Abstract:Suppose the edges of $K_n$ are assigned weights by a weight function $w$. We define the {\em weighted extremal number} \[ \mathrm{ex}(n,w,F):=\max\{w(G)\mid G\subseteq K_n,\text{ and }G\text{ is }F\text{-free}\} \] where $w(G):=\sum_{e\in E(G)}w(e)$. In this paper we study this problem for two types of weights $w$, each of which has an application. The first application is to an extremal problem in a complete multipartite host graph. The second application is to the maximum rectilinear crossing number of trees of diameter 4.
Generation of weighted trees, block trees and block graphs

Abstract:We present a general framework to generate trees every vertex of which has a non-negative weight and a color. The colors are used to impose certain restrictions on the weight and colors of other vertices. We first extend the enumeration algorithms of unweighted trees given in [19, 20] to generate weighted trees that allow zero weight. We avoid isomorphisms by generalizing the concept of centroids to weighted trees and then using the so-called centroid-rooted canonical weighted trees. We provide a time complexity analysis of unranking algorithms and also show that the output delay complexity of enumeration is linear. The framework can be used to generate graph classes taking advantage of their tree-based decompositions/representations. We demonstrate our framework by generating weighted block trees which are in one-to-one correspondence with connected block graphs. All connected block graphs up to 19 vertices are publicly available at [1].

Weighted enumeration of nonbacktracking walks on weighted graphs

Abstract:We extend the notion of nonbacktracking walks from unweighted graphs to graphs whose edges have a nonnegative weight. Here the weight associated with a walk is taken to be the product over the weights along the individual edges. We give two ways to compute the associated generating function, and corresponding node centrality measures. One method works directly on the original graph and one uses a line graph construction followed by a projection. The first method is more efficient, but the second has the advantage of extending naturally to time-evolving graphs. Computational results are also provided.

Limbs and Cospectral Vertices in Trees

Abstract:We generalize Schwenk's result that almost all trees contain any given limb to trees with positive integer vertex weights. The concept of characteristic polynomial is extended to such weighted trees and we prove that the proportion of $n$-vertex weighted trees that is weighted cospectral to another $n$-vertex weighted tree approaches $1$ as $n$ approaches infinity. We also prove that, for any integer $k\ge 2$, the proportion of $n$-vertex trees containing $k$ non-similar cospectral vertices approaches $1$ as $n$ approaches infinity.

Belyi functions of the special weighted trees of $(2,3)$-type

Abstract:In this paper we calculate the Belyi functions of the weighted trees of $(2,3)$-type with primitive special edge rotation groups. There are 21 Galois orbits of these trees: 6 rational orbits, 12 orbits over quadratic fields, and three orbits over fields of degree 3, 4 and 6. The highest degree of the calculated Belyi function is 32. The calculations are performed using modular functions techniques.

Abstract:Károlyi, Pach, and Tóth proved that every 2-edge-colored straight-line drawing of the complete graph contains a monochromatic plane spanning tree. It is open if this statement generalizes to other classes of drawings, specifically, to simple drawings of the complete graph. These are drawings where edges are represented by Jordan arcs, any two of which intersect at most once. We present two partial results towards such a generalization. First, we show that the statement holds for cylindrical simple drawings. (In a cylindrical drawing, all vertices are placed on two concentric circles and no edge crosses either circle.) Second, we introduce a relaxation of the problem in which the graph is $k$-edge-colored, and the target structure must be hypochromatic, that is, avoid (at least) one color class. In this setting, we show that every $\lceil (n+5)/6\rceil$-edge-colored monotone simple drawing of $K_n$ contains a hypochromatic plane spanning tree. (In a monotone drawing, every edge is represented as an $x$-monotone curve.)

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a discrete analogue of weighted Hardy spaces on rooted trees and study weighted composition operators between them in detail. In particular, we characterize bounded and compact weighted composition operators between discrete Hardy spaces. We also consider isometric weighted composition operators between these spaces.

Abstract:We study two weighted graph coloring problems, in which one assigns q colors to the vertices of a graph such that adjacent vertices have different colors, with a vertex weighting w that either disfavors or favors a given color. We exhibit a weighted chromatic polynomial Ph(G,q,w) associated with this problem that generalizes the chromatic polynomial P(G,q). General properties of this polynomial are proved, and illustrative calculations for various families of graphs are presented. We show that the weighted chromatic polynomial is able to distinguish between certain graphs that yield the same chromatic polynomial. We give a general structural formula for Ph(G,q,w) for lattice strip graphs G with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. The zeros of Ph(G,q,w) in the q and w planes and their accumulation sets in the limit of infinitely many vertices of G are analyzed. Finally, some related weighted graph coloring problems are mentioned.

Abstract:For a fixed number of colors, we show that, in node-weighted split graphs, cographs, and graphs of bounded tree-width, one can determine in polynomial time whether a proper list-coloring of the vertices of a graph such that the total weight of vertices of each color equals a given value in each part of a fixed partition of the vertices exists. We also show that this result is tight in some sense, by providing hardness results for the cases where any one of the assumptions does not hold. The edge-coloring variant is also studied, as well as special cases of cographs and split graphs.

Abstract:C. Jensen, J. McCammond and J. Meier have used weighted hypertrees to compute the Euler characteristic of a subgroup of the automorphism group of a free product. Weighted hypertrees also appear in the study of the homology of the hypertree poset. We link them to decorated hypertrees after a general study on decorated hypertrees, which we enumerate using box trees.---C. Jensen, J. McCammond et J. Meier ont utilisé des hyperarbres pondérés pour calculer la caractéristique d'Euler d'un sous-groupe du groupe des automorphismes d'un produit libre. Un autre type d'hyperarbres pondérés apparaît aussi dans l'étude de l'homologie du poset des hyperarbres. Nous étudions les hyperarbres décorés puis les comptons à l'aide de la notion d'arbre en boîte avant de les relier aux hyperarbres pondérés.

Abstract:Graphs for the design of networks or electronic circuits are usually weighted and the spectrum of weighted graphs are often analyzed to solve problems. This paper discusses the spectrum and the spectral radii of trees with weights. We derive expressions for the spectrum and the spectral radius of a weighted star, together with the boundary limits of the spectral radii for weighted paths and weighted trees. The analysis uses the theory of nonnegative matrices and applies the moving edge technique. Some simple examples of weighted paths and trees are presented to explain the results. Then, we propose some open problems in this area.

Abstract:We show that plane bipolar posets (i.e., plane bipolar orientations with no transitive edge) and transversal structures can be set in correspondence to certain (weighted) models of quadrant walks, via suitable specializations of a bijection due to Kenyon, Miller, Sheffield and Wilson. We then derive exact and asymptotic counting results. In particular we prove (computationally and then bijectively) that the number of plane bipolar posets on $n+2$ vertices equals the number of plane permutations of size $n$. Regarding transversal structures, for each $v\geq 0$ we consider $t_n(v)$ the number of such structures with $n+4$ vertices and weight $v$ per quadrangular inner face (the case $v=0$ corresponds to having only triangular inner faces). We obtain a recurrence to compute $t_n(v)$, and an asymptotic formula that for $v=0$ gives $t_n(0)\sim c\ \!(27/2)^nn^{-1-\pi/\mathrm{arccos}(7/8)}$ for some $c>0$, which also ensures that the associated generating function is not D-finite.

Denote by T(n, m) the set of all weighted trees of order n with positive integral weights and fixed total weight sum m. Let further T(n, W) be the set of all weighted trees of order n with weight sequence W. We first introduce a new method to investigate the energy of weighted graphs, then using this method we determine the unique tree achieving maximal energy in T(n, W) for w(1) >= w(2) >= w(3) >= w(4) >= w(5) = .... = w(n-1), which supports a conjecture of the present authors in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 75 (2016) 267. Finally, we determine the unique tree having maximal energy in T(n, m) with n <= m <= n + 3, which supports a conjecture by Brualdi et al., Lin. Multilin. Abstract:A weighted coloured-edge graph is a graph for which each edge is assigned both a positive weight and a discrete colour, and can be used to model transportation and computer networks in which there are multiple transportation modes. In such a graph paths are compared by their total weight in each colour, resulting in a Pareto set of minimal paths from one vertex to another. This paper will give a tight upper bound on the cardinality of a minimal set of paths for any weighted coloured-edge graph. Additionally, a bound is presented on the expected number of minimal paths in weighted bicoloured-edge graphs.
