Abstract:This paper studies the link between the number of critical eigenvalues and the number of delays in certain classes of delay-differential equations. There are two main results. The first states that for k purely imaginary numbers which are linearly independent over the rationals, there exists a scalar delay-differential equation depending on k fixed delays whose spectrum contains those k purely imaginary numbers. The second result is a generalization of the first result for delay-differential equations which admit a characteristic equation consisting of a product of s factors of scalar type. In the second result, the k eigenvalues can be distributed amongst the different factors. Since the characteristic equation of scalar equations contain only exponential terms, the proof exploits a toroidal structure which comes from the arguments of the exponential terms in the characteristic equation. Our second result is applied to delay coupled D_n-symmetric cell systems with one-dimensional cells. In particular, we provide a general characterization of delay coupled D_n-symmetric systems with arbitrary number of delays and cell dimension.

Abstract:Based on the argument principle, a method is proposed to derive delay-dependent stability criteria without any conservatism for LTI (linear time invariant) systems with multiple time delays. Because the characteristic polynomial of a LTI system with multiple time delays is analytic in the whole complex plane, we use the argument principle to judge whether the characteristic equation has roots in the right-half complex plane. We construct a new function based on the characteristic polynomial so as that the criteria take a straightforward form, and can be used conveniently. The criteria can be considered as a generalized Nyquist criterion. The criteria are sufficient and necessary for the stability of the system. The method involves no symbol calculation so as that can deal easily with the systems of which the orders and time delays are more than 3. The example case study shows that the criteria can judge whether a LTI system is stable exactly, for any given time delays.
Multiple-scale analysis of the simplest large-delay differential equation

Abstract:A delayed term in a differential equation reflects the fact that information takes significant time to travel from one place to another within a process being studied. Despite de apparent similarity with ordinary differential equations, delay-differential equations (DDE) are known to be fundamentally different and to require a dedicate mathematical apparatus for their analysis. Indeed, when the delay is large, it was found that they can sometimes be related to spatially extended dynamical systems. The purpose of this paper is to explain this fact in the simplest possible DDE by way of a multiple-scale analysis. We show the asymptotic correspondence of that linear DDE with the diffusion equation. This partial differential equations arises from a solvability condition that differs from the ones usually encountered in textbooks on asymptotics: In the limit of large delays, the leading-order problem is a map and secular divergence at subsequent orders stem from forcing terms in that map.

Universal bifurcation scenarios in delay-differential equations with one delay

Abstract:We show that delay-differential equations (DDE) exhibit universal bifurcation scenarios, which are observed in large classes of DDEs with a single delay. Each such universality class has the same sequence of stabilizing or destabilizing Hopf bifurcations. These bifurcation sequences and universality classes can be explicitly described by using the asymptotic continuous spectrum for DDEs with large delays. Here, we mainly study linear DDEs, provide a general transversality result for the delay-induced bifurcations, and consider three most common universality classes. For each of them, we explicitly describe the sequence of stabilizing and destabilizing bifurcations. We also illustrate the implications for a nonlinear Stuart-Landau oscillator with time-delayed feedback.

Abstract:In this paper, a definition of the fundamental operator for the linear autonomous functional differential equation with infinite delay in a Banach space is given, and some sufficient and necessary conditions of the fundamental operator being exponentially stable in abstract phase spaces which satisfy some suitable hypotheses are obtained. Moreover, we discuss the relation between the exponential asymptotic stability of the zero solution of nonlinear functional differential equation with infinite delay in a Banach space and the exponential stability of the solution semigroup of the corresponding linear equation, and find that the exponential stability problem of the zero solution for the nonlinear equation can be discussed only in the exponentially fading memory phase space.

Abstract:Stability analysis has been always a key issue in nonlinear dynamics and engineering applications, and it is still a challenging task for time-delay control systems when tuning some parameters like feedback gains and delays. In this paper, firstly we propose a parametric continuation algorithm for calculating the rightmost characteristic root(s), by solving initial value problems of a nonlinear differential equation associated with the characteristic function of the time-delay system. Then we study the static bifurcation caused by multiple characteristic roots that occurs in solving the associated nonlinear initial value problems and present an algorithm for fast calculation of the bifurcation points. We demonstrate the theoretical results with examples arising in vibration control.

Abstract:One of the well known properties of DDEs is that their effective dimensions increase with the delay time τ[1, 2], see Sect. 1.2.2. This allows one to select different values (sufficiently large) for the delay time τ to generate high-dimensional chaotic signals. Hence, in recent times DDEs have received increased attention in the nonlinear dynamics literature due to the possibility of generating more complex and high-dimensional chaotic attractors and also because of the feasibility of their experimental realization. Therefore, several chaotic time-delay systems and their variants have been proposed during the past few years for generating and enhancing complexity of chaotic behavior in various technological and engineering applications. In this chapter, we will briefly review the dynamical properties of some of the most important first order scalar nonlinear time-delay systems, that have been widely used in the literature, exhibiting chaotic/hyperchaotic behaviors. In addition, we will also present some of the interesting coupled (higher order) delay differential equations in different areas of science and technology.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate dynamical behaviors of a large class of delayed differential systems with discontinuous right-hand side. This class of delayed differential systems includes Hopfield and Cellular neural networks with discontinuous activations as special cases. We prove that under some mild conditions, this system has a unique almost-periodic solution, which is globally exponential stable.

Abstract:This paper investigates the asymptotic and oscillatory properties of a distinctive class of third-order linear differential equations characterized by multiple delays in a noncanonical case. Employing the comparative method and the Riccati method, we introduce the novel and rigorous criteria to discern whether the solutions of the examined equation exhibit oscillatory behavior or tend toward zero. Our study contributes to the existing literature by presenting theories that extend and refine the understanding of these properties in the specified context. To validate our findings and demonstrate their applicability in a general setting, we offer two illustrative examples, affirming the robustness and validity of our proposed criteria.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:Many phenomena in nature can be described by establishing differential equation models. To be more practical, we extend the instantaneous impulsive delay differential equations proposed by Faria and Oliveira to the non-instantaneous impulsive delay differential equations. This paper proposes a class of non-instantaneous impulsive delay differential equations which satisfy Yorke-type condition. With the help of the definitions of stability, sufficient conditions for stability and the global asymptotic stability of the zero solution of this model are given. Finally, we give some examples and numerical simulations.

Abstract:In our manuscript, we develop a new approach for stability analysis of one-dimensional wave equation with time delay. The major contribution of our work is to develop a new method for spectral analysis. We derive sufficient and necessary conditions for the feedback gain and time delay which guarantee the exponential stability of the closed-loop system. Comparing with similar conditions developed in the past literatures, we discuss all the situation when the time delay is positive, including when it is irrational. We prove that the exponential stability can be achieved if and only if the time delay is an even number. We also get the general formula term of the stability region of the coupling gain for different even multiples of time delay, and from this we easily obtain the shrink of the stability region as time delay increases. In addition, we explore the impact of slight perturbations in time delay on high frequency robustness.
An exact solution for a non-autonomous delay differential equations

Abstract:We derive an exact solution for a simple non-autonomous delay differential equation (DDE) over the entire real-time axis, representing it as a sum of Gaussian-shaped dynamics with distinct peak positions. This marks the first explicit solution for non-autonomous DDEs and is a rare example even among general DDEs. The constructed solution offers key physical insights and facilitates the analysis of system properties, such as the envelope profile of the dynamics.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 4, Page 1736-1758, August 2024. We consider nonlinear delay differential and renewal equations with infinite delay. We extend the work of Gyllenberg et al. [Appl. Math. Comput., 333 (2018), pp. 490–505] by introducing a unifying abstract framework, and we derive a finite-dimensional approximating system via pseudospectral discretization. For renewal equations, we consider a reformulation in the space of absolutely continuous functions via integration. We prove the one-to-one correspondence of equilibria between the original equation and its approximation, and that linearization and discretization commute. Our most important result is the proof of convergence of the characteristic roots of the pseudospectral approximation of the linear(ized) equations when the collocation nodes are chosen as the family of scaled zeros or extrema of Laguerre polynomials. This ensures that the finite-dimensional system correctly reproduces the stability properties of the original linear equation if the dimension of the approximation is large enough. The result is illustrated with several numerical tests, which also demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach for the bifurcation analysis of equilibria of nonlinear equations. The new approach used to prove convergence also provides the exact location of the spectrum of the differentiation matrices for the Laguerre zeros and extrema, adding new insights into properties that are important in the numerical solution of differential equations by pseudospectral methods.
