Abstract:We introduce two minimality properties of subgroups in topological groups. A subgroup $H$ is a key subgroup (co-key subgroup) of a topological group $G$ if there is no strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology on $G$ which induces on $H$ (resp., on the coset space $G/H$) the original topology. Every co-minimal subgroup is a key subgroup while the converse is not true. Every locally compact co-compact subgroup is a key subgroup (but not always co-minimal). Any relatively minimal subgroup is a co-key subgroup (but not vice versa). Extending some results concerning the generalized Heisenberg groups, we prove that the center ("corner" subgroup) of the upper unitriangular group $\mathrm{UT(n,K)}$, defined over a commutative topological unital ring $K$, is a key subgroup. Every "non-corner" 1-parameter subgroup $H$ of $\mathrm{UT(n,K)}$ is a co-key subgroup. We study injectivity property of the restriction map $$r_H \colon \mathcal{T}_{\downarrow}(G) \to \mathcal{T}_{\downarrow}(H), \ \sigma \mapsto \sigma|_H$$ and show that it is an isomorphism of sup-semilattices for every central co-minimal subgroup $H$, where $\mathcal{T}_{\downarrow}(G)$ is the semilattice of coarser Hausdorff group topologies on $G$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the minimal properties of subgroups in topological groups. Specifically, the author introduces two new subgroup properties - key subgroup and co - key subgroup, and studies the manifestations and properties of these subgroups in different topological groups. The main objectives of the paper are:
1. **Define key subgroup and co - key subgroup**:
- **Key subgroup**: A subgroup \(H\) is a key subgroup of a topological group \(G\) if for any strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology \(\gamma_1\subseteq\gamma\) of \(G\), if \(\gamma_1\) and \(\gamma\) are the same on \(H\), then \(\gamma_1 = \gamma\).
- **Co - key subgroup**: A subgroup \(H\) is a co - key subgroup of a topological group \(G\) if for any strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology \(\gamma_1\subseteq\gamma\) of \(G\), if \(\gamma_1/H\) and \(\gamma/H\) are the same, then \(\gamma_1=\gamma\).
2. **Study the properties of these subgroups**:
- The paper explores the relationship between key subgroups and co - key subgroups. For example, every relatively minimal subgroup is a co - key subgroup, but the converse is not true.
- It studies the key properties of locally compact co - compact subgroups and proves that these subgroups are always key subgroups.
3. **Apply to specific topological groups**:
- In particular, the paper studies the key properties of central subgroups in the generalized Heisenberg group \(H(w)\), as well as the subgroup properties in the upper triangular unipotent matrix group \(UT(n, K)\).
- It proves that the central subgroup (i.e., the "corner subgroup") of \(UT(n, K)\) is a key subgroup, and each non - corner 1 - parameter subgroup is a co - key subgroup.
4. **Injective properties of restriction maps**:
- The paper also studies the injective properties of the restriction map \(r_H: T\downarrow(G)\to T\downarrow(H)\) and proves that for a centrally co - minimal subgroup \(H\), \(r_H\) is a semilattice isomorphism.
Through these studies, the paper aims to deepen the understanding of the properties of subgroups in topological groups, especially the exploration in terms of minimality and co - minimality.
