History and Overview

Abstract:The early Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer published a book on geometry a few years before he died. This was intended to be a guide for young craftsmen and artists giving them both practical and mathematical tools for their trade. In the second part of that book, Durer gives compass and straightedge constructions for the 'regular' polygons from the triangle to the 16-gon. We will examine each of these constructions using the original 1525 text and diagrams along with a translation. Then we will use Mathematica to carry out the constructions which are only approximate, in order to compare them with the regular case. In Appendix A, we discuss Durer's approximate trisection method for angles, which is surprisingly accurate. Appendix B outlines what is known currently about compass and straightedge constructions and includes two elegant 19th century constructions.

Abstract:Choose a polynomial in three variables with not more than three or four monomials of moderate degree. Take simple coefficients as 1 and -1. Then draw a picture of the solution variety in real three space using a ray-tracing program like POV-Ray, Surf or Spicy. Go to your colleague in the next room, show her/him the picture and ask for a suitable equation. This is the theme of the article: The problem of recognizing the algebraic definition of a geometric object, in this case a real algebraic surface. We do not offer any answers or results. 24 surfaces are presented, each in two different views, but without equations. Abstract:This is a study of a problem in geodesy with methods from complex algebraic geometry: for a fixed number of measure points and target points at unknown position in the Euclidean plane, we study the problem of determining their relative position when the viewing angles between target points seen from measure points are known. In particular, we determine all situations in which there is more than one solution.

Abstract:We study the problem how to draw a planar graph crossing-free such that every vertex is incident to an angle greater than π. In general a plane straight-line drawing cannot guarantee this property. We present algorithms which construct such drawings with either tangent-continuous biarcs or quadratic Bézier curves (parabolic arcs), even if the positions of the vertices are predefined by a given plane straight-line drawing of the graph. Moreover, the graph can be drawn with circular arcs if the vertices can be placed arbitrarily. The topic is related to non-crossing drawings of multigraphs and vertex labeling.

Abstract:The formula for the area of a rhumb polygon, a polygon whose edges are rhumb lines on an ellipsoid of revolution, is derived and a method is given for computing the area accurately. This paper also points out that standard methods for computing rhumb lines give inaccurate results for nearly east- or west-going lines; this problem is remedied by the systematic use of divided differences.

Abstract:Can we compute what we cannot draw? How must we draw to produce measurable representations, or visual ones? This research inquires into the relationship between mathematics and figurative representation, and more precisely between drawing and computation. The scientific imagery studied here is the representation of the five platonic solids, discussing various representation techniques from classical antiquity to modern times, and their efficacy to help calculate sizes and proportional ratios. Scholars in history of architectural drawing have too often limited their observations to the very few preserved plans and front views dating back to classical antiquity, without enlarging their investigation to other scientific fields that also rely on drawing as a research tool and communication device. Among these other fields stands the mathematical research, especially solid geometry which deals with objects and entities that have shapes that needs to be somehow drawn in 3D to be studied.

Abstract:Using a simple transfer matrix approach we have derived very long series expansions for the perimeter generating function of punctured staircase polygons (staircase polygons with a single internal staircase hole). We find that all the terms in the generating function can be reproduced from a linear Fuchsian differential equation of order 8. We perform an analysis of the properties of the differential equation.

Abstract:Abstract The paper presents a coherent, original theory and an effective algorithm to calculate the surface area of a geodesic polygon, i.e. the area on an ellipsoid of revolution limited by geodesics, connecting pairs of subsequent vertices of known geographical coordinates. Using the cylindrical coordinate system and introducing an equatorial geodesic triangle, the novel strict recursive formulas were derived for the longitude on the ellipsoid and the distance along the geodesic and the area of a geodesic polygon. The area is determined by constant coefficients, not the values of finite series. The orthodromic properties of geodesics, which led to the detection of bifurcation lines composed of the double solutions of the inverse geodetic problem were analysed. The novel algorithm presented, integrating the problem with geodesic polygon area calculation, is based on the newly proposed parameterisation with two alternative working unknowns and a new formula to obtain the initial value of the geodesic C parameter. It allows solutions for all cases, including near-antipodal or near-vertices, and offers two solutions if bifurcation occurs. The algorithm presented was tested and verified using numerical examples from known publications. The numerical tests proved the accuracy of 1m 2 of the computed geodesic area using standard IEEE 754 Double Floating Point PC arithmetic, for geodesic lengths up to ten thousand km.

Abstract:To produce cartographic maps, simplification is typically used to reduce complexity of the map to a legible level. With schematic maps, however, this simplification is pushed far beyond the legibility threshold and is instead constrained by functional need and resemblance. Moreover, stylistic geometry is often used to convey the schematic nature of the map. In this paper we explore discretized approaches to computing a schematic shape $S$ for a simple polygon $P$. We do so by overlaying a plane graph $G$ on $P$ as the solution space for the schematic shape. Topological constraints imply that $S$ should describe a simple polygon. We investigate two approaches, simple map matching and connected face selection, based on commonly used similarity metrics. With the former, $S$ is a simple cycle $C$ in $G$ and we quantify resemblance via the Fréchet distance. We prove that it is NP-hard to compute a cycle that approximates the minimal Fréchet distance over all simple cycles in a plane graph $G$. This result holds even if $G$ is a partial grid graph, if area preservation is required and if we assume a given sequence of turns is specified. With the latter, $S$ is a connected face set in $G$, quantifying resemblance via the symmetric difference. Though the symmetric difference seems a less strict measure, we prove that it is NP-hard to compute the optimal face set. This result holds even if $G$ is full grid graph or a triangular or hexagonal tiling, and if area preservation is required. Moreover, it is independent of whether we allow the set of faces to have holes or not.

Abstract:Closed form solutions for the computation of the solid angle from polygonal cross-sections are well known, however similar formulae for computation of projected solid angle are not generally available. Formulae for computing the projected solid angle from arbitrarily shaped polygons are derived using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. This is accomplished by transforming the projected solid angle integral to an integral over a spherical patch, which is then reduced by Gauss-Bonnet to a simple summation over its edges, allowing the projected solid angle to be computed exactly. Application of the formulae allows exact calculation of projected solid angle over discrete intervals which may be used for computing radiative flux to surfaces or view factors to free space.

Abstract:A problem that is simple to state in the context of spherical geometry, and that seems rather interesting, appears to have been unexamined to date in the mathematical literature. The problem can also be recast as a problem in the real projective plane. The problem on the sphere involves four great circles and their intersections. A substantial claim is made concerning this problem, and subsequently proved by relating the spherical problem to a compelling problem in solid geometry. This latter problem essentially concerns relationships between the angles of a tetrahedron, and has practical applications, particularly in connection with the Perspective 3-Point (Pose) Problem.

Abstract:The Newton line and the associated theorems by Newton and Gauss for tetragons and quadrilaterals are closely linked to some other theorems of Euclidean geometry: a theorem by Bocher on the existence of a nine-point conic of a quadrangle, a theorem by Shatunov and Tokarev, and a theorem by Anne. This paper examines to which extent all these theorems can be transferred to other metric planes, in particular the elliptic and hyperbolic planes.

Abstract:New mathematical hypotheses are postulated concerning the truncated rhombohedron in Dürer's engraving Melencolia.I as well as the relation of the rhombohedron to the magic square. The two free parameters of a truncated rhombohedron have to be chosen in a way that (i) its front orthogonal elevation is nearly quadratical and with the form of the magic square, and that (ii) it possesses approximately a circumscribed sphere. Both conditions result in a value of 79.2 degrees for the angle of the rhombohedron. Measuring two lengths of the rhombohedron of the engraving yields the same value. In the magic square, the numbers are positioned in a way that the connection lines between four numbers give the sum 34 for lines which are the projection lines of the edges of the rhombohedron. In the Nürnberg-Codex of Dürer's manuscripts, exists a page with some sketches of mostly archimedean solids. One sketch represents a pentagon with approximately the measures of the six lateral faces of the truncated rhombohedron. It has to be looked upon as a preliminary sketch for the solid of the engraving. In 1543 Augustin Hirschvogel from Nürnberg, as the next after Dürer, rediscovered a further archimedean solid; this rediscovering has been attributed to D. Barbaro until now.
Enumeration of corner polyhedra and 3-connected Schnyder labelings

Abstract:We show that corner polyhedra and 3-connected Schnyder labelings join the growing list of planar structures that can be set in exact correspondence with (weighted) models of quadrant walks via a bijection due to Kenyon, Miller, Sheffield and Wilson. Our approach leads to a first polynomial time algorithm to count these structures, and to the determination of their exact asymptotic growth constants: the number $p_n$ of corner polyhedra and $s_n$ of 3-connected Schnyder labelings of size $n$ respectively satisfy $(p_n)^{1/n}\to 9/2$ and $(s_n)^{1/n}\to 16/3$ as $n$ goes to infinity. While the growth rates are rational, like in the case of previously known instances of such correspondences, the exponent of the asymptotic polynomial correction to the exponential growth does not appear to follow from the now standard Denisov-Wachtel approach, due to a bimodal behavior of the step set of the underlying tandem walk. However a heuristic argument suggests that these exponents are $-1-\pi/\arccos(9/16)\approx -4.23$ for $p_n$ and $-1-\pi/\arccos(22/27)\approx -6.08$ for $s_n$, which would imply that the associated series are not D-finite.

A census of graph-drawing algorithms based on generalized transversal structures

Abstract:We present two graph drawing algorithms based on the recently defined "grand-Schnyder woods", which are a far-reaching generalization of the classical Schnyder woods. The first is a straight-line drawing algorithm for plane graphs with faces of degree 3 and 4 with no separating 3-cycle, while the second is a rectangular drawing algorithm for the dual of such plane graphs. In our algorithms, the coordinates of the vertices are defined in a global manner, based on the underlying grand-Schnyder woods. The grand-Schnyder woods and drawings are computed in linear time. When specializing our algorithms to special classes of plane graphs, we recover the following known algorithms: (1) He's algorithm for rectangular drawing of 3-valent plane graphs, based on transversal structures, (2) Fusy's algorithm for the straight-line drawing of triangulations of the square, based on transversal structures, (3) Bernardi and Fusy's algorithm for the orthogonal drawing of 4-valent plane graphs, based on 2-orientations, (4) Barriere and Huemer's algorithm for the straight-line drawing of quadrangulations, based on separating decompositions. Our contributions therefore provide a unifying perspective on a large family of graph drawing algorithms that were originally defined on different classes of plane graphs and were based on seemingly different combinatorial structures.

New four-vertex type theorems for spherical polygons

Abstract:We prove discrete analogs of four-vertex type theorems of spherical curves, which imply corresponding results for space polygons. The smooth theory goes back to the work of Beniamino Segre and, more recently, by Mohammad Ghomi, and consists of theorems that state, for a given closed spherical curve, nontrivial lower bounds on the number of spherical inflections plus the number of self and/or antipodal intersections counted with multiplicity. We study these concepts and results adapted to the case of spherical polygons and prove, using only discrete tools, the corresponding theorems.

Abstract:Every polygon with n vertices in the complex projective plane is naturally associated with its adjoint curve of degree n-3. Hence the adjoint of a heptagon is a plane quartic. We prove that a general plane quartic is the adjoint of exactly 864 distinct complex heptagons. This number had been numerically computed by Kohn et al. We use intersection theory and the Scorza correspondence for quartics to show that 864 is an upper bound, complemented by a lower bound obtained through explicit analysis of the famous Klein quartic.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate some polynomial conditions that arise from Euclidean geometry. First we study polynomials related to quadrilaterals with supplementary angles, this includes convex cyclic quadrilaterals, as well as certain concave quadrilaterals. Then we consider polynomials associated with quadrilaterals with some equal angles, which include convex and concave tilted kites. Some of the results are proved using Groebner bases computations.

Abstract:The first goal of this paper is to prove a sharp condition to guarantee of having a positive proportion of all congruence classes of triangles in given sets in ūĚĒĹ q 2 . More precisely, for A , B , C ‚äā ūĚĒĹ q 2 , if | A | ‚ĀĘ | B | ‚ĀĘ | C | 1 2 ‚Čę q 4 , then for any őĽ ‚ąą ūĚĒĹ q ‚ąĖ { 0 } , the number of congruence classes of triangles with vertices in A √ó B √ó C and one side-length őĽ is at least ‚Čę q 2 . In higher dimensions, we obtain similar results for k -simplex but under a slightly stronger condition. Compared to the well-known L 2 method in the literature, our approach offers better results in both conditions and conclusions. When A = B = C , the second goal of this paper is to give a new and unified proof of the best current results on the distribution of simplex due to Bennett, Hart, Iosevich, Pakianathan and Rudnev (2017) and McDonald (2020). The third goal of this paper is to study a Furstenberg-type problem associated to a set of rigid motions. The main ingredients in our proofs are incidence bounds between points and rigid motions. While the incidence bounds for large sets are due to the author and Semin Yoo (2023), the bound for small sets will be proved by using a point‚Äďline incidence bound in ūĚĒĹ q 3 due to Koll√°r (2015).
