Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 397-418, March 2024. We extend the notion of nonbacktracking walks from unweighted graphs to graphs whose edges have a nonnegative weight. Here the weight associated with a walk is taken to be the product over the weights along the individual edges. We give two ways to compute the associated generating function, and corresponding node centrality measures. One method works directly on the original graph and one uses a line graph construction followed by a projection. The first method is more efficient, but the second has the advantage of extending naturally to time-evolving graphs. Based on these generating functions, we define and study corresponding centrality measures. Illustrative computational results are also provided.

Abstract:We completely generalize previous results related to the counting of connected Feynman diagrams. We use a generating function approach, which encodes the Wick contraction combinatorics of the respective connected diagrams. Exact solutions are found for an arbitrary number of external legs, and a general algorithm is implemented for this calculus. From these solutions, we calculate many asymptotics expansion terms for a simple analytical tool (Taylor expansion theorem). Our approach offers new perspectives in the realm of Feynman diagrams enumeration (or zero-dimensional quantum field theory).

Abstract:Consider a family $\mathcal{T}$ of 3-connected graphs of moderate growth, and let $\mathcal{G}$ be the class of graphs whose 3-connected components are graphs in $\mathcal{T}$. We present a general framework for analyzing such graphs classes based on singularity analysis of generating functions, which generalizes previously studied cases such as planar graphs and series-parallel graphs. We provide a general result for the asymptotic number of graphs in $\mathcal{G}$, based on the singularities of the exponential generating function associated to $\mathcal{T}$. We derive limit laws, which are either normal or Poisson, for several basic parameters, including the number of edges, number of blocks and number of components. For the size of the largest block we find a fundamental dichotomy: classes similar to planar graphs have almost surely a unique block of linear size, while classes similar to series-parallel graphs have only sublinear blocks. This dichotomy also applies to the size of the largest 3-connected component. For some classes under study both regimes occur, because of a critical phenomenon as the edge density in the class varies.

Abstract:The numbers of spanning connected unicyclic subgraphs and spanning connected bicyclic subgraphs are essential parameters in studying network reliability. However, these two parameters have hardly been studied. Only in 1983, Liu studied the enumeration of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs, which is mainly calculated by the determinant of the cycle adjacency matrix. But for large networks, the calculation of the determinant of cycle adjacency matrix is extremely complex. In this paper, we present a reduction method to compute the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs of 2-separable networks. As an application, we enumerate the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs in fractal scale-free networks by linear algorithm. The exact expression of the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs is obtained. On this basis, the entropy of the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs is determined. This research provides helpful guidance for computing the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs of general 2-connected networks.

Abstract:There has been much recent interest in random graphs sampled uniformly from the n-vertex graphs in a suitable minor-closed class, such as the class of all planar graphs. Here we use combinatorial and probabilistic methods to investigate a more general model. We consider random graphs from a `well-behaved' class of graphs: examples of such classes include all minor-closed classes of graphs with 2-connected excluded minors (such as forests, series-parallel graphs and planar graphs), the class of graphs embeddable on any given surface, and the class of graphs with at most k vertex-disjoint cycles. Also, we give weights to edges and components to specify probabilities, so that our random graphs correspond to the random cluster model, appropriately conditioned. We find that earlier results extend naturally in both directions, to general well-behaved classes of graphs, and to the weighted framework, for example results concerning the probability of a random graph being connected; and we also give results on the 2-core which are new even for the uniform (unweighted) case.

Abstract:We present upper and lower bounds for the number $i_n$ of interval graphs on $n$ vertices. Answering a question posed by Hanlon, we show that the ordinary generating function $I(x) = \sum_{n\ge 0} i_n\,x^n$ for the number $i_n$ of $n$-vertex interval graphs has radius of convergence zero. We also show that the exponential generating function $J(x) = \sum_{n\ge 0} i_n\,x^n/n!$ has radius of convergence at least $1/2$.

Abstract:The simple connected graphs may be classified by their cycle composition (number and lengths of cycles). This work derives the counting series of the simple connected graphs that have cycles of unrestricted number and length, but no overlapping cycles. Cycle pairs of these graphs of interest must not have common nodes or edges. The recipe of counting these graphs is based on the counting series of the associated planted graphs, multisets of planted graphs, a recursive synthesis of enriched trees, and a generalized Otter's formula that maps the underlying rooted block graphs to the underlying block graphs.

Bicolored point-determining graphs are point-determining graphs whose vertices are properly colored with white and black. We use the combinatorial theory of species to enumerate these graphs as well as the connected cases.

Abstract:Let G be a graph and di be the degree of a vertex vi in G . For a symmetric real function f(x,y) , one can get an edge-weighted graph in such a way that for each edge vivj of G , the weight of vivj is assigned by f(di,dj) . Hence, we have a weighted adjacency matrix Af(G) of G , in which the ij -entry is equal to f(di,dj) if vivj∈E(G) and 0 otherwise. In this paper, we use a unified approach to deal with the spectral properties of Af(G) for f(x,y) to be the functions of graphical or topological function-indices. Firstly, we obtain uniform interlacing inequalities for the weighted adjacency eigenvalues. For the edge-weight functions defined by almost a half of popularly used topological indices, it can be shown that our inequalities cannot be improved. Secondly, we establish a uniform equivalent condition for a connected graph G to have m distinct weighted adjacency eigenvalues. As an application, a combinatorial characterization for a graph to have two and three distinct weighted adjacency eigenvalues are presented, respectively. Moreover, bipartite graphs and unicyclic graphs with three distinct weighted adjacency eigenvalues are characterized. This paper attempts to unify the spectral study for weighted adjacency matrices of graphs with degree-based edge-weights.

Abstract:We address the problem of enumeration of seating arrangements of married couples around a circular table such that no spouses sit next to each other and no k consecutive persons are of the same gender. While the case of k=2 corresponds to the classical problème des ménages with a well-studied solution, no closed-form expression for the number of seating arrangements is known when k>=3. We propose a novel approach for this type of problems based on enumeration of walks in certain algebraically weighted de Bruijn graphs. Our approach leads to new expressions for the menage numbers and their exponential generating function and allows one to efficiently compute the number of seating arrangements in general cases, which we illustrate in detail for the ternary case of k=3.

Abstract:Let . Motivated by the notion of jumbled graphs introduced by Thomason, the expander mixing lemma and Haemers's vertex separation inequality, we say that a graph G with n vertices is a weakly -graph if holds for every pair of disjoint proper subsets X , Y of V ( G ) with no edge between X and Y . It is an -graph if in addition X and Y are not necessarily disjoint. Using graph eigenvalues, we show that every graph can be an -graph and/or a weakly -graph for some specific value . For instances, the expander mixing lemma implies that a d -regular graph on n vertices with the second largest absolute eigenvalue at most is an -graph, and Haemers's vertex separation inequality implies that every graph is a weakly -graph with , where denotes the i -th smallest Laplacian eigenvalue. This motivates us to study -graph and weakly -graph in general. Our main results include the following. (i) For any weakly -graph G , the matching number . If in addition G is a ( U , W )-bipartite graph with where , then . (ii) For any -graph G , If in addition G is a ( U , W )-bipartite graph with and no isolated vertices, then . (iii) If G is a weakly -graph for or an -graph for , then G has a fractional perfect matching. In addition, G has a perfect matching when n is even and G is factor-critical when n is odd. (iv) For any connected -graph G , the toughness . For any connected weakly -graph G , and if n is large enough, then for any . The results imply many old and new results in spectral graph theory, including several new lower bounds on matching number, fractional matching number and toughness from eigenvalues. In particular, we obtain a new lower bound on toughness via normalized Laplacian eigenvalues that extends a theorem originally conjectured by Brouwer from regular graphs to general graphs.

Abstract:Motivated by the theorem of Győri and Lovász, we consider the following problem. For a connected graph G on n vertices and m edges determine the number P(G,k) of unordered solutions of positive integers ∑i=1kmi=m such that every mi is realized by a connected subgraph Hi of G with mi edges. We also consider the vertex‐partition analogue. We prove various lower bounds on P(G,k) as a function of the number n of vertices in G , as a function of the average degree d of G , and also as the size CMCr(G) of r ‐partite connected maximum cuts of G . Those three lower bounds are tight up to a multiplicative constant. We also prove that the number π(G,k) of unordered k ‐tuples with ∑i=1kni=n , that are realizable by vertex partitions into k connected parts, is at least Ω(dk−1) .

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and let $d$ be a positive integer. In this paper, we generalize Iwasawa theory for graphs initiated by Gonet and Vallières to weighted graphs. In particular, we prove an analogue of Iwasawa's class number formula and that of Kida's formula for compatible systems of $(\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z})^d$-covers of weighted graphs. We also provide numerical examples. At the end of this paper, we give an application of the ideas of Iwasawa theory to the theory of discrete-time quantum walks in graphs.
