Abstract:In classical Euclidean geometry, there are several equivalent definitions of conic sections. We show that in the hyperbolic plane, the analogues of these same definitions still make sense, but are no longer equivalent, and we discuss the relationships among them.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:In this paper we extend the Cheeger–Colding–Tian theory to the conic Kahler–Einstein metrics. In general, there are no smooth approximations of a family of conic Kahler–Einstein metrics with Ricci curvature uniformly bounded from below. So we have to deal with the technical issues to extend the original arguments.

Abstract:Let M be an n (>= 7)-dimensional complete submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the hyperbolic space Hn+p, whose mean curvature satisfies H-2-1 <= 0. Denote by angstrom and B-R(q) the trace free second fundamental form of M and the geodesic ball of radius R centered at q is an element of M, respectively. We prove that if lim(R ->infinity) sup integral(vertical bar angstrom vertical bar 2dM)(BR(q))/R-2 and if (integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n) dM)(2/n) + 2n(n-2)/3 root n(n-1) H(integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n/2)dM)(2/n) <= C(n), then M is congruent to an n-dimensional hyperbolic space or the Euclidean space R-n. Abstract:Conics in the Euclidean space have been known for their geometrical beauty and also for their power to model several phenomena in real life. It usually happens that when thinking about the conics in a semi-Riemannian manifold, the equations and the graphs that come to mind are those of the quadratic Euclidean equations. For example, a circle is always perceived like a closed curve. We study the geometry of the conics in the semi-Riemannian Minkowski spacetime, and interpret each equation with Euclidean eyes. By defining an extended geometric completeness for conics, we will show that the conic completeness of conics can be changed through a Euclidean mirror.

Abstract:This is a survey of metric properties of non-Euclidean conics, mainly based on works of Chasles and Story. A spherical conic is the intersection of the sphere with a quadratic cone; similarly, a hyperbolic conic is the intersection of the Beltrami-Cayley-Klein disk with an affine conic. Non-Euclidean conics have metric properties similar to those of Euclidean conics, and even more due to the polarity that works here better than in the Euclidean plane.

Abstract:In classical geometry, there is no such well-known and much-studied topic as the construction of conic sections (or briefly conics) from its five points. Its importance in many applications of mechanical engineering, civil engineering and architectural engineering, as well as other applied sciences is clear. The beauty of the topic is that it raises difficult questions that can be approached with basic tools. In this article, we provide constructions (and corresponding theories) that can be taught to high school and university students without knowledge of projective geometry. For this, we recall some important facts about conic sections that can be found in the rich literature. We use the concepts of power of a point on a circle, similarity, orthogonal affinity and inversion. We also mention famous constructions related to our questions. We begin our article at this point, where the standard teaching ends the discussion of conic sections. We therefore assume that the reader knows the basic definitions and constructions of conics, the concepts of focus, axis, tangent, leading circle and leading line.

Abstract:Hyperbolic geometry has recently found applications in social networks, machine learning and computational biology. With the increasing popularity, questions about the best representations of hyperbolic spaces arise, as each representation comes with some numerical instability. This paper compares various 2D and 3D hyperbolic geometry representations. To this end, we conduct an extensive simulational scheme based on six tests of numerical precision errors. Our comparisons include the most popular models and less-known mixed and reduced representations. According to our results, polar representation wins, although the halfplane invariant is also very successful. We complete the comparison with a brief discussion of the non-numerical advantages of various representations.

Abstract:Asgeirsson's theorem establishes a mean value property for solutions of the ultrahyperbolic equation. In the case of four variables, it states that the integrals of a solution over certain pairs of conjugate circles are the same. In this paper, the invariance of the four dimensional ultrahyperbolic equation under conformal maps of the pseudo-Euclidean space of signature 2+2 is used to get the most general version of the mean value theorem. The name non-degenerate conjugate conics is used for the most general pairs of curves over which solutions of the ultrahyperbolic equation enjoy the mean value property. These are proven to be pairs of conic sections, so that, in addition to conjugate circles which were known to exist, the picture is completed by finding mean value theorems over conjugate hyperbolae, conjugate parabolae, and line-empty pairs. In addition, Fritz John established a link between conjugate circles and the two rulings of a hyperboloid of revolution. The line incidence property of doubly ruled surfaces is used to prove a one-to-one correspondence between non-degenerate conjugate conics and pairs of rulings of doubly ruled surfaces in Euclidean 3-space.

Abstract:The purpose the present paper is to construct the hyperbolic trigonometry on Euclidean plane without refereing to hyperbolic plane. In this paper we show that the concept of hyperbolic angle and its functions forming the hyperbolic trigonometry give arise on Euclidean plane in a natural way. The method is based on a key- formula establishing a relationship between exponential function and the ratio of two segments. This formula opens a straightforward pathway to hyperbolic trigonometry on the Euclidean plane. The hyperbolic law of cosines I and II and the hyperbolic law of sines are derived by using of the key-formula and the methods of Euclidean Geometry, only. It is shown that these laws are consequences of the interrelations between distances and radii of the intersecting semi-circles.
Complete totally geodesic subsets of the complex hyperbolic plane: an elementary classification

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Abstract:We investigate the oscillatory properties of the quiet solar chromosphere in relation to the underlying photosphere, with particular regard to the effects of the magnetic topology. We perform a Fourier analysis on a sequence of line-of-sight velocities measured simultaneously in a photospheric (Fe I 709.0 nm) and a chromospheric line (Ca II 854.2 nm). The velocities were obtained from full spectroscopic data acquired at high spatial resolution with the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS). The field of view encompasses a full supergranular cell, allowing us to discriminate between areas with different magnetic characteristics. We show that waves with frequencies above the acoustic cut-off propagate from the photosphere to upper layers only in restricted areas of the quiet Sun. A large fraction of the quiet chromosphere is in fact occupied by ``magnetic shadows'', surrounding network regions, that we identify as originating from fibril-like structures observed in the core intensity of the Ca II line. We show that a large fraction of the chromospheric acoustic power at frequencies below the acoustic cut-off, residing in the proximity of the magnetic network elements, directly propagates from the underlying photosphere. This supports recent results arguing that network magnetic elements can channel low-frequency photospheric oscillations into the chromosphere, thus providing a way to input mechanical energy in the upper layers.

Abstract:We study unparametrized conformal circles, or called conformal geodesics, study diffeomorphisms mapping conformal circles to conformal circles in pseudo-Riemannian conformal manifolds. We show that such local diffeomorphisms are conformal local diffeomorphisms. Our result extends the result of Yano and Tomonaga. We also present a holographic interpretation for our result on Poincaré-Einstein manifolds. The proofs take suitable variations of conformal circles.

Abstract:The Newton line and the associated theorems by Newton and Gauss for tetragons and quadrilaterals are closely linked to some other theorems of Euclidean geometry: a theorem by Bocher on the existence of a nine-point conic of a quadrangle, a theorem by Shatunov and Tokarev, and a theorem by Anne. This paper examines to which extent all these theorems can be transferred to other metric planes, in particular the elliptic and hyperbolic planes.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the study of classical and new results concerning equidistant sets, both from the topological and metric point of view. We start with a review of the most interesting known facts about these sets in the euclidean space and then we prove that equidistant sets vary continuously with their focal sets. In the second part we propose a viewpoint in which equidistant sets can be thought of as natural generalization for conics. Along these lines, we show that many geometric features of classical conics can be retrieved in more general equidistant sets. In the Appendix we prove a shadowing property of equidistant sets and provide sharp estimates. This result should be of interest for computer simulations.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the conformal type (parabolicity or non-parabolicity) of complete ends of revolution immersed in simply connected space forms of constant sectional curvature. We show that any complete end of revolution in the $3$-dimensional Euclidean space or in the $3$-dimensional sphere is parabolic. In the case of ends of revolution in the hyperbolic $3$-dimensional space, we find sufficient conditions to attain parabolicity for complete ends of revolution using their relative position to the complete flat surfaces of revolution.
