Abstract:We studied the effects of different peak powers and initial pulse shapes during femtosecond laser pulse propagation in air. The full 3D simulation result showed that there was a bundle of discontinuous filaments along intense femtosecond laser pulse propagation axis. Comparisons between pulses with different input peak powers and initial pulse shapes could help us to find ways for forming long and uniform plasma channel in air.

Abstract:The method of real ray trace for the time characteristic analyzing of laser pulse is presented. By tracing the sampling rays with optical path or phase initialized by given input pulse and limited by the entrance pupil, the output pulse samples are calculated including the pulse width and energy distribution and the fitting pulse curve is obtained. Further more, this method can be also used for analyzing the affection of the tolerance in pulse transmission systems to the beam quality. Taking some pulse transmission systems as examples in which there are different diffraction components such as diffraction gratings, binary optical elements and holographic elements, the output pulse curves come from different input pulse are given, and the functions of different diffraction elements as pulse boarder and compressor are compared. As shown by the results that the multiple diffraction of binary optical elements will not only generates multiple focus points at the output space to affect the space quality of laser beam, but also leads to broad the pulse width so as to change the laser's time characteristics.

Abstract:From the Helmholtz equation, the optical field analytical expression of an ultrashort pulse propagating through a small aperture lens was acquired with chromatic and spherical aberration. By numerical modulation of the analytical expression, the spatial and temporal distributions of intensity in the paraxial and marginal focal plane and on the axis were obtained, and the impact of spherical aberration on them was also summarized. Because of the interference among the pulses passing through the lens from center to edge, two pulses with apparently different peak values appeared both in the paraxial and in the marginal focal plane. Abstract:Fourier optics enforces a tradeoff between length and narrowness in electromagnetic wavepackets, so that a narrow spatial focus diffracts at a large divergence angle, and only infinitely wide beams can remain non-diffracting. We show that it is possible to bypass this tradeoff between the length and narrowness of intensity hotspots, and find a family of electromagnetic wavepackets that abruptly focus to and defocus from high-intensity regions of any aspect ratio. Such features are potentially useful in scenarios where one would like to avoid damaging the surrounding environment, for instance, to target tumors very precisely in cancer treatment, drill holes of very precise dimensions in laser machining, or trigger nonlinear processes in a well-defined region. In the process, we also construct the first closed-form solutions to Maxwell's equations for finite-energy electromagnetic pulses. These pulses also exhibit intriguing physics, with an on-axis intensity peak that always travels at the speed of light despite inherent diffraction.

Abstract:An analytical expression is given to calculate the temporal Fresnel diffractive field of a grating illuminated by an ultrashort pulsed-laser beam. Numerical simulation shows that the temporal diffractive intensity distribution is different from that of the input pulse if the width of the input pulse is within several tens of femtoseconds. It is useful to develop a new simple reshaping method for an ultrashort pulse from our approach.

Abstract:We studied the interaction between sub-picosecond laser pulse with fused silica. Break-down threshold, electron collision time and nonlinear propagation dynamics were investigated to study the ionization dynamics and nonlinear propagation process of laser pulse. Electron collision time was measured to be about 1.7 fs when the electron density is about 10(19) cm(-3). Measurements on single shot laser-induced break-down threshold in bulk fused silica were performed for pulse duration tau(p) ranging from 240 fs to 2.5 ps when objective with different numerical aperture (NA) were used. It was found that the threshold tendency was depend on effective NA. Numerical simulations based on the nonlinear propagation model revealed that the defocusing effect of the bulk plasma was responsible for the different tendencies. Multi-foci was found at high incident pulse energy and the numerical simulations revealed that it was concomitant with pulse reshaping and refocusing by self-focus.
Aperture Design of Nano-Aperture Semiconductor Laser

Abstract:The near-field distributions of nano-aperture semiconductor lasers with different shapes and dimensions were characterized by the method of 3-D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). The calculation result reveals that the light intensity peak of the C-aperture is increased about 1000 times or more than that of the normal square or circular aperture with a comparable spot size and there is on obvious increase in power throughput. The maximum of the field enhancement occurs at the aperture size corresponding to one third of wavelength. This kind of nano-aperture semiconductor lasers can be used for the high density optical data storage, near field super resolution imaging and nano-photolithography.

Abstract:When a powerful femtosecond laser pulse was tightly focused into a bulk quartz, plasma generation occurred only in a very small focal volume. This extremely confined interaction led to an explosive expansion and generated a sub-micrometre void with a diameter as small as 200-300 nm. The dependence of the size of the void on the laser energy or pulse duration was investigated and the mechanism of this process was associated dominantly with the multiphoton ionization.

Abstract:Multiple foci and a long filament are observed when we focus a femtosecond laser pulse into a fused-silica sample. The dependences of the intensity distribution of the plasma luminescence on the pulse energy and the numerical aperture (NA) of the focusing objective are investigated. Multiple foci are observed when NA of </=0.65 . A long filament tail is formed instead of multiple foci when the NA is 0.85. A physical image of femtoseond pulse propagation is given by a model based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:The interaction of intense single-cycle ultrashort (0.1 to 9 fs) light pulses with diamond crystal and thin film is simulated, combining the dependent Kohn-Sham equation with the Maxwell equations. Distinct features are observed depending on the duration of the pulse. In the diamond crystal, maximum energy transfer from light pulse is observed with a pulse duration 0.3 fs. In this case, the phase of current density J(t) coincides with that of the electric field E(t). For the incident pulse of duration 0.1 fs, most of the light will transmit on passing the thin film. But for the pulse of duration 0.5 fs, there is more reflection than transmission. For light pulses of durations 7 and 9 fs in diamond crystal, traditional nonlinear behavior of energy transfer are observed. Interestingly, for the attosecond pulse, there is a linear scaling behavior with the pulse intensity below 1016W/cm2 on the one hand and an unusual linear dynamic interference response behavior with the pulse width, determined by the interference of the different quantum pathways, on the other hand.

Abstract:Single-shot laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) measurements of multi-type free-standing ultrathin foils were performed in vacuum environment for 800 nm laser pulses with durations {\tau} ranging from 50 fs to 200 ps. Results show that the laser damage threshold fluences (DTFs) of the ultrathin foils are significantly lower than those of corresponding bulk materials. Wide band gap dielectric targets such as SiN and formvar have larger DTFs than those of semiconductive and conductive targets by 1-3 orders of magnitude depending on the pulse duration. The damage mechanisms for different types of targets are studied. Based on the measurement, the constrain of the LIDTs on the laser contrast is discussed.

Abstract:The characteristics of the multiple filaments formed by prefocused and freely propagating femtosecond laser pulses are investigated and compared. It is shown in our experiments that the diameter, length, stability, and interaction for the two cases can be quite different. The filaments formed by prefocused beam indicate dynamic spatial evolution with higher laser intensity and electron density. They have a typical diameter of 100 mu m are of shorter length. In the free propagation case, the filaments exhibit interesting properties such as hundred-meter propagation distance and mm-size diameter. Moreover, only the interaction of the filaments with the energy background affects the evolution of the filaments. Filament-filament interactions such as the filament splitting and merging were not observed in this case.
Diffraction effects in mechanically chopped laser pulses

Abstract:A mechanical beam chopper consists of a rotating disc of regularly spaced wide slits which allow light to pass through them. A continuous light beam, after passing through the rotating disc, is switched-on and switched-off periodically, and a series of optical pulses are produced. The intensity of each pulse is expected to rise and fall smoothly with time. However, a careful study has revealed that the edges of mechanically chopped laser light pulses consist of periodic intensity undulations which can be detected with a photo detector. It has been shown in this paper that the intensity undulations in mechanically chopped laser pulses are produced by diffraction of light from the rotating disc and a detailed explanation of the intensity undulations is given. The experiment provides an efficient method to capture a one dimensional diffraction profile of light from a straight sharp-edge in the time domain. In addition, the experiment accurately measured wavelengths of three different laser beams from the undulations in mechanically chopped laser light pulses.

Abstract:The impact of air holes on the field profile in photonic crystal vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (PC-VCSELs) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method is used to demonstrate the squeeze effect induced by air holes on the field profile at small etching depths and the diffraction caused by air holes in PC-VCSELs. In far field patterns (FFPs) of single-mode PC-VCSELs, there are six sidelobes surrounding the main lobe due to the coherent coupling between the diffractive light from air holes and the light from the central defect. In the experiments, the light from air holes has the same spectrum as that from the central defect. The measured FFPs are the same as the calculated FFPs. Both the measured spectra and the measured FFPs show that the light from air holes has the same wavelength and polarization as the light from the central defect, which confirms that the light from air holes is the diffractive light caused by air holes.

Abstract:For linearly polarized femtosecond laser-induced periodic nanostructures on a metal surface, the underlying physics of self-formation patterns is yet to be fully explained. We demonstrated here that the stabilized periodic interface electrostatic field (Coulomb field) arising from the surface phase-locking resonant dominates the self-formation of ripple structures. The kinetics of ultrafast laser ablation on solid surface were discussed. The threshold fluence and upper limit fluence for self-formation of ripple structures were calculated. The underlying mechanisms were clarified with both simulation and experimental results. Analytical formula for the interspace between ripples (i.e., wavelength of surface Langmuir wave) was developed. As illustrated by the experimental results, the competition of the two ablation mechanisms, namely surface Coulomb ablation and direct ultrafast laser ablations, was shown to result in distinct structuring patterns for a typical Gaussian pulse laser irradiation on the target surface at the appropriate laser energy fluence.

Abstract:Abstract Femtosecond laser technology has attracted significant attention from the viewpoints of fundamental and application; especially femtosecond laser processing materials present the unique mechanism of laser-material interaction. Under the extreme nonequilibrium conditions imposed by femtosecond laser irradiation, many fundamental questions concerning the physical origin of the material removal process remain unanswered. In this review, cutting-edge ultrafast dynamic observation techniques for investigating the fundamental questions, including time-resolved pump-probe shadowgraphy, ultrafast continuous optical imaging, and four-dimensional ultrafast scanning electron microscopy, are comprehensively surveyed. Each technique is described in depth, beginning with its basic principle, followed by a description of its representative applications in laser-material interaction and its strengths and limitations. The consideration of temporal and spatial resolutions and panoramic measurement at different scales are two major challenges. Hence, the prospects for technical advancement in this field are discussed finally.

Abstract:We investigate the adiabatic enhanced compression of ultrashort pulses from a distributed feedback laser operated at 1550 nm in fibres with slowly decreasing dispersion (FSDD). High-quality pulse compressions from 4.4 ps down to 1.1 ps in a 100 m FSDD and from 4.4 ps down to 830 fs in a 500 m FSDD are obtained. The Raman self-frequency shift of femtosecond pulses in the compression is observed. Theoretical analyses are in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:Propagation of a tightly focused high-power ultrashort laser pulse in an optical medium is usually substantially influenced by the medium optical nonlinearity that can noticeably affect the laser pulse parameters around the nonlinear focus and lead to unavoidable and often undesirable spatial distortions of the focal waist. We present the results of our experimental study and numerical simulations on a femtosecond Ti-Sapphire laser pulse propagation in air under different spatial focusing. We concentrated our study on spectral-angular and spatial pulse transformations under different focusing regimes, from linear to nonlinear one, when pulse filamentation occurs. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, we found the laser pulse numerical apertures range,namely, from NA=0.002 to 0.005 (for laser pulse energy of 1 mJ), where the laser pulse distortions both in frequency-angular spectrum and pulse spatial shape are minimal. By means of the numerical simulations, we found the threshold pulse energy and peak power in a wide range of focusing conditions, within which a transition between the linear and strongly nonlinear laser pulse focusing in air takes place. This energy limit is shown to decrease with pulse numerical aperture enhancement. Our findings identify the laser pulse numerical apertures and energy adequate for getting a maximum laser intensity with a good beam quality around the focal point suitable for various laser micropatterning and micromachining technologies.

Abstract:The spatiotemporal transformation of a focused femtosecond laser pulse during nonlinear propagation in fused silica was investigated numerically. We found that the on-axis intensity of the pulse experiences a shortening of pulse duration, formation of a double peak and then an evolution to one peak as a result of the interplay of plasma-induced defocusing, self-focusing and diffraction. By contrast, the temporal profile of the space integrated power of the pulse retains the initial shape but with a slight depletion due to the nonlinear loss. As a result, although it is possible to obtain a shortened pulse by selecting the central portion of the pulse at appropriate locations, the percentage of available energy cannot exceed the percentage of pulse shortening.
