Abstract:We investigate the multiplicity of solutions for a Hamiltonian system coupling two systems associated with mixed boundary conditions. Corresponding to the first system, we impose periodic boundary conditions and assume the twist assumption commonly used for the Poincaré--Birkhoff theorem, while for the second one, we consider a two-point boundary conditions of Neumann type.

Abstract:As a novel synchronization phenomenon, measure synchronization (MS) in Hamiltonian systems is characterized by a commonly shared phase space that has invariant measure. Although there has been some discussions of the underlying mechanism, a general explanation of MS is still lacking. In this paper, we reveal the essence of MS by using Poincare section analysis. A two coupled Bosonic Josephson junction model is employed to perform the analysis as an illustration. It is shown that coupled Hamiltonian systems exhibit separatrix crossing behavior at quasiperiodic MS transition. Moreover, using this analysis method we find that chaotic MS is the result of separatrix chaos. It is concluded that the Poincare section technique is a general method to explain MS, and the direct correspondence between separatrix behavior and the MS transition is a universal property in coupled Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we give the definition of Maslov-type index of the discrete Hamiltonian system, and obtain the relation of Morse index and Maslov-type index of the discrete Hamiltonian system which is a generalization of case $\omega=1$ in \cite{RoS1}, \cite{RoS2} and \cite{Maz1} to case $\omega \in {\bf U}$ via direct method which is different from that of \cite{RoS1}, \cite{RoS2} and \cite{Maz1}. Moreover well-posedness of the splitting numbers $S_{\omega}$ of the discrete Hamiltonian system is proven, thus index iteration theories in \cite{Bot1} and \cite{Lon4} are also valid for the discrete Hamiltonian system case.

Abstract:We consider the second order strongly indefinite differential system with superlinearities. By using the approximation method of finite element, we show that bounds on solutions of the restriction functional onto finite dimensional subspace axe equivalent to bounds on their relative Morse indices. The obtained results can be used to establish a Morse theory for strongly indefinite functional with superlinearities.

In the last section we compute the Morse index of some heteroclinic and halfclinic solutions of some classical mechanical systems like the mathematical pendulum, the Nagumo equation and a competition-diffusion system in dimension 4.

For this purpose, the relative Morse index in Abbondandolo (Morse theory for Hamiltonian systems, 2001), and a Morse theory developed in Hirano et al. (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 10:223–247, 2000) are combined. As a complement, we also provide a result based on the linking method. Due to the abstract nature of the framework, some examples are also given.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the solutions of the following k-coupled elliptic system -Delta u(i) = Sigma(k)(j=1) beta(ij)vertical bar u(i)vertical bar(q-1)u(i)vertical bar u(j)vertical bar(q+1) in R-N, i=1,...,k, where q >= 1, N >= 2, k is a fixed positive integer and B = (beta(ij))(i,j=1)(k) is a real symmetric matrix. We analyze the impact of the properties of the matrix B on the solutions. In particular, when the matrix B is strictly copositive, we give a complete classification for stable and finite Morse index solutions (whether positive or sign-change) with 3 <= 2q + 1 < p(c)(N), where p(c)(N) is the Joseph-Lundgren exponent. Abstract:We study the boundary value problemDelta u = lambda vertical bar x vertical bar(alpha) f(u) in Omega, u = 1 on partial derivative Omega (1)where lambda > 0, alpha >= 0, Omega is a bounded smooth domain in R-N (N >= 2) containing 0 and f is a C-1 function satisfying lim(s -> 0+) s(p) f(s) = 1. We show that for each alpha >= 0, there is a critical power p(c)(alpha) > 0, which is decreasing in alpha, such that the branch of positive solutions possesses infinitely many bifurcation points provided p > p(c)(alpha) or p > p(c)(0), and this relies on the shape of the domain Omega. We get some important estimates of the Morse index of the regular and singular solutions. Moreover, we also study the radial solution branch of the related problems in the unit ball. We find that the branch possesses infinitely many turning points provided that p > p(c)(alpha) and the Morse index of any radial solution (regular or singular) in this branch is finite provided that 0 < p <= p(c)(alpha). This implies that the structure of the radial solution branch of (1) changes for 0 < p <= p(c)(alpha) and p > p(c)(alpha).

Abstract:We prove stability results of the Morse index plus nullity of Yang-Mills connections in dimension 4 under weak convergence. Precisely we establish that the sum of the Morse indices and the nullity of a bounded sequence of Yang-Mills connections is asymptotically bounded above by the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of the weak limit and the bubbles while the Morse indices are asymptotically bounded below by the sum of the Morse index of the weak limit and the bubbles.

Abstract:In this paper, we compute the Joseph-Lundgren exponent for the quadharmonic Lane-Emden equation, derive a monotonicity formula and classify the finite Morse index solution to the following quadharmonic Lane-Emden equation: Δ^4 u=|u|^p-1u in ^n. As a byproduct, we also get a monotonicity formula for the quadharmonic maps Δ^4 u=0.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the following Hamiltonian elliptic system: where ε > 0 is a small parameter, V is a potential function, and H is a super-quadratic sub-critical Hamiltonian. Applying suitable variational arguments and refined analysis techniques, we construct a new multiplicity result of semiclassical solutions which depends on the number of global minimum points of V . This result indicates how the shape of the graph of V affects the number of semiclassical solutions.
