Originally, our conference was called the Australasian Information Security Workshop. In 2008, it was renamed the Australasian Information Security Conference. The main aim of the ACSW-AISC is to provide a venue for researchers to present their work on all aspects of information security, and to promote collaboration between academic and industrial researchers working in this area.

Abstract:The DASFAA PhD workshop will be held in Brisbane, Australia on 22 April, 2009, in conjunction with the DASFAA 2009 conference. The workshop is the first in its series and aims to bring together PhD students working on topics related to the DASFAA conference series. It will offer PhD students the opportunity to present, discuss, and receive feedback on their research in a constructive and international atmosphere.The workshop has attracted six submissions. The submissions are highly diversified, coming from Australia, Cananda, Japan, and Mexico. All submissions were peer reviewed by three program committee members. The program committee selected three (short) papers for inclusion in the proceeding. The accepted papers covered important research topics and novel applications on Database, Data Mining, and Web Services.

Abstract:The advent of digital technologies such as social media, mobile, analytics, cloud computing, and the Internet of things has provided unique opportunities for organizations to engage in affordable, easy-to-use, easy-to-learn, and easy-to-implement innovations. Transformations through such technologies often have positive impacts on business processes, products, and services. As such, organizations have managed to increase productivity and efficiency, reduce cycle time, and make substantial gains through digital transformation. Research has also found such transformations to be positively associated with reducing harmful environmental impacts by providing organizations alternative ways to conduct their business activities. However, in recent times when organizations can use many technologies at near-zero cost, questions regarding the potential negative impacts that digital transformation has on the environment have arisen. The contemporary ubiquitous technologies that pervade everyday life necessitate that organizations continue to create large data centers that increase in capacity daily; however, such growth also increases their impact on the environment. Considering this dialectical contradiction, in 2019, we conducted a panel at the Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS) in Perth, Australia, to invigorate the dialogue regarding the impact that digital transformation has on environmental sustainability and investigate some directions for future research in this area.

Abstract:Background The Africa Capacity Building Initiative (ACBI) programme aimed to 'strengthen the research and training capacity of higher education institutions and support the development of individual scientists in sub-Saharan Africa through UK-Africa research collaborations' including by funding PhD studentships. We conducted research to understand students' experiences and to see how consortia-based programmes such as ACBI and their own institutions can enhance PhD students' research environment and progress. Methods In-depth interviews with 35 ACBI-funded PhD students explored their perspectives about how their research and personal development benefitted from belonging to a research consortium. Questionnaires were used to corroborate interview findings. Results Students recognised that membership of a research consortium provided many benefits compared to less well-resourced peers. By drawing on the programme and consortiums' resources, they were often able to overcome some limitations in their own institution's systems and facilities. Through their consortia they could access a wide range of international expertise and support from mentors and colleagues for their technical and psychosocial needs. Multiple consortia opportunities for engaging with the international scientific community and for networking, gave them confidence and motivation and enhanced their career prospects. Conclusion Our study and its recommendations highlight how the breadth and diversity of resources available to PhD students through research consortia can be harnessed to facilitate students' progress and to create a supportive and conducive research environment. It also underlines how, through a multi-level approach, consortia can contribute to longer-term improvements in institutional research environments for PhD students.

Abstract:It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 8th ACM Symposium on Information, Computer and Communications Security - ASIACCS 2013, which will be held in Hangzhou, China, May 7-10, 2013. The inaugural ASIACCS was held in Taipei (2006). Since then ASIACCS have been held in Singapore (2007), Tokyo (2008), Sydney (2009), Beijing (2010), Hong Kong (2011), and Seoul (2012). ASIACCS is a major international forum for information security researchers, practitioners, developers, and users to explore and exchange the newest cyber security ideas, breakthroughs, findings, techniques, tools, and experiences. We welcome subm issions from academia, government, and industry presenting novel research on all theoretical and practical aspects of computer and network security. The conference received 216 paper submissions, and accepted 35 regular papers and 27 short papers for presentation at the conference. The final versions of the accepted papers, which the authors finalized on the basis of comments from the reviewers, were included in the proceedings. Each accepted paper was carefully reviewed by at least three program committee members on the basis of its significance, novelty, and technical quality. The reviewing process was double-blind. It was followed by a Web-based discussion. Based on the comments and scores given by reviewers, the final decisions on acceptance were made.

Abstract:CACIC’11 was the seventeenth Congress in the CACIC series. It was organized by the School of Computer Science of the University of La Plata. The Congress included 11 Workshops with 148 accepted papers, 3 main Conference, 4 invited tutorials, different meetings related with Computer Science Education (Professors, PhD students, Curricula) and an International School with 5 courses. (http://www.cacic2011.edu.ar/). CACIC 2011 was organized following the traditional Congress format, with 11 Workshops covering a diversity of dimensions of Computer Science Research. Each topic was supervised by a committee of three chairs of different Universities. The call for papers attracted a total of 281 submissions. An average of 2.5 review reports were collected for each paper, for a grand total of 702 review reports that involved about 400 different reviewers. A total of 148 full papers, involving 393 authors and 77 Universities, were accepted and 25 of them were selected for this book.

Abstract:The growth of the doctorate in recent decades has spawned concerns about programme quality and external relevance. This article reports findings from research conducted in Australia that was shaped by the view that the doctorate remains in need of educational clarification and design. The research generated insights that can be used to modernise and realign the doctorate. First, this article discusses the development of a doctoral education framework. Next, it presents results from a questionnaire developed using the framework and administered in a national survey to both five-year-out doctoral graduates and to doctoral experts. This identifies the need to design programmes that better orient and align research training with students' professional aspirations, incorporate more real-world forms of learning, enhance traditional aspects of research training and provide structured reports of doctoral outcomes, experiences and preparations. The results underpin the need for more specific analyses of outcomes and assessment, the nature and distribution of doctoral experiences and the design and management of the resources that go into doctoral education.

Abstract:Doctoral training continues to grow in scale and scope in Australia, but has been subjected to far less design and improvement compared with other facets of higher education. Governments and universities engage in ongoing change which helps respond to opportunities and challenges but also leads to a proliferation of options and approaches. The current research study was seeded and shaped by the ambitious view that despite such refinement the doctorate remains in need of much bolder and deeper design, and particularly design with an education focus. This paper reports outcomes from a four-year national project which sought to articulate a doctoral design architecture. The paper discusses framing contexts and concepts, design and characteristics of the doctoral architecture, then implications for sectoral, institutional and individual practice. It concludes that this kind of architecture can provide a useful guide for growth.

The system demonstrations program offers the presentation of early research prototypes as well as interesting mature systems. The system demonstration chair and the members of the program committee received 49 submissions, 29 of which were selected for inclusion in the program after review by three members of the program committee.

Abstract:The International Symposium on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence is an annual forum that brings together ideas, projects, lessons, etc. associated with distributed computing, artificial intelligence and its applications in different themes. This meeting has been held at the University of Salamanca from the 22th to the 24th of October 2008. The technology transfer in this field is still a challenge and for that reason this type of contributions has been specially considered in this edition. This conference is the forum in which to present application of innovative techniques to complex problems. The artificial intelligence is changing our society. Its application in distributed environments, such as the Internet, electronic commerce, mobile communications, wireless devices, distributed computing, and so on is increasing and is becoming an element of high added value and economic potential, both industrial and research. These technologies are changing constantly as a result of the large research and technical effort being undertaken in both universities and businesses. The exchange of ideas between scientists and technicians from both academic and business areas is essential to facilitate the development of systems that meet the demands of today's society. This symposium has evolved from the Iberoamerican Symposium on Distributed Computing and continues to grow and prosper in its role as one of the premier conferences devoted to the quickly changing landscape of distributed computing, artificial intelligence and the application of AI to distributed systems. This year’s technical program is extremely strong and diverse, with contributions in both established and evolving areas of research. Submitted papers came from over 16 different countries, representing a truly "wide area network" of research activity. The DCAI technical program includes 88 papers (74 long papers, 12 short papers and 2 doctoral consortium) selected from a submission pool of 142 papers, from 16 different countries.

Abstract:Welcome to the proceedings of the 43rd ACM Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education, or SIGCSE 2012, where you will find the archival record of over one hundred papers as well as multiple other session formats that document the latest in computer science education: research, tool building, teaching, curriculum and philosophy. Reflecting our location in North Carolina's renowned Research Triangle, this year's conference features the three themes of "Teaching, Learning, and Collaborating" throughout the sessions. Teaching, learning, and collaborating occur inside and outside of the classroom, and among various combinations of students, academics, industry professionals, and others. We are pleased to announce the winners of the two annual SIGCSE awards. Professor Harold (Hal) Abelson of Massachusetts Institute of Technology will receive the SIGCSE award for Outstanding Contribution to Computer Science Education, and will provide Friday's keynote address. Jane Prey of Microsoft Research will accept the SIGCSE Award for Lifetime Service to the Computer Science Education Community and speak at our First Timer's Lunch. In addition, we've invited speakers to deliver two more keynote presentations. Frederick P. Brooks, Jr., from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will deliver Thursday's keynote address titled "The Teacher's Job is to Design Learning Experiences; not Primarily to Impart Information."
