomial approximations tailored for such functions. To validate our theoretical assertions, we conduct numerical experiments. Additionally, we delineate promising future avenues aligned with this research, particularly within the realms of machine learning and related fields.

Abstract:The parabolic trigonometric functions have recently been introduced as an intermediate step between circular and hyperbolic functions. They have been shown to be expressible in terms of irrational functions, linked to the solution of third degree algebraic equations. We show the link of the parabolic trigonometric functions with the Chebyshev radicals and also prove that further generalized forms of trigonometric functions, providing the natural solutions of the quintic algebraic equation, can be defined. We also discuss the link of this family of functions with the modular elliptic functions. 1

Abstract:A re-calculation of a known family of formulas of PI is carried out, revisiting the old Archimedes' algorithm. This allows to identify a general family equation and three new simple formulas of Pi in terms of the golden ratio PHI in the form of infinite nested square roots, with some geometrical properties that enhance the link between the circle and the golden ratio. Applying the same criteria, a fourth formula is given, that brings to the known Dixon's squaring the circle approximation, thus an easier approach to this problem is suggested, by a rectangle with both sides proportional to the golden ratio PHI.

Abstract:In math.CA/0211148 we observed that $\ln(4/ \pi)$ is an "alternating" analog of Euler's constant $\gamma$. Here we use the binary expansion of an integer to give a rational series for $\ln(4/ \pi)$ analogous to Vacca's series for $\gamma$. Also, using a known generalization of Vacca's series to other bases, we accelerate Addison's series for $\gamma$. Along the way, we give new proofs of Vacca's and Addison's formulas.

Abstract:The primary purpose of this article is to study the asymptotic and numerical estimates in detail for higher degree polynomials in $\pi(x)$ having a general expression of the form, \begin{align*} P(\pi(x)) - \frac{e x}{\log x} Q(\pi(x/e)) + R(x) \end{align*} $P$, $Q$ and $R$ are arbitrarily chosen polynomials and $\pi(x)$ denotes the \textit{Prime Counting Function}. The proofs require specific order estimates involving $\pi(x)$ and the \textit{Second Chebyshev Function} $\psi(x)$, as well as the famous \textit{Prime Number Theorem} in addition to certain meromorphic properties of the \textit{Riemann Zeta Function} $\zeta(s)$ and results regarding its non-trivial zeros. A few generalizations of these concepts have also been discussed in detail towards the later stages of the paper, along with citing some important applications.
