Abstract:We show that, for any given dimension $d\geq 2$, the range of distinct possible designs for periodic frameworks with auxetic capabilities is infinite. We rely on a purely geometric approach to auxetic trajectories developed within our general theory of deformations of periodic frameworks.

Abstract:A one-parameter deformation of a periodic bar-and-joint framework is expansive when all distances between joints increase or stay the same. In dimension two, expansive behavior can be fully explained through our theory of periodic pseudo-triangulations. However, higher dimensions present new challenges. In this paper we study a number of periodic frameworks with expansive capabilities in dimension $d\geq 3$ and register both similarities and contrasts with the two-dimensional case.

A new approach for efficient analysis of large finite periodic structures

Abstract:Periodic structures have attracted much attention in the past decades due to numerous applications such as metamaterials, antenna arrays, frequency selective surface (FSS), photonic band gap (PBG) or electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures, etc. Infinite periodic structures are impossible in a realistic fabrication. When truncating infinite periodic structures, discontinuities occur at the interface and surface waves will be excited according to mode conversion, which leads to the edge effect of finite periodic structures. The prediction of wave natures in the edge cells of finite periodic structures is an indispensable procedure during the design of finite periodic structures. The conventional element-by-element method is rigorous and suitable for small finite arrays. However, it requires heavy computational resources for very large arrays. The well-established infinite periodic approximation approach neglecting the edge effect, although reduces the computational domain to a unit cell, is not sufficiently accurate for engineering applications.

Abstract:The problem of detecting auxetic behavior, originating in materials science and mathematical crystallography, refers to the property of a flexible periodic bar-and-joint framework to widen, rather than shrink, when stretched in some direction. The only known algorithmic solution for detecting infinitesimal auxeticity is based on the rather heavy machinery of fixed-dimension semi-definite programming. In this paper we present a new, simpler algorithmic approach which is applicable to a natural family of 3D periodic bar-and-joint frameworks with 3 degrees-of-freedom. This class includes most zeolite structures, which are important for applications in computational materials science. We show that the existence of auxetic deformations is related to properties of an associated elliptic curve. A fast algorithm for recognizing auxetic capabilities is obtained via the classical Aronhold invariants of the cubic form defining the curve.

Abstract:We introduce a novel methodology for designing auxetic (negative Poisson's Ratio) structures based on topological principles and demonstrate it by investigating a new class of auxetics based on two‐dimensional (2D) textile weave patterns. Conventional methodology for designing auxetic materials typically involves determining a single deformable block (a unit cell) of material whose shape results in auxetic behavior. Consequently, patterning such a unit cell in a 2D (or 3D) domain results in a larger structure that exhibits overall auxetic behavior. Such an approach naturally relies on some prior intuition and experience regarding which unit cells may be auxetic. Secondly, tuning the properties of the resulting structures is typically limited to parametric variations of the geometry of a specific type of unit cell. Thus, most of the currently known auxetic structures belong to a select few classes of unit cell geometries that are explicitly defined in accordance with a specified topological (i.e., grid structure). In this work, we demonstrate a new class of auxetic structures that, while periodic, can be generated implicitly, i.e., without reference to a specific unit cell design. The approach leverages weave‐based topological parameters (A−B−C), which results in a rich design space for auxetics that was previously unexplored. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Auxetic metamaterials are architected structures that possess a unique property known as a negative Poisson's ratio. This remarkable characteristic enables them to expand or contract in a direction perpendicular to stretch or compression. Due to their exceptional attributes such as energy absorption and fracture resistance, these auxetic metamaterials hold great promise for various applications across multiple domains. However, the widespread development of these materials has been hindered by the absence of an efficient design method. Addressing this limitation, our work introduces a minimal 2D auxetic structure and a corresponding design approach that comprises two geometric transformations. This design method not only allows for the replication of existing auxetic structures but also facilitates the creation of novel structures. Additionally, it enables the classification of these structures into six distinct categories. To enhance the understanding and standardization of these structures, we propose a naming protocol and define their associated unit cell. Furthermore, we explore the possibilities of tessellations within this framework. Finally, we examine the auxetic structures from the perspective of surface strain, which is closely linked to the Poisson's ratio, the Bulk modulus and compressibility.

Abstract:A triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) is an implicit surface with high interconnection and smoothness. However, only a few studies have focused on achieving a controlled negative Poisson’s ratio of TPMS. In this study, on the basis of the Schwarz primitive (P) surface, 3D auxetic structures are successfully implemented using a dual-period function. A series of shape-controllable, dual-period, deformation functions are obtained by summarizing the characteristics of periodic deformation functions (trigonometric and sawtooth) and applying Bezier curve fitting methods. Then, with the geometry originating from the P surface, two kinds of 3D auxetic structure design methods are proposed. The mechanical properties of the auxetic structure are analyzed and verified based on the control parameters. The following conclusions are derived. (1) Both 3D auxetic structures exhibit excellent 3D negative Poisson’s ratio properties. (2) The Poisson’s ratio can be effectively adjusted by the control parameters. (3) Adjustment of the Bezier fitting curve can optimize the 3D auxetic effect, resulting in a similar Poisson’s ratio in different directions. (4) The mapping relationship between mechanical properties and structural parameters is obtained by discretization sampling, and it can serve as a guide for functional applications. Moreover, based on the Gyroid (G) surface and P surface, a heterostructure with positive and negative Poisson’s ratio structures is obtained and applied to a stem in the hip joint. The simulation proves that the heterostructure can effectively reduce the tensile stress area between the bone and the implant, thereby effectively preventing the failure of the bone implant.

Abstract:Auxetic lattices are interesting engineering materials due to Negative Poisson’s Ratio (NPR). However, auxetic lattices usually have extremely low stiffness and exhibit high anisotropy (E1 /E2 >>1), severely limiting their application in high-loading environments. Attempts at increasing the stiffness of lattices typically lead to a decrease in auxeticity and an increase in anisotropy. In the current study, using novel nesting strategies, modified Sinusoidal Re-entrant Honeycomb (SRH) microstructures are developed to enhance stiffness, retain the auxeticity and introduce nearly isotropic characteristics (E1 /E2 ∼ 1). Different Nested n-type (n = 0, 1,2, 3 and 4) microstructures have been studied. Translation studies involving 90° and 0° oriented lattices are undertaken to find the effect of these nesting along different lengths and combinations leading to enhanced stiffness with minor loss in auxeticity. The possibility of attaining a stiffness at least 1500 % greater than the empty lattices, while retaining significant auxeticity (Poisson’s ratio < -1) has been showcased. The proposed approach can also lead to the development of lattices that exhibit nearly isotropic characteristics. The proposed approach can be realized using the state-of-art capabilities of modern 3D printers. The proposed methods and modifications are simple yet very substantial in terms of property enhancement and can be extended to almost all types of lattices.

Abstract:The 3D auxetic buckling pattern in the compression process is used to design auxetic structures. However, obtaining this pattern is time consuming and unintentional. In this paper, three auxetic structures, namely, globally deformed cross-frustum (GC) structure, partially deformed cross-frustum (PC) structure, and core deformed cross-frustum (CC) structure are proposed on the basis of the 3D auxetic deformation equation. The GC structure and PC structure can stably realize the 3D auxetic property through finite element analysis and experimental verification of structures. The structural strength of the latter structure is 2–5 times greater than that of the former structure. The CC structure exhibits a 3D auxetic property during the entire compression process and has excellent structural strength, which is greater than that of the first two structures. The rotational pattern can be also realized by the CC structure within the specified parameter range.A soft crawling robot with a motion module and perception module is designed by using the proposed auxetic structures. The motion module of the soft robot is designed by using the GC structure, and the perception module is realized by using the CC structure. The combination of modules can realize different functions, including advancement and rotation. The robot can be rapidly fabricated by digital light processing and has potential application value in medical treatment and other fields.

Abstract:Auxetic materials, or negative-Poisson's-ratio materials, are important technologically and fascinating theoretically. When loaded by external stresses, their internal strains are governed by correlated motion of internal structural degrees of freedom. The modelling of such materials is mainly based on ordered structures, despite existence of auxetic behaviour in disordered structures and the advantage in manufacturing disordered structures for most applications. We describe here a first-principles expression for strains in disordered such materials, based on insight from a family of 'iso-auxetic' structures. These are structures, consisting of internal structural elements, which we name 'auxetons', whose inter-element forces can be computed from statics alone. Iso-auxetic structures make it possible not only to identify the mechanisms that give rise to auxeticity, but also to write down the explicit dependence of the strain rate on the local structure, which is valid to all auxetic materials. It is argued that stresses give rise to strains via two mechanisms: auxeton rotations and auxeton expansion / contraction. The former depends on the stress via a local fabric tensor, which we define explicitly for 2D systems. The latter depends on the stress via an expansion tensor. Whether a material exhibits auxetic behaviour or not depends on the interplay between these two fields. This description has two major advantages: it applies to any auxeton-based system, however disordered, and it goes beyond conventional elasticity theory, providing an explicit expression for general auxetic strains and outlining the relevant equations.

Abstract:Auxetic materials have a negative Poisson's ratio and are of significant interest in applications that include impact mitigation, membrane separations and biomedical engineering. While there are numerous examples of structured materials that exhibit auxetic behavior, the examples of engineered auxetic structures is largely limited to periodic lattice structures that are limited to directional or anisotropic auxetic response. Structures that exhibit a three-dimensionally isotropic auxetic response have been, unfortunately, slow to evolve. Here we introduce an inverse design algorithm based on global node optimization to design three-dimensional auxetic metamaterial structures from disordered networks. After specifying the target Poisson's ratio for a structure, an inverse design algorithm is used to adjust the positions of all nodes in a disordered network structure until the desired mechanical response is achieved. The proposed algorithm allows independent control of shear and bulk moduli, while preserving the density and connectivity of the networks. When the angle bending stiffness in the network is kept low, it is possible to realize optimized structures with a Poisson's ratios as low as −0.6. During the optimization, the bulk modulus of these networks decreases by almost two orders of magnitude, but the shear modulus remains largely unaltered. The materials designed in this manner are fabricated by dual-material 3D-printing, and are found to exhibit the mechanical responses that were originally encoded in the computational design engine. The approach proposed here provides a materials-by-design platform that could be extended for engineering of optical, acoustic, and electrical properties, beyond the design of auxetic metamaterials.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel approach to composite design by employing aperiodic monotiles, shapes that cover surfaces without translational symmetry. Using a combined computational and experimental approach, we study the fracture behavior of composites crafted with these monotiles, and compared their performance against conventional honeycomb patterns. Remarkably, our aperiodic monotile-based composites exhibited superior stiffness, strength, and toughness in comparison to honeycomb designs. This study suggests that leveraging the inherent disorder of aperiodic structures can usher in a new generation of robust and resilient materials.

Abstract:The quest for novel designs for lightweight phononic crystals and elastic metamaterials with wide lowfrequency band gaps has proven to be a significant challenge in recent years. In this context, lattice-type materials represent a promising solution, providing both lightweight properties and significant possibilities of tailoring mechanical and dynamic properties. Additionally, lattice structures also enable the generation of hierarchical architectures, in which basic constitutive elements with different characteristic length scales can be combined. In this work, we propose 1D- and 2D-periodic phononic crystals made of spatial frames inspired by a spider web-based architecture. Specifically, hierarchical plane structures based on a combination of frames with a variable cross-section are proposed and exploited to open and enhance band gaps with respect to their non-hierarchical counterparts. Our results show that hierarchy is effective in broadening existing band gaps as well as opening new full band gaps in non-hierarchical periodic structures.

Abstract:The design and the combination of innovative metamaterials are attracting increasing interest in the scientific community because of their unique properties that go beyond the ones of natural materials. In particular, auxetic materials and phononic crystals are widely studied for their negative Poisson’s ratio and their bandgap opening properties, respectively. In this work, auxeticity and phononic crystals bandgap properties are properly combined to obtain a single phase periodic structure with a tridimensional wide tunable bandgap. When an external tensile load is applied to the structure, the auxetic unit cells change their configurations by exploiting the negative Poisson’s ratio and this results in the tuning, either hardening or softening, of the frequencies of the modes limiting the 3D bandgap. Moreover, the expansion of the unit cell in all the directions, due to the auxeticity property, guarantees a fully 3D bandgap tunability of the proposed structure. Numerical simulations and analytical models are proposed to prove the claimed properties. The first experimental evidence of the tunability of a wide 3D bandgap is then shown thanks to the fabrication of a prototype by means of additive manufacturing.

Abstract:An infinite periodic framework in the plane can be represented as a framework on a torus, using a Z2$${\mathbb {Z}}^2$$-labelled gain graph. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the generic minimal rigidity of frameworks on the two-dimensional fixed torus T02$${\mathcal {T}}_0^2$$. It is also shown that every minimally rigid periodic orbit framework on T02$${\mathcal {T}}_0^2$$ can be constructed from smaller frameworks through a series of inductive constructions. These are fixed torus adapted versions of the results of Laman and Henneberg, respectively, for finite frameworks in the plane. The proofs involve the development of inductive constructions for Z2$${\mathbb {Z}}^2$$-labelled graphs.

Abstract:Lattice structures can exhibit unusual mechanical properties by appropriate design and arrangement of the microstructures, and have already found applications in areas such as tissue engineering, stretchable electronics, and soft robotics. However, the designed microstructures generally follow simple geometric patterns with constant curvatures and theoretical models are developed for each geometry particularly. It lacks a universal method to model and design the periodic lattice constructed from microstructures with varying curvatures. In this paper, we develop a universal approach to design polygonal lattices with a wide range of microstructures with varying curvatures using instant curvature and parametric functions. A finite deformation model is proposed for the microstructures and the corresponding lattices, which considers the wavy or curled microstructure, hierarchical geometry, and large deformation. Experiments and finite-element simulations are conducted to validate the theoretical model. All of Young’s modulus, stretchability, and Poisson’s ratio can be inversely designed using the developed theoretical model. Results show that the stretchability of the highly stretchable lattice can be further increased by more than 4 times using densely curled microstructure. The signs of Poisson’s ratio can also change with the axial strain by rationally designing the microstructures. By combining curve fitting and curvature and parametric functions, the mechanical behaviors of lattices constructed by bioinspired microstructures can also be predicted. The lattice structures are then demonstrated to reinforce a hydrogel with modulus increased by around 2 orders and act as a biomimetic soft-strain sensor. This work could aid the design of a hierarchical lattice and have potential applications in tissue engineering, stretchable electronics, and soft robotics.

Abstract:Based on the triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS), 3D auxetic structures are successfully implemented using a dual-period function. A series of shape-controllable, dual-period deformation functions are obtained by summarising the characteristics of periodic deformation functions and applying Bezier curve fitting methods. Then, with the geometry originating from the Schwarz primitive (P) of TPMS, the periodic shape transformation of TPMS is achieved using the dual-period deformation functions. The property (negative Poisson's ratio) of the auxetic structure is investigated based on the control parameters (the TPMS c value, periodic function eta, and deformation index gamma). The auxetic structures can exhibit excellent 3D negative Poisson's ratio properties, and the Poisson's ratio can be effectively adjusted. Moreover, a heterostructure with positive and negative Poisson's ratio structures is obtained and applied to a stem in the hip joint. The simulation proves that the heterostructure can effectively prevent the failure of the bone implant.

Abstract:Auxetic materials (materials with negative Poisson's ratio) and nanomaterials have independently been, for many years, two of the most active research fields in material science. Recently, these formerly independent fields have begun to intersect in new and interesting ways due to the recent discovery of auxeticity in nanomaterials like graphene, metal nanoplates, black phosphorus, and others. Here, we review the research emerging at the intersection of auxeticity and nanomaterials. We first survey the atomistic mechanisms, both intrinsic and extrinsic, that have been found, primarily through atomistic simulations, to cause auxeticity in nanomaterials. We then outline the available experimental evidence for auxetic nanomaterials. In order to lay the groundwork for future work in this exciting area, we close by discussing several future prospects as well as the current challenges in this field.

Abstract:Classical approaches to enhance auxeticity quite often involve exploring or designing newer architectures. In this work, simple geometrical features at the member level are engineered to exploit non-classical nonlinearities and improve the auxetic behaviour. The structural elements of the auxetic unit cell are here represented by thin strip-like beams, or thin-walled tubular beams. The resulting nonlinear stiffness enhances the auxeticity of the lattices, especially under large deformations. To quantify the influence of the proposed structural features on the resulting Poisson's ratio, we use here variational asymptotic method (VAM) and geometrically exact beam theory. The numerical examples reveal that 2D re-entrant type micro-structures made of thin strips exhibit an improvement in terms of auxetic behaviour under compression. For the auxetic unit cell with thin circular tubes as members, Brazier's effect associated with cross-sectional ovalisation improves the auxetic behaviour under tension; the enhancement is even more significant for the 3D re-entrant geometry. Thin strip-based auxetic unit cells were additively manufactured and tested under compression to verify the numerical observations. The experimentally measured values of the negative Poisson's ratio are in close agreement with the numerical results, revealing a 66% increase due to the nonlinearity. Simulation results showcase these alternative approaches to improve the auxetic behaviour through simple geometric engineering of the lattice ribs.
