Abstract:Chen et al. (1998) proved that every 18-tough chordal graph has a Hamilton cycle. Improving upon their bound, we show that every 10-tough chordal graph is Hamiltonian (in fact, Hamilton-connected). We use Aharoni and Haxell's hypergraph extension of Hall's Theorem as our main tool.

Abstract:The hamiltonian problem is an important topic in structural graph theory, which is closely related to Four Color Problem. Hence lots of graph scholars are dedicated to this topic. There are many authors working for finding some sufficient conditions for hamiltonian property of graphs. Let G be a claw-free graph with n vertices and δ(G)≥3. In this paper, we show that if G has an induced cycle of length more than (4n – 2δ(G)–4)(δ(G)+2)−1, then G is hamiltonian. The result is best possible if δG is 3 or 4.

Abstract:A graph $G$ has the \emph{Perfect Matching Hamiltonian property} (or for short, $G$ is $PMH$) if, for each one of its perfect matchings, there is another perfect matching of $G$ such that the union of the two perfect matchings yields a Hamiltonian cycle of $G$. In this note, we show that \emph{Prism graphs} $\cP_n$ are not $PMH$, except for the $Cube\ graph$, and indicate for which values of $n$ the \emph{Crossed Prism graphs} $\cCP_n$ are $PMH$.

Abstract:It was shown by Kutnar, Maru\v si\v c and Zhang in 2012 that every connected vertex-transitive graph of order $10p$, where $p$ is a prime and $p\ne 7$, contains a Hamilton path, except for graphs $X$ arising from the action of PSL$(2, s^m)$ on cosets of $\mathbb{Z}_s^m\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_{\frac{s^m-1}{10}}$, where $s$ is a prime. In this paper, Hamilton cycles of these exceptions $X$ will be found.

Abstract:The prism over a graph $G$ is the Cartesian product of $G$ with the complete graph $K_2$. A graph $G$ is hamiltonian if there exists a spanning cycle in $G$, and $G$ is prism-hamiltonian if the prism over $G$ is hamiltonian. In [M.~Rosenfeld, D.~Barnette, Hamiltonian circuits in certain prisms, Discrete Math. 5 (1973), 389--394] the authors conjectured that every 3-connected planar graph is prism-hamiltonian. We construct a counterexample to the conjecture.

Abstract:Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $\lambda(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $\lambda(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Abstract:We prove that if Cay(G;S) is a connected Cayley graph with n vertices, and the prime factorization of n is very small, then Cay(G;S) has a hamiltonian cycle. More precisely, if p, q, and r are distinct primes, then n can be of the form kp with k < 32 and k not equal to 24, or of the form kpq with k < 6, or of the form pqr, or of the form kp^2 with k < 5, or of the form kp^3 with k < 3.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every 3-connected claw-free graph such that every induced cycle of length at least 4 has at most 8 edges contained in a triangle is hamiltonian. This implies that every 3-connected $\{K_{1,3}\}\cup \{C_i|i\ge 9\}$-free graph is hamiltonian. We also show that every 3-connected o-heavy graph whose induced cycle of length is at most 8 is hamiltonian and that every 2-connected claw-free graph of longest induced cycle with length at least $n-2$ is hamiltonian. These results are all best possible. As a byproduct, we show that it is NP-complete to determine the length of a longest induced cycle of a line graph.

Abstract:The toughness of a noncomplete graph $G$ is the maximum real number $t$ such that the ratio of $|S|$ to the number of components of $G-S$ is at least $t$ for every cutset $S$ of $G$, and the toughness of a complete graph is defined to be $\infty$. Determining the toughness for a given graph is NP-hard. Chv\'{a}tal's toughness conjecture, stating that there exists a constant $t_0$ such that every graph with toughness at least $t_0$ is hamiltonian, is still open for general graphs. A graph is called $(P_3\cup 2P_1)$-free if it does not contain any induced subgraph isomorphic to $P_3\cup 2P_1$, the disjoint union of $P_3$ and two isolated vertices. In this paper, we confirm Chv\'{a}tal's toughness conjecture for $(P_3\cup 2P_1)$-free graphs by showing that every 7-tough $(P_3\cup 2P_1)$-free graph on at least three vertices is hamiltonian.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph of even order, and consider $K_G$ as the complete graph on the same vertex set as $G$. A perfect matching of $K_G$ is called a pairing of $G$. If for every pairing $M$ of $G$ it is possible to find a perfect matching $N$ of $G$ such that $M \cup N$ is a Hamiltonian cycle of $K_G$, then $G$ is said to have the Pairing-Hamiltonian property, or PH-property, for short. In 2007, Fink [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 97] proved that for every $d\geq 2$, the $d$-dimensional hypercube $\mathcal{Q}_d$ has the PH-property, thus proving a conjecture posed by Kreweras in 1996. In this paper we extend Fink's result by proving that given a graph $G$ having the PH-property, the prism graph $\mathcal{P}(G)$ of $G$ has the PH-property as well. Moreover, if $G$ is a connected graph, we show that there exists a positive integer $k_0$ such that the $k^{\textrm{th}}$-prism of a graph $\mathcal{P}^k(G)$ has the PH-property for all $k \ge k_0$.

Another Hamiltonian Cycle in Bipartite Pfaffian Graphs

Abstract:Finding a Hamiltonian cycle in a given graph is computationally challenging, and in general remains so even when one is further given one Hamiltonian cycle in the graph and asked to find another. In fact, no significantly faster algorithms are known for finding another Hamiltonian cycle than for finding a first one even in the setting where another Hamiltonian cycle is structurally guaranteed to exist, such as for odd-degree graphs. We identify a graph class -- the bipartite Pfaffian graphs of minimum degree three -- where it is NP-complete to decide whether a given graph in the class is Hamiltonian, but when presented with a Hamiltonian cycle as part of the input, another Hamiltonian cycle can be found efficiently. We prove that Thomason's lollipop method~[Ann.~Discrete Math.,~1978], a well-known algorithm for finding another Hamiltonian cycle, runs in a linear number of steps in cubic bipartite Pfaffian graphs. This was conjectured for cubic bipartite planar graphs by Haddadan [MSc~thesis,~Waterloo,~2015]; in contrast, examples are known of both cubic bipartite graphs and cubic planar graphs where the lollipop method takes exponential time. Beyond the lollipop method, we address a slightly more general graph class and present two algorithms, one running in linear-time and one operating in logarithmic space, that take as input (i) a bipartite Pfaffian graph $G$ of minimum degree three, (ii) a Hamiltonian cycle $H$ in $G$, and (iii) an edge $e$ in $H$, and output at least three other Hamiltonian cycles through the edge $e$ in $G$. We also present further improved algorithms for finding optimal traveling salesperson tours and counting Hamiltonian cycles in bipartite planar graphs with running times that are not known to hold in general planar graphs.

Abstract:The prism over a graph $G$ is the Cartesian product of $G$ with the complete graph $K_2$. $G$ is prism-hamiltonian if the prism over $G$ has a Hamilton cycle. A good even cactus is a connected graph in which every block is either an edge or an even cycle, and every vertex is contained in at most two blocks. It is known that good even cacti are prism-hamiltonian. Indeed, showing the existence of a spanning good even cactus has become one of the most common techniques in proving prism-hamiltonicity. Špacapan asked whether having a spanning good even cactus is equivalent to having a hamiltonian prism for 3-connected planar graphs. In this article we give a negative answer to this question by showing that there are infinitely many 3-connected planar prism-hamiltonian graphs that have no spanning good even cactus. We also prove the existence of an infinite class of 3-connected planar graphs that have a spanning good even cactus but no spanning good even cactus with maximum degree three.

Hamiltonian Cycles on Ammann-Beenker Tilings

Abstract:We provide a simple algorithm for constructing Hamiltonian graph cycles (visiting every vertex exactly once) on a set of arbitrarily large finite subgraphs of aperiodic two-dimensional Ammann-Beenker (AB) tilings. Using this result, and the discrete scale symmetry of AB tilings, we find exact solutions to a range of other problems which lie in the complexity class NP-complete for general graphs. These include the equal-weight traveling salesperson problem, providing, for example, the most efficient route a scanning tunneling microscope tip could take to image the atoms of physical quasicrystals with AB symmetries; the longest path problem, whose solution demonstrates that collections of flexible molecules of any length can adsorb onto AB quasicrystal surfaces at density one, with possible applications to catalysis; and the three-coloring problem, giving ground states for the $q$-state Potts model ($q \ge 3$) of magnetic interactions defined on the planar dual to AB, which may provide useful models for protein folding.

Abstract:We consider facet-Hamiltonian cycles of polytopes, defined as cycles in their skeleton such that every facet is visited exactly once. These cycles can be understood as optimal watchman routes that guard the facets of a polytope. We consider the existence of such cycles for a variety of polytopes, the facets of which have a natural combinatorial interpretation. In particular, we prove the following results: - Every permutahedron has a facet-Hamiltonian cycle. These cycles consist of circular sequences of permutations of $n$ elements, where two successive permutations differ by a single adjacent transposition, and such that every subset of $[n]$ appears as a prefix in a contiguous subsequence. With these cycles we associate what we call rhombic strips which encode interleaved Gray codes of the Boolean lattice, one Gray code for each rank. These rhombic strips correspond to simple Venn diagrams. - Every generalized associahedron has a facet-Hamiltonian cycle. This generalizes the so-called rainbow cycles of Felsner, Kleist, Mütze, and Sering (SIDMA 2020) to associahedra of any finite type. We relate the constructions to the Conway-Coxeter friezes and the bipartite belts of finite type cluster algebras. - Graph associahedra of wheels, fans, and complete split graphs have facet-Hamiltonian cycles. For associahedra of complete bipartite graphs and caterpillars, we construct facet-Hamiltonian paths. The construction involves new insights on the combinatorics of graph tubings. We also consider the computational complexity of deciding whether a given polytope has a facet-Hamiltonian cycle and show that the problem is NP-complete, even when restricted to simple 3-dimensional polytopes.

Abstract:We classify finite primitive permutation groups having a suborbit of length 5. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of finite vertex-primitive graphs of valency 5. In the process, we also classify finite almost simple groups that have a maximal subgroup isomorphic to $\mathrm{Alt}(5)$ or $\mathrm{Sym}(5)$.

Abstract:The existence of Hamiltonian cycles in 1-planar graphs with higher connectivity has attracted considerable attention. Recently, the authors and Dong proved that 4-connected 1-planar chordal graphs are Hamiltonian-connected. In this paper, we investigate the non-Hamiltonicity of a broader class of graphs, specifically perfect graphs, under the constraint of 1-planarity, with a focus on connectivity of at most 5. We also propose some unsolved problems.
