Abstract:This is a kind of survey on properties of correlations of two very general arithmetic functions, mainly from the point of view of Ramanujan expansions. In fact, our previous papers on these links had, as a focus, the "Ramanujan coefficients" of these correlations and the resulting "R.e.e.f.", i.e., Ramanujan exact explicit formula. This holds, actually, under a variety of sufficient conditions, mainly under two conditions of convergence involving correlations' "Eratosthenes Transform", namely what we call "Delange Hypothesis" and "Wintner Assumption" (the former implying the latter). We proved Hardy-Littlewood Conjecture on $2k-$twin primes, in particular, from the first of these two (that implies convergence of classic Ramanujan expansion, whence the R.e.e.f.); more recently, we gave a more general proof, from second condition, entailing the R.e.e.f. again, but this time from another method of summation for Ramanujan expansions, we detailed in "A smooth summation of Ramanujan expansions"; in which paper (see 8th ver.) we also started to give few elementary methods for correlations. Which we deepen here, adding recent, elementary and entirely new ones.

Abstract:We elaborate on the recent suggestion to consider averaging of Cauchy identities for the Schur functions over power sum variables. This procedure has apparent parallels with the Borel transform, only it changes the number of combinatorial factors like $d_R$ in the sums over Young diagrams instead of just factorials in ordinary sums over numbers. It provides a universal view on a number of previously known, but seemingly random identities.

Abstract:We estimate the average of any arithmetic function $k$ over the values of any smooth polynomial in many variables provided only that $k$ has a distribution in arithmetic progressions of fixed modulus. We give several applications of this result including the analytic Hasse principle for an intersection of two cubics in 21 variables and asymptotics for the number of integer solutions of a non-algebraic variety.

Abstract:Recently, Donoso, Le, Moreira and Sun studied the asymptotic behavior of the averages of completely multiplicative functions over the Gaussian integers. They derived Wirsing's theorem for Gaussian integers, answered a question of Frantzikinakis and Host for sum of two squares, and obtained a variant of a theorem of Bergelson and Richter on ergodic averages along the number of prime factors of integers. In this paper, we will show the analogue of these results for co-prime integer pairs. Moreover, building on Frantzikinakis and Host's results, we obtain some convergences on the multilinear averages of multiplicative functions over primitive lattice points.

Abstract:We evaluate friable averages of arithmetic functions whose Dirichlet series is analytically close to some complex power of the Riemann zeta function. We obtain asymptotic expansions resembling those provided by the Selberg-Delange method in the non-friable case. Some application are provided to the friable distribution of the additive function counting the total number of prime factors.

Abstract:We investigate the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages along sparse sequences evaluated at prime numbers. Our sequences arise from smooth and well-behaved functions that have polynomial growth. Central to this topic is a comparison result between standard Cesáro averages along positive integers and averages weighted by the (modified) von Mangoldt function. The main ingredients are a recent result of Matomäki, Shao, Tao and Teräväinen on the Gowers uniformity of the latter function in short intervals, a lifting argument that allows one to pass from actions of integers to flows, a simultaneous (variable) polynomial approximation in appropriate short intervals, and some quantitative equidistribution results for the former polynomials. We derive numerous applications in multiple recurrence, additive combinatorics, and equidistribution in nilmanifolds along primes. In particular, we deduce that any set of positive density contains arithmetic progressions with step $\lfloor p^c \rfloor$, where $c$ is a positive non-integer and $p$ denotes a prime, establishing a conjecture of Frantzikinakis.

Abstract:We study the prime pair counting functions $\pi_{2k}(x),$ and their averages over $2k.$ We show that good results can be achieved with relatively little effort by considering averages. We prove an asymptotic relation for longer averages of $\pi_{2k}(x)$ over $2k \leq x^\theta,$ $\theta > 7/12,$ and give an almost sharp lower bound for fairly short averages over $k \leq C \log x,$ $C >1/2.$ We generalize the ideas to other related problems.

Abstract:We consider logarithmic averages, over friable integers, of non-negative multiplicative functions. Under logarithmic, one-sided or two-sided hypotheses, we obtain sharp estimates that improve upon known results in the literature regarding both the quality of the error term and the range of validity. The one-sided hypotheses correspond to classical sieve assumptions. They are applied to provide an effective form of the Johnsen--Selberg prime power sieve.

Abstract:We prove a theorem that allows one to count solutions to determinant equations twisted by a periodic weight with high uniformity in the modulus. It is obtained by using spectral methods of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ automorphic forms to study Poincaré series over congruence subgroups. By keeping track of interactions between multiple orbits we get advantages over the widely used sums of Kloosterman sums techniques. We showcase this with applications to correlations of the divisor functions twisted by periodic functions and the fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions on the critical line.

Abstract:Motivated by giving a meaning to "The probability that a random integer has initial digit d", we define a URI-set as a random set E of natural integers such that each n>0 belongs to E with probability 1/n, independently of other integers. This enables us to introduce two notions of densities on natural numbers: The URI-density, obtained by averaging along the elements of E, and the local URI-density, which we get by considering the k-th element of E and letting k go to infinity. We prove that the elements of E satisfy Benford's law, both in the sense of URI-density and in the sense of local URI-density. Moreover, if b_1 and b_2 are two multiplicatively independent integers, then the mantissae of a natural number in base b_1 and in base b_2 are independent. Connections of URI-density and local URI-density with other well-known notions of densities are established: Both are stronger than the natural density, and URI-density is equivalent to log-density. We also give a stochastic interpretation, in terms of URI-set, of the H_\infty-density.

Abstract:We study mean convergence results for weighted multiple ergodic averages defined by commuting transformations with iterates given by integer polynomials in several variables. Roughly speaking, we prove that a bounded sequence is a good universal weight for mean convergence of such averages if and only if the averages of this sequence times any nilsequence converge. Key role in the proof play two decomposition results of independent interest. The first states that every bounded sequence in several variables satisfying some regularity conditions is a sum of a nilsequence and a sequence that has small uniformity norm (this generalizes a result of the second author and B. Kra); and the second states that every multiple correlation sequence in several variables is a sum of a nilsequence and a sequence that is small in uniform density (this generalizes a result of the first author). Furthermore, we use the previous results in order to establish mean convergence and recurrence results for a variety of sequences of dynamical and arithmetic origin and give some combinatorial implications.

Abstract:In this paper we study the mapping properties of the averaging operator over a variety given by a system of homogeneous equations over a finite field. We obtain optimal results on the averaging problems over two dimensional varieties whose elements are common solutions of diagonal homogeneous equations. The proof is based on a careful study of algebraic and geometric properties of such varieties. In particular, we show that they are not contained in any hyperplane and are complete intersections. We also address partial results on averaging problems over arbitrary dimensional homogeneous varieties which are smooth away from the origin.

Abstract:We study a generalization of the classical Dedekind sum that incorporates two Dirichlet characters and develop properties that generalize those of the classical Dedekind sum. By calculating the Fourier transform of this generalized Dedekind sum, we obtain an explicit formula for its second moment. Finally, we derive upper and lower bounds for the second moment with nearly identical orders of magnitude.
