Abstract:Combinatorial problems such as combinatorial optimization and constraint satisfaction problems arise in decision-making across various fields of science and technology. In real-world applications, when multiple optimal or constraint-satisfying solutions exist, enumerating all these solutions -- rather than finding just one -- is often desirable, as it provides flexibility in decision-making. However, combinatorial problems and their enumeration versions pose significant computational challenges due to combinatorial explosion. To address these challenges, we propose enumeration algorithms for combinatorial optimization and constraint satisfaction problems using Ising machines. Ising machines are specialized devices designed to efficiently solve combinatorial problems. Typically, they sample low-cost solutions in a stochastic manner. Our enumeration algorithms repeatedly sample solutions to collect all desirable solutions. The crux of the proposed algorithms is their stopping criteria for sampling, which are derived based on probability theory. In particular, the proposed algorithms have theoretical guarantees that the failure probability of enumeration is bounded above by a user-specified value, provided that lower-cost solutions are sampled more frequently and equal-cost solutions are sampled with equal probability. Many physics-based Ising machines are expected to (approximately) satisfy these conditions. As a demonstration, we applied our algorithm using simulated annealing to maximum clique enumeration on random graphs. We found that our algorithm enumerates all maximum cliques in large dense graphs faster than a conventional branch-and-bound algorithm specially designed for maximum clique enumeration. This demonstrates the promising potential of our proposed approach.

Abstract:Set packing problem is originated from the application of cutting problem which is to divide the elements un- der strong constraint condition.In complexity theory,set packing problems is an important NP-hard problem,which is used widely in the fields of scheduling and code optimization.Especially after the emerging of the parameterized compu- tation theory,set packing problem becomes one of the most concerned research problem.According to the differences of the concerned problem,we divide the set packing problem into five classes and give the corresponding definition. This paper gives a detailed presentation of all the current algorithms for the problems of the five classes,and puts em- phasis on the analysis and comparison of the technique used in those parameterized algorithms.At last,we present some development orientation in algorithm research for the set packing problem.

Abstract:This note describes an algorithm for enumerating all the elements in a finite set based on uniformly random sampling from the set. This algorithm can be used for enumeration by fair sampling with quantum annealing. Our algorithm is based on a lemma of the coupon collector's problem and is an improved version of the algorithm described in arXiv:2007.08487 (2020). We provide a mathematical analysis and a numerical demonstration of our algorithm.
From Amortized to Worst Case Delay in Enumeration Algorithms

Abstract:The quality of enumeration algorithms is often measured by their delay, that is, the maximal time spent between the output of two distinct solutions. If the goal is to enumerate $t$ distinct solutions for any given $t$, then another relevant measure is the maximal time needed to output $t$ solutions divided by $t$, a notion we call the amortized delay of the algorithm, since it can be seen as the amortized complexity of the problem of enumerating $t$ elements in the set. In this paper, we study the relation between these two notions of delay, showing different schemes allowing one to transform an algorithm with polynomial amortized delay for which one has a blackbox access into an algorithm with polynomial delay. We complement our results by providing several lower bounds and impossibility theorems in the blackbox model.

Abstract:This paper explores the potential of smart enumeration: enumeration of a design space giving the effect of exhaustive search, while using heuristics to order and reduce the search space. We characterise smart enumeration as having several key properties, including carefully chosen problem domains and techniques to speed up the search, such as those that exploit symmetry. We also generate reconfigurable hardware to accelerate part of the search. Our approach has been applied to technology mapping for field-programmable gate arrays, optimising area and power consumption.
Combinatorial Exploration: An algorithmic framework for enumeration

Abstract:Combinatorial Exploration is a new domain-agnostic algorithmic framework to automatically and rigorously study the structure of combinatorial objects and derive their counting sequences and generating functions. We describe how it works and provide an open-source Python implementation. As a prerequisite, we build up a new theoretical foundation for combinatorial decomposition strategies and combinatorial specifications. We then apply Combinatorial Exploration to the domain of permutation patterns, to great effect. We rederive hundreds of results in the literature in a uniform manner and prove many new ones. These results can be found in a new public database, the Permutation Pattern Avoidance Library (PermPAL) at <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://permpal.com" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>. Finally, we give three additional proofs-of-concept, showing examples of how Combinatorial Exploration can prove results in the domains of alternating sign matrices, polyominoes, and set partitions.

Solution Enumeration by Optimality in Answer Set Programming

Abstract:Given a combinatorial search problem, it may be highly useful to enumerate its (all) solutions besides just finding one solution, or showing that none exists. The same can be stated about optimal solutions if an objective function is provided. This work goes beyond the bare enumeration of optimal solutions and addresses the computational task of solution enumeration by optimality (SEO). This task is studied in the context of Answer Set Programming (ASP) where (optimal) solutions of a problem are captured with the answer sets of a logic program encoding the problem. Existing answer-set solvers already support the enumeration of all (optimal) answer sets. However, in this work, we generalize the enumeration of optimal answer sets beyond strictly optimal ones, giving rise to the idea of answer set enumeration in the order of optimality (ASEO). This approach is applicable up to the best k answer sets or in an unlimited setting, which amounts to a process of sorting answer sets based on the objective function. As the main contribution of this work, we present the first general algorithms for the aforementioned tasks of answer set enumeration. Moreover, we illustrate the potential use cases of ASEO. First, we study how efficiently access to the next-best solutions can be achieved in a number of optimization problems that have been formalized and solved in ASP. Second, we show that ASEO provides us with an effective sampling technique for Bayesian networks.

Random-Order Enumeration for Self-Reducible NP-Problems

Abstract: In plenty of data analysis tasks, a basic and time-consuming process is to produce a large number of solutions and feed them into downstream processing. Various enumeration algorithms have been developed for this purpose. An enumeration algorithm produces all solutions of a problem instance without repetition. To be a statistically meaningful representation of the solution space, solutions are required to be enumerated in uniformly random order. This paper studies a set of self-reducible NP-problems in three hierarchies, where the problems are polynomially countable ($Sr_{NP}^{FP}$), admit FPTAS ($Sr_{NP}^{FPTAS}$), and admit FPRAS ($Sr_{NP}^{FPRAS}$), respectively. The trivial algorithm based on a (almost) uniform generator is in fact inefficient. We provide a new insight that the (almost) uniform generator is not the end of the story. More efficient algorithmic frameworks are proposed to enumerate solutions in uniformly random order for problems in these three hierarchies. (1) For problems in $Sr_{NP}^{FP}$, we show a random-order enumeration algorithm with polynomial delay (PDREnum); (2) For problems in $Sr_{NP}^{FPTAS}$, we show a Las Vegas random-order enumeration algorithm with expected polynomial delay (PDLVREnum); (3) For problems in $Sr_{NP}^{FPRAS}$, we devise a fully polynomial delay Atlantic City random-order enumeration algorithm with expected delay polynomial in the input size and the given error probability $\delta$ (FPACREnum), which has a probability of at least $1-\delta$ becoming a Las Vegas random-order enumeration algorithm. Finally, to further improve the efficiency of the random-order enumeration algorithms, based on the master/slave paradigm, we present a parallelization with 1.5-optimal enumeration delay and running time, along with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Intersection graphs are well-studied in the area of graph algorithms. Some intersection graph classes are known to have algorithms enumerating all unlabeled graphs by reverse search. Since these algorithms output graphs one by one and the numbers of graphs in these classes are vast, they work only for a small number of vertices. Binary decision diagrams (BDDs) are compact data structures for various types of data and useful for solving optimization and enumeration problems. This study proposes enumeration algorithms for five intersection graph classes, which admit O(n) -bit string representations for their member graphs. Our algorithm for each class enumerates all unlabeled graphs with n vertices over BDDs representing the binary strings in time polynomial in n . Moreover, our algorithms are extended so that it enumerates those with constraints on the maximum (bi)clique size and/or the number of edges.

On Enumerating Short Projected Models

Abstract:Propositional model enumeration, or All-SAT, is the task to record all models of a propositional formula. It is a key task in software and hardware verification, system engineering, and predicate abstraction, to mention a few. It also provides a means to convert a CNF formula into DNF, which is relevant in circuit design. While in some applications enumerating models multiple times causes no harm, in others avoiding repetitions is crucial. We therefore present two model enumeration algorithms, which adopt dual reasoning in order to shorten the found models. The first method enumerates pairwise contradicting models. Repetitions are avoided by the use of so-called blocking clauses, for which we provide a dual encoding. In our second approach we relax the uniqueness constraint. We present an adaptation of the standard conflict-driven clause learning procedure to support model enumeration without blocking clauses.Our procedures are expressed by means of a calculus and proofs of correctness are provided.

Abstract:In population-based optimization algorithms (POAs), given an optimization problem, the quality of the solutions depends heavily on the selection of algorithms, strategies and associated parameter combinations, constraint handling method, local search method, surrogate model, niching method, etc. In the literature, there exist several alternatives corresponding to each aspect of configuring a population-based algorithm such as one-point/two-points/uniform crossover operators, toumament/ranking/stochastic uniform sampling selection methods, Gaussian/Levy/Cauchy mutation operators, clearing/crowding/sharing based niching algorithms, adaptive penalty/epsilon/superiority of feasible constraint handling approaches, associated parameter values and so on. In POA literature, No Free Lunch (NFL) theorem has been well-documented and therefore, to effectively solve a given optimization problem, an appropriate configuration is necessary. But, the trial and error approach for the appropriate configuration may be impractical because at different stages of evolution, the most appropriate configurations could be different depending on the characteristics of the current search region for a given problem. Recently, the concept of incorporating ensemble strategies into POAs has become popular so that the process of configuring an optimization algorithm can benefit from both the availability of diverse approaches at different stages and alleviate the computationally intensive offline tuning. In addition, algorithmic components of different advantages could support one another during the optimization process, such that the ensemble of them could potentially result in a versatile POA. This paper provides a survey on the use of ensemble strategies in POAs. In addition, we also provide an overview of similar methods in the literature such as hyper-heuristics, island models, adaptive operator selection, etc. and compare them with the ensemble strategies in the context of POAs.

Abstract:Berth allocation problem (BAP) is to assign berthing spaces for incoming vessels while considering various constraints and objectives, which is an important optimization problem in port logistics. Evolutionary computation (EC) algorithms are a class of meta-heuristic optimization algorithms that mimic the process of natural evolution and swarm intelligence behaivors to generate and evolve potential solutions to optimization problems. Due to the advantages of strong gobal search capability and robustness, the EC algorithms have gained significant attention in many research fields. In recent years, many studies have successfully applied EC algorithms in solving BAPs and achieved encouraging performance. This paper aims to survey the existing literature on the EC algorithms for solving BAPs. First, this survey introduces two common models of BAPs, which are continuous BAP and discrete BAP. Second, this paper introduces three typical EC algorithms (including genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and ant colony optimization) and analyzes the existing studies of using these EC algorithms to solve BAPs. Finally, this paper analyzes the future research directions of the EC algorithms in solving BAPs.

Abstract:Consider a subset of positive integers $S$. In this paper, we reduce the upper bound on the length of a minimum program that enumerates $S$ in terms of the probability of $S$ being enumerated by a random program. So far, the best-known upper bound was given by Solovay. Solovay proved that the minimum length of a program enumerating $S$ is bounded by $3$ times minus binary logarithm of the probability that a random program enumerates $S$. Later, Vereshchagin showed that the constant can be improved from $3$ to $2$ for finite sets. By improving the method proposed by Solovay, we demonstrate that any bound for finite sets implies the same bound for infinite sets, modulo logarithmic factors. Thus, the constant can be replaced by $2$ for every set $S$ due to the result of Vereshchagin.
