Abstract:A trend in agent community or enterprises is that they are shifting from closed to open architectures composed of a large number of autonomous agents. One of its implications could be that interface agent framework is getting more important in multi-agent system (MAS); so that systems constructed for different application domains could share a common understanding in human computer interface (HCI) methods, as well as human-agent and agent-agent interfaces. However, interface agent framework usually receives less attention than other aspects of MAS. In this paper, we will propose an interface web agent framework which is based on our former project called WAF and a Distributed HCI template. A group of new functionalities and implications will be discussed, such as web agent presentation, off-line agent reference, reconfigurable activation map of agents, etc. Their enabling techniques and current standards (e.g. existing ontological framework) are also suggested and shown by examples from our own implementation in WAF.

Abstract:As a matter of fact, it causes a big challenge for proto- col design to consider the coexistence of sensors and actu- ators in Wireless Sensor/Actuator Networks (WSANs), es- pecially in automated architecture. This paper proposes a routing protocol, Vertex Matrix Routing (VMR), and de- signs an extensive simulation to explore the performance of VMR in automated architecture (AA) and semi-automated architecture (SAA). Some preliminary results are presented to demonstrate the difficulties in data collection with dis- tributed multi-actuators and the advantages of using AA.

Abstract:Based on the wireless application protocol(WAP) Technology and our practical experience,we develop the WAP connecting sever integrative business management platform(WSIBMP) which is designed to contrapose against the present dispersive and independently executive WebServer network structure.The WSIBMP is not only applied,steady and efficient software to realize the WAP Business Management,but also an applicable integrated production to improve the convenience of configurating the business on the other WebServers,and is propitious to statistic,counting and integrative management.Some key technologies such as JAVA programming language,component oriented programming(COP) and the structure of Avalon framework is used to build this System.

Abstract:In this paper we present an architecture named Component-Based Mobile Protocol Framework (CBMPF). In this architecture, all wireless protocols are divided into components by different policies. CBMPF has three parts: Wireless Protocol Component Library, Wireless Protocol Component Development and Test Platform (WPCDTP) and Embedded Operating System for Dynamic Load (EOSDL). Wireless protocol components are the base of the CBMPF. Thus the protocols or part of them on the mobile devices can be replaced by the protocol or components from the remote library in order to use wireless protocols more flexibly and more efficient. The experimental results show that our CBMPF works well for wireless protocols.

Abstract:In recent times, there have been a lot of efforts for improving the ossified Internet architecture in a bid to sustain unstinted growth and innovation. A major reason for the perceived architectural ossification is the lack of ability to program the network as a system. This situation has resulted partly from historical decisions in the original Internet design which emphasized decentralized network operations through co-located data and control planes on each network device. The situation for wireless networks is no different resulting in a lot of complexity and a plethora of largely incompatible wireless technologies. The emergence of "programmable wireless networks", that allow greater flexibility, ease of management and configurability, is a step in the right direction to overcome the aforementioned shortcomings of the wireless networks. In this paper, we provide a broad overview of the architectures proposed in literature for building programmable wireless networks focusing primarily on three popular techniques, i.e., software defined networks, cognitive radio networks, and virtualized networks. This survey is a self-contained tutorial on these techniques and its applications. We also discuss the opportunities and challenges in building next-generation programmable wireless networks and identify open research issues and future research directions.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become pervasive and are used in many applications and services. Usually the deployments of WSNs are task oriented and domain specific; thereby precluding re-use when other applications and services are contemplated. This inevitably leads to the proliferation of redundant WSN deployments. Virtualization is a technology that can aid in tackling this issue, as it enables the sharing of resources/infrastructure by multiple independent entities. In this paper we critically review the state of the art and propose a novel architecture for WSN virtualization. The proposed architecture has four layers (physical layer, virtual sensor layer, virtual sensor access layer and overlay layer) and relies on the constrained application protocol (CoAP). We illustrate its potential by using it in a scenario where a single WSN is shared by multiple applications; one of which is a fire monitoring application. We present the proof-of-concept prototype we have built along with the performance measurements, and discuss future research directions.

Wasp: A Software-Defined Communication Layer For Hybrid Wireless Networks

Abstract:In this paper we introduce WASP, a general communication layer for hybrid wireless networks where multiple networks are used to complement each other. In our system, we capitalize on an infrastructure with a ubiquitous, wide-area network to help enable the creation of a local mobile ad-hoc network in an efficient, scalable, evolvable, and manageable way. In particular, in an architecture inspired by software defined networking, we decouple the control plane and data plane in the mobile devices and shift the control plane to a centralized controller. The controller, reachable via the wide-area network, manages a collection of mobile devices by informing each device how to handle traffic based on neighbor information provided by the mobile devices. With this, a mobile ad-hoc network can help reduce the data burden on the ubiquitous network, and the ubiquitous network can help reduce the burden on the mobile devices. WASP can be used in different networks with different applications such as cellular and military networks. In this paper, we based our implementation on Android and tested on a collection of Google Nexus-4 devices to measure metrics such as battery consumption. We evaluate on an extended ns-3 simulation platform which we added the ability to run unmodified Android applications on the nodes within ns-3. Our experiments show that WASP scales better than traditional ad-hoc networks with only a minimal trade off of energy. Additionally, we show that a content distribution scheme using WASP on smartphones with cellular data plans significantly offloads bandwidth from the cellular infrastructure, and in turn reduces expensive data usage and energy usage.

Abstract:Wireless sensor/actuator networks (WSANs) are emerging as a new generationof sensor networks. Serving as the backbone of control applications, WSANs will enablean unprecedented degree of distributed and mobile control. However, the unreliability ofwireless communications and the real-time requirements of control applications raise greatchallenges for WSAN design. With emphasis on the reliability issue, this paper presents anapplication-level design methodology for WSANs in mobile control applications. Thesolution is generic in that it is independent of the underlying platforms, environment,control system models, and controller design. To capture the link quality characteristics interms of packet loss rate, experiments are conducted on a real WSAN system. From theexperimental observations, a simple yet efficient method is proposed to deal withunpredictable packet loss on actuator nodes. Trace-based simulations give promisingresults, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:This paper describes a method to implement the wireless local area network authentication and privacy infrastructure(WAPI) in a mobile platform based on mesh network.The method uses a virtual access point(AP),which views several neighboring APs of the mesh network as one AP,for the primary WAPI authentication mechanism based on the features of the mesh network.This method reduces the re-authentications caused by station roaming and shortens the re-authentication delay,thus it reduces the client and system costs.A performance analysis show that this virtual AP method enhances the efficiency of WAPI implementations in mesh networks,and strengthens the usability,extensibility,and manageability of the WAPI.

Abstract:Recent advances in wireless sensor networks (WSN) have led to many new protocols specifically designed for different kinds of applications where energy efficiency is an essential consideration. Most of the attention, however, has been given to the medium access control (MAC) protocols since they pay an important role in wireless communications and traditional MAC protocols are not suitable for WSN. This paper tries to survey recent energy efficient MAC protocols for WSN and presents a classification of the various approaches pursued. The four main categories explored in this paper are scheduling based, collision free, contention based, and hybrid schemes. Several energy-efficient MAC protocols are described and discussed under the appropriate category. Moreover, requirements for the MAC layer in WSN are also discussed. The paper concludes with open research issues in the end.

Abstract:Protocol testing has been one of the most active fields in computer networks. In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), before directly employing protocols on hardware testbed, we expect an effective test framework to verify the logical correctness of protocols on computers, which could facilitate the whole test process. Towards this goal, this paper introduces an upper test framework in WSNs, namely Protocol Testing Framework for WSNs (PTFW). PTFW is a visual client-server test framework which is built upon the unique features of WSNs. It is based on the layered architecture of WSNs and uses Finite State Machine (FSM) theory as the kernel. The proposed test framework is developed on Linux Operating System (OS) and coded in standard C language for the consideration of compatibility for real-world implementation. PTFW provides the standards/specifications of conformance testing for test on hardware testbed. To validate the performance and effectiveness of PTFW, we apply it to a real-world WSNs protocol. The results show that PTFW exhibits excellent visual and real-time features, which bring considerable convenience to the later employments on testbed.

Abstract:Each wireless technology now used is optimized just for some particular applications and environments. However, the next generation wireless networks coexisting with fiber-optic based broadband communication networks will be required to operate over a wide range of cell size (from picocell to massive satellite cell) and offer multimedia services where each service may have a unique rate. Abstract:WirelessHART protocol is mainly used in the field of industrial process control, and is known for its simplicity, reliability and security. The WirelessHART data service is made up of a series of events. The communication between different state machines is also delivered through events. At the same time, each layer of protocol is composed of several state machines. Therefore, the WirelessHART protocol stack can be designed based on the Qp event-driven architecture. In this paper, WirelessHART software protocol stack is divided into seven active objects, in which each object maintains the corresponding functions. It is implemented active objects through the state machine, which can improve the reuse of behavior and save ROM resources.
