Abstract:First order algebraic differential equations are considered. A necessary condition for a first order algebraic differential equation to have a rational general solution is given: the algebraic genus of the equation should be zero. Combining with Fuchs’ conditions for algebraic differential equations without movable critical point, an algorithm is given for the computation of rational general solutions of these equations if they exist under the assumption that a rational parametrization is provided. It is based on an algorithmic reduction of first order algebraic differential equations with algebraic genus zero and without movable critical point to classical Riccati equations.

Abstract:We study the interatomic exchange interactions and Curie temperatures in half-metallic semi Heusler compounds NiCrZ (Z=P, Se, Te) and NiVAs. The study is performed within the framework of density functional theory. The calculation of exchange parameters is based on the frozen-magnon approach. It is shown that the exchange interactions in NiCrZ vary strongly depending on the Z constituent. The Curie temperature, Tc, is calculated within the mean field and random phase approximations. The difference between two estimations is related to the properties of the exchange interactions. The predicted Curie temperatures of all four systems are considerably higher than room temperature. The relation between the half-metallicity and the value of the Curie temperature is discussed. The combination of a high spin-polarization of charge carriers and a high Curie temperature makes these Heusler alloys interesting candidates for spintronics applications.

Abstract:A special class of autonomous algebraic differential equations is studied. No equations in the class have any entire transcendental solutions. In a sense, for almost all equations in the class, transcendental meromorphic solutions can also be excluded. With substantially fewer exceptional equations, transcendental solutions are either elliptic or of the form f(z) = g(exp(cz)) with g rational and c constant.

Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:Given a linear differential equation with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(x)$, an important question is to know whether its full space of solutions consists of algebraic functions, or at least if one of its specific solutions is algebraic. After presenting motivating examples coming from various branches of mathematics, we advertise in an elementary way a beautiful local-global arithmetic approach to these questions, initiated by Grothendieck in the late sixties. This approach has deep ramifications and leads to the still unsolved Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture.

Bi-algebraic geometry of strata of differentials in genus zero

Abstract:We study algebraic subvarieties of strata of differentials in genus zero satisfying algebraic relations among periods. The main results are Ax-Schanuel and André-Oort-type theorems in genus zero. As a consequence, one obtains several equivalent characterizations of bi-algebraic varieties. It follows that bi-algebraic varieties in genus zero are foliated by affine-linear varieties. Furthermore, bi-algebraic varieties with constant residues in strata with only simple poles are affine-linear. Additionally, we produce infinitely many new linear varieties in strata of genus zero, including infinitely many new examples of meromorphic Teichmüller curves.

Abstract:The term differential-algebraic equation was coined to comprise differential equations with constraints (differential equations on manifolds) and singular implicit differential equations. Such problems arise in a variety of applications, e.g. constrained mechanical systems, fluid dynamics, chemical reaction kinetics, simulation of electrical networks, and control engineering. From a more theoretical viewpoint, the study of differential-algebraic problems gives insight into the behaviour of numerical methods for stiff ordinary differential equations. These lecture notes provide a self-contained and comprehensive treatment of the numerical solution of differential-algebraic systems using Runge-Kutta methods, and also extrapolation methods. Readers are expected to have a background in the numerical treatment of ordinary differential equations. The subject is treated in its various aspects ranging from the theory through the analysis to implementation and applications.

Abstract:In this paper we provide new examples of geometrically trivial strongly minimal differential algebraic varieties living on nonisotrivial curves over differentially closed fields of characteristic zero. Our technique involves developing a theory of Kodaira-Spencer forms and building connections to deformation theory. In our development, we answer several open questions posed by Rosen and some natural questions about Manin kernels.

Abstract:We discuss for the first time canonical differential equations for hyperelliptic Feynman integrals. We study hyperelliptic Lauricella functions that include in particular the maximal cut of the two-loop non-planar double box, which is known to involve a hyperlliptic curve of genus two. We consider specifically three- and four-parameter Lauricella functions, each associated to a hyperelliptic curve of genus two, and construct their canonical differential equations. Whilst core steps of this construction rely on existing methods $\unicode{x2014}$ that we show to be applicable in the higher-genus case $\unicode{x2014}$ we use new ideas on the structure of the twisted cohomology intersection matrix associated to the integral family in canonical form to obtain a better understanding of the appearing new functions. We further observe the appearance of Siegel modular forms in the $\varepsilon$-factorized differential equation matrix, nicely generalizing similar observations from the elliptic case.

Abstract:A classification theorem for linear differential equations in two variables (one real and one Grassmann) having polynomial solutions(the generalized Bochner problem) is given. The main result is based on the consideration of the eigenvalue problem for a polynomial element of the universal enveloping algebra of the algebra $osp(2,2)$ in the "projectivized" representation (in differential operators of the first order) possessing an invariant subspace. A classification of 2 x 2 matrix differential equations in one real variable possessing polynomial solutions is described. Connection to the recently-discovered quasi-exactly-solvable problems is discussed.

Fuchs' theorem on linear differential equations in arbitrary characteristic

Abstract:The paper generalizes Lazarus Fuchs' theorem on the solutions of complex ordinary linear differential equations with regular singularities to the case of ground fields of arbitrary characteristic, giving a precise description of the shape of each solution. This completes partial investigations started by Taira Honda and Bernard Dwork. The main features are the introduction of a differential ring $\mathcal{R}$ in infinitely many variables mimicking the role of the (complex) iterated logarithms, and the proof that adding these "logarithms" already provides sufficiently many primitives so as to solve any differential equation with regular singularity in $\mathcal{R}$. A key step in the proof is the reduction of the involved differential operator to an Euler operator, its normal form, to solve Euler equations in $\mathcal{R}$ and to lift their (monomial) solutions to solutions of the original equation. The first (and already very striking) example of this outset is the exponential function $\exp_p$ in positive characteristic, solution of $y' = y$. We prove that it necessarily involves all variables and we construct its explicit (and quite mysterious) power series expansion. Additionally, relations of our results to the Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture and related conjectures will be discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we give a procedure for finding rational solutions of a given first-order ODE with functional and constant coefficients which occur in a rational way. We derive an associated system with the same solvability, and sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of rational solutions are given. In the case where all parametric coefficients are constant, we give an algorithm to compute the rational solutions. In the case where one functional coefficient appears, we algorithmically find rational general solutions which rationally depend on the appearing transcendental constant. In the other cases, the presented procedure is not completely algorithmic.

Abstract:Assuming that A(z)=B1(z)eP(z)+B2(z)eρp(z)+Q(z) , where B1(z),B2(z),p(z) are nonzero polynomials, ρ∈(0,1) , and Q(z) is an entire function of order less than deg⁡p , we study the oscillation of solutions of the linear differential equation f(k)+A(z)f=0 . Some conditions on A(z) are given to guarantee that any non-trivial solution f satisfies λ(f)=∞ or λ(f)≥σ(A) , where σ(f) and λ(f) denote respectively the order of f and the exponent of convergence of zeros of f . We also find some types of linear differential equations with zero-free solutions.
