Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable infinite amenable group and $P$ be a polyhedron. We give a construction of minimal subshifts of $P^G$ with arbitrarily mean topological dimension less than $\dim P$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an infinite countable amenable group and $P$ a polyhedron with topological dimension $dim(P)<\infty$. We construct a minimal subshift $(X,G)$ such that its mean topological dimension is equal to $dim(P)$. This result answers the question of D. Dou in \cite{DD}, moreover, it is also an extension of the work of L. Jin and Y. Qiao \cite{JQ} for $\mathbb{Z}$-action.

Subshifts of finite symbolic rank

Abstract:The definition of subshifts of finite symbolic rank is motivated by the finite rank measure-preserving transformations which have been extensively studied in ergodic theory. In this paper we study subshifts of finite symbolic rank as essentially minimal Cantor systems. We show that minimal subshifts of finite symbolic rank have finite topological rank, and conversely, every minimal Cantor system of finite topological rank is either an odometer or conjugate to a minimal subshift of finite symbolic rank. We characterize the class of all minimal Cantor systems conjugate to a rank-$1$ subshift and show that it is dense but not generic in the Polish space of all minimal Cantor systems. Within some different Polish coding spaces of subshifts we also show that the rank-1 subshifts are dense but not generic. Finally we study topological factors of minimal subshifts of finite symbolic rank. We show that every infinite odometer and every irrational rotation is the maximal equicontinuous factor of a minimal subshift of symbolic rank $2$, and that a subshift factor of a minimal subshift of finite symbolic rank has finite symbolic rank.

Abstract:We study topological mixing properties and the maximal equicontinuous factor of rank-one subshifts as topological dynamical systems. We show that the maximal equicontinuous factor of a rank-one subshift is finite. We also determine all the finite factors of a rank-one shift with a condition involving the cutting and spacer parameters. For rank-one subshifts with bounded spacer parameter we completely characterize weak mixing and mixing. For rank-one subshifts with unbounded spacer parameter we prove some sufficient conditions for weak mixing and mixing. We also construct some examples showing that the characterizations for the bounded spacer parameter case do not generalize to the unbounded spacer parameter case.

Abstract:We prove that the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to any surjective aperiodic one-sided subshift with finitely many left special elements has finite nuclear dimension, which is especially the case for every surjective aperiodic subshift with nonsuperlinear-growth complexity. As a generalization, we define the notions of left speical set, the topological Rokhlin dimension, the tower dimension and the amenability dimension for every local homeomorphism. Then we turn to prove that, for every surjective local homeomorphism with a finite left special set consisting of isolated points, these dimensions along with the dynamic asymptotic dimension are all finite.

Generic differentiability and $P$-minimal groups

Abstract:We prove generic differentiability in $P$-minimal theories, strengthening an earlier result of Kuijpers and Leenknegt. Using this, we prove Onshuus and Pillay's $P$-minimal analogue of Pillay's conjectures on o-minimal groups. Specifically, let $G$ be an $n$-dimensional definable group in a highly saturated model $M$ of a $P$-minimal theory. Then there is an open definable subgroup $H \subseteq G$ such that $H$ is compactly dominated by $H/H^{00}$, and $H/H^{00}$ is a $p$-adic Lie group of the expected dimension. Additionally, the generic differentiability theorem immediately implies a classification of interpretable fields in $P$-minimal theories, by work of Halevi, Hasson, and Peterzil.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a finite dimensional compact metric space and $K^\mathbb{Z}$ the full shift on the alphabet $K$. We prove that its mean dimension is given by $\dim K$ or $\dim K-1$ depending on the "type" of $K$. We propose a problem which seems interesting from the view point of infinite dimensional topology.

Abstract:In this article we introduce a definition of topological minimal sets, which is a generalization of that of Mumford-Shah-minimal sets. We prove some general properties as well as two existence theorems for topological minimal sets. As an application we prove the topological minimality of the union of two almost orthogonal planes in $\R^4$, and use it to improve the angle criterion under which the union of several higher dimensional planes is Almgren-minimal.

Topo-isomorphisms of irregular Toeplitz subshifts for residually finite groups

Abstract:For each countable residually finite group $G$, we present examples of irregular Toeplitz subshifts in $\{0,1\}^G$ that are topo-isomorphic extensions of its maximal equicontinuous factor. To achieve this, we first establish sufficient conditions for Toeplitz subshifts to have invariant probability measures as limit points of periodic invariant measures of $\{0,1\}^G$. Next, we demonstrate that the set of Toeplitz subshifts satisfying these conditions is non-empty. When the acting group $G$ is amenable, this construction provides non-regular extensions of totally disconnected metric compactifications of $G$ that are (Weyl) mean-quicontinuous dynamical systems.

Minimal zero entropy subshifts can be unrestricted along any sparse set

Abstract:We present a streamlined proof of a result essentially present in previous work of the author, namely that for every set $S = \{s_1, s_2, \ldots\} \subset \mathbb{N}$ of zero Banach density and finite set $A$, there exists a minimal zero-entropy subshift $(X, \sigma)$ so that for every sequence $u \in A^\mathbb{Z}$, there is $x_u \in X$ with $x_u(s_n) = u(n)$ for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$. Informally, minimal deterministic sequences can achieve completely arbitrary behavior upon restriction to a set of zero Banach density. As a corollary, this provides counterexamples to the Polynomial Sarnak Conjecture which are significantly more general than some recently provided in word of Kanigowski, Lemańczyk, and Radziwiłłand of Lian and Shi, and shows that no similar result can hold under only the assumptions of minimality and zero entropy.

Key subgroups in topological groups

Abstract:We introduce two minimality properties of subgroups in topological groups. A subgroup $H$ is a key subgroup (co-key subgroup) of a topological group $G$ if there is no strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology on $G$ which induces on $H$ (resp., on the coset space $G/H$) the original topology. Every co-minimal subgroup is a key subgroup while the converse is not true. Every locally compact co-compact subgroup is a key subgroup (but not always co-minimal). Any relatively minimal subgroup is a co-key subgroup (but not vice versa). Extending some results concerning the generalized Heisenberg groups, we prove that the center ("corner" subgroup) of the upper unitriangular group $\mathrm{UT(n,K)}$, defined over a commutative topological unital ring $K$, is a key subgroup. Every "non-corner" 1-parameter subgroup $H$ of $\mathrm{UT(n,K)}$ is a co-key subgroup. We study injectivity property of the restriction map $$r_H \colon \mathcal{T}_{\downarrow}(G) \to \mathcal{T}_{\downarrow}(H), \ \sigma \mapsto \sigma|_H$$ and show that it is an isomorphism of sup-semilattices for every central co-minimal subgroup $H$, where $\mathcal{T}_{\downarrow}(G)$ is the semilattice of coarser Hausdorff group topologies on $G$.

The topological structure of isolated points in the space of $\mathbb{Z}^d$-shifts

Abstract:R.Pavlov and S.Schmieding provided recently some synthetic results about generic $\mathbb{Z}$-shifts, which rely mainly on an original theorem stating that isolated points form a residual set in the space of $\mathbb{Z}$-shifts such that all other residual set must contain it. As a direction for further research, they pointed towards genericity in the space of $\mathbb{G}$-shifts, where $\mathbb{G}$ is a finitely generated group. In the present text, we approach this for the case of $\mathbb{Z}^d$-shifts, where $d \ge 2$. As it is usual, multidimensional dynamical systems are much more difficult to understand. Provided the result of R.Pavlov and S.Schmieding, it is natural to begin with a better understanding of isolated points. We prove here a characterization of such points in the space of $\mathbb{Z}^d$-shifts, in terms of the natural notion of maximal subsystems which we also introduce in this article. From this characterization we recover the one of R.Pavlov and S.Schmieding's. We also prove a series of results which exploit this notion. In particular some transitivity-like properties can be related to the number of maximal subsystems. Furthermore, on the contrary of dimension one, the set of isolated shifts is not residual. We also prove that the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the space of $\mathbb{Z}^d$-shifts is infinite when $d > 1$, while it is equal to one when $d=1$.

Abstract:A topological group G is called locally minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of 1 in G such that if H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous isomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H, then f is open. This paper is focused on the study of quotients of locally minimal groups.A topological group G is called locally q-minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of the identity of G such that whenever H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous surjective homomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H, then f is open. We find a close connection between locally q-minimality and divisibility, by showing that a dense subgroup of Rn is locally q-minimal if and only if it is divisible. A description of the locally q-minimal subgroups of the n-dimensional torus Tn is also given.Two weaker versions of local q-minimality are proposed – a topological group G is:(a)locally t-minimal, if all Hausdorff quotients of G are locally minimal;(b)locally q⁎-minimal, if there exists a neighbourhood V of 1 in G such that whenever H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous surjective homomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H and ker⁡f⊆V, then f is open.While local q-minimality and local t-minimality are preserved by taking quotients, local q⁎-minimality fails to have this property (so does not coincide with local t-minimality), yet it has a relevant advantage. By means of an appropriate notion of local t-density, one can show that a dense subgroup H of a Hausdorff group G is locally q⁎-minimal if and only if G is locally q⁎-minimal and H is locally t-dense in G. Similar criterion for local q-minimality is not available (examples are given to show that a topological group with a dense locally q-minimal subgroup need not be locally q-minimal). The interrelations of these three versions of local minimality, as well as their prominence properties are studied in detail.

Abstract:We study shift spaces over a finite alphabet that can be approximated by mixing shifts of finite type in the sense of (pseudo)metrics connected to Ornstein's $\bar{d}$ metric ($\bar{d}$-approachable shift spaces). The class of $\bar{d}$-approachable shifts can be considered as a topological analog of measure-theoretical Bernoulli systems. The notion of $\bar{d}$-approachability together with a closely connected notion of $\bar{d}$-shadowing were introduced by Konieczny, Kupsa, and Kwietniak [in \emph{Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems}, vol. \textbf{43} (2023), issue 3, pp. 943--970]. These notions were developed with the aim to significantly generalize specification properties. Indeed, many popular variants of the specification property, including the classic one and almost/weak specification property ensure $\bar{d}$-approachability and $\bar{d}$-shadowing. Here, we study further properties and connections between $\bar{d}$-shadowing and $\bar{d}$-approachability. We prove that $\bar{d}$-shadowing implies $\bar{d}$-stability (a notion recently introduced by Tim Austin). We show that for surjective shift spaces with the $\bar{d}$-shadowing property the Hausdorff pseudodistance $\bar{d}^H$ between shift spaces induced by $\bar{d}$ is the same as the Hausdorff distance between their simiplices of invariant measures with respect to the Hausdorff distance induced by the Ornstein's metric $\bar{d}$ between measures. We prove that without $\bar{d}$-shadowing this need not to be true (it is known that the former distance always bounds the latter). We provide examples illustrating these results including minimal examples and proximal examples of shift spaces with the $\bar{d}$-shadowing property. The existence of such shift spaces was announced in our earlier paper [op. cit.]. It shows that $\bar{d}$-shadowing indeed generalises the specification property.

Abstract:A space $X$ is submaximal if any dense subset of $X$ is open. In this paper, we prove that every submaximal topological gyrogroup of non-measurable cardinality is strongly $\sigma$-discrete. Moreover, we prove that every submaximal strongly topological gyrogroup of non-measurable cardinality is hereditarily paracompact.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly elucidate a close relationship between the topological entropy and mean dimension theory for actions of polynomial growth groups. We show that metric mean dimension and mean Hausdorff dimension of subshifts with respect to the lower rank subgroup are equal to its topological entropy multiplied by the growth rate of the subgroup. Meanwhile, we also prove the above result holds for the rate distortion dimension of subshifts with respect to the lower rank subgroup and measure entropy. Furthermore, some relevant examples are indicated.
