Abstract:This paper introduces the requirements for power converters needed for particle accelerators. It describes the role of power converters and the challenges and constraints when powering magnets. The different circuit layouts are presented as well as the operating cycles. The power converter control and high precision definition are also introduced. This paper lists the key circuit parameters to be taken into consideration to properly specify a power converter that can be compiled in a functional specification.

An Integrated Design of Power Converters for Electric Vehicles.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel integrated power system for electric vehicles (EVs) to improve the power density and efficiency at a less cost. It integrates the on-board charger (OBC) and the low-voltage DC/DC converter (LDC) by common use of semiconductor devices, capacitors and magnetic components. Therefore, the volume and cost of the integrated system is reduced compared with the conventional two independent converters. The proposed system can operate in three modes: OBC standalone mode, LDC standalone mode and OBC-LDC simultaneous mode. The phase-shift control is the main control strategy for this system. For a light load, a PWM plus phase shift (PPS) control is added to provide expending soft switching range. As the most important integrated component, the transformer is designed by considering the soft switching ranges. The theoretical analysis of topology, operating modes, control strategy and transformer design are presented. A prototype integrating a 3.3-kW OBC and a 2-kW LDC is built to demonstrate the validity and advantages of the proposed system.

Abstract:The power converter control system has a great impact on the behavior of the high-speed permanent magnet generator system (HSPGS) due to the high operating frequency. In this paper, a 3-D modeling based on finite-element analysis directly coupled with a power converter control system is built in order to accurately evaluate generator performance. The influence of the control system current time harmonics on the 3-D flux distribution, the vector eddy current in rotor sleeve, and the iron loss of the machine are investigated. The analytical model is validated by experimental test results from a developed prototype of the HSPGS. The obtained results could provide a reference for the system-level design and investigation for the HSPGS in the further design.

Abstract:This paper proposes the theoretical analyses, design method, design process and design results of a high power bidirectional 48V-12V DCDC converter system in electric vehicle (EV) application. The design is divided into 3 levels that are topology level, control method level, and block level based on IC with 3 steps respectively. In topology level, full-bridge CLLC is chosen for its high efficiency and good stability. 8 stages are designed for full-bridge CLLC in one switching period. Topology design mainly focuses on determining resonant components by inherent frequency and quality factor. In control method level, FPD (Frequency, Phase shift, and Duty) influence the performance of the whole system in their own way and FPD control method is chosen for this system. In block level, a main control loop that consists of 3 interlaced loops is illustrated by functional blocks and achieved actually by IC design. The whole design is verified by analog IC simulation whose results confirm the basic function and expected performance of the system. The output voltage accuracy enters 0.1% range and efficiency is up to 99.15% in buck mode with full load. The performances of the converter system in other conditions are also competitive.

Abstract:The control system for compact single stage electrostatic accelerator for PM2. 5analysis of atmospheric pollutant was developed. The distributed control system based on TCP/IP protocol was established, and many kinds of protocols and bus technology were adopted for the data transmission. The software was developed with graphical programming methods for virtual instrument. A series of anti-interference measures were adopted to reduce the interference of high voltage ignition and other factors to the measurement and control system. The control system has the advantages of stable operation and strong anti-interference ability.

Abstract:This paper introduces an automatic control method designed to enhance the operation of electric vehicles, besides the speed tracking objectives, by including reliability and lifetime requirements. The research considers an automotive power converter which supplies electric power to a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The primary control objective is to mitigate the thermal stress on the power electronic Insulate Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs), while simultaneously ensuring effective speed tracking performance. To achieve these goals, we propose an extended H-inf design framework, which includes reliability models. The method is tested in two distinct scenarios: reliability-aware, and reliability-free cases. Furthermore, the paper conducts a lifetime analysis of the IGBTs, leveraging the Rainflow algorithm and temperature data.

Abstract:Despite the emerging multi-phase and multi-level converters, two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor-based power converters are still widely used in industrial applications in nowadays. Thus, its reliability is of significant importance for ensuring industrial safety. In this paper, a review of the possibilities to ensure the reliable operation of these power converters is presented. The possible approaches are categorized into two groups: condition monitoring and fault-tolerant control. The former approach performs the monitoring methods of power converters, which enables the identification of device degradation to be realized. Accordingly, the mechanisms, indicators, and measuring methods of degradation are demonstrated in this paper to assist the design of condition-based maintenance. In contrast, the latter approach is a post-fault one, where power converters remain the operation by activating the fault-tolerant units after faults are identified. For this approach, fault detection, fault isolation, and tolerant strategies are essential. Finally, the performance and cost-effectiveness of the two categories are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Machine protection, as part of accelerator control systems, can be managed with a 'functional safety' approach, which takes into account product life cycle, processes, quality, industrial standards and cybersafety. This paper will discuss strategies to manage such complexity and the related risks, with particular attention to fail-safe design and safety integrity levels, software and hardware standards, testing, and verification philosophy. It will also discuss an implementation of a machine protection system at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS).

Abstract:For the accelerator magnet power supply, usually the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is used to server as the controller for logic protection and control. Along with the development of modern accelerator technology, it is at rend to use fully-digit al control to the magnet power supply. It is possible to integrate the logic control part into the digital control component of the power supply, for example, the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The paper introduces two different methods which are designed for the logic protection and control for accelerator magnet power supplies with the FPGA as the control component.

Abstract:In the past few decades, the energy paradigms in many countries are experiencing significant change from fossil-based resources to cleaner renewables. It is expected that the scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced. This requires that the production, distribution and use of the energy to be as technological efficient as possible, and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, power conversion systems will continue to play an essential role. Using highly efficient power electronics in generation, transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with advanced controls, can pave the way for renewable energy resources. In view of this, some of the most promising renewable candidates like wind power and photovoltaic, which are becoming a significant part in the electricity production, are explored in this paper. Issues like technology demands, power converter topologies, and control structures are addressed. Some special focuses are also paid on the emerging trends in power electronics development for those systems.

Abstract:This paper introduces the Single Sided Matrix Converter (SSMC) as a reliable power electronic drive for Brushless de motors used in aerospace applications. The multiphase SSMC provides high reliability and fault tolerance with the penalty of more power devices. Dynamic Matlab simulations using a full model of the converter, machine and switching control algorithm are performed to investigate the fault tolerance of the multi-phase topologies.

Abstract:In many important energy conversion systems, the power electronic converters are proven to have high failure rates. At the same time, the failures of the power electronics systems are becoming more and more unacceptable because of the high cost of failures. As a consequence, an appropriate assessment of reliability performance for the power electronics is a crucial and emerging need, because it is the essential information for the reliability improvements, and thus reduction of the cost-of-energy. Unfortunately, there is still lack of suitable tools for the reliability assessment in power electronics. In this paper, an advanced design tool structure, which can acquire various reliability metrics of the power electronics, is proposed. The proposed design tool is based on the failure mechanisms in the critical components of the power electronics, and the mission profiles in the converter applications are also taken into account. Finally, a new evaluation and design example are demonstrated on a motor drive application.

Abstract:A set of power supplies (PS) with output power rated from 100 W up to 10 kW for electromagnets powering was developed. These PS have range of current tuning of 60-80 db with high accuracy (error should be less than 0,01%). Some types of power supplies have bipolar output current. The report will describe a set of unified embedded devices for control and measurements of PS incorporated into distributed control systems. These embedded devices includes DAC, ADC with multiplexers and status Input/Output registers. The devices include microprocessor and allow work with minimal host involving. This capability decreases traffic, provides synchronous tuning of all electromagnet elements of particle accelerator and increases reliability of entire system.

Abstract:Abstract The lower conduction power losses and the positive temperature coefficient that favours parallel connections, make Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) to be an excellent replacement of existing Silicon Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) technology. These characteristics combined with high switching frequency operation, enables the design of high-accuracy DC-DC converters with minimised filtering requirements. This paper investigates the design for a converter with high-accuracy current (0.9 ppm) supplying a 0.05 H electromagnetic load, aiming to achieve the accuracy without the use of active filters, by using SiC MOSFETs and a scalable module-based converter design.

Abstract:With the current popularity of Electric Vehicles (EV), especially in some critical EV applications such as hospital EV fleets, the demand for continuous and reliable power supply is increasing. However, most of the charging stations are powered in a centralized way, which causes transistors and other components to be subjected to high voltage and current stresses that reduce reliability, and a single point of failure can cause the entire system to fail. Therefore, a significant effort is made in this paper to improve the reliability of the charging system. In terms of charging system structure design, a distributed charging structure with fault tolerance is designed and a mathematical model to evaluate the reliability of the structure is proposed. In terms of control, a current sharing control algorithm is designed that can achieve fault tolerance. To further improve the reliability of the system, a thermal sharing control method based on current sharing technology is also designed. This method can improve the reliability of the charging system by distributing the load more rationally according to the differences in component performance and operating environment; FPGA-based control techniques are provided, and innovative ideas of pipeline control and details of mathematical reasoning for key IP cores are presented. Experiments show that N + 1 redundancy fault tolerance can be achieved in both current sharing and thermal sharing modes. In the current sharing experiment, when module 3 failed, the total current only fluctuated 800 mA within 500 ms, which is satisfactory. In the thermal sharing experiment, after module 3 failed, modules 1, 2, and 4 adjusted the current reasonably under the correction of the thermal sharing loop, and the total current remained stable throughout the process. The experimental results prove that the charging system structure design and control method proposed in this paper are feasible and excellent.

Abstract:Various modern control concepts have been developed over the last decades. Despite that, due to real-time computational constraints, standard linear controllers continue to dominate in industry applications of power converters. On the other hand, demanding applications (for example, mining excavating machines) can benefit from advanced performance offered by modern control schemes. To this aim, the current paper develops advanced control structures using principles of Optimal control, Predictive control, State Feedback control and Kalman Observer. Advantages of the proposed control schemes are demonstrated by simulation and experiment. Implementation of the proposed control in variable speed drives is discussed in detail, including examples of the software code.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel coupled converter with high-voltage insulation protection in magnetic isolated way by taking the case of heater/ignitor/keeper supply for powering discharge cathode in the space ion electric propulsion (EP) thruster. The topology, working principle and igniting timing, as well as the adaptive closed-loop control and heating-igniting interlock control are also illustrated. For the proposed converter, the coupled topology and control strategy only adopt three straddling magnetic components to realize all functions. Meanwhile, the number of electronic components suspending over the high-voltage side of beam supply is small enough. Additionally, the test on the coupled converter prototype shows that, the maximum efficiency is 88.6%, close to the traditional tightly coupled supply; the proposed converter could realize the function of heating/igniting/keeping for the discharge cathode under the magnetic isolated way and corresponding control strategy; and there is no "spark phenomenon" for the converter during low-pressure discharge test. Hence, the magnetic isolated way to obtain the physical separation between high-voltage and low-voltage side in the converter is useful to achieve the high-voltage insulation protection.

Abstract:Megawatt power electronics is an enabling technology for many important industrial applications, including renewable power generation and integration, flexible electric power transmission and distribution, medium-voltage motor drives, and locomotive tractions. Major obstacles still exist for further enhancing its capability and reliability. Part I concluded that the transient behaviors are the key to megawatt power electronics systems designs for superior overall performance, low de-rating requirements and high reliability. This paper builds on the perspective of transient behaviors and presents some key techniques for the design and control of megawatt power electronics converters for high capability and reliability. The techniques include effective utilization of the state-of-art active devices and passive components with optimal power device selections, transient circuit topologies, and energy-balance-based control strategies. Practical application examples are presented to validate the proposed design techniques and to demonstrate their effectiveness.
